5 out of 5 stars A good value.......2007-05-17

I wasn't expecting to have 4 discs for this price, and the music is a quality selection of film music, giving a good scope of the genre, and a very listenable transfer.

4 out of 5 stars The Sound Track Since Bernard Hermann.......2006-07-25

This collection is bound to capture your heart and evoke a tin ear on successive tracks. I found much to like and some duds - easy to skip over.
Very good value.

For the price, this CD is a great bargain. The musical selections, as you might expect, are mixed in quality ranging from extraordinary to so so, the balance being worthwhile and interesting. Sonically the CD is excellent.

5 out of 5 stars Hilarious!.......2007-03-14

This is one of my favorite Carlin's and I was lucky enough to see him live performing most of this material. I love the place for my stuff monologue "going up in the airplane looking down at all the little places full of stuff." The fussy eater always reminded me of things my mother said and along the way George interjects his hilarious "announcements."

Along with Class Clown and Toledo Window Box, this is one of the best early Carlin discs to get!

3 out of 5 stars Carlin in the early years.......2007-02-12

I am a big Carlin Fan, BUT Starting from the 90s on. The early years are not so my favourite thing.

5 out of 5 stars Hilarious experimentation.......2006-01-08

This album is unique to Carlin in that rather than nonstop stand-up recorded live, it is interspersed with commercials, interviews and game shows written and run by George, as if you're flipping through an all-Carlin TV set. It's somewhat reminiscent of his old radio/character comedy. The language is filthy, as usual, but the concepts are more lighthearted and inoffensive than his material on "You Are All Diseased" and "Complaints and Greivances". There's more observation and wordplay than satire on this one, and by this point in his career the wordplay is unrivaled.

Not quite as good as some of the other albums with straight, recorded-live-all-at-once formats, but I'm glad George is willing to experiment with all angles of humor.

5 out of 5 stars As George would say in years to come.......2005-08-06

this is the stuff he thinks about when "I'm home and the power goes out."

This is Carlin at his best: The stuff he came up with then (and now) was what hooked me on his comedy. He discusses topics that no other comedian would even think to talk about (such as, "You ever noticed you don't get laid at Thanksgiving?"). It's the off-the-wall, but things we think about all the time, stuff like that which keeps you coming back for more and asking, "What else is he going to come up with?"

Carlin always did come up with some right on observations: From religion to the Viet Nam and Gulf wars, to every social ill you can think of. Even if you don't agree with him, credit has to be given for his tackling such topics (as well as the off-the-wall stuff).

This CD is a great primer for Carlin's other works - before and after.

5 out of 5 stars True Comedic Genius.......2005-06-28

I was about 10 when I heard this album for the first time and it's still as funny today as it was the day I heard it. In fact, it's probably funnier because I get all of the subtler references I missed back in 1980.

As others have mentioned, the album is compiled from material taken from one of Carlin's live shows and interspersed with studio materials. And while others have also used this kind of a format (for example, Denis Leary's Lock-N-Load album), this is by far the penultimate example of a mix between live and studio comedy.

From the live material, the "Place for My Stuff", "Rice Krispies", and "Ice Box Man" are still laugh out loud funny. The studio material is also very funny and I have always thought that it was included to highlight the wittier side of Carlin's comedy -- the "Book Club" and "I'm a famous person and I'm for sale" bits make me laugh every time I hear them.

I don't think you can call yourself a Carlin fan and not own this album.

5 out of 5 stars Elvin Bishop-struttin' my stuff.......2004-02-10

I first heard a couple of cuts off of this CD when I was in Navy bootcamp in San Diego, CA I was just barely aware of Elvin at this time. I later saw him live at Orange County fair around 1980. His music reminds me of a nice country drive in an old pickup truck, with a fishin' pole and a six-pack in the cooler. I've always been a fan and will continue to be.

4 out of 5 stars Mickey Thomas before Starship.......2001-03-25

Before he took over as lead singer for Jefferson Starship, Mickey Thomas did the same for Elvin Bishop. "Fooled Around And Fell In Love" is a classic example of Mickey's incredible vocal ability. This recording brings back memories of the golden age of multi-track analog recording; 1974 to 1981.

4 out of 5 stars Pretty Good Tunes.......2000-09-28

I was 16 when I first heard this record. My friend taped me about 4 songs of his dad's original LP and we got in the car, he put it in. I was pretty much blown away. The Title song "Strutting My Stuff" Would have to be the album's best. Followed Closely by "I Love This Life I Lead". But Elvin Bishop seems more than just about funk music, he seems like the type of guy that would have burned out in the 70's if only anyone was paying attention. It is a shame this album didn't get enough attention because it is quite good. The most recognizable tune on the whole album is "Fooled Around and Fell in Love".

Having pulled often-stellar duty in both genres for many a year, film-scoring vet Alan Silvestri should know if the show-biz adage that drama is easy, it's comedy that's hard is true. For the Brad Pitt/Julia Roberts comic-romantic adventure The Mexican (the title refers to an antique pistol that must be smuggled back across the border), Silvestri taps a little of his recent history--and some sage genre insight--to conjure up a breezy, playful score that evokes everything from Leone's Dollars trilogy and traditional Mexican folk music to pastoral jazz flourishes and club kitsch. But a decidedly Morricone-meets-Bacharach sensibility prevails throughout, with the composer often lovingly tweaking the familiar banjo, harmonica, and choral clichés of the spaghetti Western into music that is refreshing even as it is strangely familiar. A handful of pop songs adds another layer of loopiness to the proceedings--especially the remix of Men Without Hats' chestnut from the early 1980s, "The Safety Dance," and the sprightly "El Cable" by Mexican exotica master Esquivel. --Jerry McCulley

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Ennio Morricone or Alain Silvestri.......2004-06-11

Alain Silvestri did a great job. He choose the songs' melodies sounds like the Spagetti Western Movies' great composer Ennio Morricone's unforgettable Spagetti Western movie themes. The Main Title and The Mexican songs are the great example ones. Also "Where is my staff" too. "Thieves" is another one of the greatest. And list goes on.. I love Ennio's songs that's why i love this soundtrack. If you love Ennio's stuffs too this soundtrack give you all you need.
Many of the soundtracks don't have every songs. So you have to find the other songs anywhere. For God's shake The Mexican is not an example oof this. This is not just a Soundtrack. IT'S a SCORE and a SOUNDTRACK. You can find the MOVIE SONGS and THE OTHER lyrical songs in this soundtrack. This is it's other plus too.

3 out of 5 stars A complement to the movie which does not stand alone so well.......2002-05-27

I thought the sound track to the movie was a great complement to it but after I bought it I felt that it did not stand up by itself very well. Its themes seemed too short and disjointed. But, I plan to play it on my CD player in random mode along with other CD's. Then I think it can complement the music it is interspersed with - depending on the music.

4 out of 5 stars soundtrack , the mexcian.......2001-04-22

the starting theme song, is the my all time favourite, watch the movie, and u'll know y.

4 out of 5 stars Great Soundtrack for a good movie.......2001-03-06

The Soundtrack for "The Mexican" is not necessarily one of the greatest soundtracks ever made, but it does capture the essence of the movie. The distinguishable guitar plucks and the internitten catchy songs are great. Overall...if you liked the movie, you should like the soundtrack.

5 out of 5 stars Hot Fun.......2001-03-06

Hot Fun is the best way to describe the soundtrack to The Mexican. It's fast paced, boisterous, and makes for great listening on any type of trip. Be prepared for drives to the grocery store to become a lot more exciting! The mix of vocal and instrumental selections add to the versatility of the disk and give it a unique flavor. Even if you haven't seen the movie, this CD would be a great addition to any CD collection!

    Ann Rabson
    Struttin' My Stuff
    M.C. Records MC0041

Many of us remember Ann Rabson (keyboards, vocals, acoustic guitar) from Saffire - The Uppity Blues Women. They performed several times at the old Front Street News in the early `90s. A recent émigré from Richmond at the time, I spent hours before Saffire shows and between sets conjecturing with fellow Virginian Ann Rabson about why things were so [expletive deleted] up here in Wilmington.

We remember her sense of humor and how she ate hecklers for breakfast, particularly the time a Wilmington musician in the audience claimed that a male musician playing no better than the women in Saffire would be booed off the bandstand. Ann looked at the heckler, asked over the microphone what the difference was between a man and a vibrator, then explained, "One is cold and mechanical and the other takes batteries."

Last year's Saffire show at UNC-Wilmington was like a packed house reunion of the downtown bar crowd from a decade earlier. In the time since Wilmington first met Ann Rabson, she's received four nominations for W.C. Handy Awards as Traditional Blues Female Artist of the Year. In 1998 her first solo album, Music Makin' Mama, was nominated as Album of the Year in both the Traditional Blues and Acoustic Blues categories. In 1992 her composition Elevator Man was nominated as Song of the Year. Ann has toured Belgium, Holland, Italy, Germany, Spain, Switzerland, Australia, New Zealand, and Brazil with Saffire, and Canada both with Saffire and with Jackson Delta. She has made two solo European tours; in 1998 she toured Europe with piano legend Erwin Helfer and played a week-long solo engagement at the Jazz Club of Hong Kong, and we can assume that she's made the same strong, warm impression worldwide that she made on Wilmington all those years ago.

"Struttin' My Stuff," the new solo album from our old friend, is smooth, authoritative and strong, and it's everything those who know and remember her could hope for. Material ranges from ancient blues piano standards like "Pigalle Love" and "Not as Sorry As I Used To Be" up through uptempo late `50s - early `60s R & B hits "Schooldays" and "Check Mr. Popeye" to original Rabson remarks ("Hassle Attack") and reminiscences ("Love Song[Ode to George]") penned specifically for this release. The sixteen songs on "Struttin' My Stuff" break down to seven solo piano and vocal numbers, three solo acoustic guitar and vocal tunes, and six cuts with a drums/bass rhythm section. As of this writing, my favorite's Check Mr. Popeye," but that's probably because reminders of New Orleans dance crazes from several decades ago are always welcome to me. I think that the cuts on this album will rotate as favorites as time passes.

5 out of 5 stars A flat out great album.......2002-09-11

Great repertoire, wonderful arrangements, and a woman who clearly sings happily and healthily from the brain, heart, and even some lower anatomical regions. You can't help but love her, and it's clear she loves what she does. This wonderful music will make you feel better if you're low, and make you feel EVEN better if you're not.

This recording is a sequel to pianist Carol Rosenberger's "Perchance to Dream," a compilation of lullabies and other restful, tranquil music. It's nice to have a follow-up on such a warm and professionally presented album, and this does not disappoint. On the first disc of this two-CD set there are a number of simple tunes including themes by Mozart, Schubert, and Beethoven; on the second disc we hear their variations. Once again Rosenberger's playing seems suited to the primary goal at hand: putting children to sleep. Her execution is without edges or unpleasant texture of any kind. While it would possibly come across as slightly bland in a concert hall, this approach is perfectly suited here. -- Gwendolyn Freed

The collections itself well deserve the title - lots of sweet, dreaming and classic melodies. However, the bad recording sound has taken away all the goodies created in the album.

Today's "wanna be" soul singers should sit, listen and learn from this CD. Bobby Womack's "Roots" are truly where we all came from and his musical return to them is a powerful inspiration! This soul music is probably too strong for today's pop culture, so you won't hear it on the airways. But, BUY IT, play it in the car, at home, wherever. You won't be disappointed!
