Haydn was not a pianist of any distinction, nor a very successful composer of instrumental concertos, but his piano sonatas--and there are more than 60 of them--are much finer than those of Mozart, who was one of his era's greatest keyboard virtuosos. The reason for this is simple. Mozart wrote his keyboard concertos for himself and his sonatas for students. Haydn, on the other hand, was constantly stimulated to write piano music for gifted amateurs, though in those days amateurs were often as good as the professionals, particularly women for whom a concert career was out of the question. This is great music then, charming but never trivial, and John McCabe plays it with impressive style and vigor. --David Hurwitz
Customer Reviews:
Nice Set...not a great performance.......2005-05-08
As a pianist myself, I was very interested to listen to Mr. McCabe when preparing my M.M. degree recital, in which I performed Haydn's Sonata in E minor, Hob:XVI/34 (I will refer to the sonata by the Landon number rather than the older Hoboken number).
Mr. McCabe certainly plays quite cleanly, as one would expect in this day and age. In addition, he provides extensive program notes (Mr. McCabe is a respected musicologist)
Unfortunately, Mr. McCabe isn't quite the performer one would expect to produce the entire output of Haydn's Sonatas. First of all, his tempos are usually not well suited to the music's style (whether in the Allegros or Adagios). Though this has somewhat to due with his lesser technical ability, it also has to do with his idea of interpretation, which to say the least, is quite boring. In the Sonata No. 34, the opening movement has a very particular character. Though it is one of Haydn's few sonatas in a minor key, the opening motive returns in many forms throughout the first movement. Mr. McCabe seems to miss the point of this, along with the importance of articulation (which is of utmost importance in the music of Haydn).
Mr. McCabe uses far too much pedal throughout (especially in the first movement). In the second movement, his imprecise pedaling detracts from the recitative quality (this movement being influenced from Haydn's knowledge of vocal writing and operatic traditions). The third movement is quite slow and the lively character is missing.
I don't believe that one can put Mr. McCabe's recordings on a level with great Haydn interpreters such as Ax or even Richter (with far more color and more adherence to the musical style). This is unfortunate as it comes from such a respected musicologist.
As a final note, it is nice to own this collection to have all Haydn's Sonatas and his output for piano at your fingertips, but I would recommend Ax (or Andsnes in the future...his Haydn Concertos are fantastic).
Much unknown music to assimilate.......2005-04-19
I can partially share one reviewer's opinion that much of this music seems repetitive and certainly that is somewhat the case, but I only listen to one disc at a sitting. It takes time to get to know these sonatas. The Mozart sonatas are more widely performed, and therefore known to the music listening public. At this point in my experience, I must admit that I prefer the Mozart sonatas, but I am gaining an appreciation for those of Haydn.
The quality of the recording is good with very little background noise or noticeable distortion. The piano seem OK for the type of music and if one reviewer thinks these are twangy, listen to these sonatas on an eighteenth century pianoforte.
Mr. McCabe is a competent player without any idiosyncracies which seems in keeping with these sonatas.
I received a boxed set that had two disc sixes and no disc three. Ah, German precision.
the greatest penny a note composer.......2005-04-02
I have listened to all 62 sonatas for keyboard and perhaps 3 of them rise to the level of wonderful composition. If you listen to them you hear he doesn't really "get started " until about sonata 32, compared with say Beethoven who except for 3 or 4 composed 32 of the greatest piano sonatas the world will ever hear. I have attempted to give Haydn a fair hearing for symphonic ( boring ) and keyboard works but for the most part he must get the award for not really being able to put 2 consecutive asthetic notes together. The Nelson Mass is very nice. And I know in his last years, Europe just adored him. He was earning upward in todays dollars of $85,000, which just galled Mozart. Finally the sonatas are performed and recorded well. Before purchasing these sonatas listen to the clips and see if you dont want to run screaming into the night, but if you are a boring person with absolutely no musical asthetic, these sonatas cant be beat!
The best complete set of Haydn Sonatas at any price.......2004-05-22
Other individual performances may "grab" you more than these, but as a whole I could not find fault with these performances. They are particularly satisfying if you follow with a score - you get to see the choices in ornamentation, dynamics, etc. that McCabe makes compared with what is on the printed page. I did several comparisons with other performers (I own 4 complete sets of these sonatas and several smaller compilations), and McCabe consistently comes out on top overall, in my opinion. Haydn's best sonatas are consistently more inventive, witty, and daring than Mozart's and are definitely worth your attention.
Excellent performances of rarely heard works.......2004-05-16
Rich & delicious entertainment. Delighted that one can enjoy this beautiful music of pieces which are rarely publicly performed.

Fine new recordings of three important Schuman pieces.......2003-04-14
This release contains three of William Schuman's important pieces from the 1940s: "Credendum," the Piano Concerto, and the Fourth Symphony. All have a toehold in the repertoire (and indeed I've heard all three of them in concert) but, with the exception of "Credendum," they have never had decent recordings. This release featuring the Albany Symphony Orchestra under David Alan Miller, and with the distinguished pianist and composer, John McCabe, fills that need.
"Credendum," (Latin for "That Which Must Be Believed," and subtitled "Article of Faith") exists in this orchestral version and also in a wind band version fashioned by the composer. It was commissioned by the State Department to honor UNESCO. It has three sections. The first, "Declaration," is a forthright and declamatory movement primarily for brass, winds and percussion. It feels like an oration about important things. The second section, "Chorale," is primarily for strings and is an urban nocturne. It is interrupted by the bustling "Finale," which eventually leads back to a restatement of the striking "Declaration" material. This piece has always struck me as the most rhetorical of Schuman's works and, given the circumstances of its commission, that is appropriate. There is still available a recording of "Credendum" by Eugene Ormandy conducting the Philadephia Orchestra; the current performance is its equal and is in superior sound.
I have a soft spot in my heart for the Piano Concerto (1943). I was attending a public rehearsal of the piece many years ago (Samuel Lipman was the pianist) and noticed a woman in the audience following a score. I asked if I could look on, and thus started one of my longest and closest friendships. The piece is brashly jazzy in spots, and features one of Schuman's most characteristic techniques, that of rhythmically interesting modern counterpoint. Schuman was certainly one of the most skilful of mid-century America's contrapuntists. The fugal sections of the finale are light-hearted and invigorating. Particularly effective is the middle movement, an achingly yearning night-piece, reminding one of the better-known "Lonely Town" that Leonard Bernstein wrote a year or so later for his ballet "On the Town."
The Fourth Symphony (1941) is similar to its more famous brother, the Third. It is in three movements. It begins with a mournful English horn solo accompanied by a solo bass viol; this sets the tone for the symphony as a whole. It is dark, passionate, often bitter in tone. (That tone was perhaps appropriate in that its première came only weeks after the attack on Pearl Harbor.) The last movement features an attractive fugue - Schuman seems to work fugal passages into most of his orchestral music - which is heard above the opening movement's striding bass line; eventually the two themes are set against each other in the bass voices before the symphony comes to a close in a blaze of victorious C major.
Schuman's music now strikes a somewhat nostalgic chord in that it celebrates the broad-shouldered, if occasionally bewildered, optimism of the industrial, urban USA at a time when that optimism was being tested by the Second World War. The big rhetorical gestures may now feel a little trite; the irony of our age doesn't allow for that kind of open-hearted determination, more's the pity. It is strong, attractive, skilfully made music that undoubtedly will last, even if it is somewhat out of fashion these days.
David Alan Miller obtains lively, lovely performances from the Albany Symphony Orchestra, a group that for decades has made a real reputation for itself by playing modern American music. John McCabe gives an alert and musical account of the piano concerto, certainly outdoing the old and inadequate recording with Gary Steigerwalt and the MIT Symphony. And the performance of the Fourth Symphony easily outshines the old and now-unobtainable recording by Robert Whitney and the Louisville Symphony.

Northern Period Counterpoint to "Sacred Harp".......2006-10-05
A beautiful collection of "low-church" hymns in a folk style, but from the North. Some similarities to Sacred Harp-style shape-note singing, mostly found in the South, but from New England and largely taken from mid-19th Century period sources. Extremely well-performed and haunting, these songs will be running through your head for weeks after your mega-church's latest electric guitar extravaganza fades away.
Nearly Lost Heritage.......2000-08-09
I am appreciative of any CD, such as this one, that brings the sounds of traditional hymns to modern ears. This CD includes familiar gospel with not so familiar hymns that whisper of a rich heritage nearly lost in the maze o modern choruses. Many of these modern songs lack the genuine passion found in the traditional songs found on this CD. I recommend this CD to those who are interested in cultural history as well as in beautiful hymn texts.

the ingredients.......2006-12-23
This is a perfect King's Singers recording filled with Christmas music. The sustained success of this group of six English gentlemen is legendary, but not surprising. The ingredients for that success have remained the same for many years, through varying personnel, and across a very wide-ranging repertory of a capella music. First and foremost, these men are true musicians - musicians first, singers and interpreters second. Musicianship consisting of equal parts learning and attentive transmission, the King's Singers are immaculate musicians - attuned, commited, ready, and fortunately blessed with musical intelligence to guide their choices of material. Second, and as important in my view, these men are comrades. In their recently released DVD, one finds abundant evidence of a committment not only to their art, but to each other. A capella singing by nature revealing, you'll find no seams in the singing of this mastergroup. Everything is seen to, raised up, compelling - and ever beautiful. This is authentic art of the gods. As fond as I am of Chanticleer, and of Harry Christopher's The Sixteen, the work of those fine ensembles pales when compared to the lingering beauty of the King's Singers. Constant invention is one of the hallmarks of their recorded legacy, and is bountiful on this disc - voicings, approaches, and a magical communion of voices. Check out Ariel Ramirez' instantly amenable 'La peregrinacion' and you'll never turn back. Big recommendation.

a first-rate but little known 20th century composer.......2000-08-03
how can you resist the cover art of geese and fish in boxes?
rawsthorne's warm, complex music is a joy! after getting hooked on his chamber music (also a naxos issue), this was a good logical progression.
it's gentle and romantic in places, but sometimes discordant and angry- but always in complete control. also i had no idea the recorder could be such an expressive instrument- very interesting. this CD is an excellent example of mid 20th century classical music.
spend the $ and get all three naxos issues of rawsthorne's music. the playing is intelligent and sympathetic, the liner notes very helpful, and the naxos engineers have done a good job of capturing little details.

Album Description
LEGENDARY PERFORMANCES ON CD FOR THE FIRST TIME! Ernest John Moeran (1894-1950), still the least-known significant English composer of his generation, composed his violin concerto in 1942. It was first performed by Arthur Catterall and conducted by Sir Henry Wood at a Promenade Concert on July 8, 1942. The positive individuality of Moeran's music, which grew in strength as he became older, proves him to be a composer with something to say, and an unwavering judgment about the way in which it must be said. Moeran's art is above all a lyrically nostalgic one--something in his Celtic ancestry determined this, perhaps, for he was half Irish.

Customer Reviews:
A Classic Recording of Hindemith's Amazing 'Ludus Tonalis'.......2006-06-02
I'm a little surprised that there has been no review thus far of this classic recording by British composer/pianist John McCabe of Paul Hindemith's piano masterpiece 'Ludus Tonalis' (1942). There have been other recordings of the work -- e.g, Sviatoslav Richter gave us a titanic account recorded live in rural France (complete with birdsong) albeit in inferior sound -- but this is the best I've heard. I didn't much like that by Olli Mustonen who gave it a rather more romantic sound than I would have preferred. And I have not heard the recording by Joyce Hatto, the British pianist in her late 70s who, on her private label, has recorded enormous amounts of piano literature but who only recently burst upon the scene after having withdrawn from the public eye a couple of decades ago. I intend to rectify that omission as I've been impressed with what I've heard so far from Ms Hatto. Nonetheless, I was very impressed when this recording came out in the mid-1990s and remain so. McCabe, perhaps because he is also an accomplished composer, is an analytical player and to my mind that is precisely what is needed in this hour-long collection of fugues and interludes which Hindemith subtitles 'Studies in Counterpoint, Tonal Organization and Piano Playing.' The work certainly does emphasize those three musical qualities. It consists of twelve fugues arranged in keys (or rather tonal centers) whose succession derives from the natural overtone series. They are linked to each other by interludes that modulate from the key of the previous fugue to the key of the succeeding one. All this sounds very dry but in fact it isn't. There is great variation of mood, tempo and form in these pieces. It's not for nothing that Hindemith titled the work 'Ludus Tonalis' ('Musical Game'): there is wit, drama and clever ingenuity here.
On first hearing non-Hindemithians -- that is, listeners who are not familiar with Hindemith's musical language -- might be a bit puzzled or even bored by 'Ludus' but on repeated listening the oyster opens up to reveal a pearl of great beauty. McCabe reveals it without pandering or overemoting.
The CD is rounded out by the inclusion of Hindemith's very early 'Suite 1922,' whose sections are called 'March,' 'Shimmy,' 'Nachtstück,' 'Boston,' and 'Ragtime.' The excellent notes by Robert Matthew-Walker make the point that the older Hindemith was a little embarrassed by these trifles, but at the distance of eighty years they can be valued for what they are: a master's idiosyncratic and ingenious take on popular music of the time.
As usual, Hyperion's presentation is excellent, with a delightful cover (painted by Hindemith himself), marvelous notes, beautiful sound and, helpfully, caputs (the first few notes, in musical score) for the prelude and postlude of the 'Ludus' as well as each of the fugues and interludes. (As I typed that last word I just GOT the point of Hindemith's surely intentional pun -- interLUDES: 'between the games.')
Definitely recommended.
