Following the bland, smothering urban-cowboy era of the early 1980s, Randy Travis's loose, flexible vocal phrasing and stripped-down, traditional accompaniment was the breath of fresh air. Along with Dwight Yoakam and George Strait, Travis epitomized the new traditionalism that dominated the remainder of the decade. While his Haggard and Frizzell influences were obvious, his relaxed delivery and flair for understatement set him apart. Bob Seger has racked up a lot of worthy tracks over the years, but it took until 1994 for a greatest hits package to appear. Voilà. The bad news: We're missing an awful lot of songs here. Night Moves is Seger's crit-pick album, and a great place to start if you don't have any Seger at all. Next in the rankings is Stranger in Town. Otherwise, his highs are pretty scattered, which would make any best-of package a worthy investment. But if you want to get comprehensive, "Rock & Roll Never Forgets," "Fire Down Below," "Horizontal Bop," "Her Strut," "Betty Lou's Getting Out Tonight," and "Katmandu" aren't on this CD--and you'll have to go to the original albums to secure them. --Gavin McNett

This is an excellent compilation of CCR's tunes from the late 60s, early 70s. There's a reason why Credence tunes kept popping up in movies and commercials. It's great music and evocative of the era from which it comes. No need for me to review the individual tunes; anybody with a radio has head most of them. A must-have for any music fan.

This is how you do a greatest hits collection. You put ALL of them on there. Not a mix of half greats, and half "other", then release the rest on another "greatest hits" CD.

Get the Infinity album too........2007-07-07

Unfortunately, it does not include my favorite song tandem Feeling That Way/ Anytime. For that you need to buy The Infinity album. It does include some great songs, a good mix of rockers and ballads. Definitely worth the price to anyone who loves classic rock and roll or was a teen in the late '70s. But do yourself a favor and get the Infinity album too.

I'm going to rate this CD based on a $1 per song cost to total cost for the entire CD (Apple and Rhapsody charge $1 per song).
I can still remember the days when, if you were a guy, you didn't admit to your friends that you liked Journey. I guess because they wrote a lot of soft rock or 'pop' love songs and had a really big lady following back then. Journey was so damn popular that they had their own video arcade game. It was much better than Kiss' pinball machine. Is Steve Perry ever going to do a reunion with the band?
This CD is great. I'm not afraid anymore to admit that I like Journey. The CD on Amazon is priced at $10. There are $14 worth of excellent songs on here (Tracks 1 through 14). So this CD is worth the price. You can also load the entire album on iTunes for $10, if you don't want to wait for the CD in the mail (and save yourself the shipping costs).

The Mamas and the Papas had a sound that helped define a portion of the 1960s. Their breezy folk classics had a bit of San Francisco psychedelia woven in, and, despite the sweet harmonies, there was also a noticeably dark feel to some of their more popular work. "California Dreamin'" and "Monday, Monday" both utilized enough minors to give them a spooky edge. Greatest Hits is an essential part of any audiophile's collection, especially if they don't have the original recordings that spawned the hits. "Dedicated to the One I Love" is almost ironic for its tenderness, considering the turmoil that rumbled through the band's interrelationships. While John and Michelle Phillips and Denny Doherty were all responsible for the success of the Mamas and the Papas, listening to this collection reveals that the late great Mama Cass was not only the heart but the soul of the band. The Mamas & The Papas - who doesn't love their music? This CD is ESSENTIAL. 20 of their best loved hits and album tracks. What harmonies, singing, songwriting & production on these songs. The voices of Cass, Denny, John & Michelle eternally in unison on these amazing songs.

I love the biggest hits, as well as the album tracks & minor hits, like Denny's lead on DANCING BEAR, NO SALT ON HER TAIL, which should have been a single, and SAFE IN MY GARDEN - one of their last singles in 1968. And of course, their anthems CALIFORNIA DREAMIN', MONDAY MONDAY, GO WHERE YOU WANNA GO, and many more. LOOK THROUGH MY WINDOW is just majestic with Denny's lead, Cass & Michelle's backing vocals & the swirling strings. John Phillips wrote it, and it's one of their masterpieces, like MONDAY MONDAY is.

Harmonies and GREAT tunes make this a no-brainer........2007-04-20

The origin of the Mamas & the Papas is an interesting one, and for the most part us fans pretty much care mostly about what made them great: the music. When all is said and done, John Phillips has been regarded as a lot less of a talented songwriter than he truly was. When you can wake up in the middle of the night and force Michelle Phillips to write down the lyrics to a song that's been bouncing around your head for a few hours and it turns out to be "California Dreamin" you can consider yourself an accomplished songwriter (IMHO). That is easily the best song written basically while asleep since "Yesterday" by Paul McCartney.

While "California Dreamin" wasn't their all-time biggest chart topper, it is most assuredly the song that us fans think of most often when we read or hear about this amazingly talented Quartet. Drugs, alcohol and who knows what else very much contributed to a great deal of the problems and in some respects their eventual break-up, but NOBODY can seriously take away the impact that they have had over the years.

Personally I feel that Denny Doherty was one of the most underrated singers of the 60's. His talent on their signature song is unmistakable, and since his passing recently, will be sorely missed. As it stands, we now only have Michelle left of the original four members. All I can say is for the casual fans of the band, this is a great collection to have, and you will be amazed at the selection of songs that you probably haven't heard before that are assembled here. For the true Mamas & the Papas fans, it'll take you on an incredible trip down memory lane the way only great music can. I find that through specific songs I can remember obscure moments of my life that otherwise I honestly would have totally forgotten otherwise. Its an amazing medium and one I am fortunate to work in regularly.

While I didn't hit my teen years in the 60's, I was fortunate to have worked at an Oldies themed radio station for several years which helped me to really learn to love this music in a way I probably never would have in any other way. Give this CD a shot and get ready for hours--if not years of pure enjoyment.

This is the first attempt to consolidate all of Sir Elton's hit singles, from three labels, in one collection. It once would've required at least four CDs to own the best stuff here. Many think the legendary performer was at his best in the early to mid-'70s, and the incredible string of singles that ran from 1970's "Your Song" through 1977's "Sorry Seems to Be the Hardest Word" remains mighty impressive. But in retrospect, as they're presented here, '80s hits like "I'm Still Standing" and "Sad Songs" add much to an already amazing legacy. Three Disney tunes, the lush "The One," and two from Songs from the West Coast, which was hailed as a return to those '70s golden days, represent the later years. Collectively, these tracks reinforce the notion that, despite Michael Jackson's later proclamations, John was once the closest thing post-'60s music had to a genuine king of pop, respected by hipsters and the mainstream alike. --Bill Holdship

Elton John is good. This CD is even better. I was disappointed to learn that he didn't write a lick of his own lyrics (Bernie Taupin did). Elton John just wrote the music. And I guess we need to hear great music before we'll listen to the lyrics of a song.
Amazon is currently selling the CD for $15. The good news is that there is $20 worth of great music on it. This CD is worth ever dollar and them some. The essential Elton John songs are: Disc 1 - Tracks 1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9,11,12,13,14,15 & 16 (and I guess Candle In The Wind). Disc 2 - Tracks 1,3,4,5 & 6.

I got this as a birthday present and it's fab! It has all the songs that Elton is well known for and a few you maybe have forgotten about. It's easy listening and great for singing along to. Big thumbs up from me!

I've got lots of old Elton on vinyl (yes, I'm old) and was delighted to find 37 Elton tunes on CD for such a great price. This is a wonderful collection with some newer songs I didn't have. And I can play them in the car! (vinyl is not so good for that).

NOT THE GREATEST HITS!.......2007-03-27

Greatest Hits collections have almost always disappointed me because they invariably leave out a number of songs which were major hits of the artiste concerned. This Elton John collection is no different as four of his top ten hits are excluded. They are "Lucy In the Sky With Diamonds" (no.1 on the Hot 100), "Mama Can't Buy You Love" (no.9), "Little Jeannie" (no.3) and "I Don't Wanna Go On With You Like That" (no.2). Although this album is superior to previous collections I'm afraid I can only give it a 4 star rating because when it's title says "Elton John Greatest Hits" I expect every one of his BIGGEST hits to be included!

Anyone looking for the key to Abba's enduring appeal should look no further than "Voulez Vous" and "Gimme! Gimme! Gimme! (A Man After Midnight)" for their answer. There was an innocence to the Swedish quartet, even when they were singing about one-night stands and the invitations to them. Gold establishes that the band, while appreciated as campy, were actually multifaceted in their execution. "S.O.S." has a raw urgency in its chorus, and "Does Your Mother Know" draws its energy from classic '50s rock & roll. Likewise, you don't have to be Priscilla to swoon over "Mamma Mia" or "Dancing Queen." And when it comes to drama, those soaring vocals on "The Winner Takes It All" turn the song into a bitter anthem of every relationship that has ever fallen apart. Nothing in this life has brought me more joy that ABBA. From the first time I heard Waterloo, until the fanatic state began with Fernando, they have had my heart like no other group. GOLD is the best essence of ABBA. It has the best of the best sans Summer Night City, which is on the subsequent More Gold. Their only pop rivals in sales were The Bee Gees and the enormously huge pop/disco group Boney M. Relative unknowns in the US. Check them out. Not so much Abba sounding, but if you like good melodies and irresistable hooks, great purchase. Another big, but short-lived pop group was Clout. Much more like Abba. Highly recommended.

Abba's Greatest Hits lives up to its title. This is an excellent comp album. All of the hits are here [I am just old enough to remember Abba's heyday]. This is a very good, very well-rounded collection of Abba's recordings. There's not a lame song on here. The album can be listened to straight through without ever being tempted to hit the skip button. Simply some of the best pop music ever, not just from the 70s. Abba was a bright spot of the 70s, countering a bad presidency and wicked gas prices. Hmmmm, we have those back again, come to think of it. Where's our Abba?

Abba was a pretty prolific and popular group in the 70s. For those of us familiar with ABBA, this album is great. Those who aren't might want to give this a try. You've probably heard some of their tunes before without even realizing it was ABBA. Note that there is another greatest hits collection called the Definitive Collection. It's a 2 disc set that contains everything on this album, some lesser hits and a remix or two as well. For the die hard fan you might want to check into the Definitive Collection (or the Complete Studio Collection for you ABBA freaks out there). For the passing fan like myself, all of the great stuff is here.

This compilation contains all of the biggest hits by ABBA. It starts off with a great 1-2 punch of "Dancing Queen" and "Knowing Me, Knowing You". The hits just keep on coming, "Waterloo", "Gimmie a Man After Midnight", "Voules Vouz", "Fernando", "SOS", "I Had a Dream". There are a couple songs I wish were on here like "People Need Love", "If It Wasn't for the Night" and Frida's solo hit "I Know There's Something Going On".

On the cover of Foreigner's newest collection, the letters that spell out Complete Greatest Hits are cut out from world currency. For example, there's an A from Antarctica, a T from Trinidad, an M from Mongolia, and so on. At least the drive behind this third greatest-hits compilation (fourth, if you count The Best of Foreigner Live) is clearly admitted. Still, if anyone deserves your money, an argument can be made for guitarist Mick Jones and singer Lou Gramm. They've been through it all, and along the way, they've written a slew of songs you know well enough to perform at karaoke (but never as well, admittedly--Lou has a hell of a voice). Whether you liked them when they rocked ("Cold as Ice," "Hot Blooded," "Juke Box Hero") or preferred the power ballads they were credited with inventing ("Waiting for a Girl Like You," "I Want to Know What Love Is"), this album makes it feel like the very first time again. --Laura Etling

Kind of Cheesy.......2007-07-04

I was just a so-so fan but thought that buying the collection might make me into an avid fan. Not so. The tunes are original and kind of catchy, but frankly the production quality is low. My 10 year old said, "What's wrong with the music?" because it just doesn't have the quality of current recordings. So I would stay away unless you are already a really big fan.

Great compilation of Foreigner's stuff and just a great album to listen to. 1 1/4 hours of good rock. Even though it's pretty long, the listener has no trouble just putting it in the player and letting it go. No boring fill anywhere at all.

This CD takes you back to the days of riding around in a car full of friends, circling the same old parking lots over and over looking for hot guys / gals and even hotter parties. Gotta love those early 80's...we were all HOT BLOODED!

In a sense, The Warmth of the Sun is to 2004's double-platinum Sounds of Summer as 1975's Spirit of America was to the previous year's chart-topping Endless Summer. Both Summer compilations feature the obvious hits, and their followups collect less famous--though still worthy--tracks like "Hawaii," "409," and "Little Honda." But the 21st-century collections are sequenced by the Beach Boys themselves, and that means this volume's songs are second-tier in fame only. The casual fan whose curiosity was piqued by Sounds of Summer and picks this up for "All Summer Long" will be captivated by Brian Wilson's stops on the road to Pet Sounds ("Kiss Me Baby," "Please Let Me Wonder," "Let Him Run Wild," "The Little Girl I Once Knew"), moved by the father-son collaboration "Break Away" (in many ways the Beach Boys' farewell to the '60s), and floored by a string of five songs from the early '70s--a few of which had their genesis in the ill-fated Smile project--that are a perfect showcase for the maturity the group, especially Brian and Carl, managed to attain less than a decade after penning "Pom Pom Play Girl" ("Surf's Up," "Feel Flows," "All This Is That," "'Til I Die," "Sail On, Sailor"). Lingering Summer Leftovers.......2007-06-30

The amazing thing about The Beach Boys' new collection `The Warmth of the Sun' is that they have any additional material to offer after the incredible `Sounds of Summer'. Generous like before, the twenty-eight songs, nevertheless, are a mixed bag. But if you've paid your dues like me, anyone can mix and match these two collections without having to wait for the perfect collection. Cynically, if they had taken out about five songs from `Sounds of Summer' and put in the best of `The Warmth of the Sun,' few would argue the best Beach Boys' collection could have been conceived without our own editing tools. Marketing wouldn't have it that way. Besides `The Warmth of the Sun' has plenty of accommodations in its own right.

How could we forget such essential numbers as the finale title track, "All Summer Long," the multi-layered "Catch a Wave," or the essential and primitive "409"? The rest of the nuggets are real or fool's gold, but the lesser material serves its own purpose. In the middle are pleasant numbers from "Kiss Me Baby" through most of the material up to "Cool, Cool Water". Pleasant, but often forgettable, many of these songs serve up a mellow Beach Boys' outing. Meant for the sand or the living room, these songs serve as snooze control during the siesta portions of summer. (In their defense, even the lesser numbers have excellent multi-layered harmonizing that can't be beat.) Not exactly a direct parallel, but the two collections almost split fast and slow like the Beatles' collections, `Rock and Roll Music' and `Love Songs'.

There are hidden gems along the way to be sure. The terrific little "Hawaii" and the catchy gem "Little Honda" continue the greatness from the beginning. We're kept alive and awake up to and concluding with the playful "It's okay." Much later "Break Away" and the obscure, but excellent "Sail on Sailor" shake us out of the summer nap that's been laid before us. Furthermore, "California Saga" is a nice rhythmic variation of "California Girls," and "Don't Go Near the Water" is a quirky, but impressive multi-layered appeal for environmental integrity. Their remakes are better than average, too. Brian Wilson being influenced by the girl groups The Shirelles and the Crystals, produces good alternative versions of "Then I Kissed Her" and "Why Do Fools Fall in Love". Near the end we are treated to a luxuriously produced tribute to fellow icons The Mamas and the Papas with their own "California Dreamin'".

`The Warmth of the Sun' is properly titled. Whether better suited for the I-Pod or MP3 player while lying on the sand is the luxury of choice. Just be aware that the C.D. can be dangerous if you're inordinately tired and stuck in traffic.

If you are a Beach Boys fan, this is worth listening to. I knew all the songs already, but it's great to hear them again in this format. Most of the songs were album cuts, so many people may not be familiar with them.

Nice compilation of the real "great" AMERICA Hits.......2007-06-06

America and the 1970s, is an association you cannot avoid...
This excellent compilation made by the wizards of RHINO Records, includes almost all of their greatest hits. The sound quality is really good.
An ideal choice if you love to go listening good music while driving your car, guessing that anytime you should be driving all along the Ventura Highway, following the track of a Horse with No Name... Trying to reach your Sister Golden Hair, named Daisy Jane!... This CD will do Magic in your ears!

A great collection of those old songs.......2007-05-14

Most of America's greatest hits like "Horse with no Name" came out before I was born or when I was very small. I have always loved many of their songs because they were played on the radio, but never really knew who sang them. When I bought this album I was pleasantly surprised that most of the great old songs that I loved were done by America! They bring back memories of being driven around in a 1970's LeMans by my mom while wearing bell bottoms and pigtails. "Sandman" is my favorite, it totally rocks. There are a few songs on here that I don't care for, probably done later in their career, but overall this album is enjoyable from start to end.

This compilation has all of America's hits and is a wonderful listen. "Horse With No Name", "Sandman", "Ventura Highway", "Sister Golden Hair", "Tin Man", "Lonely People", "You Can Do Magic", "The Border". This is good soft rock from the seventies.

It had been such a long time since I last heard anything by "America" that I was eager to listen to this CD. I was very pleased & have not been disapointed. Who can forget "A Horse with No Name" & "Ventura Highway". Brings back the memories when all I had to listed to was the radio with their limited selection, I eagerly waited for just a little bit of "America". The Complete Greatest Hits is a fine addition to anyones collection of great classic rock tunes. Check it out.

Picture hot sun, coconut oil, friends, and rum and pepsi. That's where the album takes me, even as I labor in the "real world". No other music whisks us back in time as the harmonic melodies of these three guys.

If time is the true test, then Guns N' Roses' Greatest Hits confirms that they really were one of the greatest rock & roll bands in the world. While, in retrospect, fellow graduates of the class of 1987 are about as cool as poodle perms and spandex, the L.A. bad boys still rock like gods. Listening to the sun-drenched chords of "Paradise City" and the ensuing stadium-sized swagger is enough to make wearing leather trousers and bandanas seem like a good idea. Of course, it helped that for them sex, drugs, and rock & roll was a way of life, not a fashion statement. As Axl Rose wails "I wanna watch you bleed" on "Welcome to the Jungle" like a chain-smoking lunatic possessed, it's hard not to believe he meant it. Yet equally, it was his surprisingly poetic nature that made genuinely touching love songs of "Patience" and "Sweet Child of Mine."

Though none of their subsequent albums matched the drug-crazed genius of Appetite for Destruction, they did, as the Greatest Hits reminds, have their moments. From the bloated Use Your Illusion I & II came ultimate rock ballads "Don't Cry" and "November Rain," along with the primal rage that was "You Could Be Mine." And while the covers of the The Spaghetti Incident? were largely forgettable, the fact that their final single was a seedy sneer through the Rolling Stones' "Sympathy for the Devil" seems spectacularly fitting. --Dan Gennoe

Okay, but please read!.......2007-06-17

I love GNR. They remain one of my favorite bands. They put so much feeling into their music and lyrics (even those that are about drugs and sex). This was the first GNR CD I bought, and at the time I was in love with them. Years later I was pushed by a friend to buy Appetite for Destruction. I said to him, "I already have their greatest hits." But he replies, "No you don't. Not really." So eventually I bought AFD, and I was blown away. It is one of the greatest albums ever written. It's absolutly astounding. I am shocked to see that this greatest hits collection only had three songs from AFD. I no longer listen to this collection. Songs like Nightrain, Mr. Brownstone, My Michelle, and Rocket Queen weren't included. They certainly are better than some of the Medicore songs on here like Yesterday, Since I don't have you, and Such Fun. How were they hits, they were cover songs that did little to elevate the bands success. Where's It's So Easy, Coma, Estranged, and Garden of Eden. (even their underrated songs just mentioned are better than some songs on this track). If you want GNR's best, buy Appetite for Destruction and Use your Illusion I & II. If you want one CD then just get AFD.

Guns And Roses - A Decent Compliation.......2007-05-01

Talk about a band that had it all and pretty much threw it all away. Guns And Roses is the classic example of a band that came from nothing, hit the big time quickly, and then flushed it down the drain in a sea of drugs, alcohol, greed and general vice. The fact that they treated their fans like [...] did not help matters either. Showing up hours late at concerts or not showing up at all. Having hissy fits in the middle of shows and walking off the stage. It is really amazing to me these guys have maintained the audience that they have given the way their fans have been treated. This is a band that could have been the biggest hard rock band in the world, but basically blew it. Still, there is no denying that they produced some great rock n roll. The band really only put out 4 studio albums, so most people who are big fans of the band probably already have most of what is on this disc. As a compilation it is a decent collection. Naturally there is a lot of material from "Appetite For Destruction". The two "Use Your Illusion" albums are both well represented as well. My all time favorite G & R tune is probably "November Rain" which is here in all it's symphonic glory. Several covers are also here including Bob Dylan's "Knocking On Heaven's Door", Paul McCartney's "Live And Let Die", and The Rolling Stones "Sympathy For The Devil". All in all this is a decent collection if you just want to get the band's best known songs.

A good best of.......2007-04-28

Some may say GNRs music is dated.Maybe true.Make no mistake in the late 80s early 90s GNR were one of the most fresh,hardhitting,and well known metal bands on the globe.Exploding onto the seen amongst the glossy hair metal genre(which they helped end)GNR were ruff,raw,they drunk,smoked and delivered lightening guitar riffs and screaming vocals.Metal had seen such rawness before(Iron Maiden,Judus Priest)but it had many years and never so burtal.Put simply most of their best work appears on this album.Its not perfect, no best ofs are(reason for 4 star rating)but I think most GNR fans would agree with the song selections here.Most best ofs are cheap and miss the musical point.This captures one of the finest metal bands of all time well and is a satisfying listen and a highly recommended buy.YOZA
