As musical activists in the 1960s civil rights movement, the Staple Singers were powerful voices for equality and change. And more than 40 years after Pops's daughter Mavis spent a night in a West Memphis, Arkansas, jail at the behest of a racist cop, she still remembers the terror of the experience, as well as the counsel of Dr. Martin Luther King. That episode is at the centerpiece of "My Own Eyes," one of the most moving offerings on this collection of songs of racial struggle in the '50s and '60s, produced by guitarist Ry Cooder and featuring backing from the original Freedom Singers and Ladysmith Black Mambazo. Throughout, the album proves both emotionally chilling and spiritually uplifting. On J.B. Lenoir's "Down in Mississippi" and Marshall Jones's "In the Mississippi River," for example, Cooder makes fine use of pounding percussion and snaky electric guitar to capture the danger and fear inherent in the Deep South at the time, while the title song and "Jesus Is on the Main Line" draw on gospel and the traditional framework of church hymns to promise positive solutions. Staples, who adlibs on several cuts, connecting the injustice of yesterday to the continuing marginalization of blacks in the wake of Hurricane Katrina, remains a remarkable performer, employing a throaty sensuality that rises from a deep well of tremulous emotion. If her album is musically uneven at times, her artistry and strength continue to shine as undimmed beacons. --Alanna Nash

The Staple Singers: Greatest Hits

Album Description

From the liner notes, by John Lewis:

When I listen to this music, it takes me back. It takes me back to the red clay hills of Georgia, to the Black Belt of Alabama, and the Delta of Mississippi. It takes me back to the moans and groans and pains of an oppressed people yearning for freedom. It takes me back to the time when hundreds and thousands of us decided we were "sick and tired of being sick and tired," as Fannie Lou Hamer said. It takes me back to the days when ordinary people inspired by a dream decided to quench our hunger and thirst for justice in the fountains of mercy and love.

Back then, some people thought legalized segregation in America would never come to an end. But those of us in the Civil Rights Movement were inspired by a higher calling. And even if it cost us our very lives, "we weren't gone to let nobody turn us `round". We believed that the action of peace, the way of non-violence, and the power of love could overcome our oppression and remind our oppressors of their own humanity. Through the power of this faith our nation witnessed a non-violent revolution of values, a revolution of ideas that changed America forever.

The music you are listening to right now was the soul of that revolution. It was this music that gave us hope when it seemed like all hope was gone. It was the heartbeat of this music and its steady, reassuring message that bound us together as one solid force. So when we were beaten, arrested and jailed; when we stood together on picket lines or marched through the streets of the Deep South; when we faced the guns drawn, the billy clubs and the bullwhips raised; when we were teargassed, trampled by horses, or scattered by fire hoses, it was these songs that lifted us and pushed us to a higher place.

It is my hope that when you hear Mavis Staples, when you hear the Freedom Singers, and the other artists on this CD, that you too will be inspired. I hope this music will help you find the courage to stand up, speak up, and speak out and answer the call of your own conscience. It is my hope that this music will help you see what ordinary people with extraordinary vision can do when they decide they will never turn back.

Rep. John Lewis

4 out of 5 stars We'll never turn back.......2007-07-05

I enjoyed this cd very much. I had listened to the Staples singers years ago and was glad to see Mavis recording again.

5 out of 5 stars Mavis Staples rules.......2007-06-28

This is one fantastic recording. Mavis has a magnificent voice . . . perfect for the songs and full of depth and determination. The musicians notably ry cooder and back up singers are up to the task as well. Mavis let her light shine brightly!!

3 out of 5 stars quafable but not transcendent.......2007-06-27

This is a solid album, similar in tone to the recent retreads by the Blind Boys of Alabama and John Hammond. The historical and emotional baggage it carries help one to listen with a sympathetic ear, and perhaps lend it more pathos than is earned strictly on aesthetic merits.

3 out of 5 stars Yes and no.......2007-06-27

A tribute to the legacy of the Civil Rights movement and the Staple Singers themselves. Doesn't really live up to the hype, though. Mavis has still got the drive and passion, but her voice doesn't have the range and nuance.

5 out of 5 stars Passion and soul.......2007-06-26

Mavis Staples sings with passion and true soul the songs of the Civil Rights movement on "We'll Never Turn Back". The CD has all the sounds of a great Ry Cooder CD too because he did arrangements of many of the songs and he plays on them too. This CD's version of "This Little Light of Mine" shows what can be done respectfully to bring a whole new sound to an old song. This CD really deserves 5 stars.

5 out of 5 stars A real treasure.......2007-05-16

This album really hooked me on the awesome talent of Sam Cooke! I had listened over the years to Sam's many hits on the radio. I tried this album to catch some of my favorites. Wow, what a revelation! it is now one of my top three favorite CDs. I can't recommend it more.

5 out of 5 stars After all these years, still the best. . . .......2007-05-13

Even though Sam Cooke has been gone for so many years, time has not diminished the quality and genius of his music. The songs still have
the same meaning as they did back in the day. The world lost him much too soon, but his music lingers on and entertains many of the younger generations. This CD is the best of the best!!

5 out of 5 stars FABULOUS compilation.......2007-05-08

I am completely in love with this man and his voice, second only to Otis Redding. If I could listen to nothing else, that would be just fine with me. I was surprised to hear some songs I had either forgotten about or never heard before. Chock-full of goody after goody. I can't get enough.

5 out of 5 stars Portrait of a Legend 1951-1964.......2007-05-06

This CD includes all of Sam Cooke's hits as a solo artist after leaving The Soul Stirrers. I love this CD.

5 out of 5 stars A legend's best.......2007-03-30

If you are a Sam Cooke fan, this is a must have. I personally enjoy singing along to every cut on the CD.

Amazon.com essential recording

One of the must-own soul albums, Greatest Hits is fattened with five extra tracks in this reissue. Al Green brought the Memphis Sound into the '70s by slightly softening it, melding smooth funkiness with his miraculous voice and innate sensitivity: his love songs, while perfect for the bedroom, are as conversational as they are blatantly seductive. By adding the likes of "Belle," a 1977 single that's a near-goodbye to the pop life, to the original lineup of "Let's Stay Together," "Look What You Done for Me," "Call Me," and the others, this edition of Greatest Hits also intriguingly fills out the story. --Rickey Wright

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars it's been stated by so many others..........2007-07-01

No one, but no one, is better than Al Green when it comes to heart-wrenching, gut-churning tales of heartbreak and woe.
I call it singing that is absolutely emotionally honest and believable and easy to relate to (if you've ever been in any of these situations--and who hasn't?)

The man (with his voice) has the ability to heal/mend when it comes to matters of the heart. It certainly seems that way.
Can't praise him enough.

5 out of 5 stars Perfect Package for Al Green's Hits.......2007-05-16

All the best known Rev. Green songs are here, along with several lesser known, but still enjoyable, selections. This is must-have music for rock and rhythm and blues fans. You will find yourself trying to sing along.

5 out of 5 stars A Greatest Hits Masterpiece.......2007-03-29

A lot if not most greatest hits collections have some hits and some padding. Not this album. This is one great collection. The five songs tacked on at the end made this album a must own masterpiece. If you like Al Green's 70's output, you WILL like this CD.Every single song is a classic.Ol Skool Al Green fans (like myself) might already have at least a couple of his albums already, but this CD sums up why he's soul legend.

P.S.:Do yourself a favor and pick up some of his 70's era albums starting with "I'm Still In Love With You" if you haven't already.

5 out of 5 stars Very good.......2007-01-25

I've heard his music but never owned a CD of his, this one is really good and I enjoy it very much. Happy to add to my music collection.

If you know anything about Kirk Franklin, you'll know he's not one to sit still. With an emphasis on his early career classic Gospel leanings, Franklin rang the bell with his magnificent Rebirth of Kirk Franklin (2002), a release widely awarded and one that helped make him the best-selling gospel artist of all time. But Franklin has once again shifted his musical landscape. Hero is a lengthy and revealing masterpiece unparalleled in Christian music. The Dallas native has crafted his own musical tapestry masterfully combining elements of 70s era soul, classic Gospel, and contemporary urban hip-hop. Hero is full of admissions of struggle and challenges but Franklin always weaves a message of hope and encouragement to take the focus off the negative. You want in-your-face confession? Try not to be moved while listening to Franklin laying sins down on the table like cards in "Let It Go" or Franklin teaming with Marvin Winans in the soul-shaking, roof-raising "Brokenhearted." The title track - featuring Dorinda Clark-Cole - along with "Imagine Me" are classic examples of how Franklin balances the hard realities of real life against the hard faith about which he so readily sings.

One is hard pressed to not remember the Love Unlimited Orchestra when hearing "Looking for You" and the 70s references are reinforced with Stevie Wonder's guest appearance on "Why." The latter track is classic Franklin as he challenges every Christian to stop worrying about building churches and start building people. It also includes a delightful harmonica touch at the end from the great Stevie Wonder. At 20 songs and more than an hour, Hero might seem overwhelming. But there is rarely a dull moment here and you'll be better for the time well spent. --Michael Lyttle

I enjoyed the Kirk Franklin new CD because it was focused on praise and worship songs honoring the Lord. Its very upbeat and uplifting and yet also has tune for just mediating on the word. S. White from Arizona

5 out of 5 stars Kirk Franklin.......2007-05-14

This gospel artist is truly inspired by God. Everyone can relate to this album and I hope they see Jesus as their Hero and accept him as their Lord and Saviour after listening to this album.

4 out of 5 stars Hero Review.......2007-05-10

I was on the late train with getting this album. I kept hearing various songs from it and loved them. I was shy of buying yet another 17-20 song c.d. and only listening to 2 or 3 songs. I've always enjoyed Kirk Franklin, but don't really like the uptempo urban songs. His attempts at making songs relatable to all didn't sit well with me, such as "Looking for You" and "Could've Been". It's the same old thing, lots of base, whistles, and noise but they're not conveying much of a spirirtual message as it is trying to appeal to a younger genre. Both songs failed in that they have that old school funk wannabe sound. "Could've Been" lyrics are good, but you get lost in all the noise and Kirk narrating the choirs next chorus. All the other songs are amazing. The tempo flows together, and the spirit and message that he is trying to convey about God is loud and clear. This album really came from his spirit. It's so personal. I felt embarassed listening to the words of "Let It Go" the first time. It was like reading someone's personal journal. There is so much freedom in "Imagine Me". Kirk directed that choir to tell the story of the hopelessness in being lost, and how it is to come to the grace of Jesus Christ. When they sing gone, gone, gone, all gone you feel your spirit fly. It reminds me of Matthew 11:28-30 "Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am genle and humble in heart and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light."
If you haven't bought Hero yet. Get it now! You will not be disappointed.

evrybody was killing that "I Been Looking for you" track when this cd first came out, but hey, its a good song.

ive had the oppertunity of meeting kirk on a couple of events, and i must say, im happy to see him doing well and not acting Arrogant, and i cant wait to see him agin.

5 out of 5 stars Wow!.......2007-04-14

The second I heard "Looking For You" on BET, I knew I had to buy this album. The song is just so uplifting and everytime I hear it, I can't help but sing along. Although it took me awhile, I finally got it the other day. I got home and listened to it right away. I absolutely loved it. Of course "Looking For You" was a highlight, as well as "Imagine Me" and "Let It Go." "Imagine Me" is just such a beautiful song. The vocals brought chills with their heart-felt, touching delivery. I almost cry everytime. The message is something that this world needs to hear; it doesn't matter what you or other people have done in the past, God still loves you, even though it's hard to imagine, and you can change. You can break the cycle. "Let It Go" was extremely confessional on Kirk's part. He reveals his past in painful detail and it's just wonderful. Of course, the whole album was amazing to me. Even if you're not a Christian, you still need to hear this. The messages and stories behind the songs are extremely uplifting. I also loved the "Outro," where Franklin delivers an extremely inciteful social commentary. You need to buy this album today, no joke.

5 out of 5 stars The worship project, too!.......2007-06-16

"Forget all your problems. Forget all your worries;" those are a few words of the title track, "Brand New Day" and after absorbing this spirited musical effort from Jonathan Butler into your spirit, you will find it easier to do just that.

Brand New Day is Jonathan Butler's second full solo offering of inspirational music. The project could have easily been titled "The Worship Project Too" or "The Worship Project 2" for it is a glorious rendering of inspiring and uplifting compositions that I find are love songs to Jesus Christ and music with a message for the rest of us.

The South African born Butler, known in some circles as an accomplished smooth jazz guitarist and vocalist/R&B artist, is absolutely unashamed with sharing his personal relationship with Christ with the masses. Just as he so fervently did on his previous inspirational effort, he again demonstrates his ministry in song here. Butler is more than a guitar playing genius - he is an outstanding vocalist, accomplished writer, arranger and producer. Jonathan is from a very musical family and being the last born of 12 children, it appears that perhaps, God saved the best for last?

Brand New Day offers you 13 wonderful tracks and assisting Jonathan in the production area is the very capable, Luther "Mano" Hanes. who also assisted in the expert engineering of this project. My faves on this work include, "Brand New Day", "Mercy" (featuring Jonathan's daughter, Jodie), "Let The Redeemed Say So", "We Love to Praise Your Name" and " He Said He Would."

Jonathan Butler: "Brand New Day" - a blessing from beginning to end.

5 out of 5 stars OUTSTANDING!!.......2007-04-04

Ms. Patti's voice is as strong as ever and she is putting these bitches Beyonce and all these other sluts to shame with her amazing belting range. The F5's on Did you pray today were effortless and amazing. The G5 on Where love begins was strong fresh and unlike alot of singers she can clearly phrase her words when doing high notes! A5 on anything was out of this world! She held it in head voice then belted it!! then the amazing B5 pn More than He Loves you was...........WOW! All in all this album is great!!!!!

3 out of 5 stars Maybe The Wait Was Too Long.......2007-04-03

It is amazing that The Legendary Patti Labelle waited so long to record a gospel album. I mean I have been to a dozen of her shows and when the gospel starts pouring out of Patti's voice she can't be stopped and the house is jammin. She is so spiritual and I remember she said on the Oprah show in 1997 that she was working on her gospel album as we speak but who knew it would take 9 years to finish. I love Patti but the production on this cd is weak. Her voice is not on the front lines as it should be. I wish her better producers becuase she still has it!!!

2 out of 5 stars Patti's Generosity is Better Than The Material.......2007-02-21

Patti Labelle's unusual and soaring voice certainly wasn't used to its fullest advantage on this much anticipated CD. She is constrained and set way, WAY down in the mix and doesn't sing the gospel as much as she does the inspirational thing with a couple of gospel singing celebrities. Perhaps a live turn with this singer and some more traditional material we could have been gifted with something that could compete with Aretha's and Gladys's gospel CD's. "Walk Around Heaven" is an old time gospel standard that needed to be beefed up. She softens it with a soft second soprano infused background that ruins the effect of the lyric. The duet with CeCe Winans (Walk Away) is interesting with its dialouge interplay between the two women. The best thing about this project is that the essence of the gospel message is seen (if not heard) in Patti's donation to cancer research. God Bless Patti Labelle for her grand gift. Musicaly, this is a major disappointment.

Amazon.com essential recording

This Rhino re-release of Amazing Grace is at least as much a work of love as of marketing. The sound is beefier and clearer, but most importantly, the two-day church sessions are included. So, there's much more church (specifically, Reverend James Cleveland's marvelous orating) on the record, as well as contemporaryisms such as a cool organ rendition of George Harrison's "My Sweet Lord." Originally released as a double LP in 1972, Amazing Grace cracked the Billboard Top 10 on its release, making it one of the best selling gospel records of all time. Grace was recorded in a large Baptist church with an ultraenthusiastic audience in the pews, a full, funky band, and the Southern California Community Choir under the direction of Franklin's mentor, Cleveland. Her voice is melismatic and intensely emotional, yet pure and controlled, as if she is channeling the Holy Ghost. Franklin's father, the brilliant preacher Reverend C.L. Franklin, makes a brief, proud appearance, remarking, "She has never left the church!" Other highlights include the beautiful "Wholy Holy," an 11-minute, heart-stopping "Amazing Grace," and Inez Andrews's stirring "Mary, Don't You Weep." Way more than a return-to-the-roots record, this set is an inspired gospel-soul workout that arguably showcases Franklin's strongest singing ever. --Mike McGonigal

1 out of 5 stars THE LAST TRACK THAT IS ON THE 1ST TRACK.......2007-05-16

THE CD OVERALL IS OKAY, BUT I SHOULD HAVE RETURNED IT BUT MY DAUGHTER LOVE IT SO WELL, I AM NOT REALLY HAPPY WITH IT BUT I CAN LIVE WITH IT.

5 out of 5 stars A Revelation.......2006-12-10

Amazing Grace is widely acknowledged to be Aretha Franklin's magnum opus. With her 1972 return to gospel roots, she evolved from "Queen of Soul" to "The Queen." As her father, Reverend Franklin, notes to a rapt audience during one of the two night performances: "she can sing anything." This isn't filial boasting; it's an understatement. Recorded in a large Baptist church with the Southern California Community Choir, Aretha belts her way through traditional hymns, standards and pop tunes alike--and in the process redefines them. Her overall performance is a revelation. Period.

If praising Amazing Grace is needlessly redundant, the Rhino reissue itself is worth discussing. For those accustomed to the orginal record, be prepared for some changes. In the spirit of preserving the integrity of the event, the producers have reproduced both night's performance in their near entirety. Vocal overdubs peppered judiciously throughout the original release have been removed in favor of celebrating the imperfect but more immediate live setting. Thus, "Old Landmark" and "How I Got Over" sound noticeably rougher, though more authentic, than their studio-enhanced counterparts.

5 out of 5 stars A must have.......2006-11-09

This cd is timeless- If you love Aretha you must own this cd

5 out of 5 stars A treat.......2006-09-19

This is a remastered version of Aretha Franklin's breakthrough 1972 gospel album AMAZING GRACE. This was recorded in front of a live audience in 1972, culled from two live performances with the Southern California Community Choir, Ken Lupper, and the Rev. James Cleveland at the New Temple Missionary Baptist Church in Los Angeles. This two disc set features the original 14 tracks, and a bonus 15, making it 29 tracks in total. It is great to hear the music unedited! This is a must have for Aretha's big fans!

5 out of 5 stars I Love Aretha!.......2006-03-18

This is one of the best gospel compliations I have heard. I love the combination of Aretha Franklin and the choir and Rev. James Cleveland.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Howard Hewitt's new CD, "If Only".......2007-06-29

I am a huge fan of Howard Hewitt's from back in the Shalimar days as well, but more specifically, when he ventured out on his own. This is one singer that understands his emotional, feminine side, and can relate to women in a profound way with the words to his songs.

My fave song on his new CD, If Only, is "To Please U". We all remember back in the day when true love songs actually were meaningful - well, this is Howard Hewitt at his best. What saddens me is that I haven't heard this CD (or even Rick James' new CD, released around the same time), on local radio stations. It is sad that the balladeers of the 70's and 80's aren't recaptured in today's music. We need the spiritual message and spreading Love! This is why I will always be a fan of "Old School Music". That is where it was at!

There are several other songs that I just love on his new CD, "Is this True Love?" and "Can U feel me?". If you are a true Howard Hewitt fan, you will pick up this CD now! He is also on Rick James' new CD, Deeper Still, "Do you Wanna Play?". Amazon had a deal a few weeks ago on both CD's. Because of the samples and reviews, I went and bought both CD's. Love them! If you are a true fan and love that soulful sound unique to Howard Hewitt, pick up his new CD today, "If Only".

Enjoy!

4 out of 5 stars Hearfelt and beautiful........2007-06-29

Ex Shalamar vocalist, Howard Hewett will please his legion of fans with this Soul set that fuses Howard's relaxed vocal style with Smooth Soul. Several cuts grab the headlines including the stunningly beautiful "Can U Feel Me" and the title song.
Ballads like "Is This True Love" ooze emotion where Howard is joined by Gerald Albright on sax.
And if you love ballads check out the searing slowie "Don't U Wonder 2". Old school style numbers like "I Wanna Know" maintain a mid-tempo groove.
Hewett has never sounded better.
Give this record a spin, it is worth it!

5 out of 5 stars Shades Of Shalamar.......2007-06-11

Howard Hewitt has always been one of my favorite r & b singers. Since the days of Shalamar, he has had staying power when most of the singers that were around during the same time period have vanished. He has an incredibly, beautiful voice. This album just reminds his true fans how truly gifted he is. If you don't have this album, I hope you get it.

5 out of 5 stars Simply Amazing.......2007-06-06

First, the poster named Sunshine hit the nail on the head in describing this masterpiece. This has to be one of the most comprehensive CDs that I've listened to in a long time. Howard hit a homerun, scored a touchdown, and won a championship with this album. I purchased it the day after it came out and have been listening to it everyday since. I also have it in my MP3/4 player.

It is so hard to narrow down my favorites, but I will go with "If Only", "To Please U", "Can U Feel Me", "Is This True Love", "I Wanna Know", "How Do I Love You". The whole CD is beautiful. I also love how he gives glory and how he, in a mature way, sings about love, because love is where it's at. He also did a nice rendition with Gerald Albright on "Imagine". I just cannot stop gushing over this CD. It is modern, but signature Howard Hewett and the vocals are still impeccable.

3 out of 5 stars disappointing.......2007-05-30

Howard Hewett has a wonderful voice and style and it shows once again. But the material is very weak, almost only slowtempo tracks, quite similar to each other, and lyrics without much meaning. Why doesn't a mature man like Hewett sing realistically about mature relationships but instead of "girls", "babies" or "babes"...Will sell this CD as soon as possible.

Whoopi Goldberg has a lot of talents, but singing is not one of them. Hearing her massacre Motown classics like "Dancing in the Street," "Ball of Confusion" and "Ain't No Mountain High Enough" in her flat, dull voice on this soundtrack album would be harmless if a whole generation weren't being introduced to these songs through her clumsy performances. Several choirs turn in lackluster performances of gospel numbers. The disc's one redeeming moment is Aretha Franklin's overpowering delivery of "A Deeper Love," written and produced by C+C Music Factory. --Geoffrey Himes

5 out of 5 stars Great Soundtrack.......2007-06-16

I remember when this movie first came out. My brother rented it and let me watch with him. I watched it like 2 more times before he had to take it back. I then bought the movie and it is still one of my favorite movies today. I like the movie soo much because of the music. I had the soundtrack on a cassette tape and I use to listen to it all the time in my portable tape player (that seems like ages ago) and I'm only 21! Lol! Anyways this is a great album to listen to...especially when you love to sing like I do!!

5 out of 5 stars GREAT MOVIE AND CD........2007-01-04

I saw this movie a long time ago and loved it. The CD Soundtrack has great inspirational songs from the film and when I got it, I was so happy to sing along with it.

5 out of 5 stars Love the music.......2006-08-21

Loved the movie, loved the music. I purchased this CD for my 4 year old granddaughter who watched the movie and loved it. She likes to listen to it in the car.

5 out of 5 stars Let the whole earth sing!.......2006-05-03

Amazon.com, Geoffrey Himes must have a tin ear!

Forget the "official" review. The "joyful, joyful" finale alone is worth the price of this soundtrack all by itself! It truly captures the joy that should ALWAYS be the centerpiece of the Christian life.

5 out of 5 stars ONE OF THE BEST SOUNDTRACKS EVER.......2006-01-29

Please everybody ignores Amazon's review of this album. I am 16 years old, and I was three years old when this movie and soundtrack came out. And at an early age this entire project(movie and soundtrack) gave me a love of music, which is why I like to sing now and introduced me to quality music and great classics, and not like the mess that we hear today. So for anybody who has contemplated bying this project, listen if everytime you watch the movie, you cant help to sing along with them, them you need to purchase this album. Because it will certainly bless you.
