In his home state, San Antonio-born, Waco-raised Pat Green fills arenas and has the status of musical legend. Judging from Wave on Wave, his second major label release, he'll soon be making waves elsewhere, too. Green has an edgy, scuffed-up voice with passing similarity to Robert Earl Keen. Yet Green's originals like "Wrapped" and the haunting title tune are more often tinged with tender issues of the heart and soul rather than dark irony. Even on chugging, world-weary Texas-flavored heartland rockers like "I'm Tired" and "All the Good Things Fade Away," the tow-headed singer's winning affability and optimism glimmer faintly through the despairing lyrics. --Bob Allen

4 out of 5 stars You'd never guess it was Leppard if you only know their newer stuff.......2007-06-24

Over the years I've had it on 8-track, LP and CD. It's straight-forward old school metal that bears no resemblance to the radio friendly stuff that would emerge starting with Pyromania. Be sure to check out their sophomore release, "High 'n' Dry". It rocks even harder and has much better production.

Oh... "Darth Kommissar" mentioned in his review that Pete Willis and Steve Clark got kicked out of the band... Get a clue! Pete Willis WAS kicked out, but Steve Clark DIED, he did not get forced out.

3 out of 5 stars From not totally humble beginnings..........2007-05-23

And here it is, Leppards debut album and it's not half bad. Excellent stompers like Wasted and Rocks Off backed up by solid hard rock such as It Don't Matter and Answer to the Master help lay the foundation for one of the hard rock genres biggest beasts. The outright rawk rock of High 'n' Dry as well as parts of Pyromania have their genesis here. The intro to Rocket from Hysteria has it's roots in Satellite and the bands pandering to the US market is also born here with Hello America.

In fact the work debut is so perfect for this album. The slightly cheesy hard rock of Pyromanias heavier tracks is here prequeled by Rock Brigade and by a very very long stretch I can visualise the relation between Desert Song from the Retro Active disc in the apocalyptic feel of When the Walls Came Tumbling Down.

The youth and inexperience of the band are there for all to hear but it's forgiveable because at the end of the day most purchasers of this collection of NWOBHM sonics is buying it as a historical document and not because the dorky band name amuses them - lets face it everyone reading this review knows who Def Leppard is and their story right! And as such it's easy to forgive the inexperience especially when you consider that they got their act together quickly and you know just how hard these guys worked from day one.

PS - Am I the only one bemused by the fact that On Through the Night (the song) doesn't actually appear on On Through the Night (the album)?? Only in the NWOBHM!

5 out of 5 stars I don't know why Joe Elliot bags on this album so much.......2007-03-28

In almost every interview Joe Elliot has done since about 1987 he says this is his least favorite Def Leppard album. He's even gone so far as to say he hates it. I have NO idea why. It's great. Better than most of their post "Arenalize" music, IMO. You can hear on this album why Def Leppard were originally considered part of the New Wave of British Heavy Metal (along with Iron Maiden, Diamond Head, et al). You can also hear the melodic side too, which makes their transition to a "pop metal" band not all that surprising. Still, if you like early 80's hard rock, this is one of the best of the first half of the decade.

5 out of 5 stars A must have!!.......2006-11-04

Every Lep fan must have thier first album! A must have for your collection!

4 out of 5 stars The least Def of all Leppard albums........2006-09-13

Def Leppard's major label debut album is by far their rawest, which may or may not be a good thing depending on your point of view. Personally, I liked Mutt's contributions on later albums such as Pyromania and Hysteria, but in the case of Adrenalize the production seemed to go overboard.

Anyway, OTTN starts out with two tracks ("Rock Brigade" and "Hello America") that I usually skip, although they may be the two most talked about tracks on this album. That is, the two songs that came the closest to being considered hits, although this album never really became a hit, at least not in America. Next, we have a great slow burner in "Sorrow is a Woman" followed by one of the fastest and catchiest tracks, "It Could be You", a personal favorite. "Satellite" is a mid-tempo track which I usually skip, and "When the Walls Came Tumbling Down" picks up where "Sorrow is a Woman" left off, although I like Sorrow a bit more. The next two, "Wasted" and "Rocks Off" serve as exhibits A and B in response to anybody who ever called Def Leppard a pure pop band. "It Don't Matter" is another decent track, but I would not call it a highlight. "Answer to the Master" is one of the more memorable tracks here with vocals that build on each other perfectly, and last but DEFINATELY not least, we have "Overture", and epic part-ballad, part-rocker that sounds like nothing in the rest of the Def Leppard catalog. It seems that many reviewers have called this the strongest song on On Through the Night, and I am inclined to agree. The only thing that bothers me is the fact that the Leps never seemed to attempt a song like this with any of their later work.

The bottom line here is that OTTN is the most underrated album by what many would call an overrated band. Hence, those of you that dislike DL based on their late 80's/early 90's hits may want to give this one a chance.

5 out of 5 stars Love it so much, and love Pat!!!.......2007-06-11

I love this album. Wave on Wave is a classic song. I read some other reviews, and have to say I never heard Mike and the Mechanics "In the living years" in this song. This album is a little more commercial that Pat has been in the past, but that's ok. Because he makes this work too. He's our bar singing Texas boy, and still will be, but puts a softer touch on this album, which I can only call growth since it's still a great album. Other mentionable songs are "Poetry", and Guy like me, and Wrapped. His music is always going to be something you can kick back, and soak in - the background of anything you have going on.

1 out of 5 stars Texas Sized Disappointment.......2005-07-06

Pat Green had been one of my favorite artists untill now. I hope he stays in California, he belongs out there. For anyone wanting Texas music, try his earlier cd's. Way to keep it Texas Pat.

2 out of 5 stars Not His Best Effort--Should Stick with What Works........2005-02-17

While I will not be as harsh as some of the fans that did not like this album, I cannot agree that Pat Green really grew artistically on this album. He may have taken a step back in an attempt to expand his audience. Regardless of the comparison's made to Mike and the Mechanics, I like Wave on Wave (which makes sense if you believe the comparisons, because I also like Mike and the Mechanics). I purchased the album on the strength of Wave on Wave and on recommendations from a Texas friend that really enjoys Pat Green's music. I was a little disappointed. Out of the 13 songs on the record I only really enjoyed three. Wave on Wave, of course was the first. Then I liked All the Good Things Fade Away, which to me was a bit of the Grateful Dead meets Charlie Daniels, but hey I like hearing it. Finally Run is a nice mellow song to listen to. Pat Green has a strong voice that is clear and easy to listen too. I just think that his other albums were of better quality. I won't get rid of this album, I am just not sure that I'll reach for it often.

Need more evidence of the record industry's obsession with youth? Consider that budding Welsh diva Charlotte Church was a ripe, old 16 when this, her first greatest-hits anthology was released. Spanning her first four releases, as well as some outside collaborations and unreleased material, this 18-track collection underscores the soprano's seemingly boundless potential--as well as some potential career obstacles ahead. Her crystalline, still-maturing voice is best showcased on classically oriented works like Andrew Lloyd Webber's "Pie Jesu," Franck's "Panis Angelicus," and her now-ubiquitous rendering of Delibes' "Flower Duet." She also excels on folk traditionals such as "She Moved Through the Fair" and "My Langan Love." But overwrought productions like the already-dated "Dream a Dream" and "Habanera," a faux-flamenco take on Bizet, nearly get the best of her. Still, her promising duet with fellow young phenom Josh Groban on "The Prayer" and her mature, dreamy reading of A Beautiful Mind's "All Love Can Be," as well as strong performances on the previously unreleased "It's the Heart That Matters Most" and "Bridge over Troubled Waters," are ample evidence of her potential for rewarding pop crossover--if she doesn't retire by 21. --Jerry McCulley

4 out of 5 stars A Beautiful, Relaxing Project.......2007-06-15

My only other experience with Charlotte Church was seeing part of a PBS special on her, where she sang songs like "Some Enchanted Evening". I actually enjoy her voice on this style of music.

I love her rendition of "Amazing Grace". She also did good on covering "Bridge Over Troubled Water", though I was disappointed she didn't try the high note on the verses as Garfunkel did. My favorite on the project was "It's the Heart That Matters Most".

If I want some beautiful sounding music to relax to while I'm working, this would be a very good project for that.

3 out of 5 stars It just cannot be the end for Charlotte's classical career! :(.......2006-08-20

I'm just shocked that Charlotte has decided to end her classical career with this mediocre assortment of her most loved pieces from her other albums! I wish that she had re-sung all of the pieces to make them sound better than ever with her mature voice! To me, it seems disgusting that anyone would want to end their career with a last album that sounds the way this album does!

Her beginning pieces (Pie Jesu, My Lagan Love, In Trutina, Panis Angelicus, and Amazing Grace) were sung at the beginning of her classical career, and you can hear her flat vowels and shaky low notes. You can also hear it in "She Moved Thru the Fair". It's really annoying!

La Pastorella is a beautiful song to sing, and Church masters it beautifully! Just Wave Hello - the Ford Anthem, is also a beautiful piece, with amazing work from the orchestra.

Ave Maria is a complete annoyance! Church lays on the high notes too much, putting too much emphasis on them, and it's an annoyance! Her vowels are also flat on the high notes - I just hate it!

Dream a Dream is a very nice piece, leaning more towards the pop scene. Church still seems to make it work, and I would listen to it all day!

The Flower Duet is a beautiful song, but Church's vocals are strained, which makes it hard to listen to with a smile on your face! It's still beautiful!

The Prayer (w/ Josh Groban) is a very nice piece, originally sung by Celine Dion. She's still a little bit flat here!

All That Love can Be is sung beautifully, completely smooth and connected. The vocals are flawless and have a mezmerizing effect.

It's the Heart that Knows is a pop piece that Church sings with strong vocals. It's just showing us that she's ending her career as a classical superstar!

Tantum Ergo, Bridge Over Troubled Water, and Sancta Maria, are all beautiful pieces!

I am a Charlotte Chruch fan, no doubt, but I really didn't like this album! I still wish that she would stay with opera, but I guess dreams don't come true! I wouldn't advise you to buy this CD - but as long as you have Voice of an Angel, Charlotte Church (the Self Titled Album) and Enchantment, there's no need for this CD!

Sorry Charlotte!

5 out of 5 stars Charlotte Church.......2006-07-29

Love that voice!! This is a great CD and any one who had not heard this young lady sing should buy it and prepare for some musical enjoyment.

2 out of 5 stars Somewhat decent but still mediocre.......2006-06-07

I am well aware of Charlotte's age. However, I am also aware of her amazing vocals and powerful range. But these things don't make you a good singer. Charlotte chose to stick to opera in most of her songs. And face it, not just anyone can do opera.

Charlotte's voice is very well trained - maybe too trained. From a very young age she's been hitting the same notes as Sarah Brightman. But I feel that Charlotte's over-worked and not to mention overdone voice has been declining tremendously.

But I guess none of this really matters now because I haven't heard her do anything classical for a while. If you want to listen to Charlotte now, go find the song 'Crazy Chick.'

If you want to listen to other angel voiced sopranos, I'd go with Sarah Brightman or Renee' Fleming.

2 out of 5 stars R&B For Charlotte .......2006-05-07

If a bird can be annoying as in a Rooster Crowing in the morning, some people will like it. A dog can bark in the nights we sleep, some People will like it. A human voice so light, so vibrated within their own dimensions, people will like it, but not I. I never really saw the beauty of opera, agitating to the ears, just like a Rooster calling on it's hens. With that said, Charlotte needs to turn to Blues Rock or R&B. Yes, Boogie style Blues Rock, she has the voice for it. No matter how many here perceive Opera or know what should sound good, no opera singer could ever sing Blues without a voice and a heart for it. Not One! So why should a girl with soulful music embedded in her, do the same? I say, "it's time to really Rock Charlotte!"

This is THE definitive collection of Broadway hits. I have other collections, and none of them measure up. A great deal of care was obviously taken in compiling and presenting this box set. It covers a lot of ground, starting with some long-forgotten but still very enjoyable hits from the days of yore, and finishing with present-day favorites. To the best of my knowledge, the recordings are by those who made them famous. You won't be disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars TERRIFIC CD'S.......2006-03-23

Lots of your '80s favorites! We were disappointed that Thriller was not included. But, we knew that it wasn't before we purchased.

5 out of 5 stars 80's retro fans - a collection worth having.......2006-10-14

This is a great collection of very 80's tunes ... from the decade that just doesn't go away (like the 60's) ... great selection for the movie soundtrack. Brings back the lost days of youth ... and the songs that dominated the airwaves back then.

4 out of 5 stars Pure 80's Bubblegum! Yay!.......2006-07-14

The Go-Go's! Rick Springfield! Belinda Carlisle! Vanilla Ice! Madonna!...................................................
This can only mean one thing-the 80's! Just as the setting from the movie features Jenna living in the mid/late 80's, the soundtrack brings back some old favorites along with some 90's pop that a modern Jenna probably would have bopped along to as well. The result: an upbeat, catchy mix that most fans of the movie will want to snatch up pronto, as this is one of the best soundtracks to a romantic comedy in quite some time. While some may dismiss the soundtrack as pure bubblegum, instead of buying one of those Best Of The 80's discs at Wal-Mart or so, this soundtrack is more than likely the better bet. It can't go wrong with songs like Rick Springfield's Jessie's Girl, Madonna's Crazy For You, and Pat Benatar's Love Is A Battlefield.
The FINAL verdict: pick up a copy of this, as Jenna would say, fun, fabulous, and flirty soundtrack no matter whether you're a pop music lover, an 80's music lover, or both.

1.The Go-Go's, Head Over Heels-A cute fun song. It's played more than once in the movie and fits the high-energy, cutesy theme perfectly. 4/5
2. Rick Springfield, Jessie's Girl-A true 80's classic! I love Jessie's Girl and it would be a sin NOT to put it on this soundtrack. 4/5
3. Talking Heads, Burning Down The House-Before you write this song off as quirky and strange, some will actually find that it's a fun and good song to sway your head back and forth to. 4/5
4. Belinda Carlisle, Mad About You-I know, all Go-Go's and Belinda fans will hate me for this, but personally, I think this song sucks. The tune is awful and bland, and Belinda's normally good voice isn't showcased here at all. I expected better, and this song just doesn't fit the bill. 2/5
5. Whitney Houston, I Wanna Dance With Somebody (Who Loves Me)-This song is so good! I first heard it in the movie and then in the American Idol Game Boy Game, and I loved it! I was singing it all the time and it's a pure 80's classic. It's a good dancing song, and when I heard it, I knew it was an 80's song, and that's why it fits so perfectly on this soundtrack. 4/5
6. Lillix, What I Like About You-An awesome song, that, although it's not 80's, fits the teen girl/pop-music theme perfectly. I love it! 5/5
7. Vanilla Ice, Ice Ice Baby-I know this is an 80's classic and all, and it's definitely different, but I just don't see the deal here. It's OK and kinda funky, but not really all THAT great. 3/5
8. Madonna, Crazy For You-I don't like Madonna for more than obvious reasons, but this song is just superb! It has an awesome tune that's great to sing along to, and it would, like I have stated earlier, be a shame to NOT have put it on this soundtrack. Also, it was just a really wise choice to put this song at the end of the movie with the movie's storybook ending. 4/5
9. Billy Joel, Vienna-This song is good as well! I like the song very much itself, and it fits the whole train scene where Jenna's remorseful about how she's treated her parents and everything over the years. Thumbs up! 4/5
10. Liz Phair, Why Can't I?-Oh my gosh! This is my theme song! I sing it all the time and I absoultely love it! It's not an 80's song but it fits the theme of the movie so well and I have fallen in love with it! 5/5
11. Soft Cell, Tainted Love-Apparently another 80's classic as well, (I don't know. I wasn't around!), this song is OK and you can hear the whole "mechanical beat" background again in Rihanna's new smash single, SOS. 3/5
12. Pat Benatar, Love Is A Battlefield-An awesome song! It's basically a song about woman power, and it ROCKS! I love Love Is A Battlefield AND Pat Benatar, and it really went in well that it was Jenna's favorite song also. 4/5
13. Ingram Hill, Will I Ever Make It Home-I don't really know too much about this particular artist, but, if I'm not mistaken, they sound more 90's rather than 80's to me. Their sound is a little like Backstreet Boys meets Nickelback with more of a pop edge, and it's good. 3/5

5 out of 5 stars Great Movie Great Soundtrack.......2005-10-26

The movie was great and the music is awesome. All the songs have a great beat and I find that you can easily exercise to this soundtrack. It just puts you in a great mood.

5 out of 5 stars Brilliant!!!.......2003-08-11

I have the CD at home and the songs sound fabulous. I've heard the Houston Symphony's version of the Star Spangled Banner many times on TV as this anthem has been used at sign-off (when this was happening). It's as powerful a version you'll hear. Probably the finest patriotic music CD you can find out there.

Loved the CD! I am buying it to use with a Musical Freestyle Ride for a Quadrille. A horse oriented endeaver. The music will be perfect to bring positive patriotism to fairs and fund raisers for NYC.

5 out of 5 stars A really Fine Romance.......2007-07-05

It doesn't get any better than these two playing these guys! Some of it was recorded at Abbey Road Studios. Use your imagination... It's all just swell.

5 out of 5 stars A Musical Treat.......2006-01-08

"The true mission of the violin is to imitate the accents of the human voice, a noble mission that has earned for the violin the glory of being called the king of instruments." ~ Charles-Auguste De Bériot ~

Yehudi Menuhin and Stéphane Grapelli together had made some of the most beautiful music ever-recorded. And I believe that this is one of the many successful albums they recorded together. In this recording, both violinists have showed their excellent musicianship and interpretative eloquence as well, making it one of my most cherished CDs from my collection.

These are the main ingredients of a perfectly-made CD for your listening pleasure: mix violins, piano, bass and drums together, combine two terrific violinists, season with the best melodies in the 20s, 30s and 40s from Irving Berlin, Jerome Kern, Cole Porter and Rodgers & Hart. Add the musical talents of Nelson Riddle, Max Harris, Martin Taylor, Eddie Tripp, Alan Clare and the rest of the studio musicians. Now all you have to do is to sit back, relax and savor these stunning melodies coming from your CD player. Listen to it in full-volume and fill your music room with the sheer beauty of these classics.

One of my favorite musical instruments is violin. With its four strings, it gives a whole wide range of musical versatility and I simply love the fascinating sound it produces.

My personal highlights are the best tunes from Jerome Kern - "The Way You Look Tonight" (Nelson Riddle arranged this particular track and conducted the Woodwind and Brass section), "A Fine Romance," "Pick Yourself Up," "Why Do I Love You?" and "All The Things You Are."

My choices from Irving Berlin's gems are - "Isn't It A Lovely Day?" featuring the great artistry of Nelson Riddle in arranging and conducting, "Cheek To Cheek" and "I've Got My Love To Keep Me Warm."

The Cole Porter repertoire represented his musical sophistication in "Night And Day," "I Get A Kick Out Of You" and "Just One Of Those Things."

The choice cuts from the talented and creative team of Richard Rodgers and Lorenz Hart are "My Funny Valentine" and "Thou Swell."

Listening to this CD is so delectable and equivalent to having my favorite dessert - be it Tiramisu, New York Cheesecake, Black Forest Cake, Chocolate Soufflé, Créme Brulee, Chocolate Mousse or Chocolate-Coated Strawberries! ;)

A musical treat.

Album Description

This is The Cure's 6th studio album--brilliantly-fused brooding, artistic experimentation with pop instincts to propel the band onto the American charts for the first time.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars The Cure for musical ennui .......2007-02-15

Whenever I'm mourning the death of our old friend, Good Music, I just slap any Cure CD onto the disc player. The Cure is the definitive "80s and beyond" band. Their mercurial pop melodies mingled with singer Robert Smith's Poe-meets-Rimbaud-meets-Dr. Seuss lyrical musings and plaintive wail make The Cure a truly mesmerizing presence. All of its albums are stunningly solid efforts, including the recent "The Cure" and "Bloodflowers," but 1985's "Head on the Door" is its most intriguingly layered offering, serving up an experimental foray into various musical styles; bits of flamenco, Japanese new wave, funk, hard rock, and even jazz sneak their way onto this magical album. The best part is, the Cure manages all the musical genre-melding without surrendering its trademark surrealistic sound.

5 out of 5 stars a Very Simple Equation.......2007-01-09

Take one part renewed band confidence and camaraderie, one part incredibly strong songs, one part compelling visual identity ( this was, after all, the mid-Eighties ), throw in the fact that they're English and just *slightly* mad and you've got the recipe for the undeniable, unstopable force of "the Head on the Door." Helped no doubt by two of the best, most recognisable singles these lads have ever released, THOTD finally broke the Cure as a viably popular band around the world. I think the main reason is that this is an all-Cure-for-all-people kind of album. Neither completely bleak nor completely "pop", it has elements of all the sounds the Cure had explored up to that point. A few angry, tense moments ( "Push", "Screw" ), melancholy navel-gazing ("Sinking"), a bit of mindless dance fun ( "Close to Me", "the Baby Screams" ) some world music textures ( "the Blood" "Kyoto Song" ) and timeless pop ( "Inbetween Days", "A Night Like This", "Six Different Ways" ) all come together in this, a definite keeper in the Cure's catalogue. The remastered reissue is a real sonic improvement, the liner notes, commentary and photos are nice extras, and the demos and live performances on the bonus disc show the song development in a fascinating way. A Highlight of popular music, and Very Highly Recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Ripping review.......2006-08-26

I'm going to handle this the same was as Kiss Me and not say anything about the CD itself, what for? We all know it by heart anyway. The bonus stuff? Interesting, but hardly essential.

The question is how has the music improved from the "standard" CD? Methodology? I ripped the new CD using Winamp, and to be fair, re-ripped the old one, using the same settings. I kept neither one, because some kid on usenet did an even better job than me . . . hey, that's fair, I bought this, so quiet now. I'm not about to cheat Bob. In any case, I made a new playlist in Winamp and flipped back and forth between the rips.

Results? Like Kiss Me, more presence and punch in the new versions vs. the old. Is it startling? No, and it's possible that I could have tweaked the settings to bring up the old version to sound similar. Limitations? X-Fi driving an HK 3400 into Ascends and a Sony subwoofer . . . and totally wrecked 55 year old ears.

Recommendation? Cure fans must of course have it. No one else is listening, so I don't suppose it matters much what else I say! But it's not an earthshaking improvement I'm afraid. Faith was helped quite a bit, the original was kind of muddy in comparison, but as you go forward the improvements get harder to find. Ah well, let's move onto the grail. I'm sure that will bring the audiophiles out of the woodwork!

CD Review: The Cure - The Head On The Door: Remastered And Expanded Edition

Have you ever been to a concert where nobody showed up?

I've actually been to a number of these type of shows over the years. I can remember for example seeing Genesis with Peter Gabriel around the time of Selling England By The Pound with about 50 other people in the 8000 seat capacity Seattle Center Arena. The crowd was so small they actually put the stage in the center of the arena and had one full half of the place curtained off. Genesis themselves, God Bless Em', still delivered their full theatrical spectacle even if it must've felt more like a dress rehearsal to them. So roughly fifty delighted fans we're treated to Peter Gabriel complete with his various fox heads and masks, weaving his stories around the wildly progressive for the time sounds of Genesis at a creative peak, years before they devolved into the worst formula rock band of all time under Phil Collins leadership.

I had another such experience seeing The Cure about ten years later in the same building. Same deal. A curtained off stage in the center of the arena this time before a slightly more respectable crowd of about 200 devotees decked out in various shades of gothic black.

My interest in the band at the time was strictly casual as the darker sides of my musical taste ran more to bands like Echo And The Bunnymen and the lesser known Chameleons. So I really didn't know what to expect from the band who would soon launch a million or so covens of goth kids around the globe.

In a word, The Cure were dark. Very dark.

So much so it prompted the friend I went with to come up with one of the most original one sentence reviews of a concert I've ever heard.

By the second song my friend looked over at me and said, "Glen, it's midnight and the crows are beckoning." It was at once the most hilarious and the most accurate description of what we saw on that particular night I've ever heard.

But there was also some very interesting musical terrain being mined by the Cure onstage that night. In between all of the darker hues, you could make out some very distinctive pop hooks and even a hint of funk in the basslines. Underneath the wiry jet black hair and pasty white facial makeup, Robert Smith was also an impressive vocalist who managed to somehow make the dark detachment of his songs sound almost, well emotional.

About a year after that show The Cure released The Head On The Door, the album many fans cite as the record which began The Cure's evolution from the goth dungeonmasters that I saw in concert that night into the worldwide pop phenomenon that produced a string of hit albums like Kiss Me, Kiss Me, Kiss Me and Disintegration.

And make no mistake about it, with The Head On The Door, Robert Smith was intent on broadening the musical canvas of The Cure. Coming off what was arguably The Cure's most non-commercial album ever, The Top, The Head On The Door sounds like a downright collection of pop singles by comparison.

The themes of darkness and isolation are still prevalent and the album still has enough minor chords to keep the black nail polish crowd happy. But there are plenty of hints here at the poppier direction to come, most notably on tracks like the leadoff "In Between Days" and the hit single "Close To Me."

On "Kyoto Song", Smith incorporates oriental brushstrokes into the mix. On the album's standout track "A Night Like This," the band mines a more familiar dark drone which is then broken up about midway through by the sort of gorgeous sounding sax solo you'd find more at home on a Supertramp record.

Returning bass player Simon Gallup again provides a hard funk bottom popping his way through what would otherwise be more standard Cure fare like "Screw." The seeming contrast of a decidedly funkier rhythm section and the more standard doom and gloom of The Cure actually works remarkably well throughout The Head On The Door.

On the remastered treatment of this new version from Rhino, those nuances--from Gallup's bass popping to the broader textures added to the Cure's trademark drone--are newly enhanced in the mix, making this reissue that all too rare case where the treatment is actually warranted. The recording here is mixed several notches brighter, allowing the high end to shine far above the droning low of the original version.

The bonus disc is also truly a real bonus. Nearly all of Head's original 10 tracks appear here in various stages of their growth in demo versions. The result is a rare glimpse into the actual creative process where you are able to almost visualize these songs as they began to take shape. On "A Night Like This" for example, the smooth sax solo of the final version veers into more experimental territory, sounding almost like something out of the Coltrane book of avant garde jazz.

Rhino has also reissued new remastered versions of The Top and Kiss Me, Kiss Me which I will most definitely check out based on the results here. If those reissues are anywhere near as surprisingly good as this, this represents an all too rare example of the label getting it right, rather than just simply cashing in.

3 out of 5 stars A dramatic shift........2006-08-18

A distinct change of direction, "The Head on the Door" finds the Cure drifting towards pop music for the first time. This is really enabled by the band-- with the return of bassist Simon Gallup to the fold, leader/vocalist/guitarist Robert Smith had the anchor that the band needed. Gallup could play the morbid, goth sort of basslines that the band cut their teeth on, but he could also manage a bright funk and pop sound. Ditto for drummer Boris Williams, who provided a fine foil for Gallup in the rhythm section. But just as key was the presence of guitarist Porl Thompson, who allowed Smith to construct shimmering guitar textures. The group is rounded out by founding member Lol Tolhurst, contributing on keyboards (although in the liner notes, his contribution is played down quite a bit).

The shift in sound is obvious right from the start-- bright acoustics, delicate synths and an overall light touch lead the superb "In Between Days". Likewise throughout the album, this variation of texture is what carries the record-- the minimalist Asian textures ("Kyoto Song"), Spanish gypsy rhythms ("The Blood"), funky bass (standout track and single "Close to Me") and frantic, punky stuff that wouldn't've sounded out of place on their debut but for the improved songwriting and musicianship ("The Baby Screams").

Still, for all this good, sometimes it gets a bit dull ("Six Different Ways") and the pieces occasionally don't take off and aren't exactly memorable ("Push", "Screw"). The net result is a mixed bag, when it's good, it's great, but while none of it is bad per se, some of it doesn't stand out.

The deluxe edition of the album features fantastically remastered sound, a set of demos including material that didn't make the album, and a handful of live tracks. It makes for a fine collection and in many cases, the evolution of the pieces is obvious. What's noticably missing is the significantly hotter single remix of "Close to Me" that ended up on "Staring at the Sea" (and subsequently "Greatest Hits"). At the least, the whole record sounds absolutely fantastic courtesy of remastering and includes a nice booklet detailing the band's history during the recording.

A lot of folks really love this album, I've always looked at it as a stepping stone on the way to "Kiss Me Kiss Me Kiss Me"-- it's a decent record, but they'd very shortly do much better.

5 out of 5 stars One of the greatest, briefest power-pop bands ever.......2006-12-19

Dang KATW were a powerhouse pop group! Rockin' & rollickin'. And Katrina Leskanich's voice was a marvel -- galeforce and gorgeous. This great collection is a real bargain. So many wonderful songs beyond the obvious monster hit. "Do You Want Crying," "That's The Way" and "Is That It?" are personal favorites. My only complaint (sorry!) is the omission of Vince de la Cruz's beautiful "Sleep On My Pillow," one of the all-time great lost rock ballads. The lyrics, melody and Katrina's vocal practically drip with dignity and heartbreak. Makes me WEEP on my pillow!

4 out of 5 stars Good Older Artist.......2006-03-15

It is a fun dancing tune. I love listining to it in my car.

4 out of 5 stars Walking on anything else is a waste of time!.......2001-02-02

From the time i peeled off the celophane to my sock-footed dance through the apartment as I listened to Katarina walk on sunshine for the second time, this album, trough and through, makes me wet as manilla in the monsoon season. The earthy tones and guttural feel provide an intensity not felt since the J.Giels Band laid down their epic track "Centerfold." Comparisons begin with Lakeside and end with the Pretenders!

5 out of 5 stars second only to the PRETENDERS.......2001-01-27

great disc. of course there were no discs, when this was a celebrated brindisi at the fraternity house.

"walking on sunshine" is a timeless work; contains all the classical elements, while retaining its free composition. has been highly debated because of Katrina and her Waves striking semblance to the PRETENDERS.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best female voices in modern music.......2000-08-25

most of us only know Katrina for the hit "Walking on Sunshine" but the numerous tracks on this greatest hits set are just as catchy and uplifting. Katrina knows how to rock out and have fun. "Sun Street" is reminiscent of the Beatles and "That's the Way" makes you want to jump up and start clapping and shaking your fist in the air. They do a superior version of "Going Down to Liverpool" which was written by a member of the Waves and was later covered by the Bangles. One listen and you will be hooked. It's a fun CD!
