1 out of 5 stars YOU'LL BE SORRY!!!.......2007-05-01

Not one original singer on this putrid album. Brought two months ago, and literally don't know where I laid it down and get this, I'm glad I can't find it! Can't say you weren't WARNED!!!!!

1 out of 5 stars What A Disappointment!!!!.......2007-01-22

Like others, I was expecting a compilation of awesome country hits, but to my surprise, none of the original artists are featured. The Alan Jackson/Jimmy Buffett duet of "It's Five O'Clock Somewhere" is based off the live recording, and the two alleged artists actually try to do the monologue at the end of song. Talk about tacky!! They sound like B-movie actors misqueing from a script. Don't waste your money

1 out of 5 stars Save Your Money!!!.......2007-01-09

Unfortunately I purchased this album before the other reviews were posted. When I saw the track listing on the album jacket I thought I was in for a real treat (what a great compilation of hit songs!). However, NONE of the songs are preformed by the original artists and the quality is horrid. I feel as if I were deceived because they should have made a note of the artist substitutions in the item description. Don't make the mistake I did and SAVE YOU MONEY!

1 out of 5 stars Best Country Hits of Today.......2007-01-03

the worst cd ever, I have never heard anything worse!

2 out of 5 stars Gentry- not so good.......2006-11-20

Very disapointed in the CD no original artist. Was hoping for something better this did not deliver. Don't waste your money.

5 out of 5 stars Great Song Collection.......2004-08-14

This album has many great artists, new and old to bluegrass music. These are all great songs, NOT like some collections that you might buy for one or two songs, the rest being songs you don't like or skip through. I listen to BLUEGRASS TODAY over and over again, at work, in the car, at home. I am very pleased ! I love it!

Jim Lauderdale is among the most creatively expansive of Nashville's commercially bankable songwriters. Ralph Stanley is an ageless bluegrass icon. Put 'em together and you have one of the finest country albums to come out in 1999, not to mention a feather in Lauderdale's cap as a recording artist. Unlike Steve Earle, who put out an excellent bluegrass album (The Mountain with Del McCoury) earlier in '99, North Carolina-born Lauderdale sounds like he grew up singing this stuff. He wrote or cowrote 9 of the 15 tracks, including the gospel-sounding title track and the a cappella "Like Him." When Stanley comes in with his otherworldly high harmonies and ringing banjo, you may feel like singing today as well. --Rick Mitchell

5 out of 5 stars Joy, Joy ,Joy to my Heart.......2006-09-15

An impeccable slice of Bluegrass. Move over,'O Brother' and make room for Lauderdale, Stanley and the Clinch kids. If I need to discriminate, for the sake of the uninitiated, I'd nominate the central part of the disc as my pearl of deep colour, starting with,'Joy, Joy' Joy', the memorable,'Like Him','I Wish Today Could be Tomorrow', and,'Another Sinner's Prayer'. Ralph's part in these songs is hugely responsible for my favouritism; an emotive tool that can make you kneel in gratitude. Lauderdale is a superb songwriter/performer and this set places him squarely on my Bluegrass map.

5 out of 5 stars 2 Genuises.......2005-05-04

It's funny the mood one gets into at times. I was thinking about the movie Oh Brother Where Art Thou and its' soundtrack. So I am strolling through my local FYE mall record shop and I see this interesting CD cover in the used bin. I layed down my $7.00 and took it home. On the pile of unlistened too CD's it layed for about 2 weeks. Well, I popped it into the kitchen, under counter, SONY CD player and what a pleasent surprise. This Lauderdale/Stanley endeavor is great. The CD gets out of the gate with a great Lauderdale penned tune, title track of the CD, I FEEL LIKE SINGING. This along with the cuts, MAPLE ON THE HILL, ANOTHER SINNERS PRAYER, HIGHWAY THROUGH MY HOME, and WHO WILL SING FOR ME make this a wonderful musical journey. Great song writing by Jim Lauderdale and wonderful Bluegrass by Ralph Stanley and the Clinch Mountain Boys. This CD is a pleasure. Buy it.

4 out of 5 stars Powerful Music.......2004-02-29

Teaming up with the reigning patriarch of bluegrass music Ralph Stanley and his Clinch Mountain Boys isn't a guarantee for success, but Jim Lauderdale makes this pairing an absolute joy from start to finish. Unlike another album that came out the same year using the same formula (Steve Earle's pairing with the Del McCroury Band), Lauderdale wrote (or co-wrote) only about two-thirds of these songs, and will on occasion take a back seat to Stanley, who takes the lead vocal on the a capella "Like Him," one of nine Lauderdale originals.

Lauderdale slips into the bluegrass genre like he was born into it. The opening track, "I Feel Like Singing Today," is another Lauderdale original that begins the album on an upbeat toe-tapping note. Lauderdale's songwriting partner on a couple tracks is none other than Grateful Dead Lyricist Robert Hunter. They penned the rollicking "Joy, Joy, Joy" and "I Will Wait for You."

Lauderdale's originals hold up well along such bluegrass chestnuts as "You'll Find Her Name Written There" and "What About You," perhaps more closely associated with Bill Monroe and Flatt & Scruggs respectively. In addition there are a pair of Carter Stanley gems, "Harbor of Love" and "Who Will Sing for Me."

The album closes on a high note with Ralph Stanley taking the lead vocal on the Lauderdale original "Who Thought the Railroad Wouldn't Last." This is powerful music. In his liner notes Lauderdale says he wants to "celebrate and share" the music of Ralph Stanley. He has succeeded gloriously. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED

5 out of 5 stars Classic Bluegrass Sound, Great Bluegrass Variety.......2004-02-21

I've always felt that there are two types of bluegrass music. There is the high, lonesome sound filled with dark lyrics that are most appropriate when driving down a dark, windy road among tall, Southern pines. On the other side of the spectrum, there is the joyful, feel-good kind of bluegrass that puts you in the mood to make homemade ice cream on a sunny Sunday afternoon. When Jim Lauderdale teams up with Ralph Stanley, you can set high expectations for a well-written vocal masterpiece that puts you in the mood for making some ice cream and you will not be disappointed. Ralph Stanley, affectionately called Dr. Ralph by his hard core fans, has been making bluegrass music for fifty-five years, but has recently become nationally recognized due to the success of the O Brother Where Art Thou soundtrack. Jim Lauderdale is a country traditionalist who has penned songs for such stars as George Strait, the Dixie Chicks and Mark Chesnutt.

Jim and Dr. Ralph have recently teamed up on I Feel Like Singing Today, an album recorded on the Rebel Records label. I Feel Like Singing Today is true to it's title. Halfway into the first song, coincidentally the title track, your toe is tapping and you find yourself harmonizing with Dr. Ralph, Jim and the Clinch Mountain Boys. About half of the songs on the album are gospel songs, while the other half of the songs are made up of topics such as love, loss and the highway intruding upon one man's land. Of the gospel songs, the most breathtaking piece is "Like Him." "Like Him" is written by Lauderdale and sounds much like a hymn written a century ago. The harmony is chilling as Lauderdale, Stanley and the band lay down their instruments and bring the listener into a magical world. Stanley's high harmonies complement the low voices of Lauderdale and the Clinch Mountain Boys on this a cappella piece. As the next track, "I Wish That Today Could Be Tomorrow," plays, you once again become aware of your surroundings and are transported from your "Like Him" trance into reality. "I Wish That Today Could Be Tomorrow" is a playful track that describes the impatience of two young lovers waiting on their wedding day. Every track on the album is special and time simply does not allow for an apt description of every great tune. Nine of the 15 tracks are written or co-written by Lauderdale, who seems to move with ease from his regular honky-tonk repertoire to bluegrass. The vocals mingle together as if Dr. Ralph and Jim were made to sing together and the upbeat songs just make for a good time. I Feel Like Singing Today is one of the best albums of recent times and should be in every bluegrass fan's collection.

5 out of 5 stars I feel like singing today........2000-04-09

This is one of the best CDs of last year, bluegrass or any style. Ralph Stanley, as always, is stunning, and Lauderdale proves himself as one of the finest songwriters in the business. "I Feel Like Singing Today" is the kind of song people could be singing 100 years from now. "Like Him" is one of the most beautiful gospel songs I have ever heard recorded. It's hard to believe the song isn't 100 years old. With Steve Earle's "Mountain" and Dolly Parton's "The Grass is Blue" both also coming out last year, my CD player isn't getting much rest. All three CD's are great, but this one is hard to top.

Now and again a songwriter appears, as if out of nowhere, and reminds you just how far and deep a good song can go. Tanya Savory is that kind of songwriter. In truth, she hasn't really been a secret. Town to Town, her 1998 independently released debut (subsequently picked up for wider distribution by Rounder), is the work of a mature artist in full command of timeless folk melodies, images worthy of classic country song craft, and knowingly detailed narratives that suggest the fiction of Bobbie Anne Mason and Eudora Welty. That may sound like overstatement, but Savory's visions--of small-town struggles, intricate relationships, and the beautiful and fearful power of nature--are rendered with a wise, observant eye and sung with an unaffected, clear voice. The sweet acoustic settings, provided by accomplished bluegrass and country musicians such as Wanda Vick and Nancy Given Gardner, are set tastefully around (but never over) Savory's stories. These songs will raise your hopes, test your heart, and lead you through landscapes you won't soon forget. --Roy Kasten

4 out of 5 stars 2 Blocks from My Back Door.......2005-02-28

Tanya Savory's "Town to Town" is an excellent folk set that is one that still reads well 6 years after its initial release. "40, 80, or 10" is probably my favorite track with Wanda Vick's fiddle punctuating this uptempo track about a love of travelling & America's highways, "Now just 2 blocks from my back door I can hear the whisper of 24 & even when I'm sleepin' it comes creepin' like a dream." The opener, "When the River Rose," is also another lovely little folk gem with Tanya's homey guitar strum and confident vocals, "5 miles of sand & a floodwall from the 50s, 7 engineers stepping on each other's toes ... it sure didn't count for much when the river rose." "Different Shores" is also a lovely melody with John Mock's tin whistle giving an ethereal setting along with Nancy Given Gardner's beautiful harmony. "Reuben Brown" is also an excellent ballad about a farmer grown old. "Town to Town" is an excellent folk set, one to seek! Enjoy!

5 out of 5 stars What Folk is About!.......2001-01-23

I wish she had more CD's. I like every song on the CD, which is extremely rare for any CD. This definitely folk at its best.

5 out of 5 stars This is what songwriting is all about!.......1999-10-26

This is a very refreshing breath of songwriting fresh air. The stories are compelling without relying on radioable hooks and the arrangements are spare, crisp and lovely. A beautiful blending of country, folk and bluegrass (just enough banjo and mandolin to tweak your fancy) sung in a nice clear voice. Buy it, you won't regret it.

4 out of 5 stars A brand new sound ..with a familiar feeling!.......1999-07-02

One of my favorite CDs so far this year...thank God there is music like this out there that is a combination of several styles...country/folk/bluegrass/pop..Without being schlocky country or whiny tie- dye mentality folk or male dominated bluegrass! For anyone who likes Mary Chapin Carpenter or Iris Dement, this is a CD for you. Intelligent but accessible lyrics, wonderful melody and voice, and top notch production!

    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Tried, true, & tested bluegrass hits from Rounder Records.......2005-11-21

Playing Time - 65:57 -- At one time, the words "bluegrass" and "hit" would be contradictory. However, in more recent times with the great success and growth of the genre, bluegrass music can claim to have many top songs that are garnering significant radio airplay. Every song on this Rounder Records compilation placed in the Top Ten of Bluegrass Unlimited magazine's National Bluegrass Survey. So this sampler gives us a generous 66 minutes of tried, true and tested bluegrass. The chart is based on feedback from radio DJs and programmers so people that know the music have weighed in to name these songs as among the best of the best contemporary bluegrass dating from 1985-2005. Cuts come from a number of stalwarts such as Doyle Lawson, The Cox Family, Alison Krauss and Union Station, Tony Rice, Rhonda Vincent, Ricky Skaggs, J.D. Crowe, and Claire Lynch. Other emerging acts like Blue Highway, Longview, Alecia Nugent, Open Road and The Grascals are more recently on the scene, but no less impressive with their hits. It's impressive to see women playing such a prominent role among these hits. Hits are also drawn from highly-acclaimed solo releases Rob Ickes, Dan Tyminski, and Stuart Duncan. Unfortunately, a few of these groups who had hits (Johnson Mountain Boys, Weary Heart, Rambler's Choice) are no longer together. The 20-page CD booklet offers musician credits, a short summary about each group, and Rounder discography for further exploration.

"Bluegrass Hits" is a wonderful set from a leading label in the genre. It also makes a strong statement about where bluegrass music is headed. Listen to this album in context of what has gone before. I was surprised to hear the banjo and fiddle relegated to minor roles in some of the arrangements. In "Me and John and Paul," (IBMA's 2005 Song of the Year) there are percussion and pedal steel in the mix. Compared to the seminal works of bluegrass' founders, we hear songs with slower tempos and smooth, polished Nashville-style vocals. The resonator guitar also appears to be playing a more and more prominent role in the genre's current sound. "Bluegrass Hits" closes with the earliest track recorded, a 1988 version of the traditional "Dream of a Miner's Child" from the Johnson Mountain Boys. It's an interesting way to close this album - on a note that recognizes the spirit and significance of classic bluegrass from a band, now defunct, that never compromised their traditional sound. 5 out of 5 stars From Out of Nowhere . . ........2006-11-06

. . . while David Grisman was taking a break from his ground-breaking "Dawg Music" came this gem of a traditional bluegrass album, featuring:

    1) The rock-steady Herb Pederson on banjo (his letter-perfect reading of Earl Scruggs' "Foggy Mountain Chimes" and his break on "Hot Corn, Cold Corn" are required listening for any aspiring picker)

    2) Spirited fiddling by James Buchannan

    3) The always reliable Emory Gordy Jr. on bass

    4) Pleasing vocals from the "Dawg" himself ("Little Miss Blue Eyes," "The Children Are Crying")

    5) Some absolutely etherial singing by some longhair refugee from the country-rock scene by the name of Vince Gill ("Lonesome River," "Making Plans"). I hear he's had a bit of success since then.

It's always amazing to me how certain combinations of musicians find each other, what the common thread may be, and what they can produce (as well as what might have been . . . ). What's notable about this collection is the tight harmony singing of Gill, Grisman, and Pederson, particularly on "Making Plans" and The Osborne Brothers' classic "Once More." Truly a great one-shot effort.

5 out of 5 stars Great Bluegrass By Great Guys.......2001-06-07

Do yourself a favor and get this cd, if you like bluegrass you won't be disappointed. Along with a (much younger) Vince Gill appear the great Emory Gordy Jr, Jim Buchanan, Dave Grisman, and Herb Pedersen. If you know bluegrass, you already know what that means.

3 out of 5 stars Lonesome River song thrills, chills to the bluegrass bone!!!.......1999-01-31

Alas, my computer would not allow me to preview the songs from the site. I have, however, heard the song Lonesome River done from this CD on a Nashville station. It is classic bluegrass that I could listen to repeatedly, for days on end, I believe. I will be purchasing this CD. I can't wait to here the rest of the songs. I am extremely hopeful that the rest of the selections will be as soul-satisfying as Lonesome River is. I actually would have awarded more stars, based on this one song, but thought that I really should hear more than one. Thus, I awarded 3 stars as sign of great expectations.

This is not the guitarist Shawn Lane from Memphis! Please look for Jonas Hellborg in the search section to get his music. No Offense to this guy! I came here looking for the other Shawn Lane. Amazon should make it clear that these two are different guys.

1 out of 5 stars Might be great but not the Shawn Lane you're looking for.......2003-09-28

I don't mean any disrespect to this gentleman, but it should be stated that this is not the Shawn Lane who passed away last week in Memphis. The guitar virtuoso Shawn Lane can be found if you search for Jonas Helborg.

5 out of 5 stars Superb collection featuring Lane's singing, picking, fiddlin.......2003-09-11

Fans of Shawn Lane's singing, picking, and fiddling with Blue Highway can stop reading here, log off, run down to Cartwright's Music, and buy All For Today. This new solo project is just what you would expect: a superbly produced collection of the type of material Blue Highway does when featuring Lane. And there are a few entertaining surprises (I'll save these for later).

The material covers a healthy range within the bluegrass context. Lane's voice is perfect for quiet acoustic numbers of the type associated with singer-songwriter performers--the cleverly crafted and moving "I Call Him Son" brought to mind some of the seventies material of Davy Loggins or maybe Dan Fogelberg. "All for Today," a tribute to Lane's grandfather, would slide neatly into that category as well. Moving further up the bluegrass trajectory are some medium tempo numbers that, in a more just world, would be on country radio: "I Don't Want You To Go" should be leading the Nashvegas hit parade, and "When It's All Said And Done" and "Christ the Lord" should be giving our ears a few minutes of quality on Christian Contemporary stations.

But Lane does not ignore the driving bluegrass side. Fans of the hardcore approach will like his hyped-but-traditional treatments of the Carter Family's "Darlin' Nellie Across the Sea" and Ralph Stanley's "Love Me Darling Just Tonight," particularly since these cuts and a couple more feature the banjo of Tom Adams. Adams stands as the measure for his generation of how traditional bluegrass banjo should be played. His rhythm, emphasis, and perfect tone are almost a distraction--not because he steps on the vocal (he never does), but because they are so very, very good. I cannot think of another banjo player who, working in the Scruggs vocabulary, has created such an immediately recognizable style.

Adams in not the only instrumental stand-out, however. Virtuosi Rob Ickes and Jerry Douglas split the resonator guitar chores, and with the results we've come to take for granted. But the other main feature for me is Barry Bales, who lays down the bass on most tracks. With Bales's huge, even notes on the bottom and Ickes's and Douglass's well chosen fills on top--coupled with the very light-in-the-mix rhythm guitar--Lane can risk the kind of sparse arrangements that most bands sacrifice to a cluttered middle. These charts remind me of Lynn Morris's recent projects, in which you just know you are hearing every note played, nothing on the sonic spectrum is wasted, and the middle is never muddy.

Now for the surprises. Though Lane has produced a solo album to feature, we assume, his great vocals, he gives his wife Gracia the spotlight on two tracks. Given the current growing popularity of women leads in bluegrass, maybe that's not too surprising (it's good, though). So try this: the Carl Jackson-penned duet number "Jesse and Me" starts you imagining that Lane has brought in his brother as well (assuming he has one). But a quick trip to the liner notes tells us that this "sibling" is none other than Ronnie Bowman. Surprised yet? One more try: In a pairing I would not have anticipated, taking over the lead vocal track for Mark Visage's "Sawmill Man" is Larry Sparks, and the number fits him as only a fine number can fit a fine singer like Larry Sparks. Passing around the lead vocal chores makes for a better album all the way around, and it does nothing to detract from the focus on Shawn.

But that selection shared with Sparks reminds us of one more thing: Shawn Lane has about the smoothest tenor voice in bluegrass, and the effect is particularly striking when he's flying above a lead singer with the rugged qualities of Sparks (or Wayne Taylor). It is not to slight Lane's mandolin picking, fiddling, songwriting, and sensitive lead vocals, to say that none of these skills rival his heart-breaking tenor work.

All For Today will not disappoint Shawn Lane's fans. It does the good things we buy a solo album for--and it makes us anxious for a new release by Blue Highway. (Bill Jolliff, reviewer, Nwbluegrass Yahoogroup)

      1 out of 5 stars Oops! Duh!.......2003-09-09

It would be helpful to lovers of both genres to make clear to customers that Shawn Lane the bluegrass artist is not Shawn Lane the fusion guitarist. It is very misleading if not false advertising to promote a completely different artist in the wrong category and with recommendations for the other artist with the same name. An honest enough mistake, but now that we have all been informed, how long shall we keep selling CD's to unsuspecting customers who think it is something else?

4 out of 5 stars Tasteful album, expressive melodies, evocative lyrics.......2003-05-27

Shawn Lane closes his new solo album, "All For Today," with the optimistic title cut that "it's all for today, but there'll be more tomorrow." I can hardly wait for his next solo undertaking. Blue Highway's mandolin player and vocalist, Shawn Lane steps into the spotlight on this album to feature his multi-instrumental, singing and songwriting skills. Lane plays guitar, mandolin, fiddle; sings lead and harmony vocals; and writes eight of the twelve songs. Shawn has previously worked with Ricky Skaggs and Kentucky Thunder, Doyle Lawson and Quicksilver, and Larry Sparks. "All For Today" offers a smooth, contemporary acoustic music sound, with banjo appearing on less than half of the tracks. Songs range from the ballad, "I Call Him Son" with only guitar accompaniment to songs like "Love Me Darling Just Tonight" with full bluegrass band accompaniment and the hardest-driving "Darlin' Nellie Across the Sea," with its uptempo arrangement which I wish also would've included some wailing fiddle. Shawn and his wife, Gracia Lane, handle most of the vocals. Gracia sings lead on "When I See Your Face" and "Little Mountain Home." Larry Sparks makes a cameo appearance as lead vocalist on "Sawmill Man," and Ronnie Bowman sings lead on Carl Jackson's "Jesse And Me." Besides Lane, the other excellent instrumental players on this project include Tom Adams, Barry Bales, Jason Burleson, Jerry Douglas, Rob Ickes, Jason Moore, and Tim Stafford. This is a tasteful album, with expressive melodies and evocative lyrics. With a little acoustic country, bluegrass, and Gospel, Shawn Lane's material is as eclectic and enjoyable as his varied instrumental and vocal abilities. This CD goes over like a million bucks. This showcase clearly indicates that the talented Shawn Lane knows his musical ropes. (Joe Ross, staff writer, Bluegrass Now)
