5 out of 5 stars Classic Everly - A Must for all their Fans.......2007-02-18

Treat yourself to the sweet harmonies of the Everly Brothers, with a CD that has been remastered to underscore their pure sound. Played this for my musician son in law who was not familiar with their music and he is so impressed. All the hits are here, sounding better than ever. An outstanding addition to your collection --

5 out of 5 stars The BEST Everly Brothers album you will ever need, .......2007-01-10

Long ago in californialand, i heard the last everly brothers "hit", on the wings of a nightingale, 1 time and i knew I HAD to have it. Took me about 20 years to find it, in this album. If you really like good music, with tight harmonies, good guitar work, words you can understand, a little bit of country and early rock to the still bitchin, fresh, updated sound of nightingale, then STOP RIGHT HERE and get this album. Enough said!

5 out of 5 stars Everly Brothers, best of.......2007-01-09

The Millennium collection seems to have the songs I always want from a group or artist. The quality of the sound is there everytime. As the local music stores disappear it is good to be able to trust a system like this as I replace much of my vinyl for a CD collection. This CD gives me what I want for the Everly Brothers in one purchase.

5 out of 5 stars The Best.......2004-04-01

Any fan who appreciates the Everly Brothers has to have
this album. The remastered sound is superb of course, but
the deciding factor on this one should be the inclusion
of their last hit, after more than 20 years had passed since
their previous one.
After the team reunited, one of their biggest fans wrote
a song especially for them. Paul McCartney wrote "Wings of
a Nightingale" for them, and it is a truly beautiful song
that displays their harmony at its best, and the song is
not usually found on other collections.
Get the best of all their classic early hits, plus this
last hit.
A must have for any fan.

Amazon.com essential recording

The great irony of the Louvin Brothers, today considered by many the best of the brother duos, is that they peaked at a time when the form was almost dead. Their vocal sound was as old as the Alabama hills, and they kept alive such archaic tunes as "Knoxville Girl" and "In the Pines." Yet their studio bands were up to date, if not exactly Nashville Sound knockoffs, and much of their material, including "You're Running Wild," was fairly contemporary. Traditionalists or modernists? When it's this good, who cares? And besides, who's going to argue with guys who knew Sin the way Charlie and Ira Louvin knew Sin? --John Morthland

5 out of 5 stars When I Stop Dreaming, Best of the Louvin Brothers.......2007-07-09

I saw Charlie Louvin in concert recently in San Diego. Very few in the crowd had heard him live before but all knew his reputation. He did not disapoint and made a room full of new hardcore fans. He and his late brother recorded some wonderful songs that will be evergreen much like the work of Hank Williams. When you look back at the great Brothers acts like the Stanleys, Jim and Jesse and the Delmore Brothers you know the Louvin Brothers belong on top of that elite group. Their harmony work was the best. You won't hear this great stuff on the radio anymore as Nashville has long ago turned it's back on it's roots. You gotta go dig up the really good stuff by yourself. This record is a good place to start.

5 out of 5 stars THE BEST OF THE LOUVIN BROTHERS: A Review.......2007-07-03

This is a must own CD for lovers of traditional and blue grass influenced country music. The tight harmonies, beautiful melodies, and poignant stories are a real treat to listen to and enjoy.

You won't hear better country than "I Don't Believe You've Met My Baby", "You're Running Wild", "My Baby's Gone", and the title song, "When I Stop Dreaming".

5 out of 5 stars Indispensable for Serious C & W Collectors.......2007-03-04

Like all great musicians--whatever the music--the Louvin Brothers had a sound all their own: often imitated, never equalled. A basic album for listeners who love country and want a fuller sense of where it all began.

5 out of 5 stars A good starter album from the Louvin Brothers.......2006-06-30

I read the book, "Country Conversations" by Timothy Edward Jones initially for his interview with John McCrea of Cake, who happens to be a big fan of the the Louvin Brothers since childhood. Indeed, he got Charlie Louvin to play all 16 dates on Cake's 2003 Unlimited Sunshine Tour along with Cheap Trick, the Detroit Cobras, and the Hackensaw Boys who was the backing band for Charlie Louvin.
In the 2 pg. interview with McCrea, he stated his favorite Louvin songs were "You're Learning" (an Every Brothers sound-alike) and "the Great Atomic Power", the better of the two and both on this album. Definitely a good primer of the Louvin's music!
ps--As much McCrea in that interview stated that "Louvin Brothers' covers make me nauseous," "The Great Atomic Power" deserves a makeover (a faster tempo & a fuller musical accompaniment sung by a female duo; myself as one of that duo)--
John McCrea, you have been warned!

5 out of 5 stars Brilliant harmonizing.......2005-12-14

The best of the best of The Louvins, but ignore Amazon's track listing - see P.D.Harris' review for all the tracks included.
A must-have collection unless you want to invest in the multi-disc box.

5 out of 5 stars The Perfect Summary of Avalon's First Seven Years..........2007-05-04

"Christian music will never be the same..."
That sentence has probably been said by a lot of people regarding the arrival of one of Christian music's biggest phenomenons: AVALON. The vocal quartet, known for their smooth harmonies, has received:

Twenty-five Dove Award Nominations
Three Dove Awards
Three GRAMMY nominations
An American Music Award
Two RIAA-certified Gold albums
Over 3.5 million albums sold
Twenty #1 hit singles (Sixteen of which are featured on this album)
Several television appearances
and more.

Although Avalon has been lavished with success throughout the past 12 years, they are definitely familiar with sorrow and misfortune. (They've had more success than misfortune!) They've had several member changes, as Nikki Hassman-Anders, Cherie Adams, and Michael Passons have all left the group. That's not including Jody McBrayer, who just recently announced that he will be leaving the group as well in January of 2008 due to heart disease.

However, seven years after they began, Avalon released in 2003 "Testify To Love: The Very Best of Avalon" a collection of sixteen of their #1 hits. Smashes include:

"Give It Up" - the first we heard from Avalon
"Testify To Love" - the longest running #1 song of the 1990s
"Adonai" - 1998 Dove Award (Most Inspirational Recorded Song)
"The Glory" - huge #1 hit
"Wonder Why" - another #1

Also includes a special bonus cut from their Christmas record, the spine-tingling "Don't Save It All For Christmas Day" (also done by Celine Dion).

Overall, this collection of songs summarizes the first seven years of AVALON...however, don't stop there!!

5 out of 5 stars AMAZING COLLECTION by BJ.......2007-03-03

This collection ROCKS!! Avalon is definitely my favorite group of all time! "New Day", a new recording, is extrememly catchy and one of Avalon's best. I really loved this one. "Everything To Me", another new recording, features Michael and Melissa with their amazing and powerful voices. "Pray" is fast and catchy with Jody's special vocal talent along with Melissa. Of course I loved all the huge #1 hits like: "Wonder Why", "Give It Up", "Testify To Love", "Can't Live A Day", "In Not Of" and "I Don't Want To Go" and MORE! I liked the bonus track, "Don't Save It All For Christmas Day", too. I would definitely recommend this CD to everyone! LOVE YOU AVALON!!!!!!!

5 out of 5 stars AWESOME! .......2006-06-19

THIS IS ONE OF THOSE CD'S THAT I JUST CAN'T LIVE A DAY WITHOUT LISTENING TO! AVALON HAS BEEN AROUND FOR A LONG TIME AND MANY OF THESE SONGS I KNEW, BUT DIDN'T REALIZE IT WAS THEM SINGING IT UNTIL I PURCHASED THE CD. I WILL NEVER REGRET THIS PURCHASE!
MY FAVORITE TRACK IS #4 "EVERYTHING TO ME", ESPECIALLY SINCE THIS IS WHAT MY LORD IS TO ME!

4 out of 5 stars Good Sound, Very Good Lyrics.......2006-04-23

This is a strong collection of songs by Avalon. Although I've heard several of these songs, I have never had an Avalon CD before. I have been quite pleased with this group of songs.

The songs have solid Christian lyrics. The sound is a lighter pop sound. It is very upbeat and some of the songs are pretty catchy.

Some of the one that I particularly like are as follows: 'Everything To Me', 'Testify To Love', 'Adonai', 'Always Have, Always Will', and 'The Glory'.

This is definitely worth a listen.

5 out of 5 stars Great Cd.......2005-10-23

This is just an awesome cd and anybody into christian music would love it. New Day and Testify to Love are my favorite songs on this cd.

4 out of 5 stars Nice introduction to Jefferson--but sound quality a problem.......2007-06-05

This album deserves a 4 or 5 for its introduction of Blind Lemon Jefferson; it warrants a 2 for the sound quality (although one cannot blame the engineers at Yazoo records; they have done fine work on other albums with less than stellar recording quality). As the "liner notes" say, "Sound problems on old 78s are always a problem, but with Blind Lemon Jefferson things are worse than usual." The "liner notes" begin with the flat out statement that "Were one to begin a list of the most important artists in blues history, Blind Lemon Jefferson's name would spring instantly to mind."

While I appreciated the artistry of Jefferson, I must confess that I had a hard time making out the words of his songs. Some illustrative cuts:

"Easy Rider Blues" features nice guitar work and a good blues voice. The recording "noise" is a problem on this cut.

"One Dime Blues" features a nice line: "I'm broke and I ain't got a dime." Jefferson displays a nice blues voice and he plays his guitar well. He mentions Jesse James (bringing to mind one of John Lee Hooker's greatest songs).

"Corinna Blues" begins with very nice guitar work. He mentions "C. C. Rider" in the song (one of Mississippi John Hurt's characters). One tag line: "I raise my hand and I cry."

"Very Lonesome Blues" begins with an excellent guitar introduction. The vocal effects are very nice, although I have a hard time making out the words. Just so with one of his signature pieces, "See That My Grave Is Kept Clean."

This serves as a good introduction to the corpus of Blind Lemon Jefferson. The sound quality is exasperating, but that is beyond the control of the recording company that released this CD. Despite that, this CD is worth considering for its depiction of some key works in the portfolio of an early blues' great.

5 out of 5 stars The best sound ever for a music icon! .......2007-01-04

If you are not familiar with Blind Lemon, please don't assume this is some Cheech and Chong character. Jefferson was the first true male blues artist recorded in 1926 by Paramount. Up til that time, only female blues artists were on the market (Bessie Smith, Ida Cox, Clara Smith). Blind Lemon opened the doors for other artists to be recorded, like Tommie Johnson, Skip James, Blind Willie McTell and ultimately Robert Johnson. His recordings were extremely popular and sold all over the south and even north, just like Bessie Smith. Unfortunately, these recordings were always somewhat scratchy and unlistenable, unless you were a folk or blues historian. Yazoo has done an excellent job of cleaning up these recordings with more prescence and overall cleaner sound. Of course, it's not going to sound like 2007, but condiering Paramount's reputation for lousy sound, these are a revelation. Jefferson is a seminal name in American music, along with Louis Armstrong, Elvis, Gershwin and Bob Dylan. The fact that he made true blues records marketable, opened up the door for all other blues artists. This is a must for any folk, blues, or music history collection. He was an excelleny singer and a fantastic guitarist, utilizing odd meters and tricks. He was not a linear guitarist and did not always follow the rhythm. His reputation, I understand dates back to the streets of Dallas as far back as 1905 to 1910, so his birthdate of 1880, seems more likely and most of these songs he recorded in 1926, he had played for about 20 years. A true historical document with great sound!

5 out of 5 stars This guy deserves to be heard.......2004-06-08

It's not surprising that Blind Lemon was the most popular bluesman of his era for when you have the pleasure of hearing him for the first time you are subconsciously captivated by a voice which is obviously blessed with such rare subtle harmony that it can only be desribed as other worldly.
In fact other worldy is probably how I would describe this music as although it often follows rythmic patterns of conventional country blues, Lemon adds his own quirky notes which embellish the fingerpicking basslines and his greatest asset - his voice and the end result, although defined as blues, falls outside the traditional blues canon.
I highly recommend this CD as an overview of his work. The first time I heard Lemon was on a blues compilation CD featuring his great hit Matchbox Blues, and while that hooked me instantly I could tell that in this compilation the tracks had been remastered to a higher standard.
Be aware that there will be hiss on any Blind Lemon recording, this music goes back to the 1920's afer all, a fact which makes these timeless melodies all the more astonishing.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent overview.......2004-04-04

Taking the place of Yazoo's previous compilation, 1985's "King Of The Country Blues", this fine collection of Blind Lemon Jefferson's prewar singles is just about the best on the market (unless you want to spring for JSP's superb four-disc boxset "The Complete 94 Classic Sides").

The earliest of these 23 very well-chosen cuts are some of the first electrically recorded songs, and there is generally quite a lot of surface noise present, but that is the case with every available Blind Lemon-compilation, and this one is certainly one of the better sounding, along with Catfish's equally excellent Blind Lemon-CD "Squeeze My Lemon".
Lemon Jefferson was one of the pivotal figures of early 20th century blues, and one of the most important and influential bluesmen ever to come out of Texas...an intricate guitar player and a fine songwriter whose best songs ("Match Box Blues", "See That My Grave Is Kept Clean", the eerie "'Lectric Chair Blues") are all part of the fabric of the blues.
Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars One of The Original Bluesmen.......2003-12-05

Along with men like Frank Stokes, Charley Patton, Furry Lewis, Mississippi John Hurt and Cryin' Sam Collins, Blind Lemon Jefferson was one of the original bluesmen. Although it's commonly thought that he was born in 1897, more recent research has suggested that he was born in 1893. During the years of his adolescence, the blues was first beginning to take shape. Songs like "Black Horse Blues," "See That My Grave Is Kept Clean," "Matchbox Blues," "Corinna Blues," and "Rabbit Foot Blues" are all absolutely essential to anyone's blues collection, or to their general understanding of American music. Jefferson's strange and unconventional vocals controlled and dictated what he played on guitar. His guitar playing was highly influenced by the Flamenco playing of Mexican workers whom he lived near during his life. His lyrics are bright, original, often sarcastic and humorous, and great poetry. Unfortunately, both this disc and a Yazoo Blind Blake disc that I have, often skip when I play them. Better luck to others who purchase this Jefferson disc!

I learned about Reverend Gary Davis's music by listening to a Hot Tuna concert DVD. Jorma and Jack mentioned him in their interviews. I quickly found this cd at Amazon.com and enjoyed hearing the real thing from the reverend in a very good recording.

5 out of 5 stars Great introduction to the man's work.......2003-09-30

My local record store was doing a promotion on this series, so I took a chance on this collection, and I'm glad I did. I'm pretty familiar with Chicago electric blues, as typified by Chess Records, but I've been wanting to go beyond that. This collection of Rev. Gary Davis's work is really strong, and the notes indidate the original label each track was taken from, making it easy to follow up and get additional CDs by him. I went back the next day and got all the rest of the CDs in the series, and I will report back when I have had a chance to absorb them.

3 out of 5 stars Good intro, but.......2005-08-24

The first 5 songs are top 10 hits +, but after that I went to fast forward.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome.......2003-09-12

My parents listen to these good old boys and I grew up listening to them and my children are now listening to them. I went to a concert at the Ross Ragland in Klamath Falls,Or and I loved the bass he is so low you can feel it in your seat. All are cute too! Great albums

2 out of 5 stars Elvira is cut short!!!!!!!!!!.......2002-07-25

The very end of the song where Richard hits the "bottom of the barrel" with his amazing vocal chords...is totally cut out! What a scam! I used to listen to this song as a kid and I feel I've been betrayed!!

4 out of 5 stars MCA gets cheap?.......2002-04-28

The Oak Ridge Boys deserve to have at least one Millenium Collection released (if not more), but should it be done to accomodate MCA's increasingly cheap approach to older artists?

This collection would not be quite to bad if MCA hadn't released "The Oak Ridge Boys COLLECTION" nearly 10 years earlier. At least that package got original artwork and liner notes. When it became inevitable that the Oaks needed a Millenium Collection, what did MCA do? They simply pulled the 1992 "Collection" off the market (which had been certified Gold not too long before), slapped an old album photo on it (the original cover for "American Made," to be exact), and ever so slightly edited the track list. The result: a POOR excuse for a new release. All but one of the songs on this release appeared on the '92 collection ("Bobbie Sue," conspicuously absent from the prior release, and "Make My Life With You" are the only additions). Amazing, two of the Oaks' biggest hits, "Y'all Come Back Saloon" and "Thank God For Kids" were cut altogether (I guess to save even more money).

Even the liner notes are nearly identical to the '92 release. I see no reason for this total lack of concern for a top-notch group such as the Oaks. Since they have so many more hits, perhaps MCA will consider doing a Volume Two Millenium release (with a NEW cover photo and DIFFERENT song line-up!!)

4 out of 5 stars Not just for country music lovers!.......2001-05-13

One listen to "The Best Of The Oak Ridge Boys - The Millennium Collection" will have you immediately hooked on the material, even if you aren't a fan of country music. What endeared many a fan to this legendary quartet is their unique brand of interwoven, finely homogenized blend of vocalization. Perhaps you could call the Oaks' the "Mamas and the Papas" or the "Three Dog Night" of country music. In this collection, you get eleven of their best known country tunes, plus the Oaks one and only crossover country-pop smash "Elvira", which features Richard Sterban's trademark bass vocals. I couldn't sing that low if my life depended on it! The saxophone playing in "Bobbie Sue" is reminiscent of The Coasters "Charlie Brown", which gives this track a jazzy-bluesy sort of quality. My favorite tracks in this collection would have to be "I Wish You Could Have Turned My Head (And Left My Heart Alone)", "American Made" (which was later revamped and used in a popular beer commercial), "Trying To Love Two Women", "Fancy Free" and "Make My Life With You". The other tracks featured in this greatest hits collection are worth the money as well, so you'll derive great listening pleasure, as well as get more than what you pay for with this one of a kind body of work from one of country music's biggest legends. This could be a five star review, had MCA included the Oaks' two most endearing favorites "Thank God For Kids" and "Everyday", but MCA sort of dropped the ball on this one. Although The Oak Ridge Boys have enjoyed a rather fruitful career over the years, perhaps their most notorious act was when Joe Bonsall, Duane Allen and Richard Sterban dismissed fellow longtime member William Lee Golden in the mid-'80's for refusing to shave off his trademark shepherd-like, salt and pepper beard. C'mon guys, that's like asking Alex Trebek to do away with his "flavor saver", or even asking Kenny Rogers to shave off all his facial hair! The group then replaced Golden with a dark haired guy with no facial hair, who, in photographs looked so out of place in this band. By the time the '90's rolled around, Golden was later back with The Oak Ridge Boys, but the group failed to recapture their late '70's/early '80's chart success. This Millennium Collection CD belongs in every country music/Oaks' fan's, and in some cases, pop music fan's CD library. You better not wait too long, because "The Best Of The Oak Ridge Boys - The Millennium Collection" might not be around for the next millennium! As they say down South, "Ya better git while the gittin's good!" In English, that means "Order yours today (while supplies last)!"

5 out of 5 stars The Best of Paul Overstreet.......2007-01-04

Paul Overstreet is best known for his prolific song writing of C&W music but this CD also demonstrates his terrific ability as a singer as well.

5 out of 5 stars One Incredible Voice.......2006-08-06

Paul Overstreet has one incredible voice. A voice that is very smooth and you can understand what he is singing. This is one of my favorite CD's by any artist because he sings about everyday life. My favorite song on this CD is Seeing My Father In Me. I definitely can relate to that song because I can see my dad in myself. This is a CD that any country music fan should have in their collection.

5 out of 5 stars Soothes My Soul.......2003-07-11

You know! it's nice to find a CD that is so easy and pleasurable to listen to. Paul achieves this by his beautiful collection of songs. This is a CD to put on, ensure you're not disturbed, sit back and let the lyrics and music take over.If you are a father and listening to "Seeing my Father in me " does not touch you, then you are not human!

5 out of 5 stars The best of Paul Overstreet and Love is Strong, Paul Overst.......2002-06-25

I surely do agree with the person who said that Paul Overstreet does not get enough acclaim for his work. He needs more exposure so that more people will know of his wonderful talent and recoginize his name, knowing that when they hear the name Paul Overstreet on an album that they will NOT be disappionted in what they get. They will know that they will get true country with the warmest regards, but more than this they will be spiritually uplifted, and brought closer to God. Would like some vidios/DVD's also. Go Paul, you have a God given talent, use it, do it for Jesus! but always remain humble and give all the glory to God, who gave you your wonderful talent. Don't ever let fame lead you in the wrong direction. Let's hear more of Paul Overstreet!!! Yeah! God Bless your Ministry, HannahJane in CA

4 out of 5 stars Good for starters.......2007-04-29

There is really no better way to start off your Rambo collection than with this CD. My personal favorites are "Tears Will Never Stain The Streets Of That City" and "We Shall Behold Him". Dottie Rambo is in her own league when it comes to writing gospel music, the same goes for Ronny Hinson, Gerald Crabb, and Carson Howard.

This CD really makes a person wish that The Singing Rambos were still together. In my mind, they are one of the greatest southern gospel groups to ever step foot on stage. Give this CD a listen, and you will be introduced to some great vintage gospel.

5 out of 5 stars The Best.......2006-11-10

Finding it quite hard to find this kind of music in S.A it was really suprising how easy it was to buy this product and how soon it arrived from the states

5 out of 5 stars When Choosing 'The Rambos' You Can Not Go Wrong.......2006-03-03

Trio or not. Each member of the that family is a HUGE talent in their own right. Their music is SO well written, and annointed. My absolute favorite, is the towering gospel hit 'Tears Will Never Stain The Streets Of That City' from 1976. It was in the TOP 5 CHRISTIAN SONGS FOR 1976, some sources indicate it AS the #1 gospel song in 1976. I tend to agree. But, it does not stop there. All of their songs are absolutely AWESOME. I personally wish the album 'There Has To Be A Song' billed as 'The Soul Singing Rambos' were out on Cd. May I tell you? It touched my heart & soul! It is a masterpeice by ANYONE'S standards. Christian music just DOES NOT get better than this! Now, THAT last statement friends, is MY opinion........ the rest...... FACT.

5 out of 5 stars Gospel Classic.......2004-12-12

Dottie Rambo is the queen of gospel. Her songwriting is in a class by itself. The trio mentioned in the previous review is Dottie's husband and daughter and a very important part of Dottie and her music.

5 out of 5 stars Dottie Rambo is Queen.......2004-02-06

Dottie is the queen of song writers. I only have one complaint about this cd. The complaint is that is a trio group and not Dottie alone.
