This intriguing artifact finds Rose Maddox, one of the matriarchs of the Bakersfield sound, exploring unfamiliar territory. As a honky-tonk singer, she was apt to sink her teeth into a phrase and worry it about a bit before digesting. Bluegrass demands that you chew up a verse and spit it out. Maddox fronting a group led, at times, by Bill Monroe is a little like having Lightnin' Hopkins play guitar in one of Dizzy Gillespie's combos. Of course, such an arrangement implies at the very least that no one is just going through the motions, and the results for Maddox are never less than interesting. --Steven Stolder

Album Description
Soon after Bobby returned to RCA in 1972, he recorded an entire LP of songs by the legendary songwriter, cartoonist and humorist Shel Silverstein. The album yielded three hits, Daddy What If, Marie Laveau (Bobby's first ever #1 hit) and The Winner. Ten other songs feature Silverstein's weird and often ironic twist on the country song. This is regarded by many as Bobby's best-ever album!

Bobby Bare hits a homer!.......2002-10-16
This was the first album I ever bought, at the age of 12, with some money I had saved by mowning lawns. I listened to it for years until I wore the vinyl record out. "The Winner" and "Marie Leveaux" could be heard on the radio at the time but the real beauty of the album, I think, is the seldom-heard "Roaslie's Good Eats Cafe" and "In the Hills of Shiloh." Today, my wife uses "Rosalie's" to teach her 12th grade English students about descriptive writing. My two boys and I giggle at the "Mermaid", "Paul", "Sure Hit Songwriters Pen", and all the other great ones. Thanks Bobby & Shel for this artistic collaboration -- and for thirty years (and counting) of enjoyment.
An artists artist........2002-03-11
Many of these reviews are good but also erroneous. This is probably the best theme album of all time in any genre. But it was NOT the first theme album in country music. That distinction belongs to Johnny Cash in the early sixties. To appreciate ones music one does not have to denegrate someone elses music or contribution, or to have novice listeners make silly statements without them having the scope to be in the know. Johnny Cash says Bare is his favorite, he also was known as Jennings favorite. He also should be given more credit for the sweeping changes in the artist as being in control of their music.Far before Waylon and Willie , Bare learned from Cash how to rule his music from Nashville producers. Listen and enjoy . They are all favorites - but the last The Winner is a classic!!!!!!!!!!!!! Of any genre. Thanks Mr. Bare for your lifes music. Brad Stender.
not sure if it is the right song.......2002-03-01
I dont know about any review I want to be able to listen to the song befor I rate it Im not realy sure if that is the right song im thinking about if you or some one can tell me where i can listen to the song to see if it is realy the song that i am looking for
I'm Home!!!.......2001-07-24
I think of home when I hear "Daddy what if?" Man, it realy brings me back to my childhood. My Dad and I used to sing this to each other. My Dad is a drunk now. He is a "True Alcoholic" But he and I used to sing this to each other when I was little. I am 29 now. I hope anyone who listens to this will think of us and your own babies, when you hear this song. It is realy wonderful and I am glad that I have finally found it on Amazon.com. Love always with my daddy,..... Tricia

Great Balls Of Fire.......2002-12-06
I Highly reccomend this CD. I like to hear Jerry Lee sing ballads and on this Cd he sings his best.He is in a catagory all by himself. Buy this one if you are a fan, you won't be sorry.
Nobody does it better.......2002-09-07
A lot of country stars used to sing "covers" of songs originally performed by others, and the results were usually not as good. Here, Jerry Lee Lewis sings a lot of old "standards" which technically are "covers" but with his unique vocal style and piano playing, it winds up being a new creation well worthy of attention. I originally bought both LP records containing the music on this CD, and they are two of my most treasured records of Jerry Lee's country period, which I think is his best genre. It is nice to have the CD so I can retire them from active playing. If you like the old standards, you will like the way Jerry Lee does them, I'm sure. I think he has more musical talent than any other performer of his generation and could have been greater than Elvis had he not made a few PR mistakes or if Elvis had not been so sexy looking to the women. But then again, he wouldn't have been Jerry Lee Lewis, the Icon. If folks would have only judged him on his music!

Key word is "sings".......2003-06-18
Tony Rice is an amazing guitar player and i love him for it but I always thought that I was a poser for loving him more for his voice. Most people praise his playing first and foremost and i usually skip over albums of his that have no vocals. Well if you are like me and have embraced his fantastic voice then buy this album. Tony sings on every song, there are no flatpicking jams on it and most of the songs will bring tears to your eyes. This is a beutiful album whether you like G.Lightfoot or have never head his music. (P.S. he has Fantastic lyrics)
Great bluegrass-folk crossover.......2002-07-11
A bluegrass-ballads tribute to songwriter Gordon Lightfoot. Sounds scary, doesn't it? But superpicker Tony Rice has been slipping these songs onto his albums for years, and this collection is excellent -- he has a real feel for Lightfoot's style. Worth checking out!
Heartfelt Brilliance.......2002-05-02
Not only is Tony at his peak in many of these songs, but the musician line-up reads as a who's who of bluegrass. Ricky Skaggs, The Rice Brothers, JD Crowe, Jerry Douglass (of course), David Grisman, and more! So needless to say, there is some [kicking] music going on here.
But what is truly magical about this album is Tony's unabashed love for Gordon Lightfoot. Every word is heartfelt, every note holds an emotion. And this man can sing! And although the album is a collection of songs from his entire career, it holds together as a single unit well - a concept album with a twist. And while Tony's voice, guitar and overall talent are the shine on the album, Lightfoot's lyrics are its depth. Lightfoot sure knows how to write a song. And Tony knows how to perform them.
There's not a weak link in the chain, but keep an ear out for "Early Morning Rain", "Whispers of the North", and "Walls".
Tony Rice-Gordon Lightfoot who could be better.......2001-06-03
I have enjoyed listening to Gordon Lightfoot for decades and this tribute is the best I've heard. Who could do a better job than Tony Rice. Excellant vocals and guitar. Whispers of the North, Home from the Forest,16 Miles, Song for a Winters Night what a great selection of songs.
Virtuoso..........2000-12-20
A friend of mine turned me on to Tony Rice with this CD. Before then, I didnt really consider myself a bluegrass fan (or a Gordon Lightfoot fan either) - just a fan of great guitar playing. Well, after hearing the first solo in the first song on the album and I was blown away - proving to me to always try and keep an open mind to new things. And after extended listenings, it is one of my favorite CDs. Rice is a virtuoso - these songs are filled with extremely expressive and creative playing...fluid yet restrained. It's fairly obvious that Rice could really let it rip if he wanted, but the fact that he holds back and finds just the right notes is somehow even more impressive. Lightfoot's naturally eloquent and simple lyrics provide a great framework for Rice's unique interpretations, while acknowledging the author's inspiration in the album title. Favorites include: "Go My Way," "Bitter Green," "Early Morning Rain," "Sixteen Miles," and "Whisper My Name." Don't be fooled by the benign title, this is a great CD by an excellent musician.

Doc Watson is one of America's national treasures, a man whose music, despite his global fame, remains rooted in the traditional sounds of the Appalachian Mountains, where he lives. A folk and bluegrass legend--especially for his precise and eloquent flat-pick guitar playing--Watson displays a nearly palpable charm and low-key sense of humor in performance, which is no where better than on his children's album, which was recorded live in 1990 at a concert for kids in Atlanta. With the intimacy of a living-room gathering, this set of traditional folk songs, kids' classics, and Watson signature tunes both delights and enthralls. The harmonica on "Mama Blues" sounds all the world like a crying infant and the picking is so hot on "John Henry" that surely it, too, could forge steel. And when Watson and touring companion Jack Lawrence tickle the lyric of "Mole in the Ground" with their guitar filigree, youngsters big and small will find it hard not to squeal out loud. --Alanna Nash

This cd is perfect for kids! I grew up listening to this tape and at 22 I still know all the words by heart! Sing Song Kitty was my favorite song.

My husband and I purchased this cd for our new granddaughter. We believe that Doc Watson is a National Treasure, and are proud that he resides in North Carolina where we have multiple opportunities to see/hear him play. The songs are a little faster paced on this cd. "Tennessee Stud" is our favorite, and we're sure that Hannah will know all the words by the time she's able to talk!
Wonderful!.......2000-12-14
This is one of my very favorite collection of kids songs! My two children love it dearly. It is listened to and sung along with nearly every day. I highly advise to anyone with or without kids!

My son goes to sleep with this album at least 3 nights a week. It goes on car trips with us and is one of the few that you don't want to throw out the window after 50 miles. It contains many wonderful folk songs that kids and adults love to sing along with.

The legendary bluegrass guitarist returns to his roots with Tony Rice Plays and Sings Bluegrass. Helping him play and sing are such old pals as Douglas, Vassar Clements, the Seldom Scene's Mike Auldridge and John Duffey, the Country Gentlemen's Bill Emerson and Jimmy Gaudreau, and the New Grass Revival's Sam Bush. The album is at once a tribute to the early bluegrass that so inspired Rice, and a reflection of the changes Rice helped bring to bluegrass. On the traditional songs associated with Bill Monroe, Flatt & Scruggs, the Stanley Brothers, Jimmy Martin, and Hylo Brown, Rice sounds right at home pushing those insistent rhythms along and leading those note-bending vocal harmonies. Several other songs, including Bob Dylan's "Girl from the North Country" and Tom Rush's "Galveston Flood," were introduced to the bluegrass repertoire by the Country Gentlemen, and Rice uses them to illustrate the changes that shook bluegrass in the '70s: a more personal, conversational vocal style, a broader harmonic palette, and an increased prominence for guitar leads. No one has mastered those changes while preserving the essence of bluegrass better than Rice. He has always included several bluegrass tunes on each outing, but it's a treat to hear a whole album of nothing but. --Geoffrey Himes
Customer Reviews:
"The Master" cuts loose one more time..........2004-10-30
No one has been more influential in performance of acoustic guitar than Tony Rice.
Nobody.
Rice is a master of just about every genre that his Martin Herringbone D-28 could be applied to. Along with David Grisman he pretty much founded American String Jazz. Certainly those Rice/Grisman bands were strongly modeled after Stephane Grapelli and Django Reinhardt's Quintette Du Hot Club de France, but NOBODY in America (or really the entire world) was making music like theirs when they recorded the iconic "David Grisman Quintette" album.
Tony also payed his country dues - in what was probably the "hottest" country band in history. Emmylou Harris's bands are called "The Hot Band" and it was NEVER hotter than the version that included Tony on his acoustic trading licks with electric wizard Albert Lee and Dobro master Jerry Douglas. If I had to take a single country album to a deserted island it would have to be Emmylou's "Roses in the Snow".(It's worth mentioning that the same band also featured Ricky Skaggs on every instrument he could get his talented hands on - mainly fiddle and mandolin.)
Tony has also demonstrated that he has a fine touch with acoustic-based pop, with multiple covers of the likes of Bob Dylan and Gordon Lightfoot. (There's a whole collection of Rice doing just Lightfoot covers that is absolutely smashing!)
ALL of the above was written just to give some context before saying that the genre I consider Tony's "home" is Bluegrass, and for about 20 years beginning in the early seventies pretty much EVERY landmark Bluegrass recording featured Tony's blistering guitar and his urgent soulful vocals.
To all our sorrows Tony's voice has succumbed to multiple vocal-chord polyps, leaving him sounding like a late edition Miles Davis.
THIS album was that last great recording of Rice's fine singing, and it is fitting that he used the voice he had left to record this fine collection of Bluegrass and Newgrass tunes. The old 'bone never sounded better and from his opening ear-stretching bend on his solo to "I've Waited As Long As I Can" you can hear that "the master" is in full control of the most influential flatpicking technique of Bluegrass history.
Tony is joined by a collection of old buddies - meaning Bluegrass Superstars - and they bear down on 13 gold-plated-bluegrass-gems. I could go to the trouble of reciting a review of every tune on the disc, but the truth is there are no "duds".
Enjoy.
A classic bluegrass recording.......2003-06-16
Tony Rice is sometimes criticised by "purists" for not sticking to pure bluegrass, and branching off into contemporary and jazz music, even employing piano and drums at times. But, Tony has always maintained a steady stream of pure bluegrass recordings through the years, along with the other. Several of them have become absolute bluegrass classics. "Cold on the Shoulder", "Manzanita", "Skaggs and Rice", "Guitar", "California Autumn" and of course all of the "Bluegrass Album Band" volumes are essentially Tony Rice recordings. This album is an essential recording. No piano or drums here! The songs are great, the musicians Tony has selected are among the best in the world at this type of music, Tony's voice at this point was still in prime condition, and of course his playing here is classic "Rice" flatpicking. This is a "must have" recording in any serious bluegrass collection.
Bound for movin' on?.......2001-07-26
Don't get me wrong. I'm a fan of Tony Rice, and have been for years. And listening to his albums has turned me on to a group of musicians that form the core of my folk-roots listening: Jerry Douglas as David Grisman being the shining stars. When I latch on to a musician, I expect him/her to lead me down their musical path. Take me with them on their musican growth. While an awesome guitar player and a darn good vocalist, Tony Rice's path has been, for me, a big circle. In this album we find him rehashing some old Ian and Sylvia, for instance, and bringing nothing new to the table. Nothing that sounds different from what he did 15 years ago. Come on, Tony! You're one of the greatest guitar players who ever lived. Let's move on!. I vote for the late-80s Native American as the pinnacle.
great.......1998-07-10
If you are a bluegrass fan, this is a must for your collection. Tony Rice is a supreme guitarist who also knows what it takes to produce a great sounding song. I have several of his CDs and tapes and throughly enjoy each one. If you love guitar music and other stringed music, then get this album.

A professional interprets a master storyteller.......2006-08-27
Simply put, Campbell interprets the pure emotion and sensitivity of Webb's words and music. I have seen Jimmy several time in New York over the last few (10 or 12) years and he always pays homage to Campbell in some way at those events. Listening to the tunes on this CD allows the listener to understand his respect for Campbell. I think Jimmy must have written many of these songs knowing that Campbell would interpret them just the way Jimmy intended for them to be sung.
Old fans will enjoy hearing Campbell sing more than just the commercial "Galveston" and "Wichita Lineman". Fresh listeners will immediatley appreciate both Jimmy and Glen, and can't help but being new converts.
Terrific listening on every track particularly on " Still within the sound of my voice."

Obviously Fiertag the critic overlooked the facts.......2002-12-13
This was recorded in 1975. Mac Wisemans whiskey tenor voice is legendary and this was a mutualy consented album when it was produced. CMH had plans of re-releasing this some time ago before the unfortunate news of Gordon's ailing health. If anyone knows anything about Mac Wiseman and likes first class first generation bluegrass artists then I highly recomend this wonderful reissue.

Don't pass this one up.......2007-06-07
Charlie Moore can only be described as the Anti-Carter. His and Carter Stanley's voice were very simmilar, right down to the use of one Bill Napier, inventor of the crosspick guitar style. Sadly this collection does not include any of those cuts, but if Starday ever re-releases the album called Moore & Napier you owe it to yourself to pick that one up as well.
It's hard to tell who the personell on this album are but most likely it's Butch Robbins on banjo and either Pee Wee Lambert or Charlie Klien on mandolin. No liner notes were included with my copy.
All the cuts listed here are worth listening to over and over, no matter what's missing. He covers everything from the straight-ahead sound to honky-tonk weepers to ballads and does it with style and panache. That he is but a footnote in the history of bluegrass is a shame.
