Editorial Reviews

It's entirely appropriate that the cover photo here--Merle Haggard seated in front of a fireplace and surrounded by the albums of his favorite country singer--bears more than a passing resemblance to Bob Dylan's Bringing It All Back Home. On Roots, Volume 1, Hag brings it home here by honoring some of his earliest influences, recording their songs in the swinging, stripped-down honky-tonk style popular during the middle of the 20th century. Merle covers Hank Thompson and Hank Williams, but he devotes the most time to Lefty Frizzell. Indeed, Merle sings classics like "Always Late" and "If You've Got the Money" in a voice brimming with Lefty's patented curlicued phrasing. What's more, he's signed up Frizzell's old lead guitarist, Norm Stephens, to reprise his most indelible licks. The highlights come, though, when Haggard sings his own songs, particularly "More Than My Old Guitar," where Merle not only insists he loves his wife more than his six string but more than "God loves the poor." --David Cantwell

Customer Reviews:
Great fun from the past........2007-04-30
I bought this EP when it came out in the 80's for many it was a surprize hit. The CD remaster is great. You can hear everything very clearly. Jeff Beck's guitar solo at the end of "rockin at midnight" is vibrant. On the Ep it was faded out. Just a warning, Robbie Blunt is only on the live version and, this is not his first collab' with Mr. Plant despite what it says above. Hey, who ever thought old stuff could sound relevent?

Album Description
This is the first of a multi-volume series where Brian will pay tribute to the music that influenced him, and in turn, made him one of the most influential musical figures of the last 25 years. Here are 23 amazing rockabilly songs (some hits, some obscure gems) that helped define an era. Setzer is determined to do whatever it takes to reach as many people as possible so they too can discover the music that has gone underappreciated for too long.

"Suprisingly Authentic Record From Neo-Billy Kingpin Setzer!".......2007-06-18
Who've thought that one of the most authentic rockabilly albums in recent years would come from the former STRAY CATS front man and neo-swing pioneer Brian Setzer? Not this DJ! Mr. Setzer has always been an accomplished and talented guitarist/singer, kind of like our "rockabilly ambassador" to the outside mainstream world, but in recent years you'd be hard pressed to find many of his songs on rockabilly playlists around our retro-rockin' scene. Not that any of his post-Cats material was pedestrian -far from that. It's just that his slick, effortless and oft-times `overproduced' studio sound seemed a bit out of sync with the more "traditional" sounds emanating from the modern rockabilly revival.
Now, I can't help but admit that I've dug the Stray Cats since day one -you might even say that they were an early, unseen hand nudging me towards this retro rockin' lifestyle. "Rockabilly Riot! Volume One: A Tribute To SUN Records" brings Brian full circle back to those early inspirations as he headed back to the hills -the Tennessee hills actually, to record a heartfelt, sparse and authentic paean to those artists and the songs of Sam Phillips little/big studio on Union Avenue in Memphis. Using just piano, sax and acoustic guitar (when necessary) to augment the traditional "SUN" rockabilly sound (electric guitar, standup bass and simple drums), Brian has not only created a near perfect rockabilly primer, but also a heartfelt testament to the quality and timeless brilliance of SUN Records. His commitment to the album's concept was even carried over to the equipment used: strictly vintage mics and reverb/echo created by an old 1800's era water cistern found behind the house! This is a superb record that you wouldn't mind handing to a stranger or friend who wants to know what all this "rockabilly" fuss was about.
Generous quantity of material here -23 tracks! Great selection of straightforward standards and brilliant obscure-o-billy nuggets: you can't have a SUN tribute without BILL RILEY'S "Red Hot" & "Flying Saucer Rock And Roll," CARL PERKINS "Blue Suede Shoes" or JOHNNY CASH's "Get Rhythm." But what makes this album really rev right are all the rarely heard numbers like ROY ORBISON's "Rockhouse," "JACK EARL's "Slow Down," JERRY LEE LEWIS's "Real Wild Child," DEAN BEARD's "Rakin' And Scrapin'"," KENNY PARCHMAN's unissued "Get It Off Your Mind," and TOMMY BLAKE's "Flatfoot Sam" -all performed with wild abandon and informed flair by some of the best musicians in Nashville.
STAND-OUT HOT ROD TUNE: Dig the rowdy rollin' and rockin' "Peroxide Blonde In A Hopped Up Model Ford," unissued '57 track by SUN alum "Jumpin'" GENE SIMMONS. One of the coolest hot rod tracks ever, finally completed & committed to tape with a powerful `jived up' overhaul. That's Mr. Simmons himself on backup vocals and heard muttering at the end: "Think about it, killer!"
"Rockabilly Riot!" has lots of comfortable SUN covers, but also plenty of powerful surprises hidden deep under the hood. This is the album we all knew that Mr. Setzer could make if he ever got back to his roots. Now let's see if he leaves them Hollywood hills to tour in support of this rockabilly gem...!

Education in Rockabilly.......2007-01-01
If you don't know what Rockabilly is or are just getting into it here, this is a great transition to hear Brian's versions of Classic songs that every Rockabilly player does.
**WARNING: This CD might make you search out and collect many obscure and unheard of artists in the Amazon Archives! May be hazardous to your financial health.**
I did not heed the warning and am happily collecting artists I'd never heard of.
"History of Rockabilly 101" little bit of a bore.......2006-05-24
Just like some classes, it sounds interesting and intriguing, but once you sign up it's not what you expected. So you suffer though the semester, endlessly kicking yourself for enrolling in a class that sounded good, but wasn't what you thought it would be.
It's not until well after you've graduated do you really appreciate the experience.
Riot seems a lot like that to me. The high level of detail in recreating some popular tunes of the 50's sounds initially interesting, but my first impression was one of disappointment. I was hoping Brian would kick it up a notch, add a little Ignition style fire into the recordings, but Mr. Setzer, like a school teacher had a certain agenda and he stuck with it. "That kind of style didn't exist in that erra," he would lecture the class.
I stick to my guns and really, really want Brian to make another over the top guitar record like Ignition, but at the same time, I have learned to appreciate this record for what it is. It is honestly a record that is unlike anything else in my collection.
I will probably begin to appreciate this record more as I grow older. For now, I never get tired of Brian's over the top mixture of jazz/blues/country/swing that has me dropping my jaw. I'm not interested in a tamer scaled down version...just yet. Maybe I will later.
So, whenever I feel like enrolling in Rockabilly school, I just pop this disc in.
A rockin' tribute .......2006-05-16
Rockabilly Riot, Vol. 1: A Tribute to Sun Records is a fantastic homage to some of the best American music ever recorded. Setzer's musicianship is top-notch; more proof that he's probably the best rockabilly (and swing) guitarist to ever live. His voice is golden, sounding much better than on some of his recent recordings of original material.
The album captures the energy and emotion of the Sun Records rockabilly classics, stays true to it, but improves on it with updated recording technology. The paradox is that the recordings are so clean, they lack a bit of the rawness of the 50's recordings.
Being a collection of covers, it has built-in limitations. When trying to pull something like this off, the artist is trapped between trying to bring something fresh to the material without straying too far from what made the songs great in the first place. Inject too much of yourself into someone else's song, and you're accused of heresy, betrayal. Introduce nothing new to the songs, and you're panned as boring and unoriginal. Setzer avoided the horns of that dilemma by revitalizing without ruining these classic songs.
Fans of the original Sun Records artists should be glad that the material is being re-introduced to the public in a very reverential way. Setzer fans should be pleased by the fire in his playing and singing. The songs are a lot of fun. Listening to this album reminded me of why early rock n' roll was so stirring, inspiring, energizing to that first generation of fans - something 50 years later we tend to take for granted.
Wow.......2006-05-12
Just "wow". Maybe "WOW".
Brian gathers a nice selection of rockabilly standards and covers them wonderfully. The Jordanaires join him on several songs, which really add to them. There isn't a song on here I don't like. I sense that Brian would have been perfectly content to have been around when rockabilly was being born.

Frank who???.......2007-04-17
One of the all time greats once again adds another classic to his historic resume of hits that span multiple genres. Late-1984 mega smash Sea Of Love, with its ethereal, sweeping strings encapsulated in the crisp, timeless production of the Fabulous Brill Brothers reminds you it's "Miller Time", that is after you safely, soberly activate your cerebral Delorean to 1.21 jigawatts at 88mph & travel back in time 30 years....only it'll be 30 years ago from 2015, as in "Back To The Future"(as it were).:)
The Honeydrippers Vol. 1.......2007-02-20
The music was as I expected, but the length of the CD was disappointing.
I felt it should be longer for the price paid. However, I do enjoy the music.
Smooth 5 stars are not enough for this one... .......2007-01-27
I remember the first time I heard this album back in 1984. I remember exactly where I was, what I was doing and who I was with... No other album has ever left that kind of impression on me... truly a one of a kind musical experience... I can still listen to it and it feels new every time... truly amazing... You gotta have it... trust me... You're gonna love it....
???????.......2007-01-07
If I remeber correctly ,Paul Shafer from David Lettermans band is involved in this record. Also worth mentioning is the fact that this was released as an EP which is why it is so short.
lonely summer nights.......2006-07-06
i bought the s cd with no expectations in any way shape or form. it was recomended to me by amazon.com and i looked at the price, decided it was cheep and i could affordit and orderd it the same day. i must admit i'm not a big led zeppilin fan, nor have i herd and of robert plants solo work. i did love this album, it's fathful to the originals. my only comeplaint is that this album is much to short and that the Honeydrippers only made one album. if i may i would like to recomend Brian Setzer's Guitar Slinger album.

With the Roots signing to Def Jam, their soon-to-be-old label Geffen has taken advantage by releasing a two volume anthology of the Roots' best songs from this perioid (1994 - 2004). Unlike other greatest hits compilations by artists who can't justify the hubris, the Roots catalog runs ocean deep and these two albums are able to pull from off-the-beaten-path album cuts ("Double Trouble"), rare remixes (Black Thought's "Distortion to Static" mix), live recordings ("It's Comin"), plus the occasional mega-hit ("You Got Me"). Even for hardcore Roots fans, they might yet be surprised by a few of the inclusions here, especially "Good Music," a song off The Roots' very first album, Organix, released independently before they signed to Geffen. Between the two volumes, #1 is far and away superior in terms of song selection. Volume 2 isn't nearly as strong but it has some interesting tidbits, including a live medley of "The Seed/Melting Pot/Web" from BBC's Radio One. --Oliver Wang
Album Description
Luckily, for those whose familiarity with the Philadelphia crew doesn't extend beyond watching them play with Jay-Z for his unforgettable Unplugged album or Eminem at the 2003 Grammys, Home Grown! The Beginners Guide To Understanding The Roots Volume One and Two, will provide the sonic DNA for the illustrious group. The comprehensive collections showcase everything from popular hits like the soulful "What They Do," to unreleased heat like "Quicksand Millennium" and "You Got Me," featuring Jill Scott (the Grammy winner featured Erykah Badu), to hard-to-find remixes of "Don't Say Nuthin'" to live performances like "Sacrifice (Live On BBC's Radio One's Worldwide Show with Giles Peterson)." The 29-song opus features Beanie Sigel (who made his major label debut appearance on "Adrenaline"), Eve, Jill Scott, Common, Roy Ayers, Raphael Saadiq, Dice Raw, Jaguar Wright, D'Angelo, and Mos Def, and is undeniable evidence of the influence they've had on the musical landscape over the course of their incredible career.
Of course, as evidenced by album titles like Phrenology and The Tipping Point, The Roots have always taken a very cerebral approach to making music. ?uestlove's musings on each song in the liner notes shows just how much thought the group puts into their creative process. Each volume has a 20-page insert that is filled with behind-the-scene insights that offer amazing glimpses into the group's experiences. Gems like their unbelievable tale of having to go through 11 different singers before finding someone to sing on "Break You Off" or dealing with the controversy surrounding Eve and Jill Scott on "You Got Me," makes this as worthwhile a read as a listen.

Great introduction to The Roots......................2006-12-30
Nuff Said. Go Cop it! Also do yourself a favor and get that Game Theory while you're at it!
The TRUTH.......2006-08-17
The Roots represent, that unrefined and pure hip hop. This CD is wonderful because it provides you with a sample of their great work. They are the truth, and unfortunately they are not recognized to the level that they should. The blending of live instruments is so pure in their music. I think that often individuals have been so tuned into radio, and commercial music, when they hear the purity of the Roots, they really don't know how to appreciate it. Well this is only a sample of the great work of the Roots. They are truly without a doubt the ultimate. Check this out, and then get more of their CD's to really feel their true talent.
Do you like good music...real music, soul music?.......2006-07-13
This compilation of 'Roots' songs is most definately one of the best albums I own. A must for hip-hop lovers, and anyone else who can appreciate quality, inventiveness, and genuine artistry in their music (regardless of what kind). The album perfectly compliments the groups musical versatility, with skillful wordplay, mezmorizing beats, and creative, singable hooks in towe. Reminds me why I continue to love the group, even as my faith in the genre diminishes... not that they necessarily fit any one genre completely. They're hip-hop in it's purest form , but also a subtle fusing of rap, jazz, soul, and even a bit of rock & Roll... What's not to love?
This is music to chill out to and appreciate for what it's worth... smart, intriguing, genuinely entertaining hip-hop/soul music.
A collection as diverse as the 'Roots' career itself; the album captures everything I love about this brand of hip-hop music. This is definately the best compilation of songs out of the two 'Homegrown' albums. 'Star', 'What they do', 'good music', and 'hypnotic' are classics. One of the few albums out that is absolutely worth buying.
JAZZ HIP HOP!.......2006-03-18
WHAT!! This CD only has 9 reviews!!
that's crazy man...
Vol.1 contains most of their best efforts
and is way better than Vol.2
i think they made a mistake by making a title of this album too long (newbies might get confused and don't even know what it is), but This cd ROCKS!
Roots Rap Right, and Here's the Proof.......2006-03-18
Roots is a group I've loved for a short time, but one I'm absolutely sure I would have loved had I found them earlier. The first album I ever owned of theirs was Tipping Point, and the first time I ever consciously heard their music was on the video game Gran Turismo 4. From that moment, I knew I liked their sound. They rapped the way it's supposed to be done, with a lot of heart and style, and, which is the most important to me, they don't plague their music by singing about drugs or anything of that nature.
This collection is of the Roots best songs since 1994 (or '93, when you consider the independent track). It's great hearing their sound progress through the years, while also realizing that they've stayed completely true to themselves and their spoken-word style backed by jazzy beats. Because this is essentially a greatest hits album, made before Roots switch to a different record producer, most of the songs are good, especially in this volume. My personal favorite songs are "The Lesson" feat. Dice Raw, which is almost a straight rap to a simple bebox beat, "Silent Treatment," mostly for its beat and sounds, and "Act Too," featuring Common.
Still, even being a greatest hits album, Roots just aren't old enough as a group for some of their fans to actually need this album, or the second volume of this. The title is right, because it's a great way to introduce people to the Roots sound and style, but anyone who has been with them for a few years won't find much on these CDs, unless you're a collector. Personally, I loved the chance to catch up on what I missed, and I'd recommend this CD to people who want to find something new with something old.

We are blessed here in the northeast. Almost every Saturday night we can go to Levon Helm's house & hear some of the greatest live music around. That's right, Levon Helm's (you might remember he was in a lil group called The Band) house is open to the public for his Midnight Ramble. You never know who's gonna show up either. On this particular night, little known harmonica player Little Sammy Davis appeared at the Ramble. Sammy escaped from Mississippi when he was about 13 years old & never looked back, working for a time with Earl Hooker. He fell out of the music scene for a while, no doubt to make some $$$ and support his family & we are again blessed when he decided to make upstate New York his home. Well folks now you can enjoy Levon's Midnight Ramble w/ special guest Little Sammy Davis in the comfort of your own home. If ya ever get up here on a Saturday night drop on by & tell Lee Wilbur sent ya.

Supergroup live albums are rare things; rarer still are those that work strictly on musical terms, rather than star fascination. This first volume of Texas Tornados concert recordings surpasses expectations partly because, after nine years together, the Tornados are no longer an uber-collaboration but instead are a road-wizened ensemble. Part Texas bar-band deluxe (as on the shout-along "Hey Baby Kep-Pa-So"), part keepers of the conjunto flame (as on Flaco Jimenez's scale-scorching accordion showcase "La Múcura/A Mover el Bote"), the Tornados have developed a swaggering on-stage personality without ever devolving into Tex-Mex jam-band territory. Blending together performances from two December '98 shows in Austin, the album lacks the thrill of a single hot night on stage (some tracks fade in and out awkwardly) but compensates with fairly gutty song selection. Familiar Tornados tunes are matched with classics by Freddy Fender ("Wasted Days") and Sir Douglas ("Mendocino"), plus a few surprises including a stirring waltz through "Eighteen Yellow Roses" and the Gene Autry warhorse "South of the Border." Jimenez, Fender, Doug Sahm, and Augie Meyers are backed by a faultless rhythm section, some R&B-style horns, and, best of all, some savory pedal steel work, all of which helps to lift these performances above the mere rehash category. --Roy Kasten

great songs, poor recording.......2000-08-04
This would have been a great show to have witnessed. Very few live recordings have the quality of sound that we are so accustomed to these days and this is no exception. This recording does convey the spirit of the event and the sheer enjoyment of the musicians in performing. Hopefully their studio recordings have the same good qualities and good recording as well. That is what I am purchasing next and advising whoever reads this to do.
Great Music!!.......1999-07-16
Since I live in Austin, Texas, I was one of the lucky ones that was able to attend both shows from which this album was recorded. As with most live CDs, the recording cannot meausre up to the live show, but the music on this CD is great.
I agree with Amazon's review that it tends to skip around too much. I don't understand why they don't just put the songs in the order the band played them. (Nothing was better than them opening the show with the "tornado" sound and "Hey Baby Que Paso?" but here it is the last track). However, this is the only fault I can find with the CD and I will listen to it for years to come.
My only other hope is that there is a Volume 2 on the way!!

The Jealous Kind makes other singers jealous.......1999-06-21
Let's face it...anyone named Delbert is probably danged good at his job...you can't tote that monkier through life and not strive to excel just to get folks to hush up. Delbert can sure enough make folk hush up, it's hard to chatter when your jaw drops. Anyone who sees Delbert perform for the first time just naturally gets left speechless, so come prepared with a pad and pencil if you're not already a fan. If you can't find him touring nearby, just listen to 'The Jealous Kind' a few times and see if it won't make you swear eternal loyalty to the Cult Of Delbert. You'll be in good company, as represented by other fans and reviewers listed here. Delbert's got the pipes, y'all. He's no Johnny Come Lately, honkeytonkin' is his craft and he's been working roadhouse crowds into frenzied true believers for more years than your Mama's been making good cornbread. He's got some good cuts on this CD, the title cut alone is worth the price, and 'Back To Louisiana' is guaranteed to get the halt & the lame up and rockin'. Like those Lotto folks say, "You can't win if you don't play"...and you can't win if you don't play some Delbert very loud and very often. Try his latest CD 'One of the Fortunate Few' for an update on how the rascal is rocking the house these days. Y'all might as well get with it, times a-wasting. Hurry up and get happy.
incrediblybluesriffic.......1999-01-02
this album is one of the best ever. so awesome, i bought it for my 60 year old father inlaw. he says delbert is the man!!!!
classic Delbert - never gets old.......1998-11-26
I bought the LP Jealous Kind in 1980? and it has always been one of my favorites. I think it ranks right up there with One of the Fortunate Few. Delbert is awesome!

Not Only by the Words of His Mouth..........2002-01-03
Versions galore on this top-notch Heartbeat release - even better, it's all genuine Upsetter material, as opposed to the multitude of double-dubious collections out there which string together inferior works by other people and then blazen Mr. Perry's good name across the sleeve. Kicking off with a truly spiritual take on the Congos' Ark of the Covenant, Heartbeat have come up with a tantalising taster of the Upsetter's dubwise Black Ark output, including well-dread versions of Junior Murvin's classics Tedious and Police & Thieves, Max Romeo's stompin' War In A Babylon, Junior Byles' funky Lorna Banana, and Junior Delgado's righteous Sons of Slaves. That's a lot of Juniors, eh? But do not be decieved: this is dub from the top drawer of the senior class (with honours). Check out Upsetter Shop Volume II - also from Hearbeat - which rounds up some classic early productions from the Bleechers, David Isaacs and many others...
Classic Dub.......2000-08-19
Theres nothing better than relaxing in the shade on a hot day listening to the sweet sounds of Dub. Lee Perry is a mad genius and this collection really shows off some of his best work. So if you like spaced out sounds and heavy bass, this disc is for you
