Marty Robbins has more greatest-hits compilations than most artists have hits. This 20-cut single-disc collection is one of the better values, with a representative selection that extends from gunfighter balladry such as "El Paso" (his 1959 chart-topper and biggest crossover success) and "Big Iron" to the calypso-tinged "Devil Woman" to his cover of Gordon Lightfoot's folkish "Ribbon of Darkness." Throughout his 30-year recording career, Robbins combined a tremulous tenor with canny commercial instincts, stretching the boundaries of country music while expanding his popular base. He was equally at home with a cowboy song ("Red River Valley"), a gospel tune ("You Gave Me a Mountain"), and a slice of Hawaiian exotica ("Aloha Oe"). Inexplicably, the album features the schmaltzy "Love Is Blue" at the expense of "A White Sport Coat (And a Pink Carnation)," a '50s pop smash that remained one of his biggest hits. --Don McLeese

Marty Robbins believed he was a reincarnated cowboy. Many of his songs came from dreams. All 20 of these wonderful songs take you to another place and time and tell delicious stories of love and adventure. Wonderful places to go - especially if you're a true Marty Robbins fan.

Mixed Emotions.......2004-11-30

You can take any given number of Marty Robbins songs and call them his greatest hits as the man had talent and versatility to spare. Certainly most of the songs on this package are exceptional but there are so many left out. "A White Sport Coat (And a Pink Carnation)", perhaps his greatest crossover hit is missing in favor of Hank Williams, Sr.'s "Kaw-Liga" (done to death) and the so-so "Maria (If I Could"). And the hit doesn't even appear on the follow-up album of "more greatest hits". What were they thinking? Early hits "I Couldn't Keep From Crying" and "The Story of My Life" are not here. And on it goes. You will probably enjoy most or all of the songs herein but if you can find it, it's better to go for "The Essential Marty Robbins 1951-1982" that covers some hokey early recordings before he hit his stride plus the ones named, other certified HITS and songs that were only mild hits or not hits at all but are a lot more rewarding to listen to than the less-than-blockbuster filler found here. Shop around before you buy.

Blue-eyed R&B Country.......2005-12-14

Eddie Rabbitt made quite a career out of singing songs that fit comfortably on both AC and Country stations. Hits like "Gone Too Far" and "I Love A Rainy Night" were played on both and received with much enthusiasm. To my knowledge, Rabbitt was never considered a sell out. Perhaps this is because he consistently churned out songs like "Suspicions" that fit perfectly on AC radio and then turned around and made Country greats like "Drivin' My Life Away" and "Rocky Mountain Music." With Rabbitt, unlike most modern "Country" acts, I believe his intentions were never to be pigeon-holed into one genre of music. He was comfortable singing both Soft Rock and Country music and never seemed intent on becoming one of those forced "Pop" Country stars like so many today. He didn't wear a cowboy hat and tight T-shirts, never sang about drivin' his Chevy down to the lake for a late-night romance with his John Deere queen, and he was never a poser. He was Eddie Rabbitt, no more, no less.

This particular disc of greatest hits is well worth the price. My personal favorite, and probably my all-time favorite tune by Rabbitt, is "Two Dollars In The Jukebox." Though it lacks many of his hits like "Just You And I," "Step By Step," and "Every Which Way But Loose," you can get all of those and more on "Eddie Rabbitt-Greatest Hits" which is almost always coupled with this disc by Amazon in the "Better Together" listing. In fact, the cost of both of these discs together is still cheaper than buying some other, lesser artists greatest hits single disc collections.

I definitely suggest buying this album and the aforementioned "Greatest Hits" disc together if you enjoy Eddie Rabbitt. Fans of artists such as Doug Stone, Conway Twitty, and 80's R&B country will be sure to enjoy this album also.

Thanks to radio stations like KiQQ and Kiis in Los Angeles in the early 80's, I received exposure to Pop Country tunes like Drivin' my life away and Suspicions. I grew to like the music of Eddie Rabbitt over the years and finally scored with this "All Time Greatest Hits" CD. I realize that there are other hit songs missing from this collection, but for the price, you just can't beat it! Good music, good price, good artist! Four stars!

Great collection but very incomplete.......2005-05-17

Eddie's passing was a great loss to all his fans and now we don't have anyone who can really fill his shoes. He has such a sweet voice and his tunes have been some of the most memorable Country Pop songs ever.

However, this collection is strangely missing some very good songs e.g. "Room at the top of the stairs", "You and I" and "You don't love me anymore" which are jewels not to be left out.

Unfortunately there is no one CD with all his good songs in it and one has to buy a few of his so-called "Greatest Hits" albums to enjoy all his great songs. Is this some kind of a marketing ploy or what?

Anyway, I am still waiting for one really good Eddie Rabbitt compilation and hopefully Rhino Music will oblige soon. The good songs in this album are the remarkable "Suspicions" and "I can't help myself". You will be swept off your feet with his laid-back country&western&pop songs done in his inimitable style.

Time to reminisce with Eddie.

Add what "is" on this disc: Suspicions, Drivin' My Life Away, I Love A Rainy Night... and it could be an awesome piece of work... (thumbs down!)
By the way, as I write this, Mr. Rabbitt celebrated his 60th birthday (11-27-44).

Great Early Crystal.......2007-03-16

This is early Crystal, classic stuff. She's never received the critical appreciation she should have received, but she's put out some very unusual songs, for a country or pop artist. Her two biggest hits, Don't it make my brown eyes blue and Talking in your sleep, are cases in point. The first is almost a jazz piece, with the lilting piano and Crystal's subtle rhythmic changes as a counterpoint, while the second is one of the only hits I know that starts out with a single chord, declarative voice, almost talking, and very slow pace. Loretta Lynn says that no one sings a torch song better than Crystal, and Talking in your sleep provides all the proof you need. It's a great song, and I think it hasn't been recorded much because no one thinks that they can improve on Crystal's version. The entire CD is full of good songs, only gets 4 stars, because these are not Crystal's all time greatest hits. She has many more. For those who still follow her music, get her Hoagy Carmichael CD. It's a classic.

Heartfelt Songs From A Great Vocalist.......2006-05-11

What a great buy to get Crystal Gayle's top tunes all on one CD. This replaces the worn audiocassettes that I just don't get out anymore. I've missed her full, melodious voice and the insightful lyrics.
When I went through my divorce years ago, lines like the following tore at my heart, let me wallow in my feelings of loss and finally helped me look ahead, out of the abyss:
"Was I right, was I wrong, a little too weak or a little too strong?"
"Is she what you wanted?"
"Somebody loves you... Guess who loves you... I do."
"Why do I go through life with nothing at all? When I dream, I dream of you, Maybe someday you will come true."
"Honey, can you find it in you to come back home?"
"I guess you must have had your reasons... I knew you never found yourself in what we had."
"I know my heart will mend, I know that I'll smile again. I'll get back on my feet again."

Country music always had great cheating songs, but Crystal Gayle takes it to a whole new level that reaches non-country listeners.

The Greatest Hit's of Crystal Gayle.......2005-02-12

This is a superb compilation. Crystal charted many, many hit singles in the 70s and 80s and as a life long country fan I can truly say this collection really contains the cream of the crop.

"Why have you left the one you left me for" with it's troubling lyrics, yet feel good rhythm and "Talking In your sleep," a slow ballad, about a woman left wondering are here. Two very well known songs and they are probably my favourite songs she has ever recorded.

Elsewhere we have "When I dream", a top 40 hit in the late 1970s is also included, as is the big one, "Don't it make my brown eyes blue", her best known recording that took her career to a new height and was a success all over the world.

This album really lives up to it's title as "Crystal Gayle's All Time Greatest Hit's"

BEAUTIFUL COUNTRY POP.......2000-11-15

Gayle straddles country and pop - accessible enough for the mainstream yet genuine enough to be country. I love her sweet voice and accomplished interpretations, my favourite tracks being Talking In Your Sleep, the bouncy reggae-rhythmed Why Have You Left The One You Left Me For, Wrong Road Again and the tender When I Dream (I dream of you/maybe someday, you will come true). Great voice, great songs, great delivery - real music from the heart.

Class, and a wonderful voice.......2000-02-09

I'm not a big country music fan but for a few years they had my attention. My favorite country artists were Tammy Wynette (NOT for Stand By Your Man), Dolly Parton, Don Williams, George Jones, and the sweetest of all, to me, Crystal Gayle. The first song I heard by her was Somebody Loves You and it remains one of my favorite songs. Then came I'll Get Over You. I discovered her before she crossed over with Brown Eyes Blue. You have to listen to When I Dream, Talking In Your Sleep, and You Never Miss A Real Good Thing. When she came to New York I went to see her 2 or 3 nights in a row at The Bottom Line. She has so much class and she is so sweet. After her set ended, a guy handed her flowers and asked for an autograph. When she came out for her encore she first handed the guy the autograph he asked for. A down to earth girl who appreciates her fans.

Great collection but where is the song "I Feel Like Loving You Again" (the studio version)? I can't seem to find it anywhere except on his "Live at Billy Bob's" CD. That song was #1 according to Billboard Country so why isn't it on any of his greatest hits recordings?

I saw T.G. Sheppard twice in person and thought both shows were excellent. I always loved his music. This CD has some of his best and I liked everyone of them. Excellent buy for the money.

This would be a good solid addition to anyone's collection who loves mid 70's to late 80's country music, but they missed in a couple of ways; first they left off one of (if not THE) very best song of his career "Devil In The Bottle". In my mind, they could have left off "Somewhere Down the Line" or "Finally" and put "Devil" on there and it would have rated five stars.

A good but not complete sampling of greates hits .......2005-01-25

T.G. Sheppard had a good run of hits in the 70's and 80's and this album samples his better known songs such as "War is Hell..." "Finally" and "Party Time".
Sheppard is very good at singing the ballad, the cheating song and the love song or even the rare "whimsical song" such as his duet with Clint Eastwood in "Go Ahead, Make My Day" not included here, and that is why he was among country's superstars during this era.
This is a good album to sample his talent.

Obie's Little Brother, Dewayne Jessie.......2006-03-01

This CD is a cool one to own. These were recorded by actor Dewayne Jessie (but in the movie "Animal House," the songs Shama Lama Ding Dong and Shout were sung by Lloyd Williams and lip-synched by Jessie). Not many people know that Dewayne Jessie is the younger brother of R&B legend Obie Jessie AKA Young Jessie (who sang with The Flairs and The Coasters, and also recorded and wrote the original "Mary Lou"). This is the only CD released by Otis Day (Dewayne Jessie) and it was produced by Funkadelic George Clinton. Grab a copy of this hard to find CD.

Otis Day&The Knights - 'Shout' (MCA).......2005-10-05

I barely even knew anything at all about this band until recently.As most of you probably are aware of,Otis Day&The Knights were the fictional house band in the frat classic 'Animal House' movie.I've recently seen them play the oldies circuit co-headlining with the Kingsmen("Louie Louie")and I thought lead vocalist DeWayne Jessie sort of reminded me of like an Ike Turner wanna-be.The show as well as this CD is decently performed R&B.Cannot believe that only one other patron had reviwed this release.Somewhat happening tracks include "Function At The Junction",the Isley Brother's nugget "Shout" and "Shamalamma Ding Dong".Not sure as to which artists originally penned out the cuts on this disc,but I think most if not all may be cover tunes.No matter,'Shout',Otis Day&The Knight's sole album isn't bad.Might appeal to fans of Booker T.Jones,Sam&Dave,Otis Redding and Wilson Pickett.Check it out.
