Biography RAYNE ROBERTS
Rayne Roberts was born Paul Edward Roberts, October 11, 1963 at Dorton, Kentucky to Russell and Glema Roberts.
Rayne grew up in Virgie, Kentucky with his parents, sister Carolyn, and half-brother Eugene Good from his mother's first marriage. His dad, a disabled Korean War veteran was a carpenter, which in the 60's paid very little money. The Roberts family was less than middle class, in fact, they were very poor. However, they had one thing going for them that money couldn't buy LOVE.
Rayne had a normal childhood, playing sports as most kids do growing up. At an early age Rayne caught himself in front of the mirror pretending to be a rock star singer while listening to KISS, Cat Stevens, 3 Dog Night and other artists from the 70's on his sister's phonograph.
After entering high school the youth stayed in trouble. He was eventually kicked out and told never to come back. Not caring, he went home to tell his dad what had happened. Not knowing what to expect, he was surprised when his dad simply said: "Well, if you're not gonna learn, you're goin' to work." The next day he was on the job as his dad's carpenter's helper. Shortly afterward, Rayne's father retired from the business, and Rayne was glad of it.
In 1978 at the age of 15 Rayne began to learn to play the guitar, an electric guitar in which his dad had bought for him at G.C. Murphy's, a local retail store. His dad said that if he learned to play it, he would buy an amplifier to go along with that guitar. So Rayne sat up into the late hours of the night and early morning learning chords from an old Mel Bay Learn How to Play Guitar book. The first song Rayne learned was "I Walk the Line" by Johnny Cash, one of his dad's favorites. Shortly after, he played it for him, his dad bought him the amplifier he promised. A month later the $39.00 guitar fell apart, but Russell, believing in his son and though he couldn't afford it bought Rayne a brand new guitar that cost about $600.00 then. All he asked in return was for him to earn enough money with it that would offset his investment in his son's future.
Rayne continued to play but never really took it seriously, only earning about $35 with the instrument within the next several years. Instead, he did what seemed to be the normal thing in a small town, and that was to try to make a living, get married and have kids. Rayne married when he was 22 and to this marriage, daughter, Erica and son, Dustin were born. The marriage was very rocky and finally ended in April 1993. That same month he experienced the unexpected death of his father, Russell, who died of an apparent heart attack while mowing the lawn. Rayne was only a few feet from his father when he saw him fall to the ground. He rushed to his father's aid in the hope he could revive him, but it was too late, he was already dead. Rayne, in mourning and crushed from his father's death gave up music all together for the next year. He married again later that year. A short lived marriage and another daughter, Cheyenne, resulted from this union. The singer/songwriter wa! s now 29 years old, divorced twice, the father of 3 children and unemployed. What next?
It seemed that nothing worse could happen. But in August 1994, Rayne suffered from a heart attack that almost cost him his life. After recuperating, all seemed to be fine with him, but in January 1995 six months later, he suffered again from chest pains while in the doctor's office awaiting a checkup. He collapsed on the floor, suffering another heart attack. The second one within six months required surgery where he had blockages in the main arteries. Rayne then started his recuperating process again not knowing what he would do or how he would make a living. He once again turned to music and began giving it more thought.
In 1995 Rayne joined with some other local musicians and formed the band Renegade. The band played all over Southeast Kentucky
