Don Was, the producer who transformed Bonnie Raitt from cult hero to pop star, tried to jump-start the stalled careers of Willie Nelson and Waylon Jennings by producing their recent albums, Across the Borderline and Waymore's Blues (Part II), respectively. This resulted in two artistic triumphs but no hits. That didn't deter Nelson and Jennings from hiring Was to produce their album with Johnny Cash and Kris Kristofferson as the Highwaymen. The Road Goes on Forever is easily the best of the three Highwaymen albums, even if changing radio tastes will probably doom it to the poorest sales of the three. The two earlier releases, 1985's Highwaymen and 1990's Highwaymen 2, were thrown together as if the sheer starpower of the four singers could carry the project. Both albums had their exciting moments when everything clicked but both also had a lot of filler. By contrast, Was approached the new recording as if every song and every arrangement had to be good enough to be a single. He picked one obscure but terrific composition from each of the four singers and supplemented them with equally strong material from four of Texas's best songwriters--Steve Earle, Billy Joe Shaver, Stephen Bruton, and Robert Earl Keen Jr. Nelson's harmonica ace Mickey Raphael and Kristofferson's singing buddy Billy Swan are joined by top L.A. session pros like keyboardist Benmont Tench and drummer Kenny Aronoff to create a sound that has the twangy picking of old-fashioned country and the fat bottom of modern pop. The result is an album with everything: first-rate material, grade-A playing, and inimitable singing. The thread that ties Nelson, Jennings, Cash, and Kristofferson together is the crustiness of their voices (a honey-voiced singer like George Jones or Don Gibson would seem out of place in this crowd); when they sing Shaver's "(I'm Going To) Live Forever," they sound as if they're more than halfway there. The Highwaymen are so naturally hard-bitten and world-weary that they can slip a little sentiment into a song without spoiling it. They use this to great advantage on the album's two great outlaw songs, Earle's "The Devil's Right Hand" and Keen's title tune; the gruff tales of violence lead up to a sobering admission of the price paid for such a life. That same gruffness allows the Highwaymen to sing two religious meditations, Jennings's "I Do Believe" and Cash's "Death and Hell," without once sounding sanctimonious. --Geoffrey Himes

+1/2 -- Misproduced shoulda-been cap to supergroup's catalog.......2006-01-06
Waylon, Willie, Cash and Kristofferson met for this third and final collaboration in 1995, and given their proven chemistry, the presence of producer Don Was, and an outstanding selection of material, this should have been the supergroup's ultimate statement. Unfortunately, Was mired the quartet in modern arrangements that were at odds with the their aging, world-weary vocals, and have aged poorly in the intervening decade. The material often outshines the performances, with contemporary Texas classics from Earle, Shaver and Keene failing to find compelling new ground here. The artists connect most fully on their own compositions, including Jennings' gruff balance of faith, responsibility and self-determination, "I Do Believe," Cash's florid story of a visit with a New Orleans' prostitute, "Death and Hell," and Kristofferson's crufty "Here Comes That Rainbow Again."
This tenth-anniversary reissue's must-buy value is derived from the five acoustic demo bonus tracks. Listening to the legends audition songs for their compadres gives one an inkling of the album that could've been. "Live Forever" finds Cash tapping his foot as Nelson picks along to find his part, and Jennings' "I Ain't Song" is interrupted by Kristofferson's gut-busting laugh as the former sing-speaks "I ain't old and I ain't bitter, and I ain't mad at anyone." Kristofferson bangs out "Closer to the Bone" on his guitar as Cash's baritone resonates underneath, and Nelson turns "Pick up the Tempo" into a singalong. There's magic in these interpersonal relationships, it just didn't turn up on all the studio tracks. 3 stars for the original album, but an extra half-star for the bonus tracks. Customer Reviews:
Last of three great albums.......2005-04-13
Johnny Cash, Willie Nelson, Waylon Jennings and Kris Kristofferson came together as the Highwaymen in the mid-eighties to record an album and tour together. It proved so successful that they eventually recorded two more, this being the last of the trilogy. It is similar in style to the first two.
Most of the songs here are covers, often of songs that one or other of the members had written recorded as a solo artist. The set opens with a Steve Earle song, The devil's right hand, which gets the album off to a great start. I do believe (written by Waylon), End of understanding (written by Willie), Death and Hell (written by Johnny and June) and Here comes that rainbow again (written by Kris) ensure that all the members of the Highwaymen get a share of the songwriting royalties as well as the recording royalties.
Elvis once recorded True love travels on a gravel ro0ad (a Dallas Frazier song), but it's not one of his famous recordings. I like his version but I also like the Highwaymen's version. Billie Joe Shaver, who provided Waylon with most of the songs for one of his classic albums (Honky tonk heroes), wrote Live forever. Kevin Welch, who established himself as a songwriter long before making it as a singer, wrote Everyone gets crazy. Stephen Bruton wrote one song (Waiting for a long time) and co-wrote another (It is what it is). Robert Earl Keen, who eventually got the chance to record his own music, contributed the title track.
There are no real surprises here - you know who Johnny, Willie, Waylon and Kris are, you know the kind of music they record and you'll find it here. All four singers have recorded many more important albums than this but if you've already got their important music and still want more, you'll enjoy this album.
another winner.......2004-09-28
I'm very happy with this third album by Kris, Cash, Waylon, and Willie. It's a beauty folks. The guys sound like they are having a ball! Waylon's "I Believe" is my favorite track but every song on this disc is a winner and I can listen to this CD forever. I'm still deciphering Cash's Death and Hell! Very imaginative!
Four great singer/songwriters, one amazing album........2004-06-12
There's no disputing that Johnny Cash, Waylon Jennings, Willie Nelson, and Kris Kristofferson are four of the most influential singer/songwriters in any musical genre. That they all happen to inhabit country music is a minor miracle in and of itself. That you can put the four men into one studio without their egos colliding is another.
"The Road Goes On Forever" is a great album, as you might expect. I would've given it five stars, had more of the guys' own material been present. As is, Waylon sings his moving "I Do Believe," Willie romps through "The End of Understanding," Cash braves his haunting "Death and Hell", and Kristofferson sings of redemption and human kindness in "Here Comes That Rainbow Again."
The other songs, too, are of top notch quality--don't get me wrong about that. "It Is What It Is" had to've been written especially for these guys to sing; Steve Earle's superb "The Devil's Right Hand" is given a new--but respectful--arrangement; "Live Forever" and "Everyone Gets Crazy" have a reminiscent quality that is as moving as it is listenable.
"The Road Goes On Forever" combines four of music's best--the Big Four, we shall call them--and features some of their best performances. Though Cash and Waylon have passed on, this and other Highwaymen albums, shows that although they were great on their own, they were something special when they got together with their two good friends, Willie and Kristofferson. The Highwaymen will never be again, sadly (at least not in this original lineup; I don't care who gets together to take their place), but this album is a testament to their creativity and lasting influence on both each other and the music industry in general.
The Best of the Best.......2003-07-31
Each of the four amazing talents here blend togetehr seemlessly creating the best of The Highwaymen albums. Each singer is also showcased individually on four different songs proving that they can stand on their own as well. The singing and songwriting on this album is really heartfelt and shines through in every sense. Not a minute of wasted space on this one. If you like any of the four Johnny, Willie, Kris, or Waylon, you will love this album!
A great Album.......2001-10-15
The old dogs of country band together again for this 3rd album, calling themself The Highwaymen. The album is in my opinion full of highlights. The album is full of great country-anthems. From the title track over the beautiful I Do Believe and over Cash' dark and brooding Death and Hell. I really think that the old guys are supplementing each other well, and they sound great when they are together. It is like they take the best from each of them and add it.

Any road you want..........2001-07-26
I have only just relistened to the the "Any Road Up" portion of this disc and it brought back a lot of great memories for me. I saw SGB with the WHO in a little gymnasium in Sindlefingen, Germany back in 76. The show was amazing!!! Gibbons rocked and his version of Watching the River Flow was stupendous. At the time that their album "Down In The Bunker" was released he was being touted as a "British Bob Seger" which I feel did him a real disservice. Seger had started the sharp decline into AOR mediocrity which he has since continued but Gibbons was still vital, rockin and relevant. The Real Shame was that he was never accepted stateside because at the time he was needed on american radio. Just a note he has an album/cd available thru import of dylan covers which are great. YOU MUST BUY THIS CD IF YOU VALUE GOOD,SMART, HONEST, ROCK N ROLL!!!
Steve Gibbons.......2000-12-03
I agree with Ralph; "Down in the Bunker" should be re-released. The music is real 'Rock and Roll'. Steve Gibbons reminds me of Chuck Berry and Jerry Lee Lewis. His music has an undercurrent of humor. He does not take himself; or his music too seriously. UNDER-Appreciated is the term that springs to mind. I saw the Kingsmen in 1965. They offered the same type of irreverance as the Steve Gibbons Band. "Louie, Louie" and "Down in the Bunker" are like cousins; they evoke smiles, double entendres and just plain Feel Good ! I'm buying this CD ! And, I want more.
Double Dose Dynamite.......2000-06-29
Like so many British rockers of the mid-seventies, Gibbons grew up influenced by fifties r&r and British skiffle. His long, hard work gigging up & down pubs adding hue to his rock. This double CD courtesy Road Goes On Forever teams up two great Gibbons albums on a double CD set that's surprisingly affordable and still enjoyable after all these years (both albums had seen limited North American release on MCA at the time). Like Dire Straits, the guitars tend to be bendable and fluid, the vocals a little grimy and unpolished, the production edgy and bright. But these are all pluses, especially on cuts like "Spark Of Love", "Rollin'", "Now You Know Me" and "Till The Fire Burns Out". Both CDs also boast bonus tracks (five in all) that sound like they fit right in. Like Sniff N'The Tears and Ducks Deluxe, Steve Gibbons serves up great British-flavored rock that's winning and heartening to hear. Fans won't be disappointed. Now, is there any chance somebody will reissue DOWN IN THE BUNKER, Steve's superb 1978 album?

Coming of age during the late-'60s supergroup boom, the Allman Brothers Band initially found fame by dosing their deceptively authentic taste for American blues and jazz with some U.K.-bred guitar heroics, then taking to the road with ferocious abandon. As originally released in 1975, this anthology charted the high points of the Allman Brothers' initial five albums, highlighted by the fiery live recordings of At Fillmore East and Eat a Peach. Now doubled in both size and scope, it effectively documents the full arc of the band's career during the '70s. Guitarist Dickey Betts's creative emergence neatly coincided with the decade's musical mellowing and country-rock affectations. Just as Eric Clapton seemed to become a Saxonized Don Williams as the '70s wore on, the Allmans became something more akin to Little Feat-lite in the wake of Betts's "Rambling Man" and Gregg Allman's solo successes--and unlikely also-rans to Lynyrd Skynyrd in the rebel rock sweepstakes. This is a compelling overview of a band often shortchanged by classic rock's inherent myopia. --Jerry McCulley
Customer Reviews:
Great Anthology Of 70s Allman Brothers Band.......2005-11-27
THE ROAD GOES ON FOREVER, in its expanded, remastered incarnation, is a great Anthology of prime-period Allman Brothers Band material, even if the more concise A DECADE OF HITS 1969-1979, along with AT FILLMORE EAST, BEGINNINGS, BROTHERS AND SISTERS, and EAT A PEACH, when purchased together, pack a harder punch. Highlights include "Whipping Post", "Ain't Wastin' Time No More", "Wasted Words", "Ramblin' Man", "Southbound", "Jessica", and "Crazy Love." The belief among past and present Allman Brothers Band members that the young Australian tourist jailed in Indonesia on drug-smuggling charges was unjustly convicted makes this an essential purchase for both your ears AND your conscience.
The perfect Allman Brothers sampler. Live & Studio tracks. .......2005-07-22
I had this on vinyl, 2 record set, 'back in the day'.
It was great then , & now it's even better.
Added are 13 bonus tracks with a good amount of live tracks on this 2 CD set.
That's a huge plus for the original Southern Jam band.
The Live At The Fillmore East is an alltime classic. It is represented, on this release, by 4 songs.
The addition of One Way Out was recorded at the Fillmore, but released on Eat A Peach is worthy.
So, it's a total of 5 Fillmore East tracks.
Excellent song selection, that reflects a cross section of live & studio recordings.
I think that Allman Brothers are best heard live, but the concise studio versions are good players too.
There are plenty of classic early Allman Brothers songs including; It's Not My Cross To Bear, Blackhearted Woman, Dreams,Whipping Post, Midnight Rider, Statesboro Blues, Stormy Monday, In Memory of Elizabeth Reed...
At 30 tracks, this is an excellent value.
Great for crusin'too!
Impressive Update ****1/2.......2005-03-09
If you look at the original track listing for the first edition of ABB's "The Road Goes on Forever" retrospective, you get the sneaking suspicion that the record label was fighting the clock. Maybe a deadline kept them from including classic album tracks from "Idlewild South" and "Eat a Peach." Is there any other explaination for excluding excellent southern standards like "Not My Cross To Bare?"
Well, on this 2001 reissue right is put right. The set is expanded to 2 discs and it is the prefect introduction and even a better summary than anything they have done live. That comment may require some explaination to many hard-cores preferring "At Fillmore East," but for those of us not raised on southern rock, 30-plus minutes of "Mountain Jam" may require more than just time. On these tracks, the Allman Brothers power is showcased in a closed, controlled, and focused enviornment, expunging anything occuring outside the magic. The tracks are presented chronologically, a plus for newcomers. I prefer the studio versions of "Trouble No More," "Blackhearted Woman," and even the post-Duane "Ramblin' Man" to the bloated live versions. And yes, disc two dies down a bit after the generous 6 tracks from the classic "Eat a Peach" LP, but what can you say for a band who loses the greatest slide-guitar hand of all-time? This set is orderly, definitive, and near perfect.
Overall: 9 out of 10.
If You are Only Going to Own one Allman CD, this is it.......2004-04-14
The Road Goes on Forever is very much along the lines of Columbia's double cd "Essential" packages. This set includes songs from every album the ABB released from 1969-1979. Featured are all the radio hits as well as most classic album cuts. "The Road" is as good of a best-of album as you could expect, covering the first decade of this American institution.
The only downside is the lack of a few more live tracks, considering how much the Allman Brothers have been known as a live band during their entire career. That being said, this is THE one to get if you know you are getting just one by the ABB.
If you want to venture to their 90s-00s material afterward, you might go with an the top shelf An Evening With the Allman Brothers, Mycology, or their excellent 2003 release Hittin the Note. Whatever you do, avoid anything the band recorded for Arista in the early 80s.
Look No Further - This is THE one to get!.......2004-03-21
I disagree strongly with MUTIMAman on this CD. In my opinion, any Allman Brothers greatest hits package that does not contain "It's Not My Cross To Bear" is a total waste of time and this is the only one that has it...aside from the box set. "Cross" is , in my opinion, the best blues song ever laid down on vinyl. I have been a professionl musician for almost 30 years now and am still amazed at the passion and tastefulness of the lead vocals and guitar solos in that song. I rarely find a greatest hits package that totally pleases me, but this one does. Buy it and you'll see.

Strawbs Greatest Hits Live.......2000-06-25
I have been a Strawb Fan since the early 70`s istill love their music when I got Geatest Hits Live I was expecting the Strawbs may not sound as good as in the old days but this live video quickly made me realise they are just as good now as they were before ,I felt the only weak points were the keyboard player and the bass player but everyone else was great.Dave Cousins sounds great as always,Brian Willoughby does a great job on lead guitar ,Richard Hudson was great as usual on drums and Tony Hooper was fine I just felt the bass player was weak when they did Down By The Sea and he left out that great little bass fill and there was just silence. The Keyboard player just wasn`t the caliber the Strawbs had always used but he was ok .I really liked the video though ,it was really great seeing this fantastic band live again even if it was just on tape.

Production ruins this one........2002-06-02
This disc is rendered unlistenable due to the production. Cheesy electronic piano/keyboard sounds coupled with unimaginative, mechanical and loud drumming spoil what could have been a decent outing. Even the worthwhile compositions are wasted as the sound is just grating. The worst in an otherwise terrific catalog.

Both good albums in their own ways.......1999-08-16
Neither of these albums are as good as the Strawb's Seventies output, but each has several tunes and characteristics to recommend it. Chief among these is Brian Willoughby, probably the best guitarist the band ever had. His leads soar and lift every song. Also, Dave Cousins'voice has, if anything, gotten better with age; there's a softer edge which makes songs such as the title cut from RINGING DOWN THE YEARS truly moving (it's a tribute to former Strawb/Fairport Convention songstress Sandy Denny). The main flaw is one which ruined a lot of "progressive" bands in the Eighties; bland techno arrangements that sound radio-ready and samey. It's a testament to the band that this doesn't sink most of the material, but both of these albums would've been better without that quality.

"further proof".......2004-05-21
This disc is further proof to 2 things: steve gibbons is a very talented rock musician; and RGF records is one great label. I can only surmise that the title "Maintaining Radio Silence" is a tongue-in-cheek slag on the current state of radio, but nevermind. If radio doesn't play this music, I'll spend much less time listening to radio! Steve's sense of humour & slick way with lyrics once again are amply demonstrated in "Let There Be Bop." Listen to this one carefully - it'll make you smile. A country side is shown with "Manyana." The extra tracks RGF included in this package are indeed a great bonus. "Don't Wanna Let You Down" is revisited after only a couple of decades or so. "TT92" is from the "Birmingham to Memphis" disc, but the cherry on the sundae may well be "Harley Davidson." If there were any real justice out there for Steve, H-D would be using this song for world-wide advertising. It's that much of a hoot! This is one very enjoyable disc from the 1st song to the last. Keep playin' that rock n roll, Steve......please!

A True Story Teller.......2005-04-03
I don't give 5 stars out easily, but the content of this CD rates up there with the likes of Harry Chapin, Loudon Wainwright, and Simon & Garfunkel. What you get is a man, his guitar, and his intellect. At first I was concerned with the CD becoming tedious. How interesting can 30 songs be with the same singer, no band or voice backups, and no electronic wizardry? The answer is I was stunned at how good it was. I sat and listened to 135 minutes of pure entertainment. The talent Pacheco possesses is real and deep. This is a rare & expensive CD, but if you're a fan of story tellers, you must add this to your collection.
The lost gem.......2000-09-05
Out of any hipe, an immigrant, american songwriter Tom Pacheco has it all but fame, real protest songs, that once would have labelled him as the new Dylan, an added touch of his adopted country Ireland make him one of the most urgent and immediate singer sogwriters of his generation. In this two hour+ dbl set Pacheco uses only his voice and his guitar to sing some new and old songs and in its way this is an almost unique venture, that I would put as one of the best vocal/guitars cd's of all time. Few people know how good this guy is, but many will know it in the future. If you like folk, 60's music, and great songwriting don't skip this cd.
