About the Artist
The Brotherhood of the Rose is two brothers from New York City, Tom and Patch Rose. Between them, they have been singing and writing songs for almost thirty years. Tom Rose (Composer) spent many years touring the globe with the very successful U.S. Air Force spectacular, TOPS IN BLUE. A self-taught guitarist, he has been the driving force of several successful bands, including Strychnine, one of the most popular club bands in San Antonio in the 1980s. Patch Rose (Lyricist) is a successful singer in his own right. His first CD, Broadway (distributed by Sony Portugal), won critical acclaim in Europe, and established him as a world-class entertainer. SONGWRITING AWARDS:

All I Want Tonight Is You, 1998 ASCAP Songwriting Award Winner. This song was recorded by Patch Rose and Portuguese singing star, Nucha. It was a featured single on the platinum-selling CD, In Love 2 (Distributed by EMI Portugal).

I don't actually own this particular compilation, however, since I own nearly every recording represented on these discs...I think I'm qualified to comment. This is a wonderful representation of the high quality of work that DRG Records does.
The previous review is way off the mark. This is definitely not a waste of time or money. This is 25 years of preserving Broadway shows, Off-Broadway shows, studio recordings (mostly from the city center concerts), etc. So what if they "aren't as good as the original", DRG is preserving many recordings and artists that other mainstream labels don't or won't. You have wonderful recordings from Brian Stokes Mitchell, Nathan Lane, Debbie Gravitte, Tyne Daly, Anthony Perkins, Joanna Gleason, Marin Mazzie, Carol Burnett, Heather Headley, Patti LuPone, Barbara Cook, etc., and many of these are from Original Cast Recordings just as they appeared on Broadway. This is an excellent sampler of the work going on at DRG. No...I'm not an employee...just an avid listener and collector of theatre recordings.

There's a reason you've probably never heard of most of the songs and shows on this album, not to mention most of the artists. This is a second-rate collection of second-rate numbers performed by mostly second-rate artists. In the case of the shows that were revivals, the performances on the original cast recordings were better. Don't waste your money.

      I titled this "creativity" because that is what this album represents to the utmost. A wide variety of artists from the rock and jazz worlds (Peter Frampton, Joe Jackson, Doctor John, Bobbie McFerrin, Mark Bingam...) got together to produce a wild, weird, and wonderful tribute to Monk. This album is for fans of jazz and jazz fusion who have open minds. You probably won't like everything on it. I don't, but I gave it 5 stars because some songs are so great and interesting (Jackson's moody Round Midnight, Bingham's Brilliant Corners, and the swinging versions of Bye-Ya and In Walked Bud are among my favorites.) This album has commercial stars, but it was NOT made to sell and make money. It was made because these folks love music and love Monk. And it shows.

      Got this in 84' when lp's(double) still ruled and was sparked by all the talent associated with this project.Love Jazz but my soul is in Rock. Todd the Amazing is on this with Gary Windo(alto) doing "Four in One" that will make your head spin. Steve Khan,Frampton,Chris Spedding all give steller performances. If your taste runs to Fusion,blues,pop and love the masters of jazz
      with new interpetations give this a spin. You can say hi to John Zorn(get anything this man does!) on this too. Can you dig it--- I thought you could!

      "Ah, but there are nine tracks on the album" you think! Correct, but two of these are really quite at odds with the excellence of the rest of the album.Firstly, on "Saturday Night Fish Fry" Brother Jack gets to croak - you can't call it singing. Secondly "The age of Aquarius" isn't suited to what is in effect McDuff's road band -alto player Andrew Beals wrote the chart - his first in eleven years, and it's not very good at all.Apart from that the album is as good as any of the other Concord releases, with the title track and an absolutely belting "Blooze in G" the pick of the tracks. Even "Theme from Mission Impossible" is given a makeover to transform it into something different.The sound of the brass section is different to other albums - less of them, but this gives John Hart on guitar a real chance to stretch out, which he does with aplomb.

Instrumental until the last piece, this CD makes pleasant background music for one working or reading. The lively beat and familiar tunes hold the interest of the listener who is ready for a more intense involvement in the music. All in all, this was a worthwhile purchase.

      This is one of my favorite Canadian Brass CDs. If you enjoy Bernstein's Candide and West Side Story, you'll find a fresh take on many of the most memorable tracks. My personal favorite on this CD is 'Make Our Garden Grow.' The soaring trumpeters always give me chills, and the climax is massive! Also, the final track on this CD gives you a chance to hear the VOICES of the Canadian Brass performers in a comical version of 'Gee, Officer Krumpke.' Overall, this CD has wide range of styles and definitely shows that the Canadian Brass is not just a group of stuffy musicians!

      One would expect a British revival of West Side Story to be all wrong--the slighest Britishness in the accents would be ruinous. This excellent revival overcomes that obstacles, with ZJets and Sharks doing the damnedest to sound like dead ringers for the original Broadway cast. Only Paul Manuel as Tony dips into a Cockney accent, yet he has a great voice, better in fact than anyone who's sung Tony since Larry Kert fifty years ago. Tinuke Olafimihan is a light lyric soprano, a bit tremulous and unesteady as Maria, but no more so than Carol Lawrence. She, too, excels any rival in the various competitors to the original cast album. Thrown in a great Anita and fine orchestral work, and the result is a dark horse in the West Side Story race.

      I bought this recording after I had just completed a run of West Side Story, and was desperately looking for voices that recreated the magic of the show I had just performed in. Caroline O'Connor is a great Anita, but once more, this production has changed a lot of the original material in hopes, I think, of spicing things up and to present them in a new light, when the original material is flawless as it is. It is a new fresh sound, but nothing compared to the Original Broadway cast. And also, it seems that London productions always have a harder time with true New-York accents, or anything else that isn't British or Cockney. I wouldn't particularly recommend this recording, but it definitely is one of the better ones that was made of this fabulous show.
