5 out of 5 stars Bluegrass As It's Meant To Be Heard...Live!.......2007-06-03

Studio recordings never have the same energy as a live recording. So after four stellar albums, The Seldom Scene recorded their shows at the Cellar Door Dec. 27 and 28, before an appreciative hometown audience. The result is one of the finest albums of their storied career.

The band could have simply cherry picked highlights from their first four albums. Instead, over the course of 22 tracks and more than an hour of music, the audience is treated to no less than 18 songs previously not recorded by one of the best bluegrass bands of all time.

For the most part, the band keeps things fairly traditional--at least by Seldom Scene standards. The set opens with the classic "Doing My Time" and continues with songs by Bill Monroe (three in all), Carter Stanley, and Jimmie Martin. And while there is a hint of parody in their version of Martin's "Hit Parade of Love," it's obvious the sendup is done with affection for the material. Also, there are no fewer than four instrumentals--five, if you count the mostly instrumental "Panhandle Country." Especially enjoyable is hearing basist Tom Gray in the spotlight on "Grandfather's Clock."

The Seldom Scene, however, do not entirely abandon their progressive ways. [Listen to the end of "Panhandle Country" when one of the band members mutters "Look out, New Grass Revival."] They cover Bob Dylan's "Baby Blue." John Duffey takes the lead vocal on Tim Hardin's "If I Were a Carpenter." And they expand "Rider" (from ACT 3) to nearly seven minutes. All told, this is a welcome addition to the Seldome Scene catalog and one of the most influential bands in bluegrass. [Running Time - 66:53] VERY HIGHLY RECOMMENDED

5 out of 5 stars Classic Seldom Scene.......2002-01-15

One of their best. Traditional bluegrass with modern influences at its finest. Grateful Dead fans will absolutely love the version of Rider. This is from the original lineup of the 'Scene, with John Starling on vocals and guitar and Tom Gray on Bass.

5 out of 5 stars Good 'grass with a little acid.......2001-11-22

If you can accept urbanized bluegrass this is the ultimate CD. It's a long way from here to Ralph Stanley but the Seldom Scene impress with the quality of their music. This is a live album, but exceptionally well-recorded (especially since it was made about 1975). Every jack-hammer note of the banjo and painfully high pic of the mandolin comes through sharp, crisp, and clean. Although some may disagree, I enjoy the inane banter of the band and their weak attempts at humor. The SS even poke a little fun at the dead-serious bluegrass traditionalists.
The music is outstanding, especially the opening and closing numbers. The SS clown their way through "Doing my Time" but the harmonies and the instumental solos are of near unbeleivable qualtiy. And "Rider" a version of a Dead song, belongs among bluegrass's all time hits. Bob Dylan's "It's all over now, Baby Blue" is another standout. I guess I like the SS best when they're doing a 'grass version of a un-grass song.
One of the things I like is the exotic -- non country --sounds the SS sometimes get out of their instruments. Some of the notes they hit would be appropriate as back up music for "Star Wars" or a yoga class. You don't have to like country music or bluegrass to enjoy the Seldom Scene. They are quality musicians by the most exacting standards.

5 out of 5 stars Best of the Best.......2001-07-13

I own every Seldom Scene album that is in current release. I love all of them, but this one without any doubt is my favorite. I particularly enjoy the original lineup with John Duffey and John Starling providing most of the lead vocals. The live club recording is a refreshing departure from the standard studio recording. The vocal and instrumental range on this album is awesome. If you are interested in either Bluegrass or the Seldom Scene, buy this album. You won't be disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars Best SS I've heard.......2000-07-17

The feel of this album is unquestionably that of a live show by a band in its hayday. I spent some time getting frustrated because the group stopped to have fun in the middle of their brilliant jams, but I got over it. The music is so pure and tight that the live forum is obviously their only outlet for goofing off.

I have just about worn out the CD. Muddy Water, Fields have Turned Brown- they are as tight as seams on a submarine. Their Rider is the only version that compares to and exceeds the Dead. I own 4 of their albums. If I had to pick one, this would be it

5 out of 5 stars Excellent live CD..........2007-03-06

This disc had me right from the first song and didn't let up. As someone who has seen Richie Havens perform live this CD manages to capture the warmth and gentle spirit that Richie possesses and showcases his frenetic strumming style on the acoustic guitar. This CD was culled from two performances, one in 1970 at the Cellar Door in Washington D.C., and the other from 1972 at the Santa Monica Civic Center in California, and the liner notes explain that the previously released live version of "Here Comes The Sun" became a radio hit but the rest of the performance was shelved and not released until years later. Although the majority of the songs Richie plays on this disc were written by other songwriters (George Harrison, Stephen Stills, Bob Dylan, The Band, Fred Neil, and even one by Billie Holiday) this disc introduced me to Richie's own song "No More, No More", which I hadn't heard before and found to be very moving. There are several moments on this disc that are just too beautiful for words. Although the majority of the songs here are more low key and relaxed as opposed to a "Freedom" type rave up that didn't bother me one bit. The mellow nature of this disc really hits the spot every time I put it on, and as always Richie's voice is nothing short of phenomenal. The tracks where he talks to the audience also really reminded me of when I saw him live; he still does his humorous monologues at shows these days, and they always manage to make you smile while making you think. This CD really captures the strengths of Richie Havens as a performer and I would recommend it if you are a fan or are looking for an introduction to his music.

5 out of 5 stars Always welcome.......2006-02-18

I have an Internet-only radio station that plays this album. I also have these cuts on different music mixes I carry on CD and i-Pod and I never tire of the soft, gently explosive sound of this great musician.

While I was unable to see Richie "Live at the Cellar Door" in Washingon, DC, I did get to see him twice at the Birchmere in nearby Alexandria, VA. It was the first time in years my oldest son and I got excited about the same music.

Buy it because it sounds great or buy it because it has some wonderful human reflection, or buy it just because it brings on such sweet nostalgia, but buy it. You'll be glad you did.

One other thing, go to Richie Havens dot com and look at some of the wonderful artwork he has done. He also has lots of nice gear there, too.

All best.

5 out of 5 stars HAVENS!.......2005-10-28

I love this album, I've listened to it a thousand times. The music, the stories, his voice, his lyrics are special, they are unique, and fun. This album led me to see him perfom at the "Bottom Line" in the West Village with Tin Tin, and the performance we saw was nothing short of astounding. Live at the Cellar Door was of course recorded years ago, still the aura that Ritchie Havens gives off on record or in person is that of warmth, respect, love, friendship, and passion, what else is there?

1 out of 5 stars Avoid.......2003-07-30

I was expecting a tour d' force such as Mixed Bag. Not to be fulfilled. The songs are slowed down to the pace of dirges. Two tracks are wasted on 60's-esqu banter with the audience--once is enough, but after once, you'd rather have 2 more songs. Get a studio album. They are all great.

3 out of 5 stars In search of a classic Richie Havens live show.......2001-08-29

I love Richie Havens as a perfomer. However, I found his live releases to be pleasant, but infuriatingly unsatisfying. Havens performed at lot of classic shows in the late 60s, early 70s such as Woodstock(1969), Isle of Wight Festivals(69 & 70), Atlanta Pop Festival(1970), any Fillmore East show, etc. His classic strumming and poignant vocal power captured the spirit of the late sixties hippie rock generation. Unfortunately, Havens seemed to pass up the chance for the public to hear the showstoppers. This live album and ON STAGE (1972, currently not available on CD) is made up of mainly slow/moderate tempo tunes that really do not epitomize what Havens made famous. A lot of them are covers. Many are good versions, but they are not from classic shows.I really want a live release that is a complete show from a classic concert or venue. One radio interviewer a few years back asked Havens if he ever planned to release his Woodstck set in its entirety, but he avoided the question and changed the subject. Strange. CELLAR DOOR does have its moments, and is from 1970, a classic year, but the entire show should have been released to make it completely worthwhile.
