About the Artist
Robin Pearl's music is powered by her rich, bluesy voice, but she's not a blues singer. She grooved to the rhythm and soul of Detroit rock (Motown, Bob Seger) in her hometown of Midland, Michigan, but she's no straight-ahead rocker, either. And while she writes the songs she sings straight from the heart, she explodes the stereotype of terminally sincere singer-songwriters. She's drawn from myriad influences and challenges to develop a musical voice all her own.

The vivacious daughter of schoolteachers, Pearl grew up listening to pop (Aretha Franklin, Gladys Knight), country (Dolly Parton, Willie Nelson), and what she calls "Mom's music" (Simon & Garfunkle, Cat Stevens). She studied music at Central Michigan University. But at 19, she packed her life into her car and drove to Los Angeles--an experience she recounts in "Diner (co-written with Hollace Wood):"..."There's nothin' behind me but a dead end life/and I've already said goodbye/... There's a good life waiting for me." It's one of the 12 original tunes on her debut album. Wisteria, produced by Edward Tree (Corey Stevens, The Bum Steers) for her Caleigho Records label. Since moving to California, Pearl has worked hard to make the "good life" happen. Onstage and in studios, she's worked with some of the best players in L.A. It was while making the sometimes brutalizing rounds of showcases, club and coffeehouses that she found her sound and developed her lyrical voice. Now raising two children--son Cale, 8, and daughter Rileigh, 6--she says, "I write fact, fiction, sometimes bits of both; occasionally of the conflicts of two distinctly different roles as a woman--mother and artist".

These conflicts are thoughtfully, sometimes angrily presented in her dynamic music, which is by turns soulful, sensual, vulnerable, playful and raw. Capturing her vision on Wisteria is a crew of real musicians' musicians: Edward Tree, Taras Prodaniuk, Teresa James, David Raven, Billy Block, and the Texacali Horns (Joe Sublett and Darrell Leonard). One the radio-ready "Nobody Sees the Angel," Tree's swampy slide guitar answers the call of Pearl's crying vocal. The Texicali Horns pump some funky swing into "Myth in Blue". "Story" is an urgent musical summation of the hard-earned lessons that ultimately reinvigorated Pearl's determination to pursue her dreams. From the horn-driven passion of "Excusable Affair" to the pained "Compromise" and the full-throttle, open throated rocker "It sure Ain't Love," Wisteria presents the multi dimensional view of an independent woman striving to balance artistic ambition with the demands of life.

Call it acoustic rock, call it alternative soul, call it AAA--call it what you want. But listen. In a world that doesn't necessarily reward or even understand ethics and compassion, the open heart can't fail to be moved by on individual's powerful embrace of her vibrant art. Robin Pearl has a sweet grit and an incredible voice unlike any other you've heard.

4 out of 5 stars Great compilation - and that's just the first half........2005-09-14

I first got this on cassette in the summer of '94 and listened to it every day, drawn by its thematic range and compositional depth. And that was just side-one.

Elfman pioneered the sound that drives today's movie adaptations of comic-books and darker-themed children's stories. Side-One kicks things off with a rollicking, hyper-cartoonish theme from the first Pee-Wee movie - the one where Pee-Wee searches for his beloved bike. Elfman's theme contains layers of different rides - on tightropes, highways, in the middle of a NASCAR rally - which rudely yet melodically crash into each other.

The Batman entry actually contains several pieces - the opening credits, the extended sequence in the cathedral and the climax - which show Batman's darkened extreme at its "Frank Miller" best. (Dir. Tim Burton couldn't sustain the mood in the next sequel, and the franchise took a turn towards the camp of the TV series with the next 2 movies.)

The theme for "Dick Tracy" is perhaps the most romantic on this disc, a quality that surpasses the theme's comic-book origins, but ends on an ironic note that's pure Elfman.

"Beetlejuice" (opening & closing credits) gives Elfman's childish ID a chance to stretch its legs, or in this case, slam-dance.

"Nightbreed" is an enigma wrapped in a dark mystery, and that's just Elfman's score. Elfman's work on this movie is as good as the movie wasn't, having a more powerful narrative than the script - easily the best track on the entire disc, one likely to exceed the movie in its dose of chills.

"Darkman" doesn't quite rise to the occasion, though the score may be hobbled by the movie itself, which seldom surpassed one of the many "Batman" clones of the early 1990's. "Darkman" (the movie, I mean) excelled as a parody of many comicbook staples (the wronged hero, the relentless villain, the scientific breakthrough with just one flaw), but not enough to escape being largely anonymous. Within those constraints, it's still a moving if scary piece.

When is Elfman not like Elfman? When he was in the mid-late `80's and scored "Back to School" (A Rodney Dangerfield vehicle) and "Midnight Run". Horns in "School" bring it closer to Elfman's over-the-top style, while "Run" sounds like a love-theme for the run-down, out-of-the-way parts of America that seldom appear in Elfman-movies. "Run" is a fun score for a fun movie - it's nothing like Elfman's previous work but it perfectly captures the on-the-road-without-a-map craziness of the movie.

To this day, I don't know why I never ventured to Side-two, but it's irrelevant. Even half this disc is worth it

5 out of 5 stars The best of Elfman!!!.......2005-09-05

I was obsessed about getting this CD right from when I heard about it. I found it at the library and was so excited about it, and it didn't let me down. In fact, it was a lot better than I expected. It's a fun and creepy (strange mix, but it really works!) collection of Danny Elfman's film and television soundtracks. The first track, Pee Wee's Big Adventure, is probably my favorite. Also, I really like Batman and Wisdom. Batman is creepy and dark, and Wisdom is just weird, in the best possible way.
I'd recommend this to anyone who likes film music, or everyone who is even the tiniest bit an Elfman fan. It's amazing!

4 out of 5 stars Great Collection, A LIttle Too Eclectic.......2003-08-19

You should be able to tell from the movies and TV shows listed here whether or not you'd be interested in this collection. It's a little too eclectic for my tastes (hence only 4 stars) but better than volume 2. I think thatthe miscellaneous collected ites here along with the previously unreleased stuff should make this worth buying. Especially if you're a fan of Elfman's movie soundtrack work.

5 out of 5 stars What Great Music.......2003-05-11

I fell in love with the music of Danny Elfman when Beetlejuice came out. There was something different about the music that he made. When Edward Scissorhands, and then Nightmare Before Christmas - I knew this man was a musical master. Its the verbal form of surrealism.

5 out of 5 stars super.......2003-04-17

What a great CD. Danny's music is so original and inventive. this CD contains his pre 90's quirky, gothic music. it's all very well written and beautifully orchestrated. batman and darkman contain some really excellent long, dark, gothic cues that really take u away from reality. in my opinion no one, apart from howard shore, is as inventive and original as danny in the world of filmmusic. he far surpasses the repetitive works of williams or horner. buy this, and volume two, and keep supporting one of the greatest film composers of all time.ohh...and buy fellowship of the ring and two towers by howard shore....amazing work!

5 out of 5 stars Review(How original huh?).......2007-01-25

Personally, this is one of the absolute BEST soundtracks I have ever listened to. The music is calming, soothing, and truly wonderful. The music is so well put together and nicely coordinated and I feel like I am watching the movie again...it also makes great to read the Laura Ingalls Wilder books too. Try it...you might be suprised how well it fits. :)

5 out of 5 stars Music that transcends simple meaning..........2006-07-16

Mark Isham's score for the motion picture A River Runs Through It is one of the most memorable and emotionally captivating film scores of all time. The arrangements of strings, piano, woodwinds create a meditative and reflective range of music throughout the film capturing all the emotions of this powerful drama about an American family in rural Montana. It is at once deeply haunting, moving, nostalgic and sentimental and captures the innocence and beauty of nature and childhood, as well as darker themes of rebellion and tragedy. There is a profound sense of emotion that is embedded within the music that sweeps over me every time I hear it. A combination of happiness, sadness, excitement, and reflection. There is something simply sweeping and majestic within his music. I couldn't think of anything else that would better compliment the film. Highly recommended.

4 out of 5 stars An unfortunate CD release.......2006-07-24

While this 13-track original score is largely incomplete and (as many have commented) full of the more useless cues; stuff we could do without, there is a 34-track bootleg floating around. I don't know how to get a hold of it, but it's circulating through the internet, giving David Newman the true audio release he deserved for one of his best musical efforts.

1 out of 5 stars Pointless.......2005-10-06

Why have a soundtrack that has all of the songs people don't care about? Basically this cd has all the background music that you never notice and quite frankly don't care about. Most of you who want to buy this cd is the same reason why you would buy any other, because it has one or two (very rarely three) songs that you want to get. The song that you are probably looking for is when the three of them with the baby are walking to the peak (where they ride in the ice caves) togather. It's called "Send Me On My Way" by Rusted Root. Hope that helps

5 out of 5 stars I LOVE ICE AGE!!!!!!!!!!!!.......2004-07-30

I LOVE THIS MOVIE WITH A PASSION!!!! THE SOUND TRACK IS 2 TIMES AS GOOD!!!! SID STEALS THE WHOLE MOVIE, ALSO THE DODOS!!!!!!!!!!I LOOOOOVE ICE AGE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! AND YOU ALL SHOULD BUY IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

2 out of 5 stars Thanks.......2004-04-30

I would like to thank everyone for listing the song Send me on my way. I was specifically looking for this song and did expect it to be on the CD. So thank you all for looking out for the other people interested.

1 out of 5 stars Song not on CD.......2004-04-26

To those of you interested in this CD in lieu of finding the "songs with lyrics" in the movie ICE AGE, got bad news for you. They are NOT here! I really do hate it when a soundtrack is put out for a movie and they don't include the best or features songs in the movie. Anyway, the song that pretty much everyone wants when Manny, Sid, Diego and the baby are together and walking towards Half Peak is called "Send Me On My Way" by Rusted Root. It is on their latest album "When I Woke". Put Rusted Root in the Amazon search engine and you should find it. Hope this helps those looking for this song.

    2 out of 5 stars An over-rated single........2005-02-28

It would appear that this single is being grossly over-rated here. Four stars overall? Yes, the different versions of Who's Gonna Ride Your Wild Horses are pretty good, arguably better than the original, but the cover of Fortunate Son is without a doubt U2's worst cover ever. U2 have done some fantastic covers, most notably Dancing Barefoot, but Fortunate Son is a disaster. It sounds promising initially but Bono's vocals are terrible. Personally, I find Paint It Black to be enjoyable to listen to, but objectively, it's not a quality cover either.

    Only for the collectors.

5 out of 5 stars one of their best single releases.......2003-12-20

This has the definitive version of Who's Gonna Ride Your Wild Horses--far better than the album version. The guitar tracks are far more clear and the intro is much more accessible. Paint It Black and Fortunate Son are also great, and even though they are only covers they still sound fresh like you've never heard them before. If you are a U2 single collector, you know this is one of their best. This is a great supplement for fans of Achtung Baby.

    3 out of 5 stars A loss of emotion..........2003-09-15

'Who's Gonna Ride Your Wild Horses' is and always will be one of my favorite tracks on the Auchtung Baby album. It's very honest, and offset from what the band usually would sound like. With the ambience given off by the edge's guitar, the song builds and builds... until releasing at the emotional peak, as Bono cries the words "...don't you look back!"

However, in this single version (The Temple Bar Edit), that emotion is lost. There is no real peak to the song... the song is just lost in a wave of acoustic guitar and lighter drums. The original mood the album version had given off, is hopelessly lost - no more twisted pain, or agonizing guitar riffs, to make this song complete. I can't stand either of the single versions.

'Paint It Black': Great cover... rocking just as much now, as when the Stones played it.

'Fortunate Son': A soulful rendition of John Fogerty's song.

3 out of 5 stars "Well, you lied to me, 'cause I asked U2.".......2003-06-09

The single released for U2's "Who's Gonna Ride Your Wild Horses" doesn't actually contain the original version found on the ACHTUNG BABY album. Instead, we are treated to two edits/remixes and two covers. Here are some short comments on each of the tracks:

"Who's Gonna Ride Your Wild Horses (The Temple Bar Edit)" -- Structurally, this edit is similar to the original, album version. However, it forgoes a lot of the electronic noises in favor of a more straightforward guitar/piano sound. The album version works better alongside its ACHTUNG BABY companions, but this interpretation sounds better as a standalone song. This song isn't one that's overly powerful, but I find myself humming it for days afterwards. A nicely understated work.

"Paint It Black" -- A cover of the well-known Rolling Stones song. Comparisons to the original are unavoidable, and while this doesn't come close to achieving that power, it's an interesting version all the same. But Bono's vocals just don't have the same gravity as Mick Jagger's, and Edge isn't as forceful in his guitar playing as Keith Richards is. There's a reason why U2 isn't recognized as a cover band, although some of the stuff they do on this track isn't bad.

"Fortunate Son" -- A cover of the well-known Creedence Clearwater Revival song. Much more rhythmic than the original, and, again, not nearly as good. While CCR put a lot of passion and emotion into their song, this version just seems a bit limp and weightless. The female backing vocals are a nice touch, but just not enough to save this one. It's a pity, because I like some of the stuff they do on here. The guitar playing is pretty good, the rythmn section is putting out good beats, and I like the vocal track that Bono lays down. It ends up being far less than the sum of its parts, almost certainly because the original is just so familiar.

"Who's Gonna Ride Your Wild Horses (The Temple Bar Remix)" -- Virtually the same as the Temple Bar Edit version albeit slightly longer and with a few added synthesizers.

Not one of U2's strongest singles, this is primarily a curiosity for hardcore U2 fans. The different versions of the title track are interesting and worth a listen, while the other two covers are fairly forgettable.

    5 out of 5 stars BEST EVER!1.......2003-04-22

      Product Description

This is the first solo CD from Charlie Dominici. It is a completely acoustic concept album about a man who is taken from his home at a very early age and forced to train for a task that he has no prior knowledge of. He soon finds himself in a foreign country where he begins to blend in a little too well. He becomes attached to his new country and his new life when suddenly he is contacted by his former captors and told he is to do something terrible. In his research he finds the task that he is being told to do is much more sinister than he was led to believe. Now he is faced with the option of disobeying his captors and putting himself and his family at risk or following through with the plan that could destroy the world. This is a wild ride of music that is composed, played, sung and produced all by the artist Charlie Dominici.

5 out of 5 stars Charlie Dominici Creates a New Genre!.......2005-07-24

Simply put, Charlie Dominici has gone where no musician has gone before. To my knowledge there are no other acoustic solo artists that have created a bare bones concept album like this. It is rich with meaningful and sometimes politically charged lyrics and amazing acoustic guitar that sometimes sounds like Leo Kottke or John Fahey playing. Less is more... is the rule here. There are no real overdubs or "sweetening" as they say in the music business to cover up a lack of talent. No need for that here. Charlie is about to shock the music fans who know him from his days with Dream Theater. This album shows that whatever the DT fans might have thought about Charlie's abilities before, they are in for a treat (if the listener can be objective).Do not expect any cookie monster vocals or intense musical shredding here. This album is totally original and in todays music world, that is a fantastic feat in itself. That said, you put this CD in your player and off you go to a place where Charlie paints and sculpts and spins a musical tale that will leave you thinking about the meaning of your life while you try to shake off the chills and goosebumps! Buy it,and see!

      5 out of 5 stars Different....But Incredible...........2005-07-24

Big Dream theater fan here.Knowing that Charlie was the former singer of the band,I got the CD.The first couple of times I listened to it, I didnt really like it.But then I realized Charlie wasn`t a part of Dream Theater anymore, and I certainly didnt want to feel like he was trying to catch that dream theater sound after these years. So the more I listened to it, the more I liked it. It`s a very original album, incredible story, everytime I listen to it I catch something new in it.
Definitely worth the money and I cant wait to hear the end of the story!!!

      5 out of 5 stars Charlie is back...in a way you wouldn't expect........2005-07-20

After self imposed seclusion from the music scene, Charlie Dominici has returned in a way that has taken pretty much everyone by surprise.

It all started during the build up to the 15th anniversary of Dream Theater's When Dream and Day Unite album. Charlie was asked to participate in a one off reunion celebrating the release of the album. After the album was performed in its entirety by the current lineup, Charlie Dominici entered the stage for the two encores of To Live Forever and Metropolis (performed along with both James Labrie and former keyboardist Derek Sherinian).

After this event, Charlie realized how much he missed the music scene and plotted his "comeback." While Charlie likes and appreciates Dream Theater's music that he participated with, it was a lot different from his musical background. Therefore, his new CD has very little resemblance to what he was a part of with the world's best progressive metal band.

03 A Trilogy: Part One, first and foremost, is a completely acoustic album performed by Charlie and only Charlie. With the exception of a harmonica and some whistling, it is just Charlie and his guitar. I believe Charlie knew the comparison to his days in Dream Theater was inevitable so he made no attempt to match or recreate that sound in any way. Instead, he stripped the sound down completely, relying on his acoustic musicianship, his voice, and his storytelling ability.

The album tells the story about a boy who was stolen from his family and prepped from an early age to carry out what would be the world's worst terrorist attack. But living in his new home of the United States, he falls in love with the people and the land and struggles with his "duty" and whom he considers his real friends and family.

The songs at times resemble the feeling of a broadway musical and his voice has a warm tonality that compliments that. He uses a lower register than he did in his days with Dream Theater, which is much more natural for him.

His guitar playing is remarkable. Hes no shredder, but he does have an incredible acoustic style. His guitar melodies range from intense to serene and somewhat technical.

In the end, this album really has four things to look at: his voice, his lyrics, his guitar, and the songwriting as a whole. All of these elements are spectacular and create an interesting and enjoyable album.

For the hardcore Dream Theater fans, you must go into this album with an open mind. This has little to no resemblance of his days with DT. This much more resembles the type of music you would hear being performed at a coffee shop. Initimate, relaxed, and at times intense. It is meant to make you think and feel, and for that Charlie Dominici has accomplished an amazing feat.

He has two more CDs planned in which he has stated he might even put a full band together to accomplish. I think a lot of these songs would sound great with a full band so I look forward to his experimenting with that. As it stands though, what you have here is just outstanding and original. Charlie is back, indeed, and I can't wait to hear what he comes up with next.

      Album Description

An assortment of covers and enjoyable novelty tracks makes this One Way release from Jan & Dean (the first from 1963, the second from 1964) a solid entry in the label's continuing program to reissue various surf LPs. The first includes versions of the Beach Boys' 'Surfin'' and 'Surfin' Safari' plus covers of 'Walk Like a Man' and 'Rhythm of the Rain'. The second is less impressive, almost completely dominated by surf-and-sun tracks (plus 'Sidewalk Surfin').

      Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars You know we're havin' fun........2006-04-07

This CD features two Jan & Dean albums on one disc.

Jan & Dean Take Linda Surfin' is a typical for the early-'60s album, featuring one hit, "Linda", surrounded by cover versions of other people's hits (for that matter, "Linda" is a cover version of a hit song from 1947). This album is most notable for featuring Jan & Dean's first surf recordings, which are cover versions of the Beach Boys' first two singles (Brian Wilson can be heard singing harmony on these songs). The other cover songs are mostly okay, but pretty forgettable.

Ride the Wild Surf is from late in Jan & Dean's surf period. It features almost all original songs. Lots of fun songs about surfing and related subjects, including the hits "Ride the Wild Surf" and "Sidewalk Surfin'". This is one of Jan & Dean's best albums.

4 out of 5 stars AN EXCELLENT JAN AND DEAN DOUBLE ALBUM.GOOD SOUND AND FUN........2005-11-11

THIS ANOTHER JAN AND DEAN DOUBLE ALBUM,WITH EXCELLENT SOUND MASTERING.I HAVE PLAYED THIS ALBUM MANY TIMES,AND NEVER TIRE OF IT. I OWN AND HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS DISC.

      4 out of 5 stars A "Must Have!".......2000-02-22

If you are a Jan & Dean fan, you really must have this CD. "Take Linda Surfin" for those who have never heard it, is a very interesting album. There are many styles of music within it. A little bit of surf music, folk music, doo-wop, and other cool stuff, all together on one great album. Of course, the classic hit "Linda" is included, which I think is an awesome record! "Ride the Wild Surf" is also a great album! In this album, Jan & Dean give us what they are known best for... The Surf Sound. All the songs are surf songs. "Ride the Wild Surf" and "Sidewalk Surfin" are the big hits from the album, but all the songs are great surf recordings!

5 out of 5 stars Reissue of Two LP's.......1999-11-13

As the picture above shows, this CD is a reissue of two Jan & Dean LP's from the mid sixties. It's nice to have J & D's songs reissued as complete albums rather than the usual "best of" stuff.

The CD label is "One Way Records". I've never heard of them. The address is New York, so it does not appear to be an import.

The sound quality is as good as any Jan & Dean reissue I've ever heard, and I've heard a lot of them. Almost all songs are in flawless true stereo. Only track 18 is in simulated stereo, but also appeared that way on the original LP. Oh yea, the bonus track is also in simulated stereo, but hey, that wasn't part of the original LP's anyway. Also, the stereo is in the original "Visual Sound Stereo" as originally heard on the Liberty LP's. "Visual Sound Stereo" typically meant the main vocal was heard on one channel only instead of the middle as is typical today. Jan & Dean LP's were well known for this type of stereo mixing. And a thank you to One Way Records for not trying to remix the stereo. This is how they sounded on the original LP's and that's the way it should be kept, end of debate.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent; get it........2002-01-01

Not only a good intro to the dBs, it's a great disc from start to finish.

5 out of 5 stars A band you should know.......2001-03-16

My feeling about reissues and anthologies is: anything to get the band back in front of the past and present and future fans. I'll echo everything the other reviewers have said. A tremendous and tragically neglected band. I will add a slight observation. Whether you like the first couple of albums or the albums that followed those will largely depend on how you feel about Chris STamey versus Peter Holsapple. I liked Chris Stamey but utterly loved Peter Holsapple. So, for me, the two albums that followed the first two (i.e., the albums after Stamey left and Holsapple became the sole songwriter) were the better albums. I would also like to strongly disagree with the first reviewer, for whom THE SOUND OF MUSIC is their best album. I vastly prefer LIKE THIS to any other dB's album. Just one great pop song after another, including my two favorite dB's song s("Lonely Is (As Lonely Does" and "Love is for Lovers") and their lone hit ("A Spy In the House of Love"--though it was a hit for another band, and not the dB's).

5 out of 5 stars They've really got to get back in print.......2000-09-27

Yeah, yeah; this disc is swell, but listen; there is another db's disc called The Sound of Music, and it is just freaking fabulous, and it is just freaking out-of-print. One of the best records ever. It's just a shame that so much of their catalog is currently unavailable. Somebody! Help!

5 out of 5 stars Excellent even on its own.......2000-01-29

I have to disagree slightly with the first reviewer: this CD was the first dB's music I ever heard, and I loved it. So I don't think the listener will be lost without the studio albums. Of course it helps to know what the standout tracks are--I recommend starting with my favorite, track 23, The Death Of Rock, and track 26, Spy in the House of Love. Then listen to tracks 13-20 straight through, all of them are great. The other tracks I put on my mix tape were 4, 10, 11.

I'd say 13 great tracks on a grab-bag CD like this qualifies as 5-star material. One more comment on the dB's: the demo version of Spy in the House of Love on this CD is *way better* than the studio version on the Like This album. For some reason that whole album was produced in the manner of cheesy mid-80s Top-40 pop, while the Sound of Music album is great, sounding like the jangly pop made famous by early REM. But I digress.

Ride The Wild Tom Tom is a great CD.

4 out of 5 stars Viva La dB's!.......1998-11-05

It's too bad you almost already have to know who the dB's were before you dig into this disc of seminal material culled from demos and rehearsals referred to as the "great, lost dB's album". This is one of those packages that Rhino (as always) has done a great job on, but like the dB's main influence, Big Star-if you go out and get the Chris Bell Solo album or 3rd/Sister Lovers before you've heard the studio albums that established them, you're kinda lost without it. This is also a drag, because as far as I know, the super albums that the dB's made for Albion/CBS ('Stands for Decibels' and 'repercussions')and re-issued by IRS in the early part of the 90's are, again out of print. Please, do yourself a favor if you love good pop music and are interested in a band whose influence can be heard in bands ranging from R.E.M. to They Might Be Giants, bug your local record store for those first two albums. Better yet, write to Rhino for info on if they will also re-issue them, in which case this collection here makes a nift-o addition.
