I purchased this CD as a Christmas gift for my husband who is a die-hard Tennessee fan and has been for 20+ years. After listening to it, he said, "Ah, it's okay. Rocky Top isn't right." It's something to add to a collection, but don't be counting on much use of it.

    5 out of 5 stars Best Bluegrass.......2007-05-11

The Osborne Brothers!!?? What can one say about them. They are one of the very best of the Bluegrass groups. I've been listening to them for many years. Bobby has that beautiful voice and picks that mandolin like a master. And Sonny - a master on the banjo. I'm so glad I have their music in my library. They can't last forever, but their music will. (I mean, I'm about their age, and so I know.)

5 out of 5 stars The Osborne Brothers are one of the best. .......2006-04-23

I only listen to the older singers 50's-70's I hate today's country music. I love the legends from the era I mentioned above and I never listen to the radio anymore. So when I received this cd I was very pleased. They are the best at what they do and if you are a fan of this group or your like me who hates today's music you'll love this cd. I recommend this cd and check out their other albums. If you have time check out the Stanley Brothers,Jimmy Martin,Grandpa Jones,Flatt & Scruggs, and Stringbean. They are all my favorites you won't be disappointed trust me. Long Live bluegrass and tradition.

5 out of 5 stars Best of the Best.......2005-09-10

If the music of this album doesn't warm your heart, bring a smile to your face, and get your toes a-tapping, then brother, you're dead. There is no real accurate way to describe the Osborne Brothers, other than to say, they are one-of-a-kind. All of their music, not just those numbers found on this album, could never really be called standard/traditional Bluegrass. The songs chosen for this album are all great, and I couldn't imagine any other selections improving the album. This is one of those discs that will remain in you player. A+

4 out of 5 stars The real deal.......2002-04-30

Oh what a discovery, although I wish it was better. These are the actual original, one of a kind, best known recordings of these songs. But the bad news, no notes, song info, recording dates, nothing. For now (4/30/02) this is the only u.s. release of these songs. Stay away from the CMH releases, they aren't bad, but they pass off rerecordings for the originals, and don't bother to tell you, like it is no big deal. This is classic music, and for a budget price you had might as well get it until something better comes out.

5 out of 5 stars The Greatest of the Bluegrass bands, Good Country........1998-09-06

    9/5/1998

This album is Country Blue Grass, not just Bluegrass Music. The Osborne Brothers were the only ones who ever did a combination of regular Country and Bluegrass Music. They were and still are, originals.

"Rockytop," was the most Popular of all Bluegrass music played in the 1960s. Everyone in bars, or anywhere else where music was played live, performed "Rockytop," after hearing the Osborne Brothers recording of this wonderful song written by one of the Geniuses in Country Music, Boudleaux Bryant. This is a very upbeat and happy sounding piece of non-Traditional Bluegrass music.

Boudleaux Bryant was an original when it comes to song writing. His abilities knew no boundaries for he incorporated anything, which sounded good in the songs he wrote. The Osborne Brothers were originals I that they would not let Tradition bind them in any way.

Sonny Osborne is the only 5 string Banjo Player who would go out of the Scruggs style and play even blues licks in the Recordings of the Country Bluegrass which were recorded by the Osborne Brothers. Though Sonny Osborne never had the Speed of Scruggs, or Douglas Dillard, on 5 String, his originality, his creativity, was far greater than either of these most popular 5 string banjo players who were big in the 1960s. Bill Monroe employed Sonny Osborne as a 5-string player. This speaks of his great quality of music, which Sonny Osborne performed. But his picking speaks louder than having ever played with Bill Monroe.

The Vocal harmonies are great on this album, and every album that the Osborne Brothers ever recorded. They were one of my favorites in the 1960s. I bought many of their albums. I'm so glad that amazon.com has made their great recordings available on the Internet. The two imports boxed sets, which cost $104.00 each, covers their recordings from 1956 to 1974. Both sets are no doubt great. However, it took the Osborne Brothers near 15 years to make it big I recordings. Their earlier recordings should be quite good, and very interesting. Bobby Osborne told me that his wife almost left him in those first 15 years After they made it big around 1968, she was happy he had stayed and made it. This is not an uncommon story from musicians. It does take staying power to make it, persistence. Never quitting, no matter what, not even if the going is rough for a long, long, time.

Their Recordings were masterpieces or beauty and originality. Originality of the magnitude of the Osborne Brothers seldom comes along in any genre of commercial music.

Great cuts on this CD are:

    1. Roll Muddy River 2. Ruby Are You Mad At Your Man 3. Kind Of Woman I Got, The 6. Rocky Top 8. Up This Hill And Down

This album is a real bargain at $5.37. I almost can't believe the low price from Amazon.com.

If the Osborne Brothers had been managed by someone like Colonel Tom Parker, Elvis's manager, they would be much more remembered than they now are. The Recordings of this famous brothers team was played on Country Music Radio, where Blue Grass is seldom heard.

The Review from Music Hound Country, used by amazon.com, says that the Osborne Brothers Band was formed in 1953. So the great singing and playing brothers have been earning a living together for 45 years now. That is quite a record. They are still appearing on the Nashville Network.

I saw the Osborne Brothers in Person many times in the late 1960s, and early 1970s. Where they were playing, I always tried to be. They were one of my very favorite groups.

Bobby, though the oldest of the two brothers, appeared younger in looks, and demeanor. Sonny seemed very aggressive to me, and I thought he was most likely the leader in the Group. I had the pleasure of sitting and talking with these two great musicians. They came to my table, during a break, while appearing at the Black Poodle, in Nashville's Printer's Alley. It was a most enjoyable experience I shall never forget.

If you like Bluegrass, Country, or just good music, get this album.

    Album Description

Recorded Live in 1989, this CD/DVD set documents the Osborne Brothers performance in Streekermoor, Germany. Only minimal overdubs and editing were possible, however, after two years of remastering efforts by Sonny Osborne and mastering engineer John Eberle, the final product has been vastly improved over the original master tapes. At the time the Brothers were touring with Bill Monroe and the Bluegrass Boys. The liner notes describe in detail some of the experiences of touring with Monroe as well as the arduous mastering process. Live in Germany is a must-have recording for fans as it shows the Osborne Brothers at their peak and is one of the only live recordings available.

4 out of 5 stars The Osbornes having fun with their music in Germany in July, 1989.......2007-04-04

A very good value, this is actually a 2-CD plus DVD set (3 discs total). Kentuckian Bobby Osborne began his music career in 1949 with The Lonesome Pine Fiddlers. Sonny Osborne joined the group a year later at age thirteen. When The Osborne Brothers played Streekermoor, Germany on July 30, 1989, they had already been members of the Grand Ole Opry for 25 years and "Rocky Top" had been the designated state song of Tennessee for five years. Thus, these legendary bluegrass musicians were ambassadors for the genre, and they were greeted in the small venue on a rainy Sunday night by an extremely friendly and appreciative crowd. Along with Bill Monroe and the Blue Grass Boys, the band had been touring throughout Europe. The Saturday night before this show they had played Switzerland, and then a 600-mile drive was required to reach this engagement in Germany. The CD jacket includes some interesting anecdotes and recollections such as Sonny's and Bobby's memories of traveling with Monroe.

At the time, the Osbornes' band also included Terry Eldredge (guitar, vocals), Terry Smith (bass), and Steve Thomas (fiddle). Thomas, Eldredge and Smith would've joined up with them about 1988, a year before this tour. From Indiana, Terry Eldredge had previously played with Lonzo & Oscar, and he was appearing on the Grand Ole Opry before he was even old enough to vote. Terry's tenure with The Osborne Brothers spanned the period from 1988-2000. He'd began with them as their bass player but switched to guitar when Terry Smith joined up. The 1981 Virginia State Fiddle Champ Steve Thomas had previously played with Del McCoury's Dixie Pals, Jim & Jesse, Lost & Found, and The Whites. He was with The Osborne Brothers from 1988-91. Besides hearing all their classic favorites like Kentucky, Listening to the Rain, Georgia Mules and Country Boys, Midnight Flyer, Tennessee Hound Dog, and Rocky Top, the show offers a number of special treats for fans. I especially enjoyed twin fiddles (Sonny and Steve) on "Your Love is Like a Flower," an 8-minute jamgrass version of "Nine Pound Hammer," Terry Smith's lead vocals on "Blue Ridge Cabin Home," and Terry Eldredge's lead vocals on three numbers (Muddy Bottom, If I Should Wander Back, Listening to the Rain).

In 2004, the audio and video for the 1989 show were brought to the attention of Sonny Osborne and the owner of the Pinecastle label, Tom Riggs. Rather than allow the show to be sold to the Bear Family label and put out without editing and mastering, Sonny and Tom decided to work with the raw products that had been recorded on a one-track tape machine and grainy video camera. Considerable work was needed to make this 2-CD and DVD set ready for marketing. While it still leaves a little to be desired, kudos to all those involved (like John Eberle who did the mastering) to make this a viable product. Charlie Cushman and Terry Smith overdubbed rhythm guitar and bass. Fiddler Glen Duncan was called in to fix a spot in "Nearer My God To Thee." You get the idea. Unfortunately, it doesn't look like much could be done with the video, but it still captures the energy and excitement of a live Osborne Brothers show. Although the liner notes only indicate that there are ten cuts on the DVD, it actually has 30 tracks with almost all of the songs included. I'm not sure why there is this discrepancy between the CD jacket and actual video. The DVD even includes some songs that aren't listed on the CDs such as Nine Pound Hammer, Say Ol' Man, My Favorite Memory, and Rock of Ages.

Sonny's liner notes state "that this live show is so typical...we always tried to have fun with our music...enjoy ourselves and one another." I understand that this is just the first of several unreleased Osborne Brothers recordings that Pinecastle will put out in the future. I certainly look forward to seeing and hearing what else they find in the archives. (Joe Ross, staff writer, Bluegrass Now)

5 out of 5 stars Don't be fooled by the price!.......2001-04-28

It may be bargain-basement priced and only 27 minutes long, but this is absolutely top-quality Osborne Brothers, featuring their patented harmony with Bobby's piercing lead on top and Sonny's warm low tenor. The instrumental accompanyment is understated as appropriate for gospel: we are meant to concentrate on the words. Sound quality is first-rate MCA Nashville. "Medals for Mothers" is one of their all-time favourites among true country-music audiences. There's a nice bluegrass treatments of "Light at the River"; and what more can you say about "How Great Thou Art" and "What a Friend...". Warhorses all, but these are the definitive versions. Too bad that some idiot at MCA put "Will You Be Loving Another Man" here! You won't regret spending your $.

4 out of 5 stars These Gospel songs are great, but............2000-03-24

These gospel songs are some of the best of all time. I remember when I was just a child, we had an 8 Trrack tape (telling my age here) and it had many of these songs on it. This is the ultimate version of "How Great Thou Art", and I always loved "Light At The River". "Medals For Mothers" is a moving beautiful song about a mother who has gone on to be with Jesus. It says "I dreamed Mother walked up the heavenly stairs and medals for mothers were given up there" and one line in the chorus that always gets me a little choked up says "If there's medals for mothers, Mamma you'll win every one". This song itself is worth buying the CD. The only thing that bothers me is why in the world would they put "Will You Be Loving Another Man" on a Gospel CD? While it is a great toe tapper of a Bluegrass song, it doesn't belong here.

5 out of 5 stars Some of the finest bluegrass gospels available!.......1998-08-23

The wonderful solo's and close harmony of the Osborne Brothers applied to some of the greatest gospels ever written. Spell binding for fans of bluegrass gospels!

    1 out of 5 stars Why?.......2004-02-28

They've butchered a favorite. I've heard better versions of Rocky Top performed by 8 year olds at Silver Dollar City.

5 out of 5 stars The Quintessential Rocky Top!!!.......2003-12-01

This is the quintessential *Rocky Top* that you'll hear blaring out of car and dorm windows all over The Hill on game day! The one bad rating by a reviewer here reminds me of the night the Vols defeated Florida and the goalpost came down with the CBS camera still attached and was carried away by a massive throng of Orange Faithful. According to a report in the Knoxville newspaper, a desperate cameraman approached a police officer and asked him to help secure the camera. The police officer, eyeing the *Host of Volunteers* numbering hundreds, yea, thousands, ushering away the post and camera, simply replied, "You a yankee, ain't ye?" Buy this one, play it Loud, and let your Bluetick howl along!

1 out of 5 stars Loathsome Remix of a Great Song.......2003-10-04

If you like WWE professional wrestling and/or the Hank Williams Jr. type of music (especially his Monday Night Football theme music), then you will love this CD. For the rest of us, this must be one of the worst corruptions of a dearly loved song, and certainly the worst aberration of one of the greatest bluegrass songs of all time. The remix versions are truly offensive and each evoke that feeling of loathing that revolts and sickens the senses. If you like NASCAR, then this might well be the CD for you, but the rest of the sane world will reject this musical abomination. Shame on the Vols for perpetuating the destruction of such a wonderful song!

The only saving grace is that the original version of the song is on the CD-- but I wouldn't suggest buying it only for that or else you show that you support the remix versions! Go and seek a CD by the Osborne Brothers so that you may have the original version of Rocky Top as well as many of the other great songs by these wonderful and talented performers!

    5 out of 5 stars A MUST-have for any VOL fan!!!.......1999-07-20

If you are a Tennessee Volunteer fan, you must have this CD. It has 4 versions, and all 4 are unique and really awesome!!

5 out of 5 stars Whole lotta fun!!!.......1999-05-02

Big-time Tennessee Vols fan. Played the club version at my daughter's wedding and the whole crowd lit up! A favorite CD of mine and great value for the money.

5 out of 5 stars History in a box set.......2007-01-19

A previous reviewer mentioned the relationship between Martin and the Brothers Osborne. Jimmy made them household names around Detroit, Dayton and Toledo in the early fifties. Their harmony was tighter than the bark on a beech tree. Martin wanted to stay in the tradition of his peers (Monroe, Flatt & Scruggs, the Stanleys, etc) however. Bobby and Sonny soon felt stifiled creatively and wanted to experiment. Hence they split from Martin in the mid-fifties but not before picking up fellow Dayton-ite legend Red Allen. They took their act (and new direction) to Nashville where they quickly secured a contract with MGM. Those cuts can be heard on the 56-68 box set.

Chronologicaly speaking, if one were to listen to the Decca cuts the Osborne's did with Martin, then the MGM recordings with Allen one could hear the ideas that were forming. By the time the Brothers signed on with Decca/MCA in their own right, a new standard was being set. Had it not been for the guts of Bobby and Sonny to push the envelope of the traditional bluegrass sound we would likely have never had The Country Gentlemen, New Grass Revival or even the Seldom Scene. The Osbornes were decades ahead of their time. This box set is but a sample of their overall influence.

5 out of 5 stars You won't hear anything like this again.......2006-06-25

This second and final collection of the Brother's relationship with Decca/MCA opens with the boys, after securing a hit with ROCKY TOP, being able to record a couple of projects dear to their hearts. The first six titles were recorded to honor their mentors, Lester, Earl, and Monroe. The next group comprises the Favorite Hymns album. After these two, albeit great, diversions, they again resumed with their signature sound.

During this period, late 1968 through 1970, all the elements came together for what is, in this reviewer's opinion, the absolute peak of their achievements and the genre itself. The combination of the Brother's pickin' and singin' abilities, the music of the Nashville session players, and the production elements (studio, engineering, A&R), and RISK, was at levels never to seen again. (YES, there are great singers and players today, and YES, sound quality is far better today, and YES, there are far better songs today, but to have all the elements come together as it did here? NO--that won't happen again)

After this peak, the quality remained high throughout the collection, although toward the end, one senses a "tiring" of the big experiment with some titles. Changing times brought an end to the marriage between the Brothers and MCA, however it did not occur without some excitement. "Don't Let Smokey Mountain Smoke Get In Your Eyes" was climbing the charts when the relationship ended, but the single vanished from the airwaves (amazingly) when the contract ended.

In late 1974, the Osborne Brothers removed the pickups from their instruments, left the amps and drums at home, and went back to traveling as a 4-piece band. They would continue to record for another thirty years, but the marriage with "Nashville" and that racket was essentially over.

There is one black hole with this collection: Seven songs exist that have never been released (from 1972-1974). Unfortunately the world will likely never hear them as they are sitting on a SINGLE 32 year-old, 2-inch reel of tape at an undisclosed location (Hint: It's not a salt mine). Sadly, by the time someone desires to make these public, the music will probably be unretrievable.

    5 out of 5 stars The Best Country/Bluegrass Ever.......2005-05-16

If you look at the picture of the boys on the boxed set with their coal miner jackets on out on the farm, you can immediately get the proper feel for this collection: stone- cold, no b.s. country and bluegrass. This is the real thing. There has never been, or ever will be a better country singer than Bobby Osborne. Even at 70 years old, he could lay waste to these new fellows. And that banjo of Sonny's, absolutely masterful.

This boxed has plenty of bluegrass, but, also, this was their period of more commercial endeavours and this set is filled with some amazing pop- country that is similar to some other great artists produced in Nashville at the time (think Jim Reeves, Ray Price, even Loretta and Conway). The Osborne Brothers twang mixed with a "pop" feel is some of the finest country music ever made. I suggest "Georgia Pineywoods","Beneath Still Waters", "Cut The Cornbread", and "Beneath Still Waters", all full of lush orchestration to go along with that high lonesome tenor and thousand mile an hour banjo.

The Osborne Brothers are the genuine article. I hope that with the advent of satellite and internet radio that there becomes a new venue to hear the awesome, eternal sound of these fellows. I would urge any potential customers to buy this set now, don't worry about particulars. I know- I bought it about six years ago and it's the crown jewel of my cd collection. God Bless you Sonny and Bobby.

5 out of 5 stars Sonny and Bob - still the Best !.......2005-01-05

Not many people want to talk about the fact that earlr in their career the Osbornes were joined by no other then Mr.Bluegrass himself, Jimmy Martin. Back then they were known as Jimmy Martin and the Osborne Bros. I don't know if it's Jimmy's drinking and hell raising that a lot of artists don't want to give him his dues but I always knew he did a tremendous amoumt for Bluegrass! When you listen to Jimmy talk he is very fond of those early days with the Osbornes. Back to this box set: First I purchased the 56-68 set, liked it so much that I also got the 68-74 set from my wife for a Christmas present. As a former reviewer wrote" ther are no bad songs" and he is right. All this stuff is great from Ruby to Tennessee Hounddog you can't go work. Of course this is real Country Bluegrass and not for everyone. If you think that Country Music is watching some CMT video with a B-Girl Blonde showing her belly button and belting out some off the wall ,half baked Hillbilly modern lyrics then this set is NOT for you!
    Enjoy! JFK

5 out of 5 stars Own a piece of history.......2004-11-09

The sticker price on this set may make you choke up a voice-box, but the truth is that this comprehensive set includes 8 albums worth of music, and it's all goooooood. I don't mean a little bit good, I mean REAL goooooood.

If you have to ask "who are the Osborne Brothers" this set is maybe not for you, but here's a bit of history. Sonny and Bobby Osborne grew up in Bluegrass country. When tenor singing, mandolin playing Bobby went off to the Korean war Sonny was hired as a teenager to play banjo with none other than the master tenor-singing mandolin player: Bill Monroe. When Bobby returned he and Sonny formed a partnership that has made them Bluegrass Royalty over the last 40 + years. The format of the band has changed little. There are a few devastatingly effective essential components of the OB sound: Bobby sings a wonderfully clear tenor with a Pavorotti-like range (who knows how many "high B's" he's sung since the late 60s with only their Zillion performances of their mega-hit "Rocky Top". Bobby also plays competent mandolin. Sonny sings the harmony part beneath Bobby and over these decades has played some of the most innovative (and always appropriate....) banjo ever heard. The vocals are always rounded out by a guitarist with a fine voice, and over the years that person has included legends like Mac Wiseman, Red Allen, Jimmy Martin then in later years sidemen of remarkable ability like Dale Sledd and Paul Brewster (currently singing that wonderful high harmony to Ricky Skaggs.)

Besides the required bass playing the Osborne's have experimented over the years with things like "plugged in" instruments and percussion. (Anathema to bluegrass purists.) Their recordings have been augmented with piano, steel guitar and fiddle.

All that being said: These recordings are Bluegrass History 101. Classics like Molly and Tenbrooks are mixed in with innovative tunes like "Fastest Grass Alive". Crowd favorites like "Ruby" are here too. You can read the cuts yourself, but it's worth noting that the albums represented are presented in chronologic order - it would be like putting 8 or 9 CDs on in a row.

Essential for the OB collector, but if there were no other place to acquire it - I'd have bought it just to get their wonderful recording of "Midnight Flyer".
