The key to the strengths and the weaknesses of Best of Roger Miller is in its subtitle: His Greatest Songs. No question, Miller's "King of the Road" and "Dang Me" were among the most innovative and entertaining songs in country music history, and his "Husbands and Wives" among the most moving. But while this set includes many of his greatest songs, they are here in rerecorded versions only, and though faithful to the original arrangements, they also lack the madcap punch and free-swinging acoustic rhythms of his mid-'60s radio hits. Which is just to say that this collection is certainly enjoyable but most likely for Roger Miller completists only. --David Cantwell

5 out of 5 stars A Great CD.......2005-09-23

My dad was a Roger Miller fan, I have been for 40+ years and now my 12 year old daughter is a huge fan. It says a lot for music when it can appeal to such a broad spectrum across the generations. Thanks Roger for the great music.

5 out of 5 stars England swings with the king of the road.......2005-03-15

Roger Miller first made his mark as a songwriter when Andy Williams recorded his song, In the summertime. As a singer, his earliest successes were with novelty songs like Dang me.

When Roger started writing more serious songs, he really hit the jackpot. The song he is best remembered for, King of the road, describes a man who needs somewhere to sleep overnight. He hasn't got any money but he is willing to do two hours' work to pay for his bed. Another of his classic songs, England swings, describes his image of London as he saw it in the sixties. I don't think London was really as he describes it even then but it's a great song. Walking in the sunshine is another joyful song. Contrast those songs with Husbands and wives, a very sad song about marital problems.

Having been grateful to others who recorded his songs while he was struggling, Roger did his bit for those that followed. He helped Kris Kristofferson by being the first singer to record Me and Bobby McGee, a song that has since become a country standard but also made the pop charts when covered by Janis Joplin. He also recorded Little green apples, written by Bobby Russell.

Roger had five hits on the British pop charts (King of the road - a number one hit, Engine engine number nine, Kansas city star, England swings and Little green apples). He had an even greater number of hits on the American pop charts and more still on the country charts.

This compilation of Roger's music contains all his essential hits, together with covers of other classic songs. Although the best single CD of his music is the fill priced compilation, All time greatest hits, this budget collection will suffice for most people.

NOTE - this review is linked to more than one Roger Miller compilation. My review refers to the British release on the Spectrum label.

3 out of 5 stars Not the original recordings.......2000-08-02

It's okay, but I would have preferred the originals. My fault because I neglected to listen to the samples.

5 out of 5 stars Good compilation.......2005-09-17

Roger Miller was one helluva songwriter and thank God he came on the scene in the 60's. With the overblown Nashville Sound, the orchestral interludes and banshee shrill wailing in the background of every pop-country artist of that era, Roger Miller was a breath of fresh air. This is one of the better "Best of..." albums, and I'm a fan of the 20th Century Masters Series of Country Releases. The recordings are clear, original, and will bring a smile to your face. But, like most of the other reviewers, I do believe "Little Green Apples" should've been included. Good album that will bring back many memories.

2 out of 5 stars Disappointing 1-disc collection.......2005-02-26

I found this collection to be very disappointing in that it's 100% mono. One can argue that in some cases, the mono mix sounds more like the original hit song as heard in the mid-1960s, but to me, several of the Roger Miller hits are better in stereo (particularly "England Swings" and "Little Green Apples").

Also, Miller only had 12 Top 40 American hits, but this collection omits two -- "Walkin' in the Sunshine" and "Little Green Apples" -- and replaces them with relatively-minor songs like "Atta Boy Girl" and "In the Summertime."

You gotta wonder who is handling Mercury's reissue department these days. Instead of this collection, my advice is that you find the previous Mercury collections "The Best of Roger Miller - Vol. 1: Country Tunesmith" and "The Best of Roger Miller - Vol. 2: King of the Road," which are far superior. Most of their tracks are in stereo, too.

5 out of 5 stars Country's Clown Prince represented well.......2005-02-19

I have to say, this CD was part of probably my most eclectic single record-buying purchase ever a few days ago. I picked up Roger Miller's best along with "American Idiot" by Green Day and "The Dock of The Bay" by Otis Redding (both of which I will review seperately next week). I didn't quite know what to expect when I picked this up, but it's been a fun addition to my burgeoning record collection.

Roger Miller first came to fame in the mid-Sixties, when he beat out (among others) the Beatles for a record-breaking eight times at the Grammys. I was aware of "King of The Road" (his most famous hit), but after viewing some various programs on CMT which mentioned his other songs, I became intrigued by the man. What was this song "Chug-a-Lug", anyway? Why had I never heard of it, or "Dang Me" for that matter?

This CD is a perfect introduction to anyone equally curious about the Clown Prince of country music, who was more gifted than may first appear. Starting off with the immortal "King", the collection segues into a selection of Miller's best-known tunes (The aforementioned "Dang Me" and "Chug", along with "England Swingin", "In The Summertime", "Kansas City Star"), all of which serve to highlight his great songwriting and unique (to say the least) vocalizing.

Listening to this collection, you wish more artists in contemporary country did as well, and took Miller's light-hearted approach to heart. In these days of slickly produced generic "country pop" crap that seems aimed at stirring the neanderthalic patriotism of Red State America without offering any of the sin or storytelling of old-school country, Roger Miller is a breathe of fresh air from an earlier time. I highly recommend this as a beginner's disc, like it was for me.

5 out of 5 stars An Old Favorite Who Ages Well.......2002-10-14

The late Roger Miller was one of the earliest country artists I enjoyed, back more years than I like to think about. This CD includes all the songs that appeared on my original vinyl of his hits. From the thoughtful ("Husbands and Wives") to the chillingly sad ("One Dyin' and a Buryin'") to Miller's specialty, novelty classics like "Dang Me," "Kansas City Star," and "You Can't Roller Skate in a Buffalo Herd," they're all here. And the remaster captures his unique Fort Worth voice and styling faultlessly. If you plan to buy only one Miller retrospective, this should be it. (And it's reasonably priced, too!)

4 out of 5 stars Best "Best of" yet!.......2000-07-07

This is the best 1 CD collection that I've seen so far from Roger Miller, since my old RM's Greatest Hits album on Smash Records. Its got the funny ones ("Dang Me, Can't Roller Skate in a Buffalo Herd") and the mid tempo swingers ("England Swings, Engine, Engine #9) and my favorite, "One Dying & A Burying." This to me is pure American music, country based, with a good pop sensibility. A great collection of songs that doesn't stay out of rotation very long!

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding Collection of Love Songs.......2007-06-22

I have to quickly disagree with those who are looking for more songs crammed in to what is such a breathtaking album of Broadway love songs. The rendition of the songs on this album and the Broadway singers selected for each piece, just are so beautifully recorded and make chills go through me. Whoever created this album, knew exactly what they were doing. This CD is full of nostalgia and artists who know how a song should be sung. They are certainly not making noise as on some Broadway CD's, but they have created an album that will go down in history for some of us who have longed to see such muscials come back to life in a way....that sadly has become a memory.

3 out of 5 stars It is in need of 1 more musical........2005-05-29

I think they need to consider putting one more musical on this CD. This musical would have to be Wicked. What about As Long As Your Mine (from Wicked of course)? I think I would like this CD better if they could put Wicked on it. But of course this may not be true for everyone because obviously my favorite musical of all time is Wicked.

1 out of 5 stars Not enough songs..........2004-10-20

Okay, so I have yet to hear this CD but already I have a quip: Why are there only 16 songs on this CD when the original Broadway's Greatest Love Songs had 20. They're cheating customers out of 4 songs! Also, why doesn't this include any songs from Aida, Triumph of Love, Beauty and the Beast, R&H's Cinderella, The Lion King, or Wicked! And please, "Our Last Summer" from Mamma Mia? Don't get me wrong, I love Mamma Mia, but that is NOT a love song.

      Customer Reviews:

      2 out of 5 stars Disappointing.......2007-02-06

This recording is at a slower tempo than his hit recordings, and I didn't like it.

1 out of 5 stars Nice collection, not origonal recordings.......2006-07-02

This was everything I could remember and a few I forgot by Roger Miller and although the recordings are really good they are not the single 45 versions I remember. In most cases they are better recordings, but just not the same.

5 out of 5 stars Certainly one of the better Roger Miller hits collections.......2004-07-06

The first thing you need to know is that your music library needs to have at least two Roger Miller CDs in it. First, you need to have a hits collection of his work from the Sixties. The hits collection is required to have "King of the Road," "Dang Me," "You Can't Roller Skate in a Buffalo Herd," "Do-Wacka-Do," and "England Swings." Almost all of the hits collections are solid on that score, as is this one. With 30 tracks it would be hard for it not to be one of the better Roger Miller hits collections that you are going to come across.

Obviously Roger Miller is remember for his humorous novelty songs, but he wrote some certified popular and country classics including "Invitation to the Blues," "That's the Way I Feel," Half a Mind," "Home," "The Last Word in Lonesome Is Me," and "Billy Bayou." Miller only recorded a few of these so you will not hear many of them on this album, but they do remind us that Miller was a very good songwriter. He played not only guitar but fiddle, piano, banjo, and drums. This album includes another novelty hit, "Chug-a-Lug," his original songs "Husbands & Wives" and nice ocvers of Bobby Russell's "Little Green Apples" and Kris Kristofferson's "Me and Bobby McGee."

However, in addition to an album like this one you need to have his Tony Award winning musical "Big River: The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn." Connecting the dots between the two is easy. I mean, the only other person you could think of to write the songs for a musical based on a Mark Twain book would have to be Randy Newman. "Big River" won seven Tony Awards and two of those went to Miller, for Best Musical and Outstanding Score.

There was always a brain (and a heart) behind all those funny little songs Miller sang in the Sixties, and it comes full flower in "Big River." But the evidence was always there if you paid attention. After all, "Trailers for sale or rent," is an opening line worthy of Dylan. Just believe me when I insist that you need to have two Roger Miller albums in your music library. There is just no way you are going to be disappointed.
