She was famous as both artist and model, infamous as political revolutionary and social libertine, and Frida Kahlo's controversial life couldn't help but seem the stuff of great musical theater. Her story is brought to the screen by director Julie Taymor, whose musical compatriot here is also her husband; Elliot Goldenthal, student of both Copland and Corigliani, shrewdly sublimates his modernism in service of the rich, evocative music and songs of Mexico and Central America. Utilizing performers that range from the contemporary (Lila Downs) to the folk-classic (Costa Rican legend Chavela Vargas; Brazilian star Caetano Veloso) and traditional (Los Cojolites, El Poder Del Norte, Trio Huasteca, Caimanes de Tanquin, and others), Goldenthal generously displays the true breadth of Mexican folk music, while seamlessly infusing it with the minimalist corners of his own underscore and some winning songwriting of his own. The result is one of 2002's most compelling soundtracks. The enhanced CD features include musical film excerpts, as well as a video conversation between Goldenthal and star Salma Hayek and text interviews with the composer and director Taymor. --Jerry McCulley

Revolutionary times.......2007-05-14
I absolutely love this soundtrack! Everytime I listen to it, I feel as though I am in Mexico during the revolution and Frida's life. Everyone should choose their own life soundtrack and this one allows us to see into Frida's life more clearly.
Black Dove.......2007-05-13
Fell into the movie trying to avoid study and hang out with a jilted housemate. If I'm honest, Salma Hayek was the main draw. Wafer thin.
However, I was enraptured by the story of Frida and the amazing performance (no wonder she was oscar nominated).
I bought the soundtrack the next morning. It really got to me.This is a great soundtrack and, yes, it does help if you have seen the movie but not necessary. I loved the latin passion (highs and lows). Chervala Vargas as Elliot Goldenthal describes in the slieve was once Frida's lover. I loved her Paloma Negra. So powerful.
There is something for everyone in this long soundtrack.
Do as i have: watch the movie and buy the soundtrack. Worth the time and money.
makes me want to dance .......2007-05-07
I really enjoyed the CD, the musical selection is great and it seems very authentic.
Enjoy!.......2006-12-30
I purchased this CD after seeing the movie. The music is enjoyable to listen to and passionate as I would think Frida was. I purchased this CD a second time to give to a female Hispanic artist who identifies with the trials and tribulations of Frida. This artist now paints while listening to this CD. Her artwork not only has improved but has become popular. I defiantly recommend its purchase.
FRIDA would be proud.......2006-10-20
Simply perfection. Each song will move you. I dont really even understand Spanish ( only simple conversational Spanish) and it strums my every emotion. I just LOVE it!

Stereolab fans, take note.......2007-01-10
Another spin-off from Stereolab, with less in common with its source than Laeticia's side-project Monade (Which is also worth a listen, particularly "A Few Steps More"). This one is from their bassist, Simon Johns, and draws a bit from Stereolab's hypnotic riffing style, but new vocalist Mary Hampton has a cleaner, lighter soprano voice...and I'd say this stands on its own merits. Fans of Adventures in Stereo might find it familiar territory, though the song structures are generally more complex and elaborated upon. Recommended. "Trinity Neon", their initial effort, isn't as strong, a band finding its footing; Half of its tracks are instrumentals, and as with Monade, not up to its sophomore effort. Those who love "Blow It Up" and Stereolab completists may want to check it out.

Refined, But Not Redefined.......2005-10-21
Now I'd love to start off this review by saying that I've been a fan of RLA forever and ever, back when they were still performing at Bar Mitzfas on weekends, blah blah blah. But that simply isn't true. I discovered them(and am so glad I did)simply because I happened to be lucky enough to live in the coverage area of one of the only three stations to play their single "Burn the Good Ones Down," WNRN here in Virginia. (One of the two others was 99x in Atlanta, the bands hometown.) I bought this ep, and hooked(as it's hard not not to be after listening to it), I went on their website to discover that it was actually their second; they released their first ep "Under Starlight" in '04. So, ofcourse, I had to have it. After being so impressed with this album, I was surprised at my disappointment with it. The songs were long winded, seeming to go on forever, and for all that listening, you hardly got any substance. I kept thinking: "Is it possible that these two CDs came from the same group?" Yes, it is possible. And let me say, I have never heard an improvement from one album to the next this great.
As far as my actual review of this band and their work, excellent. It is basically Brit-pop(which is a bit strange considering the band is from Atlanta), but their music pushes all sorts of boundaries. Fans of any kind of rock(except perhaps rap-metal)will find something to appreciate here. From the powerful title track to the heartfelt ballad "Hide your love away" to the zany "Voltage," the CD is a musical and emotional offering that will not disappoint. The band definitely has a spiritual influence in their music(Consider their name; in many Bibles the words of Christ are printed in Red.), but is not overtly Christian. (Bands that come to mind: Creed, Good Charlotte, P.O.D., Evanescence, 12 Stones, Dashboard Confessional, etc.) But the lyrics and tunes of the songs stand without their spiritual undertones in my opinion.
In summary, to see the publicity jump from last year's "Under Starlight ep" (not even sold here on Amazon) to "Burn the Good Ones Down" signifies that these guys are destined for a big future. My advice: Get in on the ground floor. Buy this ep. And buy "Under Starlight" if you must. Really big RLA buffs might check out the 99x Christmas album, which features an RLA tune. (I'm not even quite that big of a fan myself.) In a couple of years when Red Letter Agent mania is sweeping the nation(and it will, it will), impress your friends by pulling out all your RLA CDs and telling them you've been listening for years. That's what I'll be doing...

A FITTING CALL TO ARMS FOR MARTYRS.......2004-06-14
Now Racetraitor is not a name you ever hear in the UK, which makes their albums hard to get. Luckily i managed to track down this split with the fantastic 'Burn it Down'.
This split comprises of 3 full length tracks from each group and clocks in at 25minutes. Racetraitor provide skull crushing technical hardcore that sounds like a more cohesive Meshuggah jamming with Poison the Well at their most hardcore. Thought provoking lyrics are also provided in the booklet. All 3 tracks rock. Their full length 'Burn The Idol' needs to be tracked down and consumed at all costs.
Burn It Down have some wonderful tracks out on Escape Artist records and on this split they open with absolute ferocity almost making Racetraitor sound tame. Again they've put their own style on bone crushing technical hardcore and make tracks that go above and beyond hardcore. Check out the insane-ly fast drumming in the first track and track 2 for its wonderful slump into brutality. Their last track 'Every man's got a devil', is brilliant and showcases what 'Burn It Down' are all about but unfortuantly its also on the 'II - Escape Artist Compilation' which I just bought.
All in all a great purchase for fans of intelligent brutallity.
Local guys, and friends doing well!.......2000-08-02
These guys are great! The CD is good, but nothing compare to them live! I am glad to see these guys doing well. I know them all personally and they are a great bunch of guys. Go see them whenever you get the chance.

Chicago's Singer Goes Solo Again.......2005-09-08
Bill Champlin (Chicago's Singer) steps out for another solo CD called "Burn Down The Night". It also features Steve Lukather(Toto) & Bruce Gaitsch (Richard Marx) on Guitar & Joseph Williams (Toto Singer) on background vocals. I like "Highest Stakes", "When Love Comes Around", "Still Woth Saving" & "In Love Too Long". Champlin is a vocalist/Guitarist who has worked with (REO Speedwagon, Airplay, Dakota, Jimmy Harnen, Ray Kennedy, King Of Hearts, Prism, David Roberts, What If & the late Van Stephenson). I give it 4 out of 5 stars.
The return of a truly GREAT CD. Get it while you can!.......2004-09-09
This CD, originally released in 1992, is a real winner. It probably has more philosophic and social commentary in the lyrics than any of Bill's solo CD's. Every song is truly great.
Included are the studio versions of two of my all time favorites, "First And Last" and "Headed For The Top".
"In Love Too Long" is another cool rocker. "Highest Stakes", "For Less Than A Song", and "Fly By The Light" are more favorites.
"The Thunder" and "When Love Comes Around" are great songs too, with the added treat of having Terry Haggerty's wonderful guitar playing.
Bill has an impressive list of guest artists and musicians on this CD. In addition to Terry Haggerty, there's Tris Imboden, Greg Mathieson, Bruce Gaitsch, Steve Lukather, Luis Conte, George Hawkins, Joseph Williams, Tom Scott, Abraham Laboriel, Tamara Champlin, Carmen Twillie, Mona Lisa Young, Danny Pelfrey, and Bill Churchville.
This is a must have for all Bill Champlin fans! Don't miss it!
