Alt-Country?.......2007-02-11
If you like alternative, if you enjoy some Johnny Cash, you will enjoy The Beauty Shop. They do not form-fit to any particular genre, but still have a familiar feel. Hoeffleur's voice is memorizing. The Deepness of his voice makes one really feel what he is saying. And what he is saying is not some shallow song, or even a love song. Once you listen, you will understand the depth of topics that The Beauty Shop plays about.
Amazing!.......2005-11-18
The Beauty Shop play a brand of down-tempo acoustic Americana, basically defining their own genre, since I can think of no bands that even sound close to this. But it works, and it works well. This is one of the most original, dark and moody albums I've ever heard, and every song is special and unique. In fact everything about this band is unique. Hoeffleur's vocals sound a little like Brad Roberts of "The Crash Test Dummies", the music is country flavored, complete with a few banjo tunes, yet has very dark undertones. The lyrics deal with a variety of subjects from lost love to alcohol, love sick ghosts, and hounted houses. I have owned this album for four years now, and it's still a favorite. One-of-a-kind, but if I could make some recommendations, I would recommend this to fans of 16 horsepower, Songs:Ohia, the Black Heart Procession and Tom Waits. This is an album well worth owning!
Crash Test Dummies + alt country.......2003-03-08
I saw the singer/guitarist perform a solo acoustic set before Jason Ringenberg on their home turf in Urbana, IL. I immediately bought two CD's off the singer, The album reflected what I heard live. Quality is clear. The singers voice mirrors that of the male vocalist for Crash Test Dummies. The guitar work is creative, particularly acoustic work. The music is dark alt country and unique. This is not everyone's cup of tea, but if you like good, solid music not spit out from a hit machine give this baby a try.
Moody and introspective.......2001-01-29
A great first release from this Champaign-Urbana, IL based band. Reminded me a lot of Son Volt and even some early R.E.M. Most of the songs are in a darker vein, but enough genuine emotion comes through to make it an enjoyable CD. My only real negative comment would be that some of the songs are repetitive sounding. Not enough to be distracting but enough so that it only gets 4 stars. If you like Wilco, Uncle Tupelo, and so-called "prarie-rock" buy this album you won't be disappointed.
