5 out of 5 stars the best collection of music for any anime/cartoon ever made.......2006-10-23

SImply put,

whether you are a fan of Robotech: the Macross Saga, or any of the sequels (The Robotech Masters and Next Generation) or not; you HAVE To buy this collection!

The best tracks include, of course: the main theme--so uplifitng, a combination of classical music and 80s' intensity!the track entitled "Red Alert" indeed sounds like army personnel readying for comabat...
and the ever catching tunes Roy Fokker's Theme (track 31) and Rick Hunter's Theme (track 27) captured the characters' persona and action.

The musical songs by Michael Bradley(Lancer) and Reba West (Minmei) outperforms even live singers, well, ok, I'm going overboard with my praise here, but they really give it their all....

as a Robotech fan growing up in the 80s, I will always replay this perfect collection with fondness. And, as I pointed out before, any music lover of movie soundtracks, or even good songs; must buy this CD. And, any Robotech fan out there who hasn't gotten this to be part of your collection--do so now!

fantastic!
(although the 'Broken Heart' track is a little off, they could have remastered it from the DVD collection....that is my one minor complaint that this track is totally different than in the series).

5 out of 5 stars Anyone who likes the show MUST own this collection.......2004-06-09

Robotech Perfect Soundtrack Album(1994). A double-disc collection compiled of nearly every piece of music found in the Robotech anime series, ranging from the 3 original sagas to the never released series Robotech II: The Sentinels, and Robotech movie.

By the time the mid-80s rolled around, the only two popular "robotic warfare" anime series to really surface at the time were Mobile Suit Gundam and Voltron. Being a kid in the late 80s, I thought those two shows were good (Voltron being an old favorite of mine), but another show of that type came about and blew both of them away. Robotech was this new contender. At the time that it came out, it was the most advanced cartoon of its type, featuring an interesting story that spanned out over numerous episodes and some of the best animation of its time. Of course one aspect that helped shape the story of the series is the music score. Each music piece created fit in perfectly at key points in the show, and so the composers unified all three series with the same score.

With 66 total tracks and over 145 minutes of music, Robotech Perfect Collection manages to cram nearly every piece of music that was (and wasn't) on the show. In fact, the collection organized each disc into two sections: The Complete Background Music Collection, and The Complete Vocal Song Collection.

DISC ONE - THE COMPLETE BACKGROUND MUSIC COLLECTION
On this disc, you have most every piece of musical score found in the Macross, Robotech Masters, and New Generation sagas. It has the main title and closing themes as well as some of the more calm pieces and intense battle pieces. There are 42 tracks on this disc, though the tracks all range anywhere from 8 seconds to over 3 minutes. Any fan of the original show will find themselves at home here. I'm not going to talk about all the tracks individually as there are so many of them, so onto disc two...

DISC TWO - THE COMPLETE VOCAL SONG COLLECTION
This disc is where you will find all the full vocal songs in one form or another. Tracks 1-5 are the songs sung by the character Minmei on the show. I was never really a fan of her songs as most of them were very dated and cheezy, and the slower songs were drenched in sappiness (then again, I guess the whole soundtrack sounds dated, but it sort of adds to the appeal if you have a soft spot for it!). The one song of hers that's actually decent here is the epic 'We Will Win', which fits the battle above earth in the show very well. The best tracks begin after the Minmei songs. 'In My Heart' is a song by the classic rock band Three Dog Night written for the Robotech movie that was never released (how did they end up on here?). Pretty good. Tracks 7-11 are also taken from the movie, but they have better sound quality and are basically new-wavish 80s pop rock songs. Most are sung by a woman, with track #7 sung in a duet with the character Yellow Dancer. My favorites are 'Underground', 'Call On Me', and 'The Future Is Now'. Track 12 appeared on Robotech II: The Sentinels. The remaining vocal tracks, #'s 13-17 are all from The New Generation saga sung by Yellow Dancer. These are probably the best vocal songs on the disc, especially 'Look Up! The Sky Is Falling' and 'It Don't Get Any Better'. Yellow Dancer also sings the Minmei song 'We Will Win', though for some odd reason I actually like the original version better.

As a bonus, tagged onto the end of the Vocal Collection disc is the musical score to the never released series Robotech II: The Sentinels, on tracks 18-24. Whereas the original series score was orchestral with synth touches, the Robotech II score is all synthesized. Some are very good, others sound dated, but the best ones are 'Young Warriors', 'The Regent', and my absolute favorite score piece throughout the 2 discs, 'Invid Strike'. These tracks are a nice bonus on an otherwise packed collection crammed with music.

Overall, this is an outstanding collection of music and very well packaged. It even contains some liner notes detailing how the music came to be on the show. 5 stars. If you never grew up with the show, then this collection might not be for you and it won't change your mind, but if you watched the show and loved its score, then Robotech Perfect Collection would definitely be worth your time. It's EXTREMELY PRICEY now, though I managed to secure a copy for 20 bucks a couple years ago. So if you ever see it for a decent price, pick it up as it's extremely rare. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED TO ALL FANS.

5 out of 5 stars Robotech Fan?.......2003-05-02

5 out of 5 stars Protoculture, HO!.......2002-05-08

This collection will mean absolutely nothing to anyone but a real otaku of Robotech. Truly this represents a `Perfect' Collection of the sounds and music of the series. CD1 contains all of the themes - opening credits, attack, remorse, reflection, danger and closing credits. CD2 contains the songs from Macross by the much maligned Minmei, Yellow Dancer in Mospeada / New Generation and tracks from the unfulfilled Sentinels. Notably missing for me was Musicaa singing the `Invid Theme' and George Sullivan's rendition of `It's You' both from The Southern Cross Series.

The Minmei songs contain special qualities of kitsch and innocence that certainly were not present in other animated TV shows of the era. From a character perspective as a first effort by an emerging pop star manufactured to unite an ailing populace, who also went on to save the Earth from Dolza's Armada, I applaud. In other words leave Minmei alone! I also applaud the efforts of the music department of Harmony Gold in creating a fantastic mix of individual themes and songs. The sheer power of reminiscence this collection created left a big smile upon re-listening to these tracks, taking me all the way back to Boris' Breakfast Club many moons ago. Yes they sound dated, but many mainstream 80's tracks have suffered similarly with time. A MUST HAVE for any Robotech fan and so much better than dubbing a cassette tape from the original broadcast episodes to play in the car.

5 out of 5 stars A Long Forgotten Favorite.......2002-04-18

I happened to be one of the lucky few who bought this album when it was originally released on cassette and CD, sometime ago. Ofcourse I was young then, and Robotech was an irresistible obssessive fix.

Now looking back, the vocal CD is truly cheesy in every since of the word, but in the same way as most 80's music was. However, all the tracks retain their *charm* and never fail to entertain. Every time I listen to this CD it takes me back to when I was but a wee one, pretending to be a Veritech Fighter Pilot like the great Rick Hunter!

I'm sure it will do the same for you, pretty soon you and all your old...friends will be running around the house in your underwear claiming to be clones....or something like that.

5 out of 5 stars FIVE STARS PLUS.......2006-06-06

I've been buying alot of my old 70's and early 80's fusion cd's since my vinyl has been all but destroyed from repeated playings and abuse. I found Lenny White's Big City and Venesian Summer in a used CD bin in a record store in Baltimore. Listening to Lenny old stuff reminded me of how much I dug Streamline when it released. This CD is totally slamming and the sound still sounds fresh. I played the cd in my car for a 70's homeboy and he literally lost his mind. He wanted to borrow it but I remembered that was how all my vinyl got destroyed. The previous review was right on. The Larry Dunn touch was magic. Remember Caldera, Larry's fusion band featuring Eddie Del Barrio, George Strunz, this CD has that kind of magic. The Marcus Miller bass sets this cd ablaze. Buy,Listen and Enjoy!!

5 out of 5 stars Marcus Miller has arrived.......2006-05-25

Fantastic CD. I agree with the other reviews. The main things that set this project apart were Larry Dunn's production (his synth programming and orchestration is absolutely gorgeous, as always!) and something not mentioned in the previous reviews: Marcus Miller (how could you not mention MM?!?)!! Oh my god, the tone, the groove! Marcus was only about 18 years old on this CD, but had certainly done his homework. This wasn't Marcus' first recording, but among his first. It was definitely his highest profile recording up to that time, and notable because he was playing with Lenny White, inviting direct comparison with Stanley Clarke. Marcus doesn't shy away from the challenge, and even throws in a Stanley lick or two, as he sometimes did in this early phase of his career (check out Brecker Brothers' Detente). This CD really marks Marcus' arrival, which is (not coincidentally) also the beginning of the end of the Stanley Clarke / Jaco Pastorius era.

5 out of 5 stars Not Such A High Concept!.......2004-09-11

Following in the lead of his band Return To Forever's
nagging hyperbole, most of Lenny White's solo albums have been
little more then excersises in overplaying-only the most intellectual and skilled of musicians would be likely to even
appreciate them. But on 1978's 'Streamline' Lenny White went all
out to change all that.Across eleven songs the arrangements are
tightly wound and the accompanyment extremely glossy.High production values are prominant but so is a much welcome sense
of actual melody and song quality.
The instrumental "Pooh Bear" is probably the
best example of what great fusion should be-grooving,upbeat
and expressive and Larry Dunn's production does give some of these tunes and Earth,Wind & Fire style. In the meantime Chaka Khan joins in to throw down a throbbing funk rendition of
"Lady Madonna" (actually it may even wipe the floor with
The Beatles original as well).Even "12 Bars From Mars" and
"Earthlings" may even give a little missive from the funk-rock
book while "Struttin'" and "Time" are pure vocal funk!Even the
more pure fusiony tunes "Lockie's Inspiration","I'll See You
Again" and "Night Games" are far more structured."Cosmic Indigo"
ends off the whole thing veturing into acoustic jazz. All this being said due to the often uneven nature of Lenny White albums
this is probably the first album you should purchase by this artist!

5 out of 5 stars What Jazz-Fusion is supposed to be!.......2003-07-12

This is probably THE most awesome jazz-fusion album ever! I can't believe they waited SO long to put it out on CD! I have been waiting for this for 15 years! From the incredible opening "Struttin'" right on through the funked up version of "Lady Madonna" with Chaka Khan's soaring vocals on the break, to the blistering guitar work on "Earthlings" and on to the final cut "Cosmic Indigo" this record will BLOW YOU AWAY!

If you are into jazz-fusion and can only afford one album, this is the one you should buy!!! The tunes are all wired and the players are all at the top of their game on this one. The sonic presence of the lead guitar on "Earthlings" will pin you back and make you wonder how they got such a spectacular sound onto the recording over 20 years ago!

It's got enough jazz in it for the jazz buffs, and more than enough fusion to draw the rock crowd in. If you want, you can even sample "12 Bars from Mars" on your computer, and play it back at half speed to find out what the heck it is (subtle hint).

Buy it, put it in, crank up the volume and be prepared to be inspired, impressed, and blown away . . . all at the same time! You will finally know what the "REPEAT ALL" button on your CD player is for! Buy, buy, buy! Listen, listen, listen! Cherish, cherish, cherish! Listen some more!

I guarantee you will not regret buying this one, unless you ONLY go for classical music. If that's the case, all of the above is lost on you anyway.

5 out of 5 stars A Lenny White Classic...........2003-06-27

This album is truly some of Lenny's best work. This is one of an array of albums showing Lenny at the peak of his creative powers in a very special time in jazz-fusion history. He truly takes his place as an icon of the jazz-fusion movement.

This is without a doubt one of the finest pieces of sound art I have ever heard. Andrew Chalk is the only artist I know of who is on par with the Hafler Trio when it comes to producing mind-bending drone "music". There is no way to describe this "music" but if your a fan of other drone/sound artists such as Hafler Trio, Nurse With Wound, Organum, Mirror etc. get this while you can.

There's just something about slide guitar when it's done right, and it's definitely done right here. Streamline Special is something of a history lesson, as well; everyone from Robert Johnson ("Preachin' Blues") and Blind Boy Fuller ("Homesick & Lonesome Blues") to Muddy Waters ("I Feel Like Going Home") to Taj Mahal, whose "Country Blues" rendition is one of the highlights of this collection. There's the deceptively down-tempo "Two Timin' Woman" from Casey Bill Weldon, and Bukka White's "Special Streamline," where he does a train sound with his guitar that puts Aerosmith's "Train Kept a-Rollin'" to shame. Allen Shaw really does moan on "Moanin' the Blues," and Tampa Red and Georgia Tom's "No Matter How She Done It" is a smart, sassy, and frequently hilarious song. This isn't a definitive collection by a long shot, but it's an excellent introduction to the expressiveness and versatility of slide guitar. --Genevieve Williams

I am afraid that any words used to express my fondness for this CD would be inadequate. Anyone who appreciates blues should pick this one up without question. And if ya don't love blues, pick this one up. You will certainly not regret it. All of the artists are shining examples of the best black blues, indeed the only blues. Simpley because there is no such thing as a worthy white blues man.
