Amazon.com essential recording

Most critics complain Back in Black, the album AC/DC recorded after the death of their original lead screamer Bon Scott, is ridiculously juvenile, obvious, snickering, bludgeoning, derivative, single-minded about sex and booze, a big cartoon. All true, of course, and--on rock 'n' ragers like "What Do You Do For Money Honey," "You Shook Me All Night Long," and the title track--all great. As Scott's replacement Brian Johnson reminds us, loud and crunchy, no-holds-barred "rock and roll ain't noise pollution...it makes good, good sense." Never trust anyone who refuses to drink domestic beer, laugh at the Three Stooges, or crank Back in Black. --David Cantwell

Album Description

AC/DC's 1980 album digitally remastered and reissued in a special digipak plus a 16 page full color booklet containing all original album art, many unpublished photos, classic memorabilia and new 2003 liner notes. Epic.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best CDs ever...REMASTERED.......2007-06-27

I owned an original copy of Back in Black and played it constantly. It's an ideal CD for road trips and just incredible rock from beginning to end. I didn't think anything could possibly improve it until I heard the remastered version. Suddenly the bass comes out more, the drums are even more in your face, the vocals are clearer, it just ROCKS even more. There are plenty of bad remasters out there of various classic albums, but thankfully, this is not one of them.

5 out of 5 stars The rebirth of AC/DC .......2007-05-16

Hands down the best AC/DC CD. This is the cream of the crop, and it doesn't get any better than this. To this day, each song rocks loud and hard, and vocalist Brian Johnson was never better. A must for any hard rock collection, your ears will be bleeding.

5 out of 5 stars It does'nt get much Better than this!!.......2007-05-11

Of course, In my humble opinion, this album is in my Top Ten of all-time. It rocks, it's bluesy, crushing, sneering and has that "I'm badder than you attitude." And it's just a lot of FUN. Really, what more could you want in a Rock album? Get your hands on this bad boy!!!

5 out of 5 stars Back In Black again.......2007-04-12

This is one of the best albums of all time and if you don't believe me check any registered music critic's top 100 list and you'll see it there somewhere. Not only is it a fun album and one that brings constant memories of high school flooding back to me; it really is a very well put together record. Coming off the death of lead singer Bon Scott, the Young boys and their co-horts hopped onto the Brian Johnson wagon and headed into the studio. With the fists to the air and groin to the ground "You Shook Me All Night Long" this album was off and running all over the world. The sound on the remaster is excellant and so are the liner notes some of which make you really listen to the album. The mixture of old blues and hard rock is more evident than I originally had even thought of and just the hard rocking fun of the title track, the grinding "Rock & Roll Ain't Noise Pollution" and "Giving The Dog A Bone" is just plain exciting. If you haven't heard it in a while I highly suggest you throw that old cassette into the boom box and give it another go - or better yet get this remaster, I know you want it.

5 out of 5 stars Hard-Rock Perfection!.......2007-03-27

What is there to say that the other 180 or so reviewers haven't said about what makes AC/DC's "Back In Black" so great?!Well, the 2003 remaster here is awesome sonically. While the previous 1994 Atlantic remaster(done by Ted Jensen) sounded tame and timid,Epic's one(done by George Marino) took it to next level, sounding bassier, ballsier and much truer to the original vinyl verison. In addition,it comes in a attractive digipack containing an entertaining 16-page booklet that contains rare photos, memorabila, press clips and a good essay by noted rock writer David Fricke. You know the rest,so if you are not one the 22 millon who don't already own this timeless classic, click "Add To Cart" right now!

Album Description

Journey: Live in New York is filled with the signature Richard Smallwood melodies, harmonies, and orchestral arrangements that listeners have come to expect and adore. Smallwood's musical genius blurs the lines between live audience and taped recording, transporting the listener to the actual event, rather than leaving them sitting in a spectator's position. And, just as always, Vision, the rich and vibrant choir, backs Smallwood to bring his songs to life. Journey: Live in New York, boasts guest appearances by Chaka Khan, Kelly Price, The Hawkins Family and more! This double CD also includes special enhancements and live concert video.

5 out of 5 stars Excellence Personified!.......2007-07-05

Richard Smallwood's latest project, Journey: Live in New York, is his best work to date! It is an expressed representation of musical excellence that ushers you right into the presence of God! This CD set is a must have for any serious lover of gospel music.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome.......2007-07-05

Ilove Richard Smallwood I have been a fan since I was 15 years old and this CD project was amazing I went to the actual concert in New York abt 3 years ago and I was amazed then as I do now. I belong to the church where Richard Worships and I sing in the choir that he consults (when he is in town that is) But I really love his style of music as it takes u there and if you are not careful you will find yourself underneath a church bench in the spirit. Si get this porject if you have not as this wa is absolutely awesome!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

4 out of 5 stars Not the typical Smallwood item.......2007-07-03

This is a 2-CD set. A lot of his past work is on the CD. There are several new songs that are nice but this is not his usual standard.

3 out of 5 stars Richard Smallwood continues his Journey.......2007-06-16

A longtime fan of Professor Richard Smallwood - that, I am.

Smallwood possesses an unquestionable gift; one given to him by God and shared with the world through his passion and ministry of gospel music. The journey of Richard Smallwood (in song) became apparent to the world in the early 1980's, though he'd been singing since childhood and directing choirs since age 12.

Recorded, August 2005, the initial release date of this project was rescheduled, due in part to the loss of Richard's beloved Mother, Mabel Ruth Smallwood, whom he honors and credits highly with giving him his start in the art of music.

I was in attendance the evening of this recording and the atmosphere inside of the Hammerstein Ballroom, before the recording, was electric, to say the least. You see, New York City admires Richard Smallwood and to have him agree to record a live project on the richest island in the world, Manhattan, was an event!

You will find that this effort consists of not 1, but 2 CD's; one disc is enhanced with a video performance and before closing out disc two, you are treated to 3 bonus tracks. As much as I admire Professor Smallwood, while reviewing this product, I wasn't thoroughly inspired by what I heard until disc two filled the studio. Oh yes, "I'll Trust Him" on disc one, performed by Mr. Smallwood was excellent, but that was all. Vision, Smallwood's talent laden ensemble, start the ball rolling on disc two with a rousing anthem entitled "All The Glory"; it just gets better from there as special guests, Kelly Price, The Hawkins Family and new convert, Chaka Khan take the stage.

Overall, this offering from Richard Smallwood is acceptable, for it is he who is responsible for the movement and undeniable marriage of classical music to traditional gospel music; for that he will always be esteemed. My faves on Journey: Live in New York include, "I'll Trust Him", "All The Glory", "Morning's Breaking" and "Precious Is Your Name."

2 out of 5 stars Richard wat happened?!.......2007-06-12

I will start of by sayin I am 17 and every since I was 6 I have loved Richard Smallwood, I would beg my mom 2 get me his cds. However when I heard he was doin I live recording back in "2005" I was so excited and then I was disoppointed by the 2 yr wait. I was so excited on June 5 I got in my car and rushed 2 walmart 2 get it. When I got 2 my car and heard the cd I was felt cheated and let down. I was so lookin foward 2 this cd and it only had 2 songs I liked and a 1:30 rip off praise break I felt cheated out of 15 dollars. In sayin all this I luv Richard but da cd sucks!

Score composer Howard Shore has informed this first installment of the Lord of the Rings trilogy with his distinctly modern sensibilities. Revolving loosely around a brief, heroic brass theme, this epic is infused with a powerful rhythmic thrust and a musical range that encompasses centuries (from the Renaissance pastoralism of "Concerning Hobbits" to the fiery, Prokofiev-influenced drama of "A Knife in the Dark"). Key to the score's sense of mystery and magical place are the rich choral passages that are interspersed throughout, some so ominously gothic they make The Phantom Menace's "Duel of the Fates" sound almost sunny by comparison. Enya's contributions ("The Council of Elrond" and the song "May It Be") add a sense of organic tranquility, but it's Shore's Wagnerian-scaled orchestral score that should long be cherished by admirers of film music and hobbits alike. --Jerry McCulley

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars The music is good but the movie is better.......2007-04-10

I really enjoyed the 3 series of The Lord of the Rings movie so I wanted the music. The soundtracks are good but if you like the movie the soundtracks watch the movie. They remind you of certain parts in the movie like the song Concerning Hobbits. The song is whimsical. Enyna has a great voice, very haunting. The Ring Goes South is another favorite of mine. I can enjoy these soundtracks as classical or dramatic music. I bought them because I loved the Lord of the Rings which has many similarities to Braveheart. Bravery, courage, strength, honesty, selflessness, love and other good human qualities people try to attain and admire them in the people and movies they view.

5 out of 5 stars A grand sountrack..........2007-01-10

One of Howard Shore's best soundtracks around. The music is strong enough to tell its own separate story apart from FOTR. You will never tire of the heart-pounding excitement from The Bridge of Kazaad-Dum track.

5 out of 5 stars Lord of the Rings Original Soundtracks, films 1 and 3.......2006-11-08

Having made an earlier mistake of buying 2 C.D.'s which were not original soundtrack, I can truthfully say these are the best. If you are a Lord of the Rings fan, look no further - no one does it better than The London Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by the composer Howard Shore. You will be back in Middle Earth reliving all those wonderful scenes. I bought only The Fellowship of the Ring and The Return of the King from Amazon.com because I already had the Two Towers from Amazon.co.uk and I would recommend all three - magical.

5 out of 5 stars Awe inspiring!.......2006-10-02

What can I say that hasn't already been said about Howard Shore's magnificent score for the "Lord of the Rings" trilogy? A soundtrack can define the whole atmosphere of a film, and this fully orchestrated work certainly does that with sweep, splendor and wonder, alternately humanizing (hobbit-izing?) the characters, imbuing the landscape with magic and capturing the world-shaking impact of events of mythic proportions. And this was no easy task considering the iconoclastic status of the story and the superb quality of Peter Jackson's filmmaking. This is a truly a soundtrack for the ages--a fitting accompaniment to a film for the ages! Every aspect of life, from the extreme to the mundane, is captured in this music. Listening to it can make every remembered moment of the movie come alive again in your mind, from the most horrific battle to the smallest moment of humor or kindness. I think this first one is my favorite of the three "Lord of the Rings" soundtracks. I enjoy the juxtaposition of the lighter moments, like the sweet, simple hobbit theme, with the grander and more menacing sections of the music. (That despite the fact that said hobbit theme begins exactly like the first phrase of the Protestant hymn "This Is My Father's World," which prompts me to think of the hobbits trouping off to Sunday school every time I hear it. But now when I hear the hymn, I think of Lord of the Rings, so I suppose all's fair!) What impressed me most as I watched "The Fellowship of the Ring" was how scary the music was when the hobbits were being pursued. Those relentless drums and eerily screaming drums made the hairs on the back of my neck stand up, even though I knew the story like the back of my hand and knew for a fact that the poor little heroes would manage to escape. But the music truly made me wonder otherwise ... Now that's good composition! And the fact that the filmmakers chose to include background music in so many of the scenes, almost continuously ... well, that's just good filmmaking! The other impressive thing about Howard Shore's score is how the voicing and repeating motifs tie the whole thing together, like the finest of symphonies. The total effect is utterly convincing and utterly transporting. Peter Jackson chose well when he picked Shore as his score writer. Very, very well! Be sure to get the scores from the other two movies in the trilogy as well - "The Two Towers" and "Return of the King." They seem to be available in no end of different packagings, including ones with bonus DVDs about the creation of the score. Also, make sure to get the extended edition DVDs of the movie itself, with hours and hours of fascinating commentaries and behind-the-scenes documentaries about the making of the films. Truly a bargain at any price! And for more seminal soundtracks, try John Williams' defining scores for the "Star Wars" series and Basil Poledouris's spectacular score for the original "Conan the Barbarian."

5 out of 5 stars It is the best of the three CDs!!!.......2006-09-10

For me, the music of the first sequel is my favourite since this is also the sequel that I prefer in the trilogy (I remember being blown away by the quality of this movie, the actors, the setting, the action scenes, the special effects, the moving relationships between all the characters and of coourse the music)
I think that the other CDs are a bit repetitive once you've got this one, even if I still like the music of the second soundtrack 'The Two Towers'. As for the 3rd sequel, I seldom listen to it as there is only one track that I like, 'The Return of the King'.
Now, this first CD of the trilogy is actually very good. Thanks to Enya, it is haunting and the songs are beautiful. There are a few eery but melodious songs like 'The Council of Elrond', 'Lothlorien', 'May it Be'. I love the change of tempo, the balance between fast and slow movements in 'A Knife in the Dark', 'Flight to the ford', and 'Amon Hen' which is my favourite piece (the Death of Boromir) with the oboe sound mixed with the beat of the drums and finaly the haunting voice of the singer. Track 17 is also worth listening. I like this CD because you've got different tempos and melodies and Anya is a great singer to me. But I also enjoy listening to Emiliana Torrini's song 'Gollum's Song'in the second soundtrack...

Like the Black Crowes themselves, the greatest-hits collection A Tribute to a Work in Progress hearkens back to the good old days of best-of collections: you get a bunch of songs you've probably heard on the radio a million times and that's it. These are arguably the group's best songs, but there are no unreleased outtakes or remixes to force rabid collectors to purchase the disc for the sake of two songs. This straightforward document of a straightforward band is also the best entryway to the group's fabulous, swaggering, ballsy, bluesy rock & roll--that is, next to their 1992 breakthrough, Southern Harmony & Musical Companion. While arranged chronologically, what one hears here is the Atlanta-based group playing great, unpretentious Stones-, Faces-, and Zep-influenced rock. This music was made for pure, visceral enjoyment, so play it really loud and dance around. --Mike McGonigal

I purchased this CD on Feb 5, was supposed to receive by Feb 8. Unfortunately, the delivery system is definitly not as good as the cd. I finally received it March 1st. It was well worth the wait and aggravation of calling a few times to find out where it was. I can say I like every single song on the cd. Usually, I skip ahead to this song or that one. No need to here. Great songs, great cd....have to admit great price, just really lousy shipping. Better luck with that part next time.

Magic was created one starlit night in July 1990, when Luciano Pavarotti, Placido Domingo and José Carreras met onstage at the Baths of Caracalla in Rome and became the Three Tenors. They eschewed competitive instincts and cooperated in the spirit of mutual admiration to create one of the greatest musical events ever. This concert is an awe-inspiring orgy of the greatest hits for the tenor voice. Domingo and Pavarotti sing perfectly. The audience wins as these vocal supermen compete to seduce the hearts of the audience. One moment Domingo brings thrilling fire and pain to "E lucevan le stelle" from Tosca; the next, Pavarotti rises to heavenly heights in an inspired rendition of "Nessun dorma" from Turandot. Carreras is the competent little brother, one step behind the greatness of the big brothers from opera's Ponderosa. His singing isn't as captivating as that of the big boys; but his enthusiasm and passion are unrivaled. Mehta exquisitely captures the largeness of this bonanza through the grandiose orchestra. --Barbara Eisner Bayer

4 out of 5 stars delivery went ok.......2006-11-14

the item was delivered to me on-time and with no problems. however,i was looking for a DVD and not a audio Cd. might be good to clearly differentiate when the product is being advertised or shown.

5 out of 5 stars A knockout performance .......2006-05-28

Like so many of the reviewers here I am not an opera aficionado. But I sensed immediately the night I saw this concert on television that this was one of those 'remarkable' artistic events. Domingo and Pavarotti both have such strength and beauty in their voices that they overwhelm. Carreras adds flavor and enthusiasm.
One of the most remarkable music performances I have seen.

5 out of 5 stars The night that started it all!.......2005-11-02

You can read the technical information about the contents of this CD above. That is not what this review is about. I became intrested in opera about 1 1/2 years ago because of happening upon Mario Lanza. Since then, I have experienced many great truly operatic voices, including the "King," Pavarotti.
If you are just discovering opera, suffice it to say; Buy this album!!! It was the concert that launched the 3 Tenors phenomenon. It is full of uplifting, heart- tugging favorites, and you will find yourself listening to it over and over. Buy the dvd as well. It imparts absolute electricity! I am a young pianist and vocalist, and this concert is truly inspiring to me! You won't regret one penny you spend on this!

5 out of 5 stars Great singing from the three tenors.......2005-06-23

This cd is a must-have for anyone interested in opera - or beautiful singing. And when you're at it - why don't buy the dvd from the concert? It will make you appreciate the cd even more.

First of all I have to comment on the editorial review of this cd. I felt the reviewer is "belittling" José Carreras here by saying he's one step behind the big brothers and his singing isn't as captivating as that of the big boys.....?!?!? Of course I can only speak for myself, but I feel she's way out of line. And I'm starting to wonder if she's been listening to the cd at all? In my opinion you have to be dead not to be touched by his rendition of "Lamento di Federico" and "L'improvviso". If anybody can deliver a line it has to be Carreras. When it comes to his interpretation of "Granada" even conductor Zubin Mehta was gobsmacked. Watching the dvd you can see him putting down his baton and applauding. He even steps down from his podium to hug José.

I have to say I'm not too keen on the two other tenors, although I have to admit I loved Pavarotti's "Torna a Surriento" and "Rondine al nido". The thing about Pavarotti is that he has a great singing technique and he's also in possession of this "push-button" which make him sing a lot of high notes, but that alone isn't enough to stir emotion.

As for Domingo, even if he's giving it all in every song, and his "No puede ser" was great,I think he's a bit too much on the nasal side. He's okay when they all perform together, but his "E lucevan le stelle" is sending shivers down my spine - and not of delight. I'm practically unable to sit still and listen to his solos. If you really want "fire and pain" you should check out Carreras in the Tosca-recording from -80, or his recording from -76. It's really breathtaking and I promise you'll end up in tears!

At the end of this concert the three tenors perform a medley together. Their voices blend perfectly and it's powerful to listen to them giving it all. A lot of people are talking about their mis-pronounciations. I for one, think it only adds to the charm of the performers. Pavarotti has some problems with the English songs (okay, big problems..), Domingo stumbles in the words in the beginning of "Wien Wien nur du allein", and (this you'll see in the dvd) in the same song Carreras is actually reading the text from a piece of paper as he's singing and his facial expressions when getting his head around the German words are really hilarious. O sole mio as an encore is fabulous when Pavarotti pushes his button and shakes out all his high notes.... And I love it when the two other join forces and repeat his stunt to perfection.

All in all this is a wonderful album. And well worth 5 stars.... José alone gets 10 stars!!!

5 out of 5 stars Excellent. Like summer sunshine. manna from heaven!.......2004-05-28

This CD is terrific on so many levels. In celebration of one of the world's great sporting events - the World Cup of football (soccer to us stateside), three great tenors and one masterful conductor (Zubin Mehta) were brought together in one of the world's great cities - Rome -- for a special evening that we are blessed to have been able to listen to again and again.

The concert was held during the World Cup in 1990 at the Baths of Caracella, which are ruins of the once great Roman baths. In this beautiful setting Luiciano Pavrotti, Jose Carreas and Placido Domingo came together for one of the best CD's ever made.

The singing is exquisite. The passion of the crowd in this live performance should equal the reaction of the listener. This is art at its highest level. It is a celebration of great music, not just of opera, but in my opinion, the soaring human spirit. What power to move the soul! You don't need to be an opera fan to enjoy this music. If you like any kind of music, you cannot help but be affected by the power of this special evening. And what an evening, those in attendance were lucky to have been there!!

The casual listener will already know some of these arias, as they are from some the great operas of all time. However, I believe even the most hardenend opera fan, unless he or she is a real stiff, cannot be helped to be but moved by this music.

It is heavenly! I recommend this CD to you, because in my humble opinion, it will bring sunshine to your heart!!! : )

Yes,this ROCK 'N ROLL AIN'T NOISE POLLUTION. That track is on many playlists of classic rock radio stations along with the title track,HELLS BELLS,GIVEN THE DOG A BONE and YOU SHOOK ME ALL NIGHT LONG. Fans who own this 1980 release also own DIRTY DEEDS DONE DIRT CHEAP,FLICK OF THE SWITCH,FLY ON THE WALL and THE RAZOR'S EDGE. Awesome album!

Absolute best and absolute must-have AC/DC CD ever made.

If you are going to get 1 AC/DC in your life, make absolutely sure to get "Back in Black".

1 and only manitory AC/DC to get.

5 out of 5 stars One of those classic must have records in the annals of rock n roll.......2007-05-16

For those who don't know, this is not only a great album but it's also the important album that demonstrated AC/DC had a future after Bon Scott. This album is not only critical for fans of AC/DC, but those of rock n roll period.

4 out of 5 stars A good starter for the 80s.......2007-05-06

Filled with raw agression and true rock 'n' roll spirit, Back in Black is an awesome starting album for the 80s and arguably the finest of the decade. The suspenseful, ominous chimes of "Hells Bells" introduce the album to the rock scenery just as AC/DC would do. "Shoot to Thrill" is also an instant hard-rocker, with great riffs and well thought out vocals. The heavy metal opening riffs of "Givin' the Dog a Bone" cautiously prepare you for the latter song "Let Me Put My Love into You," one of the album's letdowns. This, however, is completely contrary to some of the other songs, such as the instant hit "Back in Black," which is literally one of the best songs I've ever heard. It has awesome and ideal licks for any song of its genre, and one of the best guitar solos ever. Its successor, "You Shook Me All Night Long," also has nice riffs, and good lyrics/vocals to boot. The Hendrix-like guitar solo for "Shake a Leg" makes you want to jump and start headbanging straight away; as does the rest of the song. The album leaves you with "Rock and Roll Ain't Noise Pollution," which all hard rock fans should be singing in defense against today's rap listeners. Back in Black is a great album that you should buy whenever you get the chance, but songs like "What Do You Do for Money, Honey?" and "Let Me Put My Love into You" can be hard to listen to. Overall a great album from AC/DC that could give vocalists like Freddie Mercury and guitarists like Jimi Hendrix a run for their money. If you don't have this album you should definately add it to your collection.

4 out of 5 stars Simple Lyrics. Simple Beats. Great Rock!.......2007-04-22

Whenever I'm in a down mood and I want to just blow that downer mood away, I turn to AC-DC's "Back In Black". The simplest of song lyrics, with hard-driving beats and hard-driving guitar work and hard-driving drums, this is the thunderstorm of rock weather. It separates itself from the usual hard-rock by having very catchy melodies and surprisingly crafted studio engineering quality. Its purpose: to have some really loud, raucous fun. What is ISN'T: if you're looking to have your nose really rubbed in some genuinely dirty twisted nastiness, you won't get that with this disc. It also has no quiet nuance; no lilting, breathless, barely audible poetry; no gentle ethereal transcendental softness. But It Really Rocks. Women, Alcohol, Rock. Great Simple Fun.

4 out of 5 stars You know, they didn't actually go away.......2007-07-07

I've noticed in various metal publications (as well as the reviews here) that Paradise Lost's 2007 album In Requiem is being hailed as a "return to form" and the band's best album since 1995's Draconian Times. What exactly did the band have to "return" from? I suppose Host and Believe in Nothing could be considered below Paradise Lost's usual high standards, but One Second, Symbol of Life and Paradise Lost were all fantastic albums. In Requiem is simply the logical extension of those recent works.

I will grant that In Requiem seems like a tighter, more focused album than its predecessors. The band seems far more interested in writing good metal songs than in coming up with dance beats, which is fine by me. Once again, Paradise Lost demonstrates why no one can touch them when it comes to balancing a dark atmosphere and subject matter with completely irresistible melodies (see for example, songs like Enemy and Beneath Black Skies). There isn't a lot of experimentation, nor are there any Dead Can Dance or Smiths covers this time around. Of course, I tend to think that Paradise Lost can do whatever they want at this point, considering the fact that they pretty much invented the whole gothic metal genre.

So yeah, it's a really solid album. I just think that most of the praise it is receiving could just as easily have been heaped upon either of the band's previous albums. I do think that the cover artwork for In Requiem is one of the best, if not the best, of the band's album covers to date.

4 out of 5 stars Paradise Lost has been rediscovered!.......2007-06-25

I agree with the comments from the previous review. This CD is really good. Paradise Lost is back in top form with this release and it's about time; the last album that I really liked was Draconian Times, and that was over 10 years ago! I had bought a few other post Draconian Times albums and was sorely disappointed. I had just about forgotten about Paradise Lost when I decided to risk buying this and I am not disappointed. This is what they should have done years ago, but better late then never!

5 out of 5 stars Very heavy & melodic.......2007-06-19

I've been a Paradise Lost fan since Draconian Times. I think this is their best effort in years and might even be my favorite album from them. It's on constant rotation on my MP3 player. Notable tracks are "Never for the Damned", "The Enemy" and "Praise Lamented Shade" which is a very dark and churning song. Very passionate vocals and melodies. This is a great release from a great band.

Back in 1990, three of the world's most celebrated tenors--namely, José Carreras, Plácido Domingo, and Luciano Pavarotti--combined forces to create the Three Tenors, now celebrated on a best-of CD. They gave their first concert in Rome. The event was recorded and went on to become one of the best-selling classical titles of all time.

This latest release brings together tracks from that night in Rome (including "Nessun dorma" and a competitive rendition of "O sole mio") with music performed in a 1994 concert in Los Angeles and at the 1998 event in Paris where the Three Tenors sang to an audience of thousands with the Eiffel Tower as their backdrop.

The 22 tracks making up The Best of the Three Tenors range from operatic standards, such as the joyful "Brindisi" from La Traviata, to popular songs like "Singin' in the Rain" and "You'll Never Walk Alone" (from Carousel). There are no solos on this disc; each piece is performed by all three singers. And with plenty of applause and cheering to be heard, not to mention the sense of fun in the singers' voices, the disc captures the atmosphere of these extraordinary musical events. --Rebecca Agnew

4 out of 5 stars Not bad.......2006-03-18

This is a good recording. If you don't like the 3 tenors, then look else where. It's that simple. These are recordings from concerts where they WERE supposed to show off. This ain't opera. If you want opera, go out and attend one.

5 out of 5 stars The best from the three greatest..........2005-08-11

The first thing we must establish here is that this is not meant to be opera. This is three exceptionally talented tenors enjoying themselves and giving tremendous joy to those listening by singing mostly popular "evergreens" and also some operatic arias. The beauty in music lies in the diversity, in my opinion. One can better appreciate one type of music when one knows about the others. And why should we limit ourselves to listen to just one genre in music. It would be the same as having steak for dinner every day for the rest of your life, wouldn't it? So why should we limit three wonderful tenors to only sing operatic arias for the rest of their lives? If so we wouldn't have "Maria", "You'll never walk alone", "Singing in the rain" or any of the evergreens on this recording and that would be a shame.

There are no solos on the cd. I think I've read somewhere that they felt there had been enough "three tenors cd's" and if they were to release yet another one it would be one containing what the audience demands, the three of them joining forces and performing together in the songs.
The result, in my opinion is highly recommendable. The three voices blend perfectly together. I have to admit that I have a personal favourite among the tenors and that I would never buy an entire recording featuring only one of the two others, but I recognize their talents and -as stupid as it may sound- since they are performing together I can also appreciate the other two. (I like them too, but in smaller doses....)Some people have commented on their problems with mastering the english language. If anything, I think it just adds to their charm. By the way, who is perfect??

The songs on this cd is a mixture of beautiful songs, heartwrenching songs, toe-tapping songs and powerful songs. It's wonderful to just listen to the beauty in the three voices. It's fun hearing Pavarotti pushing his "high-note-button" in "O sole mio" and Carreras and Domingo copying his stunt. I have no idea what they're singing about in "Manha de Carnaval", but boy does it sound romantic...... And "Dicitencello vuie" brings tears to my eyes (even if I'm still left in the dark when it comes to understanding the meaning of the words...) In "Because" Carreras takes my breath away when singing "because God made thee mine, I'll cherish thee...through light and darkness, through all time to be, and pray his love may make our love divine...." (What woman wouldn't like to hear those words..??!?) Their rendition of "You'll never walk alone" should satisfy some of the soccer-fans since it's the anthem of a European football-club and "Nessun Dorma" will probably satisfy the rest of the soccer-fans, being the antheme of the 1998 world soccer championship. In short, there should be something for every taste on this cd.

It's a very "versatile" cd. You can play it almost everywhere. You can sing along to it in the car, you can dance around the house to it while doing your chores, you can put your feet up and unwind after a hectic week. Or you can write an Amazon review while listening to it.... (Feel free to add suggestions of your own here.....)

To make a long story short - a very enjoyable cd!

5 out of 5 stars Just Like the Real Thing!.......2005-07-14

A few years ago I was lucky enough to actually see a Three Tenors concert. The experience was amazing. Later I bought this CD. I was so happy when I listened to it because the CD captures the mood of being present at the concert. I like the variety and every time I play it, I am taken back to my personal experience at the concert. Hearing the audiences on the CD really gets you excited about hearing this amazing trio.

5 out of 5 stars Powerful and moving!.......2004-10-21

I got this CD as a gift and it changed my life! I was always a rocker and liked classical music, but never was much into this genre of music. This album changed all of that. Since getting the three tenors I've found a whole new world out there. Thank you guys!

5 out of 5 stars Great Compilation.......2003-07-16

Definitely worth purchasing. It is not an opera CD - it is a concert CD with 3 superb tenor voices that blend together so nicely. A wonderfully entertaining music CD with lots of variety and an opportunity for opera to grow on non-opera lovers. What else can you expect from the BEST. A DVD version would be wonderful.

From Electric Light Orchestra to Urge Overkill, some of rock's most memorable acts have trafficked in over-amplifications of genre to a level approaching the absurd. Whether Dimmu Borgir has the campy self-awareness of the latter or simply find themselves locked into their delirious conflation of black metal, vaguely industrial rock, and symphonic and operatic sounds with the fetishistic devotion of Jeff Lynne from ELO is anyone's guess. The last few years have brought more young listeners back to metal, what with all the supposedly "intelligent" and emo metal groups such as Pelican, Mastodon, and Early Man. It's still quite a leap from that to a Norwegian band who prints their lyrics backwards so that they have to be read in the mirror and craft ridiculously dark concept albums about the evils of the Christian church, and how Satanism is so much better. There's no irony here. But there is bombast in just about every conceivable manifestation, delivered beautifully. From the soaring, operatic vocals and live string accompaniment to the beyond-fast riffing and drumming, In Sorte Diaboli is the perfect music to annoy parents and satisfy fans of overindulgence everywhere. --Mike McGonigal

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Its Dimmu Borgir..........2007-06-24

Dimmu Borgir no longer have the Prague Orchestra in their music. Which is a shame because Death Cult Armaggedon was an amazing cd that really opened up the creativity waves of the black metal genre. (Black metal isn't known for creativity) Symphonic Black Metal! With this latest offering: In Sorte Diaboli, they have gone back to the old, old formula of drum and guitar driven melodies with keyboards playing the mere enhancement role.

When I heard The Serpentine Offering for the first time I was blown away. I though to myself, well they've let the real orchestra go but can still make keyboard driven melodies from hell. Well, almost. Thats about the only song that really sticks out in being similiar to what we've come to appreciate about the unique Dimmu Borgir.

With the negatives aside, this album is really really good. It may be a letdown for Symphonic/Metal lovers like me, but as a whole this disc has it all. Hellhammer is back. Enough said. The clean vocals that pop up here and there are refreshing. The guitar/drum work in tandem is top notch. The whole concept of the album is stellar as well.

If you are a Dimmu Borgir fan then you have to get this disc. I did based on the mere fact it was DB. Its a great album but in my opinion a bit of a step back in the creativity department.

3 out of 5 stars Such an amazing band. But this CD is somewhat shameful........2007-06-19

Okay, I know there are going to be a million reviews about the replacement of Nick Barker with Hellhammer on drums. I know, I know. I'm not going to harp on that anymore - it's in plenty of the other reviews here.

I'm concerned with other issues. For instance, the beautiful 30+ piece orchestra used in Death Cult and in Puritanical is absent on this disc! It has all been replaced with a horrible sounding orchestral keyboard patch. Why? They have been rising in the ranks of black metal over the past few years (complete with a spot on the MAIN STAGE in Ozzfest, first black metal band ever with that honor!) and then they take 10 steps backward to this?

I also don't understand why they didn't use the same orchestral arranger as they did on Death Cult... It quickly becomes painfully obvious in the weak arrangements here. Again, why?

I love this band. They are still my all-time favorite black metal band. That is why I hold them to such a high standard. Please guys, get back to the musicality found in your last 2 discs. The future of black metal is depending on it!

5 out of 5 stars Dimmu rides again........2007-06-14

If you are a DB fan, you will love this album. It is amazing how consistently DB produce good music. While In Sorte Diaboli is by no means a dramatic shift in style, it is very entertaining and has so far survived 10 "turns" on my ipod. What is amazing is that the music never gets 'boring' and while you may have seen some of this before, you never have a moment where you feel it. That is the beauty of DB.

I did like Death Cult's orchestra better, which I thought was an amazing achievement. This go around they use the keyboard again. As someone noted earlier, the synths are in the background, with the guitars and Hellhammer's drums pronounced and in front. von Blomberg really adds another layer to the music, distinct from previous releases.

Buy it. You won't be dissapointed. Hopefully you get the US version with the Vengeance is Mine song!

4 out of 5 stars The blackened ones return!!.......2007-06-14

Dimmu Borgir are a great band and they are destined to almost go mainstream unfortunately. It is a mixture of black and symphonic metal like their other releases. Shagrath and David Vincent (Morbid Angel) are my favorite vocalists in metal so they will always get a fairly good rating in my book. Alot of people dig Simens singing on Dimmu Borgirs album because of the contrast between him and Shagrath but I gave them 4 stars for that. I usually fast forward through Simens vocal parts. Its not that he's a bad singer at all but it's like throwing an opera singer into the vein of black metal. Some people really dig it. I guess it depends on your musical flavor.

Every now and again a band capable of not just capturing the spirit of a bygone era but portraying it with uncanny authenticity and accuracy arrives, and in an era where music lovers seem increasingly ravenous for psychedelic-inflected rock, Austin's the Black Angels are precisely that act. Following on the heels of their recent Turn On, Tune In, Drone Out EP, the quintet transports listeners to a land of napalm-bright LSD flashbacks with an elegantly unholy sound that proves both eerie and ethereal. "Young Men Dead" and "The Sniper at the Gates of Heaven" walk the line between celebratory dance and grief-filled dirge. These tracks unnerve the conscious mind with unsettling drones and vocals that seem to have emerged from some parallel universe where the struggle, strife, promise, and even the seedy underbelly of the Love Generation lives on in each primal drum beat and louder-than-loud bent note from a guitar that could not have been built anywhere on Earth, but has been drenched with the sweat and blood of a generation on the verge of either victory or collapse. If there is an act in American popular music with a future brighter and vaster than the cosmos, the Black Angels are it. --Jedd Beaudoin

5 out of 5 stars A Doorway Into Darkness.......2007-06-01

Droning dirges, dark lyrics, desolation, heavy psychedelia... if this is your cup of tea, you will love The Black Angels. Their music evokes a sense of deterioration, a sense of longing, and yet, somehow, a sense of hope. They present a musical vision of hell, and they play as if their lives depend upon finding their way out.

If The Black Angels sound so dire, why do I enjoy their music so much? I have to say it is because they connect with me on a level below that of conscious or rational thought, which leads to "letting go" while listening. They connect with me at gut level, with little or no pretense. The musical arrangements are simple, but beneath the simplicity lies complexity, found in the lyrics, in the reverb-laden production, in the overall sound of quiet desperation that suggests an inner determination to survive the roller-coaster of human emotions in one piece. The musicians present the listener with a universal sort of primal scream, and thus the music has become therapeutic for me with repeated listening.

According to the band credits in the CD, the organist plays "drone machine". From what I could tell when I saw this group play live recently, that is an apt description. Adding to the drone, one band member played an electric sitar. The whole of the sound is very psychedelic, stripping away outer layers of emotions to reveal something much deeper and heavier: reality. The band provides a doorway into darkness. It's like they are describing an emotional worst-case scenario, or a bad trip... but the listener is left with a feeling that maybe life isn't as bad as all that, or that "this too shall pass".

Take a long drive at night, and put this CD in your player. Embrace the darkness of the Black Angels, and be uplifted!

4 out of 5 stars Wow.......2007-05-25

You would think a band that sounds like so many others (BRMC, Dead Meadow, Warlocks, Brian Jonestown Massacre, Spacemen 3) and doesn't really do anything extraordinary musically on its debut full-length would be destined to fail.

Then along come The Black Angels to prove you wrong.

Relying almost entirely on one tempo (plodding), one sound (fuzzy) and one style (60s psych rock filtered through the blues) would seem so plain in any other band's hands, but The Black Angels provide enough youhtful vigor and earnestness in what it is doing to completely floor you.

From start to finish (even on the 'lackluster' cuts like First Vietnamese War and Better Off Alone) The Black Angels pull you up by the nostrils and then drag you through a nigthmarish world that is oh-so-scary because it is real, it is now, and it is here.

Young Men Dead, Sniper at the Gates of Heaven, The Prodigal Sun, Black Grease and Manipulation are great songs sure to stand the test of time. That song about the Vietnam War (One, two, three what are we fightin for....) is good but dates itself; The Blacks Angels deal in pointed criticisms that are vague enough to make sense now or the next time the United States decides to play schoolyard bully and push some poor people around.

The political messages coupled with classic scuzzy blues-based rock mesh into one fine album. Chalk me up for first in line when the next album by The Black Angels comes out.

5 out of 5 stars Do Not "Passover".......2007-04-20

What a wonderful and creative debut. Bottom line: If Jim Morrison were alive today, this is the band he would be in. Be sure to catch them live, they sound great.

5 out of 5 stars absolutely great.......2007-04-04

I really really love this cd.. But If you are not a fan of Psychidelic rock music then this may not be for you.. But if you do! Then i would definetly recommend this cd

4 out of 5 stars The sound of potential.......2007-03-27

There are things that I adore about this record. Overall, the sound is amazing. Big, reverberating, clangy and stoned. The playing is top notch, but it's the lyrics that sometimes make me roll my eyes. While I appreciate a good anti-war song as much as anyone, some of the wording here is just a little corny. I chalk it up to the fact that The Black Angels are a very young band, and just go along for the ride. If these guys keep it up, they have the potential to become one of the best bands around.

Oh yeah- almost every song reminds me of either "The End" or "The Unknown Soldier" by the Doors, but hey, that's not a bad thing.
