The "Golden Age" referred to here spans The Jazz Singer and the advent of the talkies to the death throes of the old studio system in the 1960s. So vast was the era's musical landscape that even this 42-track, double-disc anthology can't encompass all its peaks. Not surprisingly, the bulk of this collection originated with the Tiffany's of the screen musical, M-G-M, a body of work whose riches here encompass both pop-cultural bedrock ("Over the Rainbow," "Singin' in the Rain," "There's No Business Like Show Business," etc.) and some less familiar, if equally delightful star turns: Clark Gable gamely "Puttin' On the Ritz"; the sassy, 1948 original of "The Lady Is a Tramp" by Lena Horne; and a loopy duet of "Baby, It's Cold Outside" by Esther Williams and Ricardo Montalban. Fred Astaire's elegant, epochal reign at RKO and M-G-M is represented by "Night and Day," "Let's Face the Music and Dance," and three others, while Metro mainstays Gene Kelly and Judy Garland share equal time and billing. It's not perfect--Cagney's "Yankee Doodle Boy" and/or some Sinatra seem more logical choices than the odd "bonus" duet of Casablanca's "As Time Goes By" and "Lara's Theme" from Dr. Zhivago that close out disc one--but it's a stunning, surprisingly comprehensive primer on the Hollywood film musical nonetheless. --Jerry McCulley

They were right--there is NO business like the show business they did way back when !!!.......2006-11-18
Everything that happens in life
Can happen in a show
You can make 'em laugh
You can make 'em cry
Anything
Anything can go....
The clown with his pants falling down
Or the dance that's a dream of romance
Or the scene where the villain is mean
That's entertainment!
The lights on the lady in tights
Or the bride with the guy on the side
Or the ball where she gives him her all
That's entertainment!
The plot and the hot simply teeming with $ex
A gay divorcee who is after her ex
It could be Oedipus Rex
Where a chap kills his father
And causes a lot of bother
The clerk who is thrown out of work
By the boss who is thrown for a loss
By the skirt who is doing him dirt
The world is a stage,
The stage is a world of entertainment!
This two CD set amply proves that the musical melodies and lyrics from the golden age of the Hollywood musical remain unsurpassed to this day. This generous two CD set offers 42 incredible songs from Hollywood classic musicals. Most of these fine numbers are indeed from MGM, as Amazon correctly notes; but there are some RKO numbers and even a little from Warner Brothers. Thank goodness, though, that most of these songs came from MGM movies; MGM was the only studio that could boast that it truly had "more stars than there are in the heavens."
I love so many songs on these two CDs. Of course, there's the unforgettable classic "Over The Rainbow" sung by Judy Garland; she also performs "Easter Parade" and "Get Happy" on this two CD set and she carries most of the tune for "I Got Rhythm" even though Mickey Rooney helps her a little. I love "Baby, It's Cold Outside" for its' romantic overtones; and Lena Horne's "The Lady Is A Tramp" is flawless! We also get a rare chance to hear Clark Gable sing in "Puttin' On The Ritz;" and Bing Crosby's "Going Hollywood" may be brief but it's a fun song anyway.
There are two "bonus" tracks on the first CD: "As Time Goes By" from Casablanca and "Lara's Theme" from Doctor Zhivago. "As Time Goes By" is a good choice; it is another unsurpassed classic song that brings back memories and touches even the hardest of hearts. "Lara's Theme," however, is from the mid 1960s and I don't consider this period to be part of the "golden age" of Hollywood musicals.
The liner notes are excellent and they offer wonderful photos of the stars as well. The cover art is well done and the reverse cover art tells which movie each song is from and who is performing each song. Moreover, the quality of the sound is excellent especially when you consider that these numbers were recorded quite a few decades ago.
In short, this superlative two CD highlights the glory of the Hollywood musical when a certain type of sophistication dominated professional movie production. I highly recommend this CD for fans of Hollywood musicals, classic pop vocals and fans of the artists and actors who perform on this two CD set.
One of the best cds I ever bought. .......2006-06-07
What an amazon collection of songs! This is bar none my favorite cd just because of the variety and the quality of songs on it. I love music from this era, and this cd is the perfect companion to my life. Love it! Buy it, you won't regret it for a moment!
Never Sounded Better.......2006-03-16
Apart from the great selection of soundtracks, what really makes this compilation top value is the quality of the sound processing. Executed with finesse, these tracks sound better than when first issued and many are unedited, fuller versions: like "Singing In The Rain", for example. Throw in the great price, and this double disc set is a "must have" for all lovers of classic movie music.

It was once said by the songwriters of that era - "There are two artists you want perform your songs on the big screen, they are Fred Astaire and Judy Garland they sing it just the way we wrote it, for which you will have a guaranteed hit on your hands"...well, this collections certainly has some merit to that statement...because with Judy Garland and Fred Astaire performing seven songs each, there must be something to it.
This collection of musicals still has the magic that we remember from those bygone years...but as long as we have the labels and networks who play and show these wonderful films of yesteryear, they will never be forgotten...hats off to Rhino Records, George Feltenstein (producer) and Doug Schwartz (engineer) and Turner Classic Movies for sharing those 42 selections from 42 films...celebrating decades of the tunes and artists that gave it their all...from what it commonly called "The Hollywood Dream Factory"...The Golden Age of Hollywood Musicals is still among us...gotta love it!

Excellence!.......2007-04-22
These recordings range back to 1994, with a number of tracks being from Silva Screen's "Music from the Films of Clint Eatwood" compilation, with Derek Wadsworth conducting the City of Prague Philharmonic.
Those tracks are: "The Good, The Bad and The Ugly", "A Fistful of DOllars", "For a Few Dollars More", and "Two Mules for Sister Sara". "In The Line Of Fire' also appeared on that CD, performed electronically by Mark Ayres.
The next bunch of tracks is from Silva Screen's 1996 compilation, "Cinema Paradise: The Classic Film Music of Ennio Morricone", which included the majority of tracks here such as the extensive The Mission Suite, The Untouchables, Casulaties of War, Once Upon a Time In America, 1900, Chi Mai, Marco Polo, Once Upon a Time In The West (two tracks), Cinema Paradise, and The Good the Bad and the Ugly - Ecstacy of Gold, mostly being conducted by Paul Bateman, with Nic Raine doing some of the conducting duties as well.
Hamlet is from Silva's 1997 "Cinema's Classic Romances" compilation, while "The Thing" is from Silva's 2001 "Essential John Carpenter".
A Fistful of Dynamite - Duck You Sucker is from 2002's Way Out West: Essential Western Film Music Collection Volume Two.
The remaing tracks were newly recorded in 2004 for this release:
Days of Heaven, Exorcist II, Guns for San Sebastian, Moses the Lawgiver, My Name is Nobody, The Five Man Army, The Red Tent, The Men From Shiloh and The Sicilian Clan.
Highly recommended.
"his domain of film scoring is legendary ~ Ennio Morricone".......2004-10-07
Silva America once again has outdone themselves with "Once Upon A Time:The Essential Ennio Morricone Film Music Collection", a double disc collection worth their weight in GOLD! ~ Morricone creates visual moods for each film he scores...action, adventure, mystery, romance, sentimental and suspense...the list could go on.
Ennio Morricone was born in Rome on October 11, 1928...attended the Santa Cecilia Conservatory...worked in various jazz bands, later a staff arranger and composer...an orchestrator in the '50s...scored films in the early '60s, then the WESTERNS and his name became a household word in the film industry ~ a new kind of western was on the horizon and Morricone was commissioned to score "A FISTFUL OF DOLLARS" [1964] for Sergio Leone featuring Clint Eastwood, spaghetti westerns were born ~ next "FOR A FEW DOLLARS MORE" [1965] ~ and a bigger budget film "THE GOOD, THE BAD AND THE UGLY" [1966], again featuring Clint Eastwood, Lee Van Cleef and a third Eli Wallach whose performance was magical to watch on the big screen ~ violence and revenge gives Morricone an opportunity to feature electric guitars, flutes and jew's harp blending with a non lyrical chorus mixed with brass, strings, percussion with full orchestration that simply took your breath away...example is "ONCE UPON A TIME IN THE WEST" [1968], featuring Henry Fonda, Claudia Cardinale, Jason Robards and our hero Charles Bronson the mysterious harmonica player, director Sergio Leone's tribute to the American Western, pulled out all the stops ~ the Western was just a small part of Maestro Morricone's career, in the next paragraph take a gander of just what our icon of film music accomplished.
Our composer didn't stop there as "ONCE UPON A TIME IN AMERICA" [1984], featuring Robert De Niro, James Woods and Elizabeth McGovern, another Sergio Leone film..."THE MISSION" [1986], featuring Robert De Niro, Jeremy Irons and Aldan Quinn, is probably one of Morricone's crowning scores receiving an Academy Award nomination, very haunting and classical genre in substance..."THE UNTOUCHABLES" [1987], featuring Kevin Costner, Sean Connery and Robert De Niro during the Al Capone '30s crime organization, Morricone conjures a powerful and dynamic arrangement of his unmistakable theme..."CINEMA PARADISO" [1988], featuring Phillippe Noiret, Antonella Attili and Pupella Maggio from director Giuseppe Tomatore as he recalls his early childhood, the score immediately captures your heart, so tender and compelling as Morricone can only deliver.
City of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra featuring conductors Kenneth Alwyn, Paul Bateman, James Fitzpatrick, Nic Raine, Derek Wadsworth ~ Crouch End Festival Chorus featuring Choir Master David Temple ~ vocals performed by Charlotte Kinder, Marie Kopecka and Jill Washington ~ guitar, percussion and keyboards performed by Gareth Williams ~ all in all did a magnicent job in bringing the music of a composer who wrote for over 250 films, receiving recognition from the industry and fans which was long over-due ~ his work is in constant demand, scoring as many as over a half dozen films as year.
This collection contains an overlay of each cue in Morricone's distinctive style of legendary scoring ~ the man who made this possible, a tremendous asset to every project he undertakes is James Fitzpatrick [producer of the album] ~ symphonic suites with full orchestra fullfilling the "film-score-buffs" cravings for more of the same, just the way we like 'em!

Red Rockers Good As Gold.......2007-01-07
This album is as good as gold. Of course China is the hit but Good as gold is also a catchy tune. The Red Rockers define a style all there own. This is a must have for any fan of 80's Music.
first major label release to an american clash.......2006-10-10
anyone who has ever heard the first red rockers lp "condition red" would not be lying if they were to tell you that the band put out a solid punk rock album that could only be upstaged by the clashes debut lp out of the u.k..it was full of teen angst and rebelion, songs like guns of revolution ,teenage undergrounnd and the johnny cash classic folsum county blues made this underated groups first lp a classic however it was overlooked by many and became hard to find as a collecter it took me 20+ years to get ahold of it andit was everything i ever thought it would be and more.
good as gold was the bands first major label release.there sound differed from the pure punk sound of condition red but yet still plowed away with ferocity with a western sound that was very refreshing in the very heavy synthetic early 80's.
there is not one track on this lp that is not outstanding in its own right and the band even scored a minor hit due to heavy airplay by the fledgling new music channel mtv,the song was china and whether you liked punk, new wave, rock n roll you could not deny that the band had a well crafted pop song on there hands.unfortunately they were thrown in too the one hit wonders catalog and forgotten.
when U2 broke big in the usa on the unforgettable fire tour the red rockers opened up for U2 on the first or second leg of the tour,im not sure wich but as i watched them intensly two consecutive nites in a row i relized how unappreciated this band was, they played with passion and there leader john griffith came out for a encore, not that the crowd demanded one as the band practically went unoticed as the happening thing was U2 at the moment and he gets on stage alone and does an accoustic version of john lennons "imagine" that broght tears to my eyes.i knew right there this band is special and now over 20+ years later there three lps condition red, good as gold and schitzophenic circus are all in my top ten to twenty lps of all time.i also noted on that night my passion for U2 diminished as they were so special for boy, october and war,on that tour they lost something,at that time U2 was may top band and i traveled to see them over 12 timmes on that tour and the spontanuity was a act, they were never the same to this day.
the red rockers any one of there 3 lps pick any and youll pick a winner.well crafted songs from punk to pop to rock to new wave this band was magic and even though china is a one hit wonder its still wonderfull, pull up the video for it on [...]under keyword red rockers, scroll down and you can see the boys in action back in 83,its a blast, good as gold is as good as gold and you cant miss with the red rockers, solid through and through!!!!!!!!!!!

Customer Reviews:
Cerquetti's Abigaille.......2003-09-06
First off, it should be known to the potential buyer that these are HIGHLIGHTS only. The mono sound is acceptable. Orchestra and chorus are average at best. The focus clearly is on Anita Cerquetti and her rendition of Abigaille. Even though in the booklet listing of tracks her name is omitted on the last cue point. I never heard this singer live. My first encounter with her voice was the studio GIOCONDA with del Monaco and Simionato and I liked it very much. As Abigaille I find her less convincing. The voice is beautiful and even. But she cannot convey Abigaille's high flying ambitions. She sounds noble most of the time. Never aggressive or infuriated or spiteful or menacing. Her repentance/dying scene is superficial. Which makes me wonder how often Miss Cerquetti may have had the chance to sing this role during her brief career and develop a feeling for it. At times she unexpectedly breaks a phrase to catch her breath, which I find somewhat irritating. And some climax seem "rushed". It's also a bit disappointing to me that the "Salgo gia" cabaletta gets no repeat. Guess such were the customs in those years, even for concert performances. I am pleased with Messrs. Dondi (in the title role) and Trama. Aside from their vocal qualities I find them very much in character. Also the singers of Fenena and Ismaele made me prick up my ears. Taken all in all, it's worthwhile to have this document. It will nicely supplement your studio NABUCCO. It's been a guilty pleasure of mine to compare Anita Cerquetti to Elena Suliotis and Dino Dondi to Tito Gobbi. And I wish that one day the Metropolitan Opera's NABUCCO with Leonie Rysanek under the baton of Thomas Schippers will appear on CD.
Good soloists, mediocre chorus, mono recording.......2002-10-24
The soloists are very good, but the chorus (key in this opera) is not on the same level. "Va Pensiero", the famous chorus piece, is very weakly done. The mono recording is only just adequate, OK for the soloists but flat and dull for stage presence and orchestration.
Blistering Vocalism.......2001-02-23
I first heard this rare pearl over 20 years ago on some faded third-generation cassette. Despite the dim sonics, I was thrilled to hear a diva who could actually negotiate the scorching roulades of Abigaille's music while still sounding like a singer and not some wounded forest creature howling in pain. Apart from Callas' live performance, we've had precious little to celebrate in recorded Abigailles. Sure, Scotto lit a few fires with her EMI pressing, but who wouldn't with a microphone clenched betweeen her teeth and the volume control nailed in place at the top of the control panel? For Heaven's sake, most of the current generation of half-wit dimpled divettes and "sound-enhanced" melody muffins could come off like an Abigaille with the right studio wizards calling the shots.
Cerquetti was the REAL thing. Like Margharita Roberti (listen to her in Christoff's ATTILA recording), Caterina Mancini and Fedora Barbieri, she came from a school of barnstormers who could shake the foundations of San Carlo or La Scala with truly schooled, crafted voices that emanated from the viscera and not the top of the larynx. Cerquetti was one of the Queens of Can Belto, and this new release in great sound is one of the treasures among re-releases of the past decade. I cast aside all conservatory terminology and call this type of performance a ripsnorter for the ages. With Callas, Cerquetti, and Dimitrova on disc, and the rare likes of Linda Roark-Strummer performing the role onstage, the other studio bunnies can turn their attention to gentler repertoire and give the rest of us a break.
Glorious Cerquetti in very good Nabucco.......2000-07-19
With the exception of the famous Hebrew's choir 'Va pensiero', the number of recordings of 'Nabucco' is notably low. One possible reason is the extraordinary vocal demand of the female leading role, King Nabucco's daughter Abigaille. Very few sopranos have succeeded with this difficult role: Maria Callas, Elena Suliotis, Renata Scotto, Ghena Dimitrova (arguably the best). Now we have a live recording of the great Italian soprano Anita Cerquetti, and she is probably so good as Dimitrova. Cerquetti was one of the greatest sopranos of the century, although she had an astonishingly short carreer (she retired at the age of 30!). Most of her (scarce) recordings are live performances, so having any single piece of recording of her extraordinary voice is a real must. This Nabucco was one of the last documents of her operatic carreer, and here she sounds so splendid that it remains a mystery why she decided to give up singing so soon afterwards. The rest of the cast is very good, especially the bass Ugo Trama as the High Priest Zaccaria. Dino Dondi is a good Nabucco, but his interpretation of the title role is not a reference. The orchestra sounds well, and the choir efficiently provides the necessary support. The quality of sound is good for the time (1960). To Summarize: This incredibly low priced recording has an adequate combination of the elements needed for a good Nabucco: A very good choir, an excellent bass (Trama), a good baritone (Dondi) and a star of stars as princess Abigail: the great soprano Anita Cerquetti. Enjoy it!
Verdi at the most exciting way!.......2000-01-05
You have to buy this recording! Cerquetti is our and Verdi's dreams Abigaille! If you really are an opera fan or have any concern about Verdi you need this recording. Go for it!

Shared the same Stage.......2006-02-20
I had the pleasure of playing with these guys in Boston a few times. Popping in the cd's makes me 20 again. Very Heady Days !!!
calling out to a mystery.......2003-05-12
When CHINA first came out I was hooked!Fantastic song!I was a young kid then, never had any money,so I bought the 45.I played it like crazy and read about them in Cream magazine. They said they started as a punk band and the angry "b"side of the 45 VOICE OF AMERICA attested to that ethic.Well, many years later I'm an adult and can afford albums(CDs,in this case)and was delighted when I saw this sitting there. This CD has both their big label LPs,and are both excellent new wave pop rock that will have you humming.Someday I hope to hear their punk records.A great band!
Must Have for New Wave Fans.......2003-03-13
As someone lucky enough to be old enough to remember seeing these guys live in the 80's, I can vouch for this CD's quality. Unfortunately, their only hit was China, minor as it was, but every track is a nugget to be cherished. In New Orleans, even the "new rock" stations occasionally dust this one off... And by all means, keep NEW WAVE alive!
RED ROCKERS WILL ALWAYS REMIND ME OF THE 80'S.......2002-12-12
The Red Rockers music was simple and hit to the heart. Not trying to be the "hair bands" of the era, Their sound was unique and refreshing. The lyrics of their own songs may seem depressing but mark the time they were written and are always memorable. The cover songs they did are incredible and in my opinion much better than the originals
Some Great 80's Rock.......2000-10-10
This CD compiles both of the group's mid-80s releases in their entirety. Aside from "China," which was a minor hit on some hipper radio stations of the period, Red Rockers were largely and unjustly ingnored by radio and left undiscovered by the general public. The first CD, "Good As Gold," features sparely produced power-pop with ringing guitars and briskly rhythmic tempos. Their second, "Schizophrenic Circus," is an entirely different beast altogether, going more for big anthemic rockers with a titanic drum sound...somewhat reminiscent of Big Country or a less-pretentious U2 of the same period.
Both CDs are equally enjoyable in their own right, each with their share of standout tracks. Good As Gold has the aforementioned "China," while Schizophrenic Circus boasts "Just Like You" and "Blood From A Stone." But there's really not a clinker on either CD...both are solid and hold up nicely to repeated listenings. The songs sound undated and truly timeless.
Worth discovering (or re-discovering) if you enjoy first-rate rock with a thinking-man's twist.

The film that took the 1989 Special Jury Prize at Cannes, Cinema Paradiso features a promising collaboration between il Maestro Ennio Morricone and director Giuseppe Tornatore. Essentially a bittersweet love letter to the enchantment of the cinema-going experience, "Paradiso" offers the melodic and romantic side of Morricone at his peak. The story line gratifyingly calls for Morricone to musically encapsulate a broad range of historic film music, from the orchestral grandeur of Golden Age Hollywood to the Neopolitan jazz of Rota and Fellini, which he does with typically brilliant panache. Telling fact: the main theme is so memorable it was recently co-opted for a car commercial! --Jerry McCulley
Customer Reviews:
music great but performance weak.......2000-07-01
I love the music of E.Morricone, and bought this disk since it had so many titles that I wanted. But although the songs are great, I found the performances - by the city of prague philharmonic - to be quite weak. There is very little emotion conveyed - and the emotion is what makes E.M.'s music so compelling. Even worse, the performance differs from what you remember in the movies - e.g. the good bad and ugly track had no chorus (no grunts); the mission soundtrack sounds like a symphonic rendition without the catholic power. Stick to the original soundtracks.
Excellent Versions of Classic Themes.......2000-06-28
This CD features new orchestral arrangements of Morricone's most famous themes. It's a very interesting album and even if one prefers to quirky original recordings of his western scores (like I do) it's still well worth a listen. (The only reason I'm giving this Four Stars is because some of the personality of the themes hasn't quite translated to some of the versions on this collection.)
The versions of "Two Mules for Sister Sara" and "For a Few Dollars More" are particularly well presented. However, if you're looking for some of Morricone's original recordings, I recommend you pick up "A Fistful of Morricone."
Il magnificio.......2000-05-25
I haven't heard this album, but I know all the tracks very well. I grew up with Ennio Morricone and as such I know this would be an essential for anyone who is not fully aware of the genius this man has brought to movie scores for four decades now. Check "Estasia del'oro" on this CD to find out what I mean!
This is not original music of Ennio Morricone.......1998-12-19
This cd represent a compilation of various tracks by Ennio Morricone and contains very popular themes. I give only 2 stars, because the music is poor compared to the original version composed by Ennio Morricone.
great sounding music from various films.......1998-08-22
This cd is a great compilation of various tracks by film composer Ennio Morricone. While the music is wonderful, only one of the tracks is from the specific film of Cinema Paradiso (despite the name of this CD). If you are mainly interested in that film, there's a complete soundtrack to it also available at amazon.

A GOOD ONE FROM THE MONEY MAN!.......2002-07-03
Eddie Money has made many good albums in his time, and he has had many hit songs. On this CD, two of his most popular songs, "Two Tickets To Paradise" and "Take Me Home Tonight", are included. However, what really attracted me to this CD was the fact that it is full of lesser known BUT JUST AS GOOD Eddie Money songs. Songs like "Hard Life" and "Back On the Road" are excellent. My personal favorite on this CD is the wonderful upbeat song called "Trinidad." It alone is worth the price of the CD. As the title suggests, this CD really is "Good as Gold." BRAVO, EDDIE MAHONEY!
