Customer Reviews:
It's a Movie Soundtrack not a Mars Volta album.......2007-06-06
Before you base your judgment of this CD soley in comparison to any of The Mars Volta albums you need to realize that it isn't a Mars Volta album. It is a Soundtrack for a film and Omar is even quoted by saying it is a reaction to the film. If you're a die-hard Omar fan then you'll love it. Rapid Fire Toll Booth is now one of my all time favorites and all the other songs sound great in my opinion.
I don't usually write reviews because it's so painful for me to read someone elses review especialy ones that contain the following examples. I only like their older stuff, they keep changing their style, the guitar player is too self induldgent, they should use the same producer as on their first album, there's too much ambience, there's too much guitar noodling, they've become snobs, they're not as good without the old drummer, they're progressive, they're experimental, they took a riff from some other band, I like them less with each album they put out, etc. That was in reference to all bands not just The Mars Volta.
That kinda review irritates me because it's a bunch of garbage. I wish those kinda people would just stick to their MTV lifestyles and leave the real music to those who are true fans and are more open minded. I don't know why it bugs me so much it's not like I'm defending them because I know them on some personal level it's just that some people just don't get it. I'm tired of everyone disecting the music and the musicians. All they want to do is entertain us, not create some sort of musical doctorine that should be discussed as though one was attending a seminar. As a musician I understand the need to experiment and branch out so the music making process doesn't become stale. Do you really want your favorite band to constantly repeat themselves and never evolve. People please I beg of you quit writing these cliche pointless reviews. As for me I'm through writting about this subject for as long as I live. Omar & Cedric have been making music for quite some time now. Let's allow the professionals to do their thing and the rest of you can either tune in or tune out.
Feels Like Half of an Album.......2007-06-01
I've been a fairly faithful Mars Volta fan since the band's first LP debuted back in 2003. However, to say that my admiration for the group has never wavered would be a lie. In fact, with each full-length album that the Mars Volta releases, my love for the band deteriorates just a little bit more. This downward trend is caused largely by the group's insistence on forgoing the largely prog-rock stylings of their debut in favor of more experimental paths. The "Hey, instead of a song, let's just play random crap for 8 minutes" approach was fresh on 2005's "Frances the Mute" but it felt unbelievably stale on their most recent album, "Amputechture." It should be of no surprise then that "Se Dice Bisconte, No Buffalo" is not my favorite of albums. In many ways this album is the embodiment of everything that I've grown to despise about the Mars Volta.
That's not to say that this is an unimpressive collection of songs, however. Quite the opposite! Despite my waning feelings for Omar and Cedric, I can still recognize talent when I hear it. It's just that the talent of these two individuals has been misplaced in recent years. "Buffalo" is just another example of that. For example, the first two tracks on the album "The Lukewarm" and "Luxury of Infancy" are utter throwaways. The first being a 26 second exercise in changing the pitch of your voice, while the second is just more of Omar's signature electric guitar "scribbling." These two tracks serve no purpose on the album whatsoever, as they're pretty much over before you realize it.
"Rapid Fire Tollbooth" may sound familiar to Mars Volta fans who have been to the band's live shows. Cedric Bixler-Zavala lends his vocals here, and as a result the song sounds very much like a Mars Volta song that couldn't find a home on "Amputechture." In fact, several of the songs on "Buffalo" that features Cedric's vocals sound like they were made during the production of that album, but just weren't good enough to make the cut ("Se Dice Bisonte, No Buffalo," and "Please Heat This Eventually" to be precise). "La Tirania De La Tradicion," on the other hand, is a fantastic song, and the highlight of the album. In this frantic 5-minute long song, Cedric's vocals are all over the place, and the end result is amazing!
In the end, the best moments on "Se Dice Bisconte, No Buffalo" are the ones where Omar and company play actual music as opposed to just random noise. Tracks like "The Lukewarm," "Luxury of Infancy," and "If Gravity Lulls, I Can Hear the World Pant" only serve as a reminder to how self-indulgent these musicians can be. However there are a few others that remind you why you fell in love with these guys in the first place. As a result, "Buffalo" feels more like half of an album than anything else. While some devoted fans may find it to be worthy of a purchase, I'd be much more inclined to download my favorite tracks and live out my life pretending that the others don't exist.
Recommended for fans of The Mars Volta and the Omar Rodriguez Lopez Quintet.

If one needed further proof of the contemporary revival/reassessment of the ambitiously overwrought sensibilities once so reviled in '70s rock, this aggressively mindbending second album by the Mars Volta offers it up in spades. Band mainstays Omar Rodriguez-Lopez and Cedric Bixler-Zavala insist that labels like "prog" don't interest them, and that this is emphatically not a "sequel" to 2003's De-Loused in the Comatorium. What it is was thematically inspired by a stranger's diary allegedly found by late bandmate Jeremy Ward, the basis for an expansive, often amorphous musical head-trip that brews psychedelia, trance, hard-rock and free-jazz into a daunting new whole. The dozen tracks here represent but five "songs" proper, though the band's disdain for conventional track banding inspire it to sound more like a stream-of-consciousness soundscape from Can--or a dark, lyrically inventive, if decidedly troubled corner of their ids. On the "Umbilical Syllables" portion of "Cygnus.." and "The Widow" Bixler-Zavala invokes the wailing, Led Zeppelin II & III spirit of Robert Plant set against a feverish, swirling melange that's anything but the blues. The vocalist coaxes "L' Via l'Viaquez" en Espanol, while his band indulges its space-mambo conceits with an evocative spirit that recalls Latin Playboys at their most mischievous. It's an album that loops back on itself in a haunting ellipse--and one whose boundless ambition makes Pink Floyd sound like three-chord bar punters by comparison. --Jerry McCulley

Melodic sonic boom !.......2007-06-08
If you want to hear some amazing song structures, melodies and all around great rock musicians Jon Theodore to Omar Gonzalez and even John Fruscante, get this album. Once you get through the few dead spots and few moments of senseless noise, this will be placed in your heavy rotation of favorite music. Cedric Bixler is one of the most amazing modern rock singers out there today.
very cool.......2007-03-08
i reviewed de loused in the comatorium and thought this deserved a review as well. the mars volta is so different from most other music out there and the first time i heard them i was hooked. i would suggest listening to some tracks before buying because the vocals aren't for everyone. i once heard someone say, "the vocals are like nails on a chalkboard", and i will admit they are not for everyone. i personally took to them and consider TMV one of my favorites these days.
musicians from mars.......2007-02-20
Put together Miles Davis' "Bitches Brew", Led Zeppelin's "II" and "III", and King Crimson's "In The Court of King Crimson", and you get "Frances The Mute". My favorite Mars Volta album so far, but all of them are amazing. Could be very very strange for listeners who never listened to this kind of music. To me, this album resembles "Bitchs Brew" alot (not just in the music itself, but the way it was received by the public - you either hate it or love it).
The closest you will get to the best music ever invented........2007-02-15
The Mars Volta has an uncanny way of taking old rock styles, jazz, even metal in some light, and making it new, better and more amazing than it could've ever gotten without them. They have brought Pink Floyd back together metaphorically speaking, as well as led-zeppelin, countless jazz bands, and anything else holy in music except for a low voice and brought it to the public. Ever instrument played is played to its fullest in some form or another, and even the computerized parts tie it all together. This album is a monument to what is good in music, and its a damn shame they had to take it all apart for "Amputechture."

Although this is officially singer/fiddler Carrie Rodriguez's solo debut, her musical mentor Chip Taylor--with whom she has recorded three previous discs of duets--is an integral ingredient. Taylor wrote or co-wrote all but one track and is also the album's producer. With Seven Angels on a Bicycle, the partnership that worked so well on Red Dog Tracks, The Trouble With Humans, and Let's Leave This Town has yielded another winner. The songs shift between folk, country, and even jazz, the latter aided by the amazing Bill Frisell, whose delicate, restrained textures and effects create an introspective mood as much as Rodriguez's lovely, sensitive voice. Much of this atmospheric release floats by with barely-there percussion, haunting tunes, and a languid yet exquisite sense of subtlety rare in contemporary music. Rodriguez goes into hoedown mode only once--on the frisky "Never Going to Be Your Bride"--but her fiddle colors these songs in muted shades that perfectly enhance their emotional concerns. She's a stirring singer--somewhat like Suzanne Vega--whose vocal innocence in tracks like "This Kiss" provides a perfect counterpoint for lyrics predominantly concerned with lost love and lovers. This is a stark, beautiful set of pensive songs that results in a low-key jewel of an album made for listening, not dancing. The talented Rodriguez needs no further proof that she is very much ready for prime time. --Hal Horowitz

how low can you go.......2006-12-11
I have never heard such a boring, monotone style. This music is absolutely depressing.Music is supposed to make you feel good, not down.
This is "art" music, not real music. This could be one of the worst choices I have made in contempopary music.
Future Star.......2006-12-10
I'm new to Carrie Rodriguez, never have listened to her colaborations with Chip Taylor. I read a review somewhere on this release and took a chance.....very glad I did. I just can't get this one out of my CD player. For someone who hasn't been the lead singer very long, she nails it!! Clear distinct voice. Love the music, not your ordinary country sound at all. Can't wait for more from Carrie...alone.

Sublime, delightful, a masterpiece.
A perfect work of Carrie, Frisell, Leisz and the rest of musicians.

A Texas Fiddler Expands Her Horizons .......2006-10-12
Carrie Rodriguez is well known to me because of three excellent CD's she made with her collaborator and mentor, Chip Taylor, songwriter, professional gambler, and uncle of Angelina Jolie. The style of the two was mostly down-home folk and country. Carrie's Texas fiddle and twangy voice fit the music.
This CD is a stretch for Carrie. Most of the songs are more cosmic than country -- with a bit of India, jazz, and techno-pop. I like the songs best where her twang comes through most strongly with a background of guitar and banjo that could have been arranged by Ravi Shankar. (My wife, however, doesn't like this CD -- although she much enjoys the Taylor/Rodriguez collaborations.) Down home pickin' and Carrie's bluegrass fiddle really come to the fore only on "Never Gonna be Your Bride" and "I Don't Want to Play House Anymore" which may be the best song on the CD.
If you're a country fan you might test drive your taste for this by previewing "Seven Angels on a Bicycle" which is typical of the album as a whole. I like most of the tracks -- although some are a bit draggy and an additional uptempo number or two might have made the CD even stronger. On first listen, I like this CD, and Carrie's new direction. I'll see how it ages.

They did it again.......2007-06-13
The Mars Volta puts out some of the most complex, thought-provoking, and lyrically charged music that I have heard in the last 10 years. The beauty of their style is that it can't be criticized, because they don't claim to be a part of any genre...it is simply music at its rawest core element.
In line with this description, Amputechture delivers just as much, if not more, than their previous offerings. It's style is unpredictable, yet captivating. The jazz influence can be heard in almost every track. Some songs verge on becoming monotonous, until a slight riff change or new vocal is thrown in at exactly the right moment, and makes it perfect.
Their total disregard for "what sells" and making chart-topping music is probably what keeps their music fresh and innovative. This is easily the best album of 2006 if you're into non-mainstream, real music. Otherwise, go buy Incubus/Maroon 5/Weezer or something.
These guys were "punk".......2007-06-13
Sounds like the singer got his nutz caught in a meat grinder. I love high pitched singers voices but this guy has to go. Music is o.k. but super wanky without enough substance to make it worth the while. Take 'em or leave 'em kids, you know where I stand.
Welcome back, Mars........2007-04-17
This album redeemed them for Frances.
A continuation of The Mars Volta's stunning innovation, while not straying too far from their classic style. There is a stunning new touch in this album: "Asilos Magdalena", a heart-wrenching, tragic, spanish ballad, as tonal as they come, with the strongest cadential points heard in any of the albums thus far.
The album is a continuous study of Cedric's impressive (awe-inspiring) range, the band's famous stepwise bass lines, super-rhythmic melodies set to abnormal meters, and beautifully incoherent (though barely dissonant) guitar riffs.
The lyrics continue to shock, strewn with raw physical imagery of both human and animal body parts (see: album title "amputechture", song titles "viscera eyes" and "vermicide", and cover art), and Christian-dogmatic references/commentary (see: song titles "vicarious atonement" and "day of the baphomets").
Deloused set our expectations high, but the true fan will not be disappointed in Amputechture.
Good Album.......2007-02-17
I like this recording very much. The Mars Volta has a fantastic approach to music making. They are creative with effects and have long jam sessions with very good playing. Like a modern, more heavy metal Pink Floyd, innovative and slow burning. Doesn't get boring or start sounding the same half way through the album.

This Robert Rodriguez-written-and-directed half of Grindhouse, his and Quentin Tarantino's $50+ million valentine to '70s exploitation fare, turns on the typically over-the-top tale of a go-go dancer (Rose McGowan) whose severed leg is replaced by an assault weapon-cum-prosthetic. But unlike the typically frenzied stew of pop gems, vintage soundtrack obscurities, and dizzy oddities Tarantino uses to score his Death Proof half of the project, Rodriguez continues his John Carpenter-inspired habit of writing and performing the music for his. Anchored by a snarling, guitar-driven instrumental title theme that sounds like it was piped in straight from a strip club in Hades, the director's score is a gritty, frequently metal-driven sonic m#233;lange. Previous musical cohort Graeme Revell again collaborates on a handful of tracks (with additional contributions from Carl Thiel, George Oldziey, and Rick Del Castillo), and there are moments that instantly recall their dank work on Sin City, particularly the throbbing sax-uality of "Grindhouse Blues." Star McGowan contributes a trio of languorously wasted vocal turns on a cover of "You Belong to Me" and the alternately electro-clubby/flamencoesque Rodriguez originals "Useless Talent #42" and "Two Against the World." Completing the score's evocative musical recipe, Nouvelle Vague offer up a breathy, tongue-in-cheek cover of the Dead Kennedys' "Too Drunk to Fuck" while Chingon turns in a searing, Latin-metal fusion take of Rodriguez's own "Cherry's Dance of Death." --Jerry McCulley
Album Description
"Grind House" - noun - A downtown movie theater -- in disrepair since its glory days as a movie palace of the '30s and '40s -- known for "grinding out" non-stop double-bill programs of B-movies. From groundbreaking directors Quentin Tarantino and Robert Rodriguez comes the ultimate film experience: a double-bill of thrillers that will recall both filmmakers' favorite exploitation films. GRIND HOUSE will be presented as one full-length feature comprised of two individual films helmed separately by each director. Tarantino's film, Death Proof, is a rip-roaring slasher flick where the killer pursues his victims with a car rather than a knife, while Rodriguez's film explores an alien world eerily familiar to ours in Planet Terror. Welcome to the grind house -- it'll tear you in two.
The riveting score for GRIND HOUSE is by Rodriguez himself.

Not A "Tarantino" Soundtrac.......2007-05-15
Robert Rodriguez makes really good movies and he definitely is a good "guitar" player. But, these recent soundtracks are not what we got with "Desperado" or "From Dusk to Dawn". I mean this soundtrack is just that, "soundtrack sounds and riffs" from the movie. They work good in the movie, but your not going to want to listen to them on their own. Totally unlike a "Tarantino" soundtrack that has actual "songs" on it by artists that you will want to listen to separate of the movie. I'm a "guitar player" and although I respect Robert Rodriguez as a guitar player, I'll probably never buy one of his "soundtracks" again. What's the point, just watch the movie.
Awesome movie... awesome soundtrack!.......2007-04-27
Anyone who went to see Grindhouse and is now looking at the soundtrack for Planet Terror, I know exactly why you're either thinking of or already have purchased it. It's because of the main title theme. Quite possibly one of the coolest movie themes ever composed.
I'll spare you a detailed report of the CD. It's awesome. Possibly one of the best movie soundtracks ever composed, beats out the Sin City soundtrack... something I previously didn't think was possible. A must have for any music fans!
Some Great Hard Jams And A Cool Throwback To An Era.......2007-04-14
The joint film venture by Robert Rodriguez and Quentin Tarantino, "Grindhouse," is a throwback to the cult classic grindhouse movies of the 70s and 80s, it is only fitting that the musical score does the same. But like the movie itself, the music is both an update and a throwback. For "Planet Terror" Robert Rodriguez, the one-man film production crew, again takes composing duties upon himself as he did in "Sin City." Along with some guest work by Graeme Revell and the band Chingon, Rodriguez captures both tne synth feel of the 80s horror film scores and produces some hard rockin' jams that stand on their own. "Grindhouse (Main Titles)" is a scorching opening with a raunchy sax and ripping, flamenco Arabic guitar that sets the tone for "Planet Terror," this is like stripper music from hell and indeed, Rodriguez's on set love interest, Rose McGowan, does a great go-go dance number to this song in the opening titles of the film. Other tracks like "Hospital Epidemic" and "His Prescription" capture that synthesized feel of the old horror movies with a fan boy's glee. "Useless Talent #32" and "You Belong To Me" feature McGowan singing. She has a wonderfully sexy, deep voice with a jazzy feel. She also croons on "Two Against The World." What Rodriguez shows here is a real sense of good film scoring, much of this material can sometimes even feel a little too elevated for a grindhouse flick. Rodriguez in the past has provided great music for "Kill Bill Vol. 2" and his own "Once Upon A Time In Mexico," both featured great songs and again, a kind of musical emotion sometimes too grand or too well-assembled for what Rodriguez's films deserve. It's almost as if the man is a popcorn filmmaker with the soul of a true musician inside. His guitar playing in "Planet Terror" is awesome with notes that glide, slide and rip hard. Fans will not be disappointed, the soundtrack is campy, fun, exciting and expertly produced and played. "Planet Terror" delivers more than what you would expect.
The soundtrack to "Grindhouse: Planet Terror" is great!.......2007-04-08
The soundtrack to "Grindhouse: Planet Terror" is great! The score by Robert Rodriguez is excellent. Great music from a great movie.

Really Moving !.......2007-02-02
Slight disappointment on the lack of mariachi, however, solid musical enjoyment. But, also came with a bonus DVD featuring material of Del Castillo, and those guitars are just incredibly riveting, and so hot. Wow!
Fabulous not-quite-a-soundtrack soundtrack.......2007-01-04
If you enjoyed the El Mariachi movies by Robert Rodriguez, then you'll love this CD. I bought it for two tracks and ended up really enjoying the whole CD. Like the title of the CD says, it's not all soundtracks from the movies but it' worth buying if you love the genre.
Great for Rodriguez Fans.......2006-03-11
This is a good compilation. If you're looking for the song that Antonio Banderas plays to the kid in Desperado, this has the full version. Mostly good songs, but a few that aren't amazing. There's a few songs that supposedly inspired the story, but really aren't near as good as the rest. If you like the "epic mexican spaghetti western" sound of Rodriguez's stuff then this is good to have. And I think some of it is previously unreleased, so if you've got all the other soundtracks, this should be next on the list. Good stuff for a Rodriguez fan, or even just someone that's into the unique style.
captivating.......2005-07-11
I came across this album after watching Kill Bill V2. The song that starts just prior to the closing credits (and continues through the credits) is Malagueña Salerosa and I just had to know more about this song. As a result, I discovered this CD. As it turns out, Robert Rodriguez did the score for Kill Bill V2 and I subsequently have come to discover what a creative talent this man is. I heartily recommend the book "Rebel without a Crew," which I recently read. It is Robert's story behind making El Mariachi (I have also posted a review of that book).
Anyway, the CD is fabulous. I don't know Mariachi music all that well, but this seems to me to be more a fusion of Mariachi with some rock flavors. I have played this CD many many times in succession and there are some absolute gems in here.
When I ordered this from Amazon, I was unaware a DVD bonus was included with the CD. This has some nice live footage and an "interview" with Robert. The interview is in quotes because it is basically Robert setting up a camera in his home studio at 4 a.m. and filming himself. What a treat!
I hope you enjoy it as much as I have.
Not Much "Mariachi", But...........2004-12-15
I bought this CD on the strength of my knowledge of some of the musicians hoping to find a sleeper. And I did! The problem for the record company is how to get music stores to put it where it will be found by the "right" people, that is those with an adventurous taste in music who are not afraid to cross over into music sung in a language other than English. Waterloo Records in Austin long ago figured out how to reach that type of listener and so this is a hot seller in Austin. But what about the rest of the US?
It would surely be a mistake to put this in the mariachi section. Not that no one looks for mariachi records, but that strict mariachi aficionados would likely not accept this as representative of the genre. Mexico and Mariachis contains not much "mariachi" at all, but it does offer the listener a splendid array of tunes that range from rock to cumbia, with a few songs in English even thrown in!
I like the whole CD, but my favorites are Chingon's rendition of Malaguena Salerosa, the magnificent ballad Alacran y Pistolero featuring Tito Larriva, the Crusados' Flor de Mal, the Iguanas' excellent cumbia Por Mi Camino, Del Castillo's Spanish Castle Tango, and Los Lobos with the old standard Volver, Volver.
There is truly a lot of great musicianship here. Don't be put off by the title if your idea of mariachi conjures up images of guys who serenade the tables in touristic Mexican restaurants. Its not like that and neither is the music anything like the traditional style of Vicente Fernandez. Think in terms of this music being to mariachi as the nuevo tango of Astor Piazzolla is to the guardia vieja...then crank it up and enjoy!

It just wasn't what I thought it would be and I personally didn't like it. But it is good music.
it's all about the Malagueña.......2004-12-01
i loved the movie and the music there is good. i really like the Malagueña so i learned how to play it on guitar. the song is great i enjoyed the movie as much as i enjoyed the sound track
Start to Finish, a Real Mexi-CAN of a Soundtrack.......2004-11-30
Alright, so the main reason I got the soundtrack was Pistolero by Juno Reactor,a real driving, pumped-up techno song. I started to get into the rest of the music on the soundtrack, and I find it an essential cd I carry along with me. The great thing about this soundtrack is you can listen in on Mexican traditional music and a glimpse of the culture, and still have some real badass-sounding guitar! Whatever you may think of the film, you can imagine the actors playing their parts in your head, since they play and sing in the soundtrack (as the first one). There is an aura in the music I can't put my finger on; there's a history, an old feel to it, but it lingers with new musical ideas. Kinda like the movie, in terms of making it. I agree fullheartedly with previous reviews: where the movie fails, the music fills in the gaps and expands on Mexican music, making the entire movie/soundtrack experience very deep and epic. I dunno, maybe I'm rambling, but I emphasize that this soundtrack adds culture and kickass to your collection, as it did mine.
Better than the movie!.......2004-11-21
When I first saw this film I was shocked at its total stupidity. I was a big fan of the first Desperado and this sequel completely choked my enthusiasm. One thing that was good about this film though was the music. I have to admit it, the music was excellent and in harmony with the motion picture. The best tracks on this CD are Traeme Paz, El Mariachi and Siente Mi Amor (Salma Hayek brings out the best in her sensuality in this song). I'm not a big fan of Latino music but some of these songs are so beautiful they deserve to be listened to. Yo Te Quiero and Cuka Rocka both are well known songs and excellent to dance to, while Flor Del Mal is a very nice and chilling ballad. This CD is a great addition to your music collection, don't hesitate to buy it.

Album Description
Chip Taylor and Carrie Rodriguez are joined by guitar legend Bill Frisell on the new Red Dog Tracks, released May 24 by Back Porch Records. The duo's widely heralded 2003 album, Trouble With Humans, found "stunning fiddler turned twangy chanteuse" Rodriguez and Taylor, a writer of "resonant songs," "making some of the most distinctive acoustic music around today" (all NY Times). A pinnacle of his four-decade-plus career, Trouble With Humans earned across the board critical attention. Red Dog Tracks builds on the success of its predecessor, promising to outstrip the duo's past accomplishments.
Recorded over three days at New York's Avatar Studios, Red Dog Tracks consists largely of first and second takes, capturing the natural chemistry between the two musicians. In addition to fan favorite "Son of Man," the poetic "Big Moon Shinin'," and the gospel-inspired "Oh Set A Light," Red Dog Tracks includes the duo's spirited takes on Clarence Williams' "My Bucket's Got A Hole In It" and Hank Williams' lonesome "I Can't Help It (If I'm Still In Love With You)." Backed by Jim Whitney (bass), Kenney Wollesen (drums) and Frisell's understated accompaniment, the band perfectly compliments Taylor's poignant songwriting, his earthy singing, and Rodriguez's sultry vocals.
A consummate, deft songwriter and a stirring performer, the accomplished Taylor has written a vast catalog of unforgettable songs, including the rock classic "Wild Thing" and soulful country number "Angel of the Morning;" artists as varied as Jeff Beck, Frank Sinatra, and Hank Williams, Jr. have covered the troubadour's tunes. Lucinda Williams told The New York Times, "Chip really knows how to craft a song." Taylor found classically trained fiddle player Rodriguez plying her trade at 2001's South By Southwest Festival. Taylor and initially reluctant songbird Rodriguez have wowed critics, fans, and fellow musicians alike with their exquisite performances. The duo's third album, Red Dog Tracks, finds the partners at the top of their game.

Totally hooked.......2007-03-09
I first heard "Must Be the Whiskey" on a college radio station while driving in my car and was so blown away I nearly ran off the road! Fortunately I was able to catch the album title and bought it immediately. The rest of the CD did not disappoint and I am totally hooked. Every song has something intimate and infectious about it, whether it's the lyrics, the harmonies, the groove, or the heartfelt delivery. Highly recommended even if you're not into country or blugrass.
Cuts to the heart.......2007-02-13
Lots of great tracks, and a few truly unforgettable ones (e.g., Red Dog Tracks, Keep your Hat on Jenny). Taylor is a great songwriter, and Rodriguez's vocals and fiddle playing are superb. This album is full of soul; you won't be dissapointed. Every bit as good as "The Trouble with Humans".
Second Best.......2006-11-04
Not as good as "The Trouble with Humans" CD, but we really do like this duo. They are great together. What good harmony!
A Terrific CD.......2006-08-15
This is fabulous music in every respect. My wife and I just discovered Chip and Carrie and are grateful to the person who introduced us to this CD. This couple deserves a lot more attention and exposure than they seem to be getting

A treasure of the musical world........2007-04-14
I was first introduced to Miss Russell in 1980 by fellow musicians in Rochester NY. We spent late nights after rehearsals secretly listening and laughing ourselves sick. She had the ability to put us and our conductor in our places and made us like it! Miss Russell clearly understood opera, live concert events, touring and all aspects of the music of the world. Parts of this album were recorded in New York City USA and parts in Johannesburg South Africa. It makes no difference where the audience is, the language and experience is universal and we all laugh together. Undressed bagpipes, ears turning into gardenias, the lament for the fat ladies, and "Jolly Old Sigmund Freud" presented in the singular voice of a "ruined opera singer" are irresistible.
The best comment about this album came from my seventeen year old son. Just last year (2006) I finally got a CD copy of this priceless work of art and shared it with him. He listened totally enthralled. The selection "Hamletto, or Prosciuttino (sung in simultaneous Italian and English0" caused him to comment, "Well, now I know what Hamlet is about." He since asked me to get the others and has loved them as well. "Backwards With the Folk Song" brought back memories of Voice Lessons and dreary concerts that now can be enjoyed safely from a distance. Today's indie and emo musicians could do well to listen and learn.
I would recommend Miss Russell's work for any teenaged class, they seem to adore her sly wit. Besides, all the French Horn players in the High School band need a little teasing from time to time.
A classic above all classics.......2000-03-17
From the velvet-voiced music reviewer herself, Anna Russell has laid many a sour note. This in itself, is what makes her so funny. She takes greater pains to sound bad as most other singers do to sound good. And the best thing about this, and all of her recordings in general is that you will never tire of them, no matter how much you play them... From those before her or after her in the musica funnia farma (P.D.Q. Bach, Victor Borge, Florence Foster Jenkins, etc.), it is in this venue of music appreciation (or as some say, depreciation), that will bring newer fans to the classical arena...
Funny and scathingly true.......1999-10-29
Highly recomended listening for the serious classical music enthusiast who enjoys a good laugh!
Hilarious - move over Victor Borge & Beatrice Lily.......1999-03-15
Anyone who loves classical music, Victor Borge, Flanders & Swann , Beatrice Lily, or PDQ Bach will love this album, play it over and over, and quote her to friends.
