Nomadic Southern evangelist Leon Followill may take soap suds to the mouths of the kinfolk wunderkinds--his three sons and a nephew--in Tennessee quartet Kings of Leon, whose second album spins enough cuss phrases and sexual allusions to leave Dolly Parton flushed. But the peculiar 20-something longhairs also fuel up on a filthy shotgun bass and relentless guitar riffs, complementing the delightfully discordant drawl of vocalist Caleb Followill to whittle a 35-minute grab bag of garage rock, English blues, sixties psychedelia, London Calling-ska, spaced-out country waltzes and front-porch, red-state revelry. Without revising its 2003 debut Youth & Young Manhood, producer Ethan Johns (The Jayhawks, Ray LaMontagne) steers the band down a similar mischievous road, integrating poles-apart rhythms and techniques into an energized jumble of rotating tempos and lyrical bombshells. Putting faith in earth-shakers like "Velvet Snow" and "Pistol Of Fire," the wound down and pleasing "Milk" and its yodeling cousin "Day Old Blues," the Kings ultimately escape Preacher Leon's retribution, rendering him speechless--save for a simple "amen." --Scott Holter

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic!.......2007-07-10

This ablum is great all the way around from the tempo, lyrics and instramentals to the tone and depth of each successive track. I definitely reccomend this to anyone who is a fan of The Rolling Stones, White Stripes or The Black Keys.

5 out of 5 stars Heartbroken Smiles.......2007-06-21

This is, in my opinion, the best album put out by the Kings of Leon so far. It's right in the sweet spot between their early, gritty, garage rock days and their current, polished, art rock style. The songs have a strange poetic truth to them, going between stories of growing up, breaking up, incest, and even erectile disfunciton with grace and a unique, catchy sound.

If you're interested in the Kings of Leon, but don't know which album to pick, this is the one. I recommend all of their albums, but this is far and away their most inspired record to date.

5 out of 5 stars KOL's Best.......2007-05-12

This album didn't grab me right away, but I liked it more and more as I listened to it. Now I consider it one of the rare albums that really does deserve 5 stars. For the full 5 I think every song should be good, and several of them should be great and that's the case here. I'm not all that fond of KOL's 1st or 3rd albums, but all the planets aligned for this one and they do their own unique thing just right.

5 out of 5 stars Great Album from the best new rock band.......2007-04-19

I can't believe how many reviewers are trashing this band. Open your ears to GOOD music!

5 out of 5 stars The King ain't dead............2007-04-16

How good is this album????

I heard Youth and Young Manhood at my local coffee shop a few years ago and went out and bought it straight away. I liked it, but this is better...way better. I love listening to a band that perfectly mixes lyrics, music and attitude.

To the reviewers who gave this 1 star because Caleb's voice is crap....get a life....if you place that as one of your criteria go and listen to Mariah Carey....his vocals and the raw guitar sound are one of the best musical matches I have heard in a long time and more power to these guys for keeping it real...

Now the tracks....Slow Night So Long, Taper Jean Girl, Milk, King of the Rodeo are all fantasic songs but pound for pound "The Bucket" is their best song recorded to date. The rattling drum beat in the chorus makes this one of my fav tracks.

Really there are no weak songs, it is just one of those rare albums that hits the mark in so many ways. My only regret is that I missed seeing them when the toured last year especially considering they held an impromptu gig at my local.....Oh well next time around...

Already tagged with the unfortunate critical label of "southern-fried Strokes," the full-length debut by the brothers Followill (Nathan, Jared, Caleb) and cousin (Matthew Followill) may well have its roots in their itinerant evangelist father Leon blasting his sons with relentless doses of `70s rock as they traveled the South from one preaching gig to the next. But the way the Kings channel sources as disparate as Led Zeppelin's "That's the Way" into "Joe's Head" or the Who's "Circles" into their ""Molly's Chambers" seems almost subconscious; after a decade of bands trying to reinvent the rock wheel, it's refreshing to hear one content to gleefully pry it loose and send it spinning in their own peculiar directions. As with all the great ones, deconstructing the Kings' sound doesn't get you far: singer/guitarist Caleb perpetually seems to be rolling one too many syllables off a lazy, Southern tongue while his haystack-haired brothers and cousin chug maniacally along like some lost, recently re-tooled '60s garage-psych-rock legend. In the end there's not an ounce of the Strokes' latent pop culture self-consciousness in the Kings' intoxicating sonic haze--just the restless, often bittersweet noise of one of the most original bands to hail from Dixie since R.E.M. --Jerry McCulley

do i really need to say anything more? One of my fav disks by one of my fav bands.

5 out of 5 stars SIMPLY SUBLIME (not the band, the definition).......2007-01-22

New different sound that picks up some great influences - Strokes meet the Velvet Underground meets the "I don't give a @#$% what you think of my music" creativity of Jeff Buckley.

These guys are an open channel and both albums are must haves. Listen over and over - you'll get it.

If you don't understand this band or Caleb's phrasing - you were probably one of the people who thought Jeff Buckley's Grace album was crap.

This is the band to watch for the next decade. Enjoy.

3 out of 5 stars OK if Your Like it Basic.......2006-12-12

Very basic rock and roll. I get the impression that these guys barely know how to play their instruments, and their singing is not particularly "schooled" either.

If you're looking for some simple rock, with a touch of folk here and there, this might be for you. Sort of Bob Dylan meets The Strokes.

Some of the tunes are quite engaging. But on the whole, it all seems sort of trite.

5 out of 5 stars hallelujah the 3 minute high energy song is back!!.......2006-11-07

i found this cd to be one of my all time favorites! high energy, sexy lyrics, growly vocals. you don't get much better than that in rock and roll. then there's that amazing "dusty", true to form swamp blues, one of my favorites. anyone looking for a true rock and roll sound will not be disappointed by this cd!!

5 out of 5 stars Still Fresh.......2006-06-17

3 years later, and this album still sounds as fresh as the first time I heard it. Garage rock with a southern twist. It took a few listens to really grow on me, but sometimes the best ones do. In todays music, there's not many albums that have a lot of "staying power", but this one does. It might be a familiar sound to some, but at the same time you'll know that you've never heard anything quite like it before. And it was definitely a treat to see them a few times last year, open for U2.
You know you're on your way up, when Bono calls...

5 out of 5 stars Worth the price of admission.......2006-12-23

I admit it - the first time I heard KOL was Molly Chambers on the VW Jetta commercial, and as anti-music-for-advertising as I am, there was no way of denying that this was real rock n' roll. So I bought the song, listened to it about a hundred times and realized that my initial assessment was correct.

Then I bought the Holy Roller CD and was even further convinced, if that were possible. Another reviewer stated that these guys sound like they invented rock n' roll, and that's so true - and it needs to be invented every once in while. When contemporary music gets to the point where image and hype supplant talent and energy, fortunately there's always someone or some band to shake things up and make it new again.

The Stones did it (may they rest in peace), Alice Cooper did it, the Ramones did it, Nirvana did it, and KOL does it.

This is a great album.

5 out of 5 stars Rock'n'Roll That Isn't Product.......2006-06-04

If you've never heard Kings of Leon, this is as good a place to start as any. I can't say what exactly it is that attracts me to this music, except to note that I seem to have become a very withered old soul when it comes to popular music, and the song "Holy Roller Novocaine" is the first since "Smells Like Teen Spirit" (which was a very long time ago, in the scheme of things) to get my pulse going.

OK, I lied: I do know what attracts me to this music, it's just embarrassing to admit: They sound like they just invented rock'n'roll, which is no small achievement in the 21st Century. They play like they really mean it, and they also play like they don't give a damn, which is what the really good stuff sounds like. I envy them their purity of spirit, and I also fear for their souls, because the Great Hype is well underway, because no matter what they think they're doing, their record company sees them as generators of Product, and Product is what they'll be soon enough unless they are very smart and very tough. I wish them all the luck in the world, and if they never do anything else, they at least laid down these tracks, which give an old rocker hope that it is still possible at this late date to make rock'n'roll that isn't Product.

4 out of 5 stars they DO NOT sound like the strokes.......2006-01-18

this band sounds nothing like the strokes. they may have opened for the strokes but they don't sound like them. they sound completely different. KOL sound like good rock 'n' roll. i am a big fan of both bands though. i bought this ep for the track "wicker chair" and "different" version of "california waiting"(which is my favorite KOL song). number one the version of "California waiting" is not that different then the version on their debut full length "youth & youngmanhood" but the track "wicker chair" makes this worth the $2.72 it cost me to get this. if you have a couple extra bucks and wanna hear an early KOL song you might not have, this is a good purchase.

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic Start.......2005-06-02

This is KOL's first release. It includes a different version of California Waiting from what was later released on their 1st album. It also includes Wicker Chair, which as been released on a number of CD Singles (and a Japanese album) but remains unreleased on any other album.

Because you either adore or detest the Kings of Leon, and because the band has not only made it but is obviously going to be a major voice in rock, I see no point in the host of reviews that are either cheerleading or dissing them. I've not seen a band generate so much love/hate since the Stones broke in way back in 1964 (and I'm old enough to remember that very clearly).

Personally, I'm convinced KOL will be one of the greatest bands ever (and I can count the number of bands I've said that about over the last 40 years on one hand)....and yes, I've seen them live more than once.

For those of you who don't want to miss a moment of the bliss as it arrives, here is a comprehensive list of what KOL has released. Here is a key to the notations so you won't miss any of their releases:

5 out of 5 stars Everything I've Wanted...and more.......2005-04-17

I was recommended this album back in May of 2003 by a cd store owner who asked me what I liked to listen to. He hit the nail on the head for sure. The Kings of Leon are a band that FINALLY manages to reinstate some hope in me for the future of rock and roll.

Don't listen to people when they say these guys are "steeped in southern rock" - these kids grew up not being permitted to listen to any kind of rock music. They didn't even know who Lynard Skynard WAS until people started telling them "uh...you kinda sound like them." Their music, interestingly enough, IS somewhat reminiscent of roadtripping through Tennessee, pounding back Coors Original and making out with strangers in sleazy off-highway motels. But it's more than that.

Their songs are melodic, thoughtful, heart-felt and honest, and for a band that has little experience being an actual band and even less at making out with strange dirty-girls, these guys manage to create music that surpasses many groups that have been trying for years. "The Southern Strokes"? Nah, not even close. A band like the Strokes has too much hipster attitude that it overshadows any attempt at writing good music they make. The Kings of Leon...they probably only recently learned what the word "hipster" even means.

5 out of 5 stars The Best Band that you've never heard of!.......2007-01-09

This group is SO good! Their music has a variety of the usual influences: rock, country, and folk. Their songwriting is excellent; they have great harmonies, intelligent lyrics, good voices (all take turns with lead and harmony vocals,) and all three members make excellent contributions to the group. Basically, in their native Canada, this is a supergroup! All three of these guys have great solo careers, but still make time to record with the band, too.

I know that since this CD is an import, you can't listen to clips of this on Amazon. However, you should be able to listen to clips of their CDs "Bark" and "Kings of Love" here. ("BARK" is an excellent introduction and "Kings of Love" is another great one,) but you may just have to take my word on them.

If you like John Hiatt, Neil Young, and Willie Nelson then you will FALL IN LOVE with this album!!!!

5 out of 5 stars I was frolicking, now I'm rollicking!.......2007-07-03

Were your socks blown off by their album "Let's Frolic?" Just wait 'til you hear this one!

At the end of the song "Ole Slewfoot" you clearly hear someone in the recording studio say, "You wanna play this again just 'cause it's fun to play?" This simple question summarizes the whole CD. It's full of studio sessions, outtakes, and material that wasn't used on their previous album -- I wish that other artists' albums were as consistently good as this CD of "throwaway material."

If you're already a fan of BARK, you will instantly play this over and over again because it's that catchy and good! My favorite songs here are "Down by the Henry Moore," "Ole Slewfoot," and "Don't Blame Your Blues on Me." (If you're curious about the group in general, check out my review for "Let's Frolic.")

Stephen Fearing, Colin Linden and Tom Wilson formed the band as a tribute to the much respected but little known Willie P. Bennett in late 1995. In 1996 their debut album High or Hurtin' was released to critical acclaim in Canada. All three continued their successful solo careers garnering numerous individual awards and nominations. The chemistry which first brought the trio together drew them back in 1999, resulting in the Juno Award-winning double album Kings of Love. The album's unique fusion of rock, roots, folk, blues and country influences established the band as favorites of both music fans and critics alike. Their newest effort finds the trio maturing musically, featuring some of the best material that these three talented songwriters have ever put to disc. Recorded in the winter of 2003, BARK captures the raw energy of the band, from the honky tonk twang of "Swinging from the Chains of Love," to the world weariness of "Stoned," to the unabashed and infectious rock 'n' roll of "Had Enough of You Today." BARK features 12 original songs, as well as covers of Willie P. Bennett's "Willie's Diamond Joe" and Bruce Cockburn's "Tie Me at the Crossroads." Featured musicians include Richard Bell (the Band), Gary Craig (Anne Murray, Jann Arden) and John Dymond (Bruce Cockburn, Natalie MacMaster). BARK mixes the many strengths of these talented artists to forge a uniquely entertaining and powerful record.

5 out of 5 stars The best band that you have never heard!!.......2004-06-05

Blackie & The Rodeo Kings may very well be the most under rated
band in the world. They certainly are the most under rated band in the Americana genre. Even though all three members are stars in their own right in their native Canada, there is most definitely no clash of egos from this group of Canucks. To the contrary, there is an undeniable chemistry and kinship among them that, in my opinion, makes them one of the mot talented trios of all time (I can attest to that having the opportunity

to recently meet them, and see them in concert, great guys).
In addition, their group of backing musicians including, Gary Craig, & Richard Bell, are superb. Their most recent effort,
Bark is a tasty mix of rockabilly, blues, country, & roots rock.
Their previous effort, Kings of Love, is more of the same. If you are fan of The Band, John Hiatt, Whiskeytown (before Ryan's ego exploded), etc., be sure to check these guys out.

4 out of 5 stars Cool roots-rock, country and blues from Canada.......2004-04-23

Well, here's a puzzle: if it's Canadian, is it still Americana? Far North Americana, maybe? Sub-Arcticana? Anyway, this disc opens with "Swinging From The Chains Of Love," a tasty, upbeat country-billy tune, then it zips into more chunky-sounding roots-rockish territory, with a bouncy, agile slide guitar at the heart of the mix, bringing to mind old stuff by David Lindley and Ry Cooder. Mostly this is pretty darn catchy, although they do slip into some sluggish tropes, as with the forced profundity of "Heaven Knows Your Name," "Willie's Diamond Joe," and a couple of other tunes. If you like these guys, also try checking out solo albums by singer-guitarist Colin Linden.

5 out of 5 stars Album of the year 2003.......2004-01-03

Blackie and the Rodeo Kings was CKUA's number one album of the year for 2003 and it was my number one album too. This roots rock endeavor for Steven Fearing, Colin Linden and Tom Wilson has a great full sound for a mere three piece band. But if you are lucky enough to hear them do the same songs unplugged, the music stands up beautifully without all the effects and thunder.

The lyrics are wicked and insightful. "I got a feeling stinging like a new tatoo black across my mind" -- (from Water Or Gasoline by Blackie and the Rodeo Kings). Moods range from rockabilly to ballads to psychadelic rock. BARK is gonna jump up and bite you.

If you only buy one album in the next while, this is the one to get.

      3 out of 5 stars Nice Compilation-Mini Box Set.......2005-09-14

This is a fairly decent mini-box set of some swing artists, but it is by no means a large collection or an indepth overview of the Swing Era. It is, however, a nice little collection of some of the main showman groups of the Swing Era. The crackle sounds from the original vinyls are a nice touch and the quality of the mastering is pretty good. There's some really nice highlights like Ellington's "Caravan" and Shaw's "Stardust". It's a great intro set to anyone who is just getting interested in Swing.

5 out of 5 stars Best re-recordings of original 78's I have ever run across!.......1999-11-18

We hear many re-recordings of swing era music which are taken from film sound tracks or radio outtakes, which are similar to the original 78RPM recordings. These tracks, however, had to come from original material. Every note is the same as I grew up with in the 30s and 40s, even the sour notes, which you will hear if you really listen.

My hat's off to whomever recorded these tracks. All of the 78's hiss and scratch is gone, the screech of the brass is almost nonexistant and the bass has been brought up beautifully. You have to have listened to the original 78's to appreciate the job that has been done.

If you like swing era big band jazz, you will not find a better place to spend $25.

5 out of 5 stars I recommend this box set to anyone who craves to be a hepcat.......1999-08-14

This is the most remarkable box set I have seen! It offers everything from the wailin' horn of Bunny Berigan, the sentimental serenade emitted from Tommy Dorsey's Orchestra and the popular hits like Sing, Sing, Sing. All of the numbers are original recordings, and you can even hear the subtle crackle of the old players. If you want to be a modern swing enthusiast, you should familiarize yourself with the grand daddies to appreciate the Cherry Poppin' Daddy. Personally, I don't think that you will find better music anywhere else from the originals. The music seems to speak for the times. Times of modern cities, and even leaving for war.
