The first Hightone album from Big Sandy and his Fly-Rite Boys was called Jumpin' from Six to Six, and Swingin' West is the followup. The apostrophized verbs in the titles reveal the secret of this Anaheim quintet's appeal; both albums jump and swing with a rhythmic sophistication few neo-rockabilly bands can match. The Fly-Rite Boys syncopate the beat with a no-fuss crispness which owes more to Louis Jordan than to Carl Perkins. Riding that dotted-note feel like a surfer is the bouncy tenor of Robert "Big Sandy" Williams. Williams has reinforced the Louis Jordan connection by writing 11 songs as witty, breezy, and infectious as those that inspired the musical Five Guys Named Moe. --Geoffrey Himes

Album Description
Holiday blues comin' on? Well, put a spike in `em! Here's the zaniest, wildest and just plain sickest Collectors' Choice Music exclusive yet79 tracks from Spike Jones and his City Slickers! These represent Spike's complete Standard Transcription sides, but these tunes are anything but standard; Mr. Jones brought his full bag of tricks for these non-commercial recordings (made in Hollywood during the early `40s). Add to that the fact that most of these have never been on CD or even LP, and any lover of Spike's mayhem-filled mixture of laughs and hot licks is going to flip over this set! Notes and great pictures accompany this 3-CD walk on the wacky side from the greatest novelty band of all time.
Customer Reviews:
Great set of wartime rarities.......2003-05-14
Spike Jones was the king of the novelty song performers, with hits like "Der Fuehrer's Face" and the parody version of "Sheik of Araby" becoming huge hits during World War II. This is a swell 3-CD set, gathering a full eighty-one of Jones' best tracks from his 1940s heyday, drawn from an extensive archive of radio broadcasts made for the Standard Transcription service. The tightness of his City Slickers band is amply demonstrated in these manic, kookily orchestrated performances. Toots, squonks, blatts and bleats whiz by at lightning speed, as one daffy song after another will delight devoted fans. Amazingly, Jones had the unusual, almost unique ability to perform a repertoire almost entirely made up of comedic material, and yet still be quite listenable and engaging. His jazz chops were hardly in question, and from time to time Jones would dash off a non-novelty ballad or two, just to give the rubes something to think about. Of course, just as often he would perform a song that *sounded* like a straight ballad, but would turn out to be another goof. (One great example of this is the sultry "Serenade To A Jerk," sung in slinky, burlesque tones by Myrtle Horwin.) This collection may seem a little overwhelming, but like his studio recordings, these radio performances have a certain brilliance and joie de vivre about them that will leave you enchanted. Definitely worth checking out!

Standard Transcription Collection.......2003-04-12
This collection has remastered material from the large stack of Standard Transcription discs from the early 1940's. There are many songs not recorded on RCA, many on the theme of wartime ("48 Reasons Why"), and the quality is excellent. The packaging is threadbare but this is an essential CD package for true music lovers.

Unless you've laid down the big bucks for Bear Family's motherlode, Razor & Tie's first volume of Speedy & Jimmy instrumentals probably left you hungry for more. Thankfully--mercifully--Razor & Tie has issued a jaw-dropping second collection of fiery, ferocious forays. Bryant's head-spinning single-string leads mesh perfectly with West's limitless arsenal of pedal-steel tones, moans, whines, and wails. Remarkably, almost all of their 50 recordings are tossed-off head arrangements done for sheer enjoyment, but they remain superlative country-bop tracks that turn flash and flamboyance into valuable assets. Go no further than "China Boy," a six-minute reading of the jazz standard that runs right through producer Ken Nelson's stop signs, or the ballad "West of Samoa," which features West's bird imitations on pedal steel. Whether on floating Hawaiian-tinged ballads or supersonic steamers, the dynamic duo never ceases to amaze. --Marc Greilsamer
Customer Reviews:
This should have been on Voyager's golden record.......2006-06-10
Without hyperbole, "Swingin' On The Strings" contains some of the greatest music ever recorded. Apart, they were just two studio musicians. Together, they created interstellar magic. Jimmy and Speedy - electric guitar and steel guitar - these guys shared the same musical consciousness on a cosmic level. Always cerebral, the compositions are stirring and the improvisation is spellbinding. This is perfect music. This has it all regardless of where you're coming from as a listener: country, jamband, jazz, instrumental enthusiast, etc. This disc should especially appeal to those coming from the Junior Brown camp. This is on an equal footing with its predecessor "Stratosphere Boogie" given the mind melting races, medium-tempo waltzes and relaxed ballads. "Swingin' On The Strings" should have been on Voyager's golden record, it is an otherwordly treasure.
country music instrumental at its' best.......2005-08-22
the true creative genius of this collaboration is first really being appreciated now, these two guys could play their hearts out and there is no way you won't enjoy hearing this CD. I don't know who's truly faster, Jimmy Byant or Joe Maphis, but who cares, and the pedal steel guitar by Speedy West is incredible!
Country-jazz from outer space. Smokin!!!!.......1999-10-06
This CD epitomizes creativity and chemistry between two fine musicians. I didn't live in 1951, but I have been collecting Western Swing, Old Country, Rockabilly, and Bluegrass records all my life. This CD is far and beyond the best example of what the human mind and spirit can do using music as a medium. You don't have to like swing, or country to like this CD. It doesn't matter if you like music at all, this CD forces you pay attention, tap your foot, bust a step, or just kick back and listen with awe. Jimmy and Speedy knew how to create. Creativity seems like a hard find in today's wasteland of fluff. Creativity is the backbone of this CD. The first song hits the ground running out of the gate, and when the last song is up, you'll start it all over again. Again, again, and again. There's not a dud on this disc!! Jamming with Jimmy portrays the lost art of hot fiddle playing. Lover will run you over, Railroading will have you dancing, and Pushing the Blues will have you fetching your black light out of the attic. Oh yeah, the rest are perfect too. These songs are perfect. PERFECT. Killer bassfiddle playing, jazzy piano fills, and yes: that smokin' guitar of Jimmy fused with that "whacked out" steel of Speedy. Too much fun! This is the CD that has made me believe that maybe good music has a chance to surface in our world today. One listen and you'll be smiling. There is no way around it. From a musician (like myself), all I can say is "woodshed here I come, I've truly been inspired!!!!"
Incredible country-jazz-bop-boogie!.......1999-05-15
Although this is volume 2 to Razor & Tie's first collection of Speedy West and Jimmy Bryant, this CD is every bit as good (if not better)! I'm not generally a big fan of country music, but these guys absolutely floored me. Especially noteworthy is their rendition of "Lover" which even without the benefits of overdubbing studio trickery completely rips Les Paul's version to shreds.

Wild and Crazy!.......2001-07-04
These guys are Wild, we need more of good times like this in todays music! Good old fashion fun and nobody gets hurt, well, maybe Hitler. Just a good time CD, enjoyed it a lot!
A Spike Jones chronology of his earliest records.......1999-01-19
This British import is actually a chronology of Spike's earliest 78s for Bluebird / RCA, from his first recording session in 1941 ("Red Wing") through 1945. Included are his hits ("Cocktails for Two," "Der Fuehrer's Face") and obscure B-sides ("The Covered Wagon Rolled Right Along," "Leave the Dishes In the Sink"). Spike's band was in its prime during this time, making for a good collection. Editing is good, especially joining the six parts of "The Nutcracker Suite." But note that the source material is scratchy 78s!

Customer Reviews:
Retro-rific Western swing/trad country .......2005-04-18
Big Sandy and His Fly-Rite Boys specialize in retro country, much like the Derailers or BR5-49. But unlike the Derailers' Bakersfield sound or BR5-49's rockabilly leanings, Big Sandy usually keeps it fairly straight down the traditional country middle with some occasional dabblings in Western swing. To keep it all sounding authentic, roots music maven Dave Alvin runs the knobs as producer.
HIGHLIGHTS:
Honky tonker "My Sinful Days are Over" is easily one of the best here as Big Sandy runs down a litany of his sins he intends to do away with...one day. "Too Late to be True" is a kiss-off to an unfaithful lover, as is "Parts Unknown". "We Tried to Tell You" has the Fly-Rite Boys commisserating with Big Sandy post-breakup. ("She has the sweetest love around/Why just ask any guy in town..We tried to tell you")
LOW SPOTS:
"Murphy's Law" is a somewhat nondescript instrumental. "You Say You Don't (But You Do)" just seems a bit tossed off..a very middling composition.
BOTTOM LINE:
Sandy and company sound like a long lost classic country act that somehow filtered back into today's history via time machine. Alt country fans will find much to love here, as will fans of Bob Wills, Ernest Tubb, and Hank (Sr. that is) that aren't doctrinaire that it has to be "old" to be good.
3 1/2 stars
This very well could be called "A Tribute to Louis Jordan".......2004-02-20
Even though Robert Willimas(Big Sandy) wrote these gems, they sound right out of the Louis Jordan songbook, and the band plays more along the lines of jump blues and R&B 1940s' combo, with a hint of western swing. Sandy's vocals are ever so smoooooth!!! This wil lappeal to fans of jazz, swing, R&B, Jump blues, Western Swing and rockabilly! A great cd, one of sandy's very best! Highlight include Let Me In There Baby, and Parts Unknown. Great hillbilly jazz at it's very best right here fro mSouthern CAl. I have seen Big Sandy at least 2 dozen times in clubs in LA, and this cd represents what you would hear at one of his shows.
I dig Big..........2003-12-02
Big sandy sounds great here his voice, his band(this is great retro western swing). A great cd for cocktail parties, drinking martinis and smoking cigars, and for swing dancing(jitterbug and east coast swing). a great cd... read more about me and see my other reviews please..., but 1st buy this cd...
personally my favorite.......2000-06-29
The songs on this album are great. It's really upbeat country. I like this album a lot better than "jumpin from 6 to 6," and i thought that album was great. Big Sandy has great clever/witty lyrics and keeps rockabilly fun on this album. Good from start to finish, kinda leaves you wanting more. great for fans of hank williams, older country, and fans of new and old rockabilly.

Great boppers, jivers and strollers.......2004-07-08
This is a great dance album with plenty boppers, jivers and strollers. If you like to jive get this cd and any other 50's McNeely or Joe Houston. A great uptempo cd full of great songs and honking saxaphone. Pre pleasurable r&b.
Who needs Joel Whitburn books to determine what is good?.......2003-02-15
Great CD and you don't need bury your face in some stupid Joel Whitburn book to figure that out.
Just use your ears.
Covers that transitional period so the songs range from jump to jazz, but then again genre labels are about as irrelevant as the trade charts.

Hear "Brush Up Your Shakespeare" in it's entirety, enjoy Hamlet retold in a jazzy piece that even features a little scat singing, and revel in the creative arrangement of "Tonight" (it features a bit of dialogue, some musical borrowings from Prokofiev, and more to create a multi-dimensional experience of this piece.) I highly recommend this diverse, interesting, stimulating and intriguing CD. I really liked it, in case you haven't guessed.
PS: The singing is good, too.
Excellent variety of choices!.......1998-09-10
This CD gives you an educational background on just how many different musical adaptations of Shakespearean works have been produced! The songs range from familiar tunes of Cole Porter like "Too Darn Hot" to obscure performances in Yale's swimming pool for "Fear No More." The notes by Bert Fink are hilarious and move along with the songs smoothly.

This is a CD for people who wish that Western Swing could be minimized and cutsified, and reduced to sufficiently suburban whiteness.
Western swing musicians were deep into what Louis Armstrong even filtered through the minstrel Emmett Miller taught. Listen to the Dinah here. If you are into Louis, you realize the one great performance by Louis we have filmed is his Dinah in the early 1930s before he broke his lip in Denmark. Tommy Duncan, the great singer of Western Swing, struggled to get as close to that Dinah as possible. Louis never let anythign go you see every possible note coming in his singing let alone his trumpet playing which only came when my man was announced "I'm ready" meaning that he was high enough on the marijuana he insisted on to perform.
Tommy Duncan in his Tiffany performance strains and does this. The girl scout who is the vocalist here, does everything cutsie, except a few slow lounge torch tunes which are delivered at a level any supper club songstress could sing.
Western swing swung and burned precisely because it went for the dope infused wildness and uncontained frenzy and swing of Black jazz mixed with the country madness induced by much loco weed in the West.
It wasn't polite jazz for yuppies. That is what cowbop is.
Having said that the guitarist, the saxophone player, and the bassist are worth hearing to get ideas of what this record could sound like if this was a Western swing record. Even the most conservative western swing band leaders saw the center of their music having the soloists go mad, go wild, try something that was uncontained.
This record is contained.
If you want to see young white serious musicians creating great Western swing music on a par or superior to the originals, please buy the first four or five albums by the Hot Club of Cowtown.
Now this CD isn't bad if you pick it up on a fund raising table for a cause you support and it costs you only five bucks or less as it did me.
Otherwise, buy the real thing. Check my see about me banner abover to see my listmania list called "Western swing what is is and What it isn't" Despite the good musicians on this record, this isn't.

great takes on classic tunes.......2005-11-05
from website:
Drawing from Larry Coryell's 1980s recordings, JOY SPRING features the jazz-rock guitar pioneer in an unusually straight-ahead mode. Here Coryell takes on classic tunes by Duke Ellington, Thelonious Monk, Dave Brubeck, John Coltrane, and others, showcasing his interpretive skills and reining in his edgier tendencies in favor of a gentle, Wes Montgomery-like sound. While the results aren't as adventurous as Coryell's earlier outings, JOY SPRING does highlight the dexterous, melodic side of this multi-faceted guitar hero.
