Album Description

The industry dismissed it as "hillbilly" music, but the young rockabillies fed off the energy of jumpin' cuts from the country side of the musical equator. Here are 120 country-flavored cuts from the dawn of rock 'n' roll!

5 out of 5 stars Boppin' Rockin' Hoppin'.......2007-02-07

This is a great box set. Like so many of the Proper sets offers lots of informative info into the music and the artisit. If you like Boogie Woogie Swingin' Hoppin' Country that provided alot of rock-a-billy sounds you'll love this set. If you're looking for hard core 60's rock-a-billy it's not here. A great set, well worth the money. Glad I bought it!

This is a superb collection of spectacular and sometimes downright bizarre rockabilly! A great place to begin for one not very familiar with this genre.

4 out of 5 stars More Hillbilly Than Rockabilly.......2006-09-25

"From Boppin Hillbilly to Red Hot Rockabilly" offers up four CDs jam-packed with bopping hillbilly music but, unfortunately, very little in the way of rockabilly.
If you're a fan of the boppin' hillbilly genre this is a great find but fans looking for early rockabilly will be disappointed.
The sound quality is first rate and there is a nice liner notes booklet.
As with all sets by Proper, this set offers a tremendous value for the money.

5 out of 5 stars Phenomenal CD! Great Rockabilly!!.......2006-04-16

I picked up this CD recently together with Rockabilly Rumble Deuce. Golly Gee Records and Raucous Records have put together a winner here. Fantastic modern rockabilly music that has high quality production but with a vintage feel. 24 tracks and an hour's worth of great rockabilly music - this is a deal! There wasn't one bad cut on the record. Purchase with confidence and get ready to bop and jive!

2 out of 5 stars I really wanted to like this cd but................2005-10-15

I eagerly awaited the arrival of this cd wanting to hear some new rockabilly bands I was not familiar with, but I was severly dissapointed. The quality of the tracks on this cd are mediocre at best and some are just downright bad, the two standout tracks are red hot and real gone by the spinouts(great tune, good hook, excellent slap bass, guitar interplay)The other standout is girl of my dreams,by peter and the wolves very Elvis, Maries the Name era early sixties sounding. The majority of the other tunes are just dowright pitiful. If you are new to the rockabilly scene, a few helpful suggestions, The Stray Cats, The Blasters, Robert Gordon, The Planet Rockers, Sun era and 56-59 Elvis, Carl Perkins, Gene Vincent, Eddie Cochran, the list goes on and on of better spent dollars on QUALITY rockabilly music, apologies to these artists, but if this is the current state of rockabilly, please somebody help us!!!!!!

5 out of 5 stars Really Happy About Buying This CD.......2005-08-22

If you are a Rockabilly fan and just want to have a few CD's in your collection, then this is definitely a great place to start. I love rockabilly, but aside from one Stray Cats CD I didn't own a rockabilly CD until I found this one. It has a little bit of everything and it never gets tiresome. An awsome CD.

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic Rockabilly.......2004-01-10

My comments mirror exactly what Jack Barry said in his review. I I have always loved rockabilly music, but I have found that most of the modern bands do not quite get it right. They seem to over-do it a bit, and get too wild. But this is not the case with Rockabilly Rumble CD. This is the best compilation album of modern rockabilly music that I have ever heard.

It is a sampler of the various artists on the Golly Gee and Raucous Labels. Every track is great - some are terrific. My favorite bands are the Slingshots, Spinouts, Ralph Rebel, Peter & The Wolves, Riverside Trio, Rebel Rockers, and Jive Romeros.

The liner notes identify the particular album each track was taken from. I then went back onto the Amazon website to see if my favorite items were available. I ended up placing an order today for 5 additional CDs (2 of them are by Ralph Rebel). So this can serve as a warning that this experience can get expensive. However it is well worth the price for this terrific rockabilly music. I am now looking forward to receiving the individual CDs by these great artists.

4 out of 5 stars Hot Pickers in Japan.......2001-05-12

The album was recorded in Tokyo and originally issued on Nippon Columbia. Rowan takes the risk to touch on an extremely sensitive issue with his compelling 'Hiroshima Mon Amour', the only original. The rest of the album is traditional bluegrass, but atypical in that Rowan is the only singer. But his singing is so good you don't miss the harmonies, and the other pickers, an all-star lineup (Statman, Trischka, Douglas, Mason) make up for their aphony by fully honoring the promise of the album's title. Just listen to what they do with (to?) Oh Susannah.

    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars King of the Single Entendre.......2004-12-28

Bo Carter is always noted for his barely veiled celebration of carnal pleasures and clever lyrics. While that is well deserved recognition, and its hard to think of anyone who has ever celebrated sex as joyfully as Bo Carter, he's still one of the most undeservedly obscure artists to ever come out of Mississippi.

Carter's guitar work and vocals put him in a league with other Delta Blues icons like Son house and Robert Johnson. That sounds like high praise, and it is. From his work with his family hokum string band (Mississippi Sheiks)through his solo work, Carter is a shining example of the Delta style, and its a shame his novelty work gets so much more attention than his musical talent.

4 out of 5 stars How Many Ways Can You Say It?.......2000-08-22

It sounds juvenile. Bo Carter here writes 14 metaphors for sex using potato diggers, pencils, and pincushions to stand for parts of the anatomy. But what starts off as funny mellows with age into something comforting and sly. You're in on the joke. And in his world, men and women enjoy themselves A LOT. I mean, when was the last time you heard that? In so much of today's music, sex either screws you up or makes you a status symbol. Here, the music (a lone guitar and temperate, folksy, semi-blues picking) and lyrics suggest we are taking it way too seriously. He makes Hokum Blue's finest statement.

5 out of 5 stars For fans of good music, period........2006-12-30

I admit, I was a tad skeptical going into the purchase of this album. I've been a Hot Rize fan for some time now, but have generally kept away from Red Knuckles based on the thought of it tainting the image in my brain of the tight, flawless grass band that is Hot Rize. What I found upon first listen, and something that strengthens with each listen, is that not only do Red Knuckles play western swing, or rockabilly, or whatever you want to call it, but they do it as good or better than any band my ears have ever heard. Case in point, just sample "Wabash Cannonball." What you'll find are tight rhythms, thumping bass lines and a voice that seems so incredibly fit for the style of music, you'll wonder what it's been doing servicing itself to bluegrass. Is Red Knuckles better than Hot Rize? I think it's apples and oranges, but what I can say is that both bands deserve a listen, if for anything, to witness a phenomenal band at its best.

Big fan of Hot Rize and Tim O'Brien. Red Knuckles and the Trailblzers give us a different and thoroughly entertaining and convincing alternative side to the Hot Rize boys. Rockabilly may, in fact, be their true calling.

5 out of 5 stars Campy, yet great.......2006-02-23

If you are a fan of the history of music, like me -- you do not want to be without this album. The covers of some standards bring new life to the music. It is clear by the nature and by the history of this group that they are campy, yet the more you listen to it the more it appears as an actual art. An example of the leangth to which they go to infuse the music with the maximum ammount of fun is that they make up a totally fake band for the old country and western sound. I have seen them live and know that they take turns leaving stage and becoming the alter-ego. Hot Rize/ Trailblazers is a lovely experiance and should be a part of every collection.

    5 out of 5 stars "Classic Country!".......1998-09-16

Makes you want to get up and have a good time. Voices and instruments blend effortlessly. Highly recommend.

5 out of 5 stars one of the best Hot Rize CDs out there!.......1998-07-27

this is one of the best red nuckles and hot rize cds out there. It gives the listener a mix of the traditional bluegrass and the more honky tonkish music. Tim O'Brian and Red realy can sing.

    Album Description

This retrospective of these pub-rock favourites contains 19 tracks of previously unreleased material. It is topped off with a 12 page booklet illustrated in full colour containing a history of the band, some rare photos and some fine examples of the highly regarded artwork by the late Barney Bubbles. (All this for just the price of a few pints and a packet of fags!) Managed by Jake Riviera, they reached their peak as part of the infamous "Naughty Rhythms Tour" of 1975 along with those other stalwarts of the same scene, Dr Feelgood and Kokomo.

Little that's come out of the rock underground since the alternative revolution has been of a distinctly sensual nature. Indie rockers dance around romantic entanglement, but seldom cut in. That's the case with this "Red Hot" compilation, which doesn't mean much of it doesn't have it's own pitiable appeal. A case in point is the album's opener, Freedom Cruise's "Sensational Gravity Boy," a characteristically tuneful and verbose Guided by Voices number that finds the new rock darlings working in tandem with the Breeders' Kim and Kelley Deal. Shayne Carter, ex of Straitjacket Fits, teams up with New Zealand countrymen the Verlaines on "Some Fantasy." Lois Maffeo and Rebecca Gates team on "Sotto Voice," one song that is baldly sexual, though no one's going to get it mixed up with "Let's Get it On." Two interesting one-man bands, Stephen Merritt (here billed as Future Bible Heroes) and F.M. Cornog (East River Pipe) come up with album highlights-a catchy updating of techno pop and a understated elegy for Kurt Cobain, respectively. --Steven Stolder

    5 out of 5 stars Who knew?.......2003-01-18

This is one of of those CD's that I got out of the bargain bin - which I frequently do just to look for something new and caught the Jay Farrar/Kelly Willis duet on the back of the jacket. That alone was worth the 4 bucks in my book. Anyway - wasn't expecting too much and have been pleasantly blown away by what I found. Would highly encourage anyone who's even thinking of buying it to do so - you won't be disappointed. Highlights for me were tracks - 2, 6, 9, 10, 11, 12, 15, & 17 though not necessarily in that order. Much depends on my mood. Oh yeah - have never heard guitars like the ones on the Verlaines track - just and outstanding raucous celebration. Like standing on a pile of dead rock stars....

    5 out of 5 stars My favorite.......2006-10-30

Since Jeff (the reviewer below) is the individual who turned me on to this album in the mid 70's, I would have to agree with him 100%. This album not being available on CD was the driving force that got me to learn how to rip vinyl to WAV.
It doesn't get any better than this.

    5 out of 5 stars A Lost Gem.......2005-12-01

Almost everyone I know who still has the vinyl version of this claims to be just about to wear through it, and for good reason.

This is THE seminal live alt country/bluegrass/country rock album. Usually the allmusic.com website gives very good record reviews, but on this one their 2 stars is completely unwarranted and the comments are vacuous.

Just listen to the music. Watch your toes. If they aren't tapping by the second band on the album, either your leg or your brain has gone to sleep.

This is my very top pick on the "Why isn't this available now on CD?" list.

I agree with the other reviewers on not worrying about whether Gram Parsons is on this album. If you need a GP fix, then go listen to Grievous Angel, a wonderful album. But don't let it stop you from listening to this gem.

BTW, there is a very nice family tree of all the incarnations through 1972 that TFBB went through, giving plenty of credit to Gram. However, the group did just fine without him as this outstanding release shows.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best live albums ever........2005-10-24

I know almost nothing about the technical ability of the players on this album, although I have heard of most of them, and I'm not that big a fan of the Burritos, although I count the Byrds as the best band of the Sixties and Sweetheart of the Rodeo and Gram Parsons's Grievous Angel as two of the best five studio albums ever made. However Last of the Red Hot Burritos is the most exciting and breath-taking live album in my collection.

Other reviewers have referred to the way the Burritos have taken songs associated with other genres and made them their own. How true. I imagine this means that everyone will have their own favourites. I like them all and never having had much taste for the band's previous studio albums I didn't have a preconceived idea of what the songs should sound like when I first heard this. I imagine if I now heard the studio versions I would think they were flabby and bloodless.

I have looked for ages on Amazon here in England for this album but never found it. Suddenly in the last few weeks it has turned up as being sold "used" for £80! I tell you, I was tempted. (And I have a rule never to buy a CD costing more than £10. I rarely break the rule and then only by a couple of pounds.) On a whim I looked on American Amazon and there it is. Much cheaper as well. But still "used".

I well recall the late John Peel, the best-loved DJ in England who died almost a year ago, playing practically every track of the album on his late-night show. I think he was so impressed that he ditched his playlist to accommodate the songs. He was particularly impressed by Hot Burrito #2, which is my own favourite.

So why is it still unavailable? I don't know when it first came out on CD but it may have been at a time when I was staying faithful to vinyl and had not yet invested in a CD player. How I wish I had been more in tune with modern times. From the comments of your other reviewers it looks as if I am not alone. Who cares if Gram Parsons is not on it? Who cares if Rick Roberts is on it? Who cares if it's only a bunch of Chris Hillman's friends playing some favourite songs? I don't and neither should you.

Tell me who I can write to to get this album re-released on CD.

    5 out of 5 stars Poco Loco.......2003-04-21

A little crazy in Tuscon 72...."A'int that a lot of love" permiated the air way..all of 1 underground station in town at that time...and what a time!! this Album is one of the best "live" albums ever recorded.....its like the man said " if you were'nt there you really do not know what its' all about." But this album takes you back there in every energetic cut ..why they do'nt release" Last of the Flyin Red Hot Burritos" is a great mystery....

    5 out of 5 stars The BEST Gershwin/Porter album.......2004-02-11

Perhaps I'm romanticizing, but this was THE cd I listened to in high school. The arrangements are absolutely captivating; building new material over the original themes while referencing them so purely. I couldn't imagine a better use of your money than purchasing this album, it will bring you years of joy!

4 out of 5 stars Glowing Coles of Porter..........2004-01-15

I can only comment on the Porter half of this recording, as I own it on original vinyl. It's a mono copy, but you wouldn't know it. As usual, excellent engineering from Mercury, who set standards in the early 60's that still count (IMHO) as best practice.

Frederick Fennell is right at home in the warmth of these beautifully wrought Ray Wright orchestrations. As he should be; Wright's day job was orchestrating for Radio City Music Hall. The sound is lush, the dynamics amazing, the performance spot on. It gets four stars only because I can't justify five, not having heard the Gershwin half.

I suppose that if you can't find a nice copy to play on a good turntable with a warm amplifier, then this CD would do - but then, you miss the excitement of hearing sound you've been taught can only come from a CD, magically floating straight up from ancient vinyl.
