About the Artist
Liz Harmon was the tenth in a family of 11 children growing up in a North Carolina mountain community called Bethel, near Boone, North Carolina. Her father led a musical family, often saving up months' worth of income and encouraging Liz along with her brothers and sisters, saying, "whoever learns to play this instrument can have it." The family often performed in small Baptist churches all over western North Carolina, and some still detect more than a hint of Bluegrass Gospel in Liz's vocal style. Liz takes great pride in her mountain heritage, frequently performing and recording Appalachian Ballads.
Distractions is Liz Harmon's second solo release. Her first album, "Years From Now" received much local acclaim when it came out in 1997. Previously to that, she was a member of the noted North Carolina folk trio "Wild Mountain Rose," and the bluegrass band "The Bluefields."
Product Description
Liz Harmon's "Distractions" is a unique blend of Country, Bluegrass, Folk and Pop. From the title song, Liz's adaptation of a lesser known Paul McCartney work, to legendary Appalacian Ballads, Liz seamlessly weaves an incredible variety of musical influences. Her sound is often compared to Nanci Griffith, Iris Dement and Alison Krauss, but her fans say she has a style all her own.

This is one of the fiercest grooves anywhere! .......2007-04-03
THIS IS WHAT GROOVE IS ALL ABOUT!!!
If I were to close my eyes, I would swear this is the old seventies
sound... except with a modern twist. R.H. is enough of a funkster to
how to work the funk. The bass and drums (great use of two drummers)
mostly play the bare minimum and the whole band just lays back and waits
for the groove to unfold rather than rushing to the next hook...The jams
don't go on so long that you want to skip ahead to the next tune -
It gets in, blows your mind, and boom - it's out.
Some of the tunes on here are reminiscent of the early Cameo sound,
Even maybe Rick James.
I thought of One Way at times and then Lakeside [I am not kidding!];
another tasted(?) a bit like World Class Wrecking crew... yet they do not
sound like any of these at all, I'm just telling you what I heard in my
own head as well as what my ears heard, know what I mean?
This band plays it all, AND PLAYS IT Fiercely HOT. On the other hand, it is
focused and on time as hell. This is funk and soul with a jazz
sensibility, not (as so much music seems to be) funky Jazz.
Oh, yeah, before I forget - Renee Nuefville can sing her butt off!!! Dare
I say that she somehow channels Chaka Kahn?
If you like funk with enough of a challenge to keep listening to it late
into the night, beyond bedtime, heck, into the wee morning hours 'till
your speakers are starting to rattle apart - buy this. Anyone that says
this is anything but pure genius, shouldn't jam this, they should find
music more to their liking!!!
Hmm, kinda?.......2007-03-04
I was disappointed with this cd. The first few tracks have catchy funk riffs that are great for bass. The rest is just kind of a let down?
I was hoping for a funk style to last for the whole cd, while showing awesome muscicianship. YOu get a little bit of funk, and "okay" players. If you like old school rap, you would probably enjoy this, if you like funk you like the 2nd and the last song.
I like it, I just like how it sounds........2006-08-16
On this the latest disc by Roy Hargrove's RH Factor, you find a combination of warm melodies, funky deep bass groves, slick vocals and the lovely-mellow harmonies of Hargrove's trumpet. Which he uses to good effect, by placing little soundbites of horn in strategic places, for maxium effect. That is old school funk influenced by new school sounds. And just so that it is perfectly clear this guy is the real deal on the instrument. Keep in mind that he also has a second disc (which is gorgeuos) of Acoustic Jazz out with his Quartet. Not to mention that this is his #? release over the last decade. Proving that anything that he is playing is clearly by choice. And either you get it or you don't.
4 1/2 stars - These Distractions are welcome.......2006-08-06
The RH Factor - Distractons (Verve, 2006)
I remember hearing Roy Hargrove on D'Angelo's Voodoo and Erykah Badu's Mama's Gun. His trumpeting made two hot albums even hotter so I wondered how his own records would sound like. This is his second album with his hard bop group, The RH Factor, called Distractions.
I was blown away by his first album (Hard Groove) and was probably expecting Part II so when I first heard this I was like, "Nah, Hard Groove is better." However, after listening this for about a hundred times in one week, the songs started to really sink in and I think that it's the better out of the two (I'm not counting the Strength EP). Out of all of the guest stars from Hard Groove, only D'Angelo comes back for the song Bulls***". Renee Neufville (formerly of Zhane') is a part of the band and she blesses us with such songs as "On the One" and the best track, "Family". Though I'm more a fan of the vocal tracks than the instrumentals, all of the interludes are dope and props to Willie the drummer for doing his thing once again.
At only 38 minutes in length, you're left wanting more (and that's a good thing). But if you're not feeling this kind of jazz, Roy also released Nothing Serious, a straight jazz album but it's equally as good as this one. So you can check out that album instead or both. -EJR
Don't Be Distracted.......2006-08-01
I've listened to this CD several times, and after reading the other reviews here, I just don't hear what is so great about this music. This guy does not impress me whatsoever as a trumpet player. He does not really PLAY the trumpet, he just toots some notes over some beats that some would consider "funk". The only stand-out tracks here are "On The One" and "Family", and they are just mediocre at best. Everything else here is just a couple of 2-minute "snippets" and some Parliament-Funkadelic-inspired pseudo-funk jams. This stuff sounds like this guy got bored one Saturday afternoon and decided to go into his garage and make some noise with his kids. For some real trumpet and real contemporary jazz-funk, I recommend Patches Stewart and Joey Sommerville. Check out their CD's, you won't be disappointed!

A magnificent album, anticipating to some degree the guitar-laden big band sound of Cuneiform labelmates Dr. Nerve on their album SKIN, but with a glorious joie de vivre in place of Nerve's urban angst. Even at its most complex and powerful, the sun still shines through.

Sir Muzak to my ears.......2002-07-18
You know, I wouldn't care, I'm little interested in Sir Mick's pseudo-classical pretensions anyway, but "Distractions" is one of his very few really worthy post-Beatles productions, and I hate to hear it turned into mush -- oh-so-artfully turned into mush, I'll allow, but turned into mush nevertheless. You'll find the superior version of "Distractions" on Sir Elton's "Flowers in the Dirt", half of which is, in my opinion, his best solo record. (The other half is Sir Bob's usual Wings sludge.)
Lovely flute music.......2001-07-13
I love McCartney's piece "A Leaf". Originally written for piano, it was given a beautiful orchestral arrangement for the album, "Working Classical". Here, it is performed by a flute quartet. A fine album.
Sir Paul's Liverpool: A Review.......2000-06-01
Over the years, Beatles tunes have been transcribed for just about every musical arrangement imagineable, but the solo music of Paul McCartney has not enjoyed as wide a palate. Interestingly, the Beatle who is best known today for his timeless and universal melodies is not particularly well-represented through classical arrangements of his solo output.
The recently released "Working Classical" is a good example of how McCartney's special gift for creating classic melodies spans many different forums. The album under consideration here is yet another.
Produced by the Canadian ATMA label, "Sir Paul's Liverpool" is a collection of works by Paul McCartney as performed by a flute quartet -- on the face of it, a somewhat unlikely forum to represent the music, perhaps. But take some insuppressable melodies, treat them to some first-rate arrangements, release them to an accomplished and sensitive group of performers, and the result is predictably wonderful.
The collection begins with a suite called "Love In The Open Air," a three-movement work which uses fragments taken from the film score music to "The Family Way." Based on music McCartney wrote in 1966, his first truly solo composing endeavor, the film score music itself consists of short, elusive fragments that are used primarily to support the ambiance of the film. Here arranger Anthony Rozankovic gives a thoughtful and well-developed treatment to the Samba, Waltz and Rondeau movements. The suite, about ten minutes in length, runs a little less than half the duration of the entire film score output, but gives a good representation of the main themes without too much repetition.
Next comes a longer, more involved arrangement of themes taken from McCartney's first classical composition, The Liverpool Oratorio, with an arrangement by Chantal Hébert. Hébert is the founder of the ensemble, La Flûte Enchantée, and one of its performers. Possibly because she herself is a flutist, I find this to be the most effective arrangement on the disc.
Here, even the choice of melodies shows an intuitive selection process that represents the larger work very well. Hébert seems to have chosen the most workable themes from the Oratorio, and they are: War; School; Mary Dee & Shanty; Spanish Lesson; Father; Crypt; Wedding; Mr Dingle; Lullaby, and March. From the poignancy of Mary Dee and Shanty's themes to the playful little scherzo called "Spanish Lesson," there is cohesion to the ensemble, but also an unflagging freshness about the work.
One senses immediately that the music is very much at home in this arrangement. It's obvious some very careful attention has been giving to voicing, phrasing and doubling to get the most satisfying sound possible from this group, which at times sounds nothing short of symphonic. These musicians have been playing together for quite a while, it seems. They feel their way together very well indeed, and their tuning is excellent.
To my mind this is one of the most effective classical arrangements of vocal music I think I've ever heard. To begin with, there is not a trace of forced syncopation in the rhythmic structure, which can really destroy the classical feel of an arrangement. In the Liverpool Oratorio, there are many examples of recitative-like passages. McCartney is very good at using colloquial speech patterns for his rhythmic models, but for instrumental writing, this doesn't always work. Here the arrangers manage to smooth out the natural syncopations for instrumental performance without affecting the integrity of the original composition.
I really didn't think it was possible to do this with Oratorio, simply because there is so much rhythm in that piece that relies on the natural pattern of speech, but it's done very successfully in this music. It's just one reason I think I like this album so much.
Also on the album is a four-flute arrangement of A Leaf, written originally by McCartney for solo piano, but arranged here by Robert Lafond; and finally Distractions, from the McCartney album Flowers in the Dirt, the arrangement done once again by Mr Rozankovic. Both measure up superbly to the professionalism and the aesthetic excellence of the disc.
All in all I would rate this as a superb album with virtually no weak spots. Unlike so many cross-over albums that make an unsuccessful attempt to draw in both popular and classic audiences, this will satisfy both.

Good Solid R&R.......2003-09-13
During the 80's I lived in Portland, Oregon. As new wave & dance groups like Quaterflash and Nu-Shooz were bringing national focus on the Northwest with their slick, studio sounds, Johnny & The Distractions were a powerhouse cornerstone of the local music scene.
Why? Because Johnny Koonce rocked!!! He was an exciting performer, swinging from the light trusses, climbing the P.A. stacks, dancing thru the audience, and constantly working the stage from one end to the other.
Even more important, his music was not fancy, sequenced, or canned. It was true, straight ahead, demandingly catchy rock & roll... done with real guitars, drums, Hammond organ, and growling, sweat drenched vocals.
The Distractions first released a brilliant, self produced, independant LP in the very early 80's that sold out of the local music stores as fast as they were put on the shelves. This led to they're record deal with A&M, resulting in "Let It Rock", a slicker re-recording of that first indy which, in the corporate studios, had lost some of its fire but sold moderately well. Johnny's attempt at national recognition & acceptance then led to his disbanding the Distractions and releasing a 'solo' album, produced by Al Kooper, with big production, horns and lackluster tunes... everything that the Distractions fanbase had previously admired Johnny's avoidance of.
This fan perception that Johnny had "sold out", along with the one creative critique that had always plaqued Johnny... a vocal comparison to Bruce Springsteen, resulted in Johnny's fading from the spotlight.
These are not the original recordings. In the CD booklet, after a brief rundown of the D's history, Johnny tells us that, despite fan demand, A&M would not give permission to re-issue these vinyl albums on disc, but DID give permission to re-record the material. So, in 1989, Johnny reunited key Distraction members to put this CD together with material from the first 2 albums.
The result is exciting, fun, and for those of us who were there the first time around, enjoyably nostalgic. Although I would truely love to see the original tapes re-issued, these re-recordings of such great songs as "Guys Like Me", the darkly powerful "Octane Twilight", and the hard driving "Shoulder Of The Road" have retained that intensely emmotional & subtley raw quality which originally made Johnny & the Distractions local NW musical heroes of the 80's.
My Desire.......2002-02-10
It is an interesting release--'90 CD of an '80 album. Actually 3 tracks are not on Let It Rock (can't see it now, but #6?--Cry Just a Little?) From the samples, sounds like a more primitive recording, probably in Portland, before they signed with A&M & recorded Let It rock in NY. They were my favorite bar band while in college in Eugene '78-'82. Saw Johnny again around '84 & '85 or '86 in Seattle, but with 2 totally diff versions of the D's (the 2nd time with the Rangehoods, aka The Heats). His solo on cassette was disappointing. I've hoped to see a comeback; & agree that a re-release on CD would be great. Chuckie-Boy Records in Seattle (chuckieboy.com)has done it with The Heats & The Cowboys--how about it? Perhaps they could dig up some old live recordings.
rock as it was meant to be.......2001-05-08
I'll be honest, I've never heard the album My Desire. However, except for the last two songs, every other song on the album was included on the original J & the D's--and man was that the real deal. At the time I first encountered these guys, I was a rebellious teenager listening to anything with cool guitar riffs and angry lyrics. With J & the D's I found both. Now, nearly 20 years later, I'm rapidly becoming an old fart while desparately hanging onto any of that passion and anger I felt so many years ago. The perfect anecdote to my condition is a good listening to J & the D's, specifically the song "My Desire". If that song doesn't make every man who finds himself bogged down in the daily routine of life want to howl at the moon, then nothing will. Don't get me wrong, I love my family and wouldn't trade my current life for anything (ok, almost anything), but when I'm feeling a little frisky, J & the D's and a six pack of beer can go a long ways towards providing me with the necessary relief. These guys rock, in a guy sort of way. If that makes sense, then buy the album, down a few beers, go out in the garage, crank up the stereo, and vent a little.
Johnny & the Distractions--My Desire.......1999-12-21
When Johnny & the Distractions roared through the Northwest here back in the early 80's, they literally tore through the region. They flooded the local Seattle airwaves for a few glorious years.
Most of the material on 'My Desire' (7) are re-recordings of songs from their '81 vinyl 'Let It Rock' (which rocked full throttle without a clunker in the bunch-all gems). While the performances here were done many years after the originals, the 'hearts on their sleeve' passion of youth is gone. Don't get me wrong, these are very good performances, and for any fans of Springsteen/Seger/heartland rock, this is a welcome addition.
Perhaps A&M will one day give the Distractions their due & issue their early stuff on a comp, perhaps with some of Koonce's '83 solo material. They were both good songwriters & performers. The Distractions deserve a good catalog representation because, when they were young and hungry, they cooked.
i wish there were more!.......1999-04-17
if you like springsteen, john cafferty, southside johnny. then you will love this cd. i only wish there were more by these guys, upbeat with great vocals. give this a try you won't regret it.
