5 out of 5 stars I loved this when I was a kid.......2007-02-27

My mom bought a Tom T Hall album for me when I was about 7, and I listened to it all the time (I'm now 45). I looked for this music for a while and never found it when my kids were small, now I'll buy it for my grand niece and several of my friend's small children, and one for me. This is simple, good children's music. I only wish more kids would listen to this kind of stuff.

I always thought Tom T Hall was my friend when I was growing up and I still feel like an eight year old when I hear Sneaky Snake. These days, anytime a friend or coworker has a child from 3 to 10 I try to use this CD as a gift. Once it won over a suspicious 5 year old whose mother I was dating. Even though she thought Fox Hollow was spooky, she would "woof" along in time.

Very cool album to share with your children or to offer as a gift for a friend's child.

This record was a childhood favourite of mine. It had been a number of years since I last heard it but I always remembered it with great fondness. Now that I have listened anew, I know why I loved it as a child. I still love it as an adult. The messages contained in the songs are great lessons for kids but the music can span the generations with its appeal. I would definitely recommend this album for grown-ups and children alike.

That's what I hear almost every time we get in the car. And on a recent three hour car trip we had "Sneaky Snake" on our CD repeat. This is a really great CD and my daughter loves it more than any other. She can sing at least parts of almost all the songs. I saw Tom T. Hall in concert once, years ago, and I would have never dreamed that my daughter would fall in love with his music, too. Buy it!

These songs have stood the test of time - I bought the CD to replace the LP so the next generation could hear them. Easy on adult ears - think of the opposite sound to the Chipmunks & you've got the idea.

Some kids' records perch themselves atop an anti-Barney platform in the name of parental palatability, others reach out with artist recognition. But The Bottle Let Me Down: Songs for Bumpy Wagon Rides goes one better, reversing the whole premise so that parents, for an entire 26-track album, fully reclaim their listening rights. So what if "Rubber Ducky," "On Top of Spaghetti," "The Three Billy Goats Gruff," and "Señor El Gato" are among the song titles--this is music meant to celebrate Mom and Dad's last remaining shreds of coolness, from the retro-inspired jewel case to the alt-country acts' indie credibility. Alejandro Escovedo laments hitting the big One-O ("Candy just doesn't taste as good anymore") on "Sad & Dreamy"; Rosie Flores sends 'em flocking to the speakers with first track "Red, Red Robin"; Robbie Fulks feels the pain of "Godfrey," the sickly unemployed amateur children's magician; and the Cornell Hurd Band makes a compelling case for napkin use with "Don't Wipe Your Face on Your Shirt." Also weighing in on such subjects as funky butts, the difficulty of being green, and weasels, beans, frogs, and dogs are Devil in a Woodpile, Rex Hobart & the Misery Boys, and Split Lip Rayfield. Granted, grownups with R&B, jazz, or rock leanings won't get as much mileage out of this CD as those who sniff the twang in song titles like "Hinky Dinky Dee" and like the aroma, but there's no denying its down-home, keep-it-real musicianship--everything from Dobros to duckies do their part. We really enjoy this CD, as does our 3-year-old daughter. Classics like "On Top of Spaghetti" are mixed with new songs like "Don't Wipe Your Face On Your Shirt," a particular favorite of mine. In my opinion, Robbie Fulks' song "Godfrey" does work on more than one level -- nothing I think a kid would ever, ever get, but the lyrics did cause me to raise an eyebrow slightly (I mean, this is Robbie Fulks we're talking about... he's got a pretty edgy sense of humor, and let me be clear that I know this because I own several of his discs). I probably wouldn't give this CD as a gift unless I knew the parents well and felt confident they wouldn't have a negative reaction to "Godfrey" in particular.

That said, this is a highly entertaining compilation, and one of the better kids' CDs I've come across.

There are some fantastic songs on this CD and others that aren't quite to our taste. All in all it's a good CD and since there are so many fun songs, we just skip the one or two we don't care for.

Overall- it's nice to have a kids CD that I can listen to without pulling my hair out!

There are two reasons why I decided to make this my first review of a product ever:

1. This is probably the BEST children's music CD out on the market and it is most enjoyable to listen to over and over again (as we parents do when our kids like a particular collection of songs and request them time and time again). This CD is a unique collection of oldies and some new goodies; each and every one of them a gem. I am a music enthusiast that has been rather disappointed with many of the children's music being mass prduced today and found this one to be exceptional. It features a group of Chicago musicians and is released by an independent record label in Chicago, Bloodshot Records, who need to start working on their next chilren's album...

2. To the person who thinks that Godfrey is about a pedophile (not to trivialize your concern):
a) please listen to the words and do not overread the simplcity of the lyrics.
b) accept Godfrey as what he is, a crazy, cranky, old, "sickly, unemployed, amateur magician" who hangs around the playground because his only captive audiences for his gross (BUT NOT SUGGESTIVE) tricks are schoolchildren.

4 out of 5 stars Read this review before you buy.......2005-05-04

The high quality of the music on this CD is notable. The version of 'Senor Don Gato' alone is worth the $13.99 pricetag. However this is not a CD for you if you are looking for upbeat, light hearted humor for young children. There are a few songs that many would feel are of questionable content with a significant gross-out factor. In particular, the song 'Godfrey' which in my view is only appropriate for children who are old enough to understand black comedy. The song tells the story of "Godfrey the sickly, unemployed, amateur children's magician". It describes how Godfrey makes magic shows with mucus root-beer floats. The song ends with him in a straight jacket never to be seen again. A couple other tracks "Funky Butt" and I'm my own Grandpa" might not be what you want a preschooler singing.

This is a great CD, but preview the mentioned tracks before buying.

My one-year-old, my husband, and I all love this CD. The alternative country artists manage to simultaneously bring something innovative, but classic to each track. The performances are quite clever, and I can see my son listening to this well into his preschool and elementary years. He currently smiles and dances to the music and singing. But he will come to appreciate some of the lyrical nuances as he gets older too. Personally, I love this because I don't get bored listening to it; in part because of the great sounding music and singing, but also because it's a compilation . . . a perfect combination in my opinion!

The liner notes to baby records could be lifted from one jewel case to the next with nary an eye ever batted, because they all trot out some form of the same trite message: "It doesn't matter what you sing to your baby, so long as you sing." Don't count Sara Hickman out--on Newborn (and on the logical successor, Toddler), she lets us know from the get-go that "my wish was to create an album for parents who have trepidation about singing to their newborns." Still, and despite the inclusion of standards like "Hush" and "You Are My Sunshine" on this not overly touchy-feely 15-tracker, she's concocted something special, outdoing her well-intentioned peers by performing originals so repetitive (the soothing "It's Alright") or ridiculous ("Goop's In It," about a booger-infested baby peeper) that singing along, infant at your side, seems right. Hickman wins us over with informality; in effect, she hands over her baby monitor, letting us listen in on stuff that's spilled spontaneously (and, because she's Sara Hickman, melodically) from her lips while gazing dopily at her own newborn. Occasionally, she can go overboard with the candor--listening to the ballad "Lily," written for her daughter, feels like opening somebody else's love letter--but forgiving her is easy, first because by being so open she becomes an instant surrogate friend to isolated new parents; and second, because her voice, evocative of Karen Carpenter on "Lily" and of Linda Ronstadt on "It's Alright," will tame the testiest baby. It's vocal crushed velvet. Give this album to stupefied new moms--by not being overly concerned with making sense, it may be the most sensible baby album you can buy. --Tammy La Gorce

Going to a baby shower soon? Friends or family members about to have a kid? This is more than a CD of some music -- is family intimacy in a box!

Seriously, this CD was created to encourage parents to sing to their children. Simple songs that are soothing to babies. One of the songs was made up by Sara while walking the floor with her colicky firstborn. This is the kind of stuff that settles the stomach of both parents and babies. Beautiful stuff.

I received this album as a shower gift and I can't tell you how much it has meant to my whole family, even the grandparents. Sara has a way of verbalizing how amazing children and your love for them is. I plan on buying every product she ever produces because she is uplifting and makes both my daughter and I feel great.

A friend gave us a copy of Sara Hickman's Newborn and Toddler cd's when our daughter was born and they are forever on our stereo... in the livingroom, the nursery, and the car. Newborn is such a sweet cd that has calming songs as well as a few funny and playful songs (good for dads to sing along with!). The Toddler cd is great fun for when our little one is wide awake and in need of entertainment. You don't feel so ridiculous being silly when you are singing along with Sara! Both cd's are essential for new parents. We treasure them!

If my now 6 months old daughter (who has been Sara's fan for 3 months) was writing a review, it would go something like this. "I love to listen to Sara's CD. She has a beautiful voice that instantly makes me forget to be fussy. I could listen to her singing for hours, and indeed I do - and never tire! The song "goop in your eyes" makes me smile, esp when mama tries to sing along (she is NOT a very good singer). My only complaint is that the pauses between the songs are too long. Sometimes I have just enough time to remember what was making me fussy, but then I forget again when the next song starts!" --- aah, isn't she cute?

This cd is perfect for kids! I grew up listening to this tape and at 22 I still know all the words by heart! Sing Song Kitty was my favorite song.
When I have kids, they'll be listening to this cd!

My husband and I purchased this cd for our new granddaughter. We believe that Doc Watson is a National Treasure, and are proud that he resides in North Carolina where we have multiple opportunities to see/hear him play. The songs are a little faster paced on this cd. "Tennessee Stud" is our favorite, and we're sure that Hannah will know all the words by the time she's able to talk!

This is one of my very favorite collection of kids songs! My two children love it dearly. It is listened to and sung along with nearly every day. I highly advise to anyone with or without kids!

My son goes to sleep with this album at least 3 nights a week. It goes on car trips with us and is one of the few that you don't want to throw out the window after 50 miles. It contains many wonderful folk songs that kids and adults love to sing along with.

His music was original, while taking bits and pieces from traditional tunes. He really does not get the credit he deserves! I never imagined he meant for some of his songs to be played the way he played them.

Percy Grainger was a man of spectacular gifts. He was one of the most original composer/arrangers in the early part of this century. He was also a spectacular pianist in an age of spectacular pianists. This amazing CD documents Grainger's formidible gifts. It cannot be over-praised. Both the music and the performances are well worthy of any piano lover's attention. Don't miss this one!

The performances contained herein are very good. I only wish there were more Sousa marches in the collection. However, those that are there are well-performed and the recording is very good.

      My seven-year-old son loves bluegrass....what he's managed to hear in snatches, anyway. I got him this collection, and he and his siblings LOVE it!! All of the songs are suitable for children, and the performances are some of the finest that bluegrass has to offer. I highly recommend this one for children of all ages!
