Musically speaking, children of the '70s subscribe to a tribe mentality: At first glance, former Stooges fanatics may have little in common with onetime discomaniacs, but get them together and odds are they'll bond over a mutual belief that Cliff Richard's "We Don't Talk Anymore" was, for its time, one hot track. Which is why Donny Osmond did himself a favor by recording this batch of retreads--what he loses in nostalgia points for making a disc without Marie (all these years later, there's still an element that prefers a little bit of country with its little bit of rock'n'roll), he makes up for in timeless material that, not incidentally, is very well sung. It's possible to hear Dan Hill's ever-tender "Sometimes When We Touch" here without missing Hill for a second, for instance. And because Donny's nice-guy reputation precedes him by decades, he's a natural at putting his own sunshiny spin on Johnny Nash's "I Can See Clearly Now." If Love Songs disappoints even a sliver, it's because the title limits the song selection to disallow tracks that could have formed an equally enjoyable record: Goofy Songs of the 70s. Suffice it to say that Leo Sayer's "When I Need You" leaves a listener with a deep hankering to hear Donny's rendition of "You Make Me Feel Like Dancin'," too. --Tammy La Gorce

There were some nights during his triumphant starring run as the villainous Gaston in the Broadway production of Beauty and the Beast when Donny Osmond's mind was racing. No, he wasn't trying to remember his next line; rather, he was thinking about the album he was in the process of recording. Backstage. In his dressing room. "It was totally bizarre" he laughs. "I would perform my role onstage, and then I would run back to my dressing room and fix a vocal I didn't like. Sometimes it was just a word; other times it was an entire verse or chorus.

The album is called Love Songs of the 70s, and once you hear it, you'll know why. Donny gave it his all -- he could perform vocals to completed musical tracks in his dressing room whenever he liked, a ritual he followed each afternoon -- and, as it so happened, some nights as well. Describing himself as a "Type-A perfectionist," Donny admits his that work habits might have confounded his co-stars. "But when a record means as much as this one, you do whatever it takes to make it special."

True to its title, Love Songs of the 70s is a collection of some of the most memorable romantic pop and R&B ballads of a golden, multi-platinum era. Just a casual glance at some of the songs will transport listeners back to a special place in their lives: "Laughter in the Rain," "Oh, Girl," "If," "Let's Stay Together," "How Deep Is Your Love," "You Are So Beautiful," -- these are some of the priceless selections Donny has chosen for this remarkable set. "That's what's so amazing about these songs," says Donny. "They're time capsules, capable of moving you in so many powerful ways. What's more, if a song is truly a classic, as these certainly are, their importance grows through the decades because of what you, the listener, bring to them. I've always loved hearing these songs, and I especially love singing them."

An underappreciated voice!.......2007-07-05

Initially I was not happy Donny chose to remake 70's classic love songs as I was hoping for some new material like he wrote and performed in his previous CD, "What I Meant to Say," but his vocal stylings and interpretations breathe fresh air into these songs. And I cannot imagine a better person for bringing back 70's music.

"Laughter in the Rain" is a song that does not sound dated, and Donny's vocals have a nice, warm feeling that illicit memories of walking "hand-in-hand with the one I love." I wish it would be released as a single because the song is much better than some of the crap that "adult contemporary" radio stations are playing these days. I suspect because of his former teen idol image, many radio stations don't play Donny's new songs and that is a shame as he is an underappreciated singer with a soulful voice. Maybe if he quits doing TV game shows and the like, he will be taken more seriously by the radio industry.

Check out, "Will It Go Round in Circle," a funky remake of the Billy Preston hit; Osmond gives it a nice funky flair with a different tone to his voice. Many would be surprised to hear this song because of Donny's former image, but he works the r & b, funk groove well and needs to do more songs like this one instead of so many ballads. Yeah, "Play That Funky Music White Boy!"

Smooth, professional renditions of favourites from the 70's as would be expected of a performer with Donny's credentials. "Laughter in the Rain" and "If" my particaular favourites. Enjoyable, but I did prefer his original compositions on the previous album more.

Donny's voice gets better with age and I love hearing all the love songs from the seventies. Super soft and sexy.....very romantic music.

A MUST OWN CD! FABOULOUS!.......2007-06-25

I love this CD! Since my husband surprised me with it, I cannot stop listening to it. Donny Osmond's voice is so beautiful, flawless really, and his interpretations of the songs are wonderful. After telling all my friends about it and enduring their "teen-beat like" giggles, they listen and call back raving that is their favorite album. I hope Donny Osmond is receiving all the positive feedback and accolades he so deserves and I pray he is working on his next album for our listening pleasure - I will be waiting anxiously!!!

After listening and adoring Donny for over 30 years, I truly enjoyed this CD. It's songs I loved in high school and Donny sings them beautifully!

"Supergroups" is a misnomer here.......2005-01-13

Best of the 1970's "Supergroups"? This is the best group of songs they could come up with? Music from bands like Boston, Kansas, Styx, ELO, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Santana and BTO are great choices. But, who in their right frame of mind would consider Grand Funk, Rare Earth, Sugarloaf, or the Little River Band as "Supergroups"? Okay, the Little River Band had several hits, but they certainly weren't "Super". Some of these bands are so dang obscure that I could DARE most of America to name ONE other hit from half the bands on this disc, and I'd bet they'd pull a brain muscle and hemmorhage trying to do it. 14 total tracks. 7 songs are worthy classics, but the other 7 totally miss the boat. If I were producing a disc with these songs, I definitely would not have used the label "Supergroups". Perhaps a more apt title for this CD would be "Poor Man's Hit & Miss Tunes From The 70's". Sound production is less than crisp. Makes a nice drink coaster.

Good Stuff.......2003-01-07

Not a bad collection of 70's stuff, every song on this CD will be pleasing to the ear. Boston, Santana, ELO and others are represented as well as many other groups. If you are into the music of the 70's then this will fullfill all your expectations.

Great Collection!.......2002-05-19

If you're like me and don't own all of the original (albums!) tapes from these bands, then you'll love this CD. I often try to find classic rock compilations that have REALLY good songs on them, but most of the time I only like about 4 or 5 songs on any one collection. Not so with this CD! I snapped this one up because I totally enjoy every one of these songs. And several of these bands were one or two hit wonders, so why buy the band's whole tape in order to get one or two songs? Okay, so I'm not a die hard fan. Whether you have the original tapes or not, you'll like the variety and awesome guitar on this collection of classic 70's rock.

When this material originally resurfaced in an earlier Rhino-celebrates-the-'70s program, many rock scribes contorted themselves into revisionist pretzels: this isn't so bad, they argued--none too convincingly. There'll be none of that here: much of the music on this colossal box set is godawful. The world doesn't miss the likes of Sammy ("Chevy Van") Johns and Sammy ("Candy Man") Davis. Or at least it doesn't miss the records they cut during the decade of disaster flicks and Jonathan Livingston Seagull. That said, this elaborate box is something to behold. The lovingly compiled 92-page booklet provides background on the ridiculous (David Soul, C.W. McCall, Carl Douglas) and the sublime (Parliament, James Brown, the Staple Singers), and the music swings on the same pendulum, with Harry Chapin, Bill Withers, and Cat Stevens sitting amid Wayne Newton, The Captain & Tennille, and Meco's jittery electro-take on the Star Wars theme. Seven discs, 160 selections! To paraphrase a popular ad slogan of the era, you won't believe you listened to the whole thing. --Steven Stolder

Peace, man............2007-05-31

O.K. I'm 38. I was born in 1968 and I wasn't into a lot of the 70's music until the decade was on its way out. But my parents had so many great vinyl compilations by that time and I had my cool new little record player that I HAD to listen to all the songs.
And now, I find that I'm doing the same thing with this set of CD's! It's freakin' 1979 all over again!
How can you cram so much 70's goodness into this box set? And to get the ORIGINAL songs from the ORIGINAL stars is just groovy. Too many compilations now have the original stars doing remakes of their songs and it just seems pointless to me.
Brandy (You're A Fine Girl), unabashedly my favourite song of ALL TIME, (just ask those that have to endure it EVERY time I karaoke) finds a great spot here in its ORIGINAL glory.
If you're thinking of getting a 70's compilation, STOP THINKING!! BUY THIS ON IMPULSE AND ENJOY A HASTY DECISION FOR ONCE!!
There'll be no time to feel any guilt when you're singing along to all the classics you grew up with.
"Billy, Don't Be A Hero!" "You're No Good" if you don't "Rock The Boat" and "Let Your Love Flow"! "Me and Mrs. Jones" will be "Stuck In The Middle With You" just "Smokin' In The Boys Room" if you don't "Get Down Tonight"!!

The great, the good, the bad and the plain awful, in one delightful package.......2007-04-15

So the decade of the '70's corresponds to my junior high, high school and college years. During that time AM and later FM radio supplied the leitmotifs for that era of my life. This CD collection captures completely what we listened to as fed by the top 40 charts of the time. Much of this material is outstanding, some of it was silly and some of it was awful (Morris Albert's Feelings, Terry Jacks Seasons in the Sun! So bad it is fun to listen to). This magnificent compilation captures it completely in all its '70's era glory. And in typical Rhino fashion, it is elegantly packaged with an outstanding booklet and boxed set. True I'm biased in that I even liked the sound bites.

It is a bit expensive, and some have criticized the inclusion of the Top 40 single versions over the definitive album versions, but hey guys/gals, this is what they played on the radio at the time. Also missing are some of the superstars, but as the booklet says, you probably have lots of those already (e.g., Paul McCartney, Elton John, mid-period Stones, Billy Joel, etc.)

I was hesitant about the cost, but after one full listen through, I'm extremely pleased. Thank you Rhino (and thanks to Amazon, too who listed the delivery time as several weeks but it came within one week).

GREAT MUSIC, DODGY PACKAGE.......2007-03-12

This is as comprehensive as a Seventies collection can get. The MIAs are obvious (no Eagles, Neil Diamond, Fleetwood Mac, Carpenters, Pink Floyd) but what's surprising is the number of major artists that DID get on here. The sound quality of 'Superstar' isn't great, the soundbites ARE fabulous, but the packaging is hopeless. While the write-ups are excellent, and the content generally flawless, the booklet itself fell apart after I read through it three times. I know for a fact mine isn't the only one this happened to. Is this a ruse to pretend it's more than 25 years old?

I Knew There Was A Reason I Was At CBGB's.......2006-12-23

A friend gifted me with this box set. Normally I love Rhino box sets - owning all variations of Nuggets, Left of the Dial, No Thanks, and others. Why wouldn't I love this one too? Well, because what was on the radio in the 1970's was enough for you to cover your ears screaming and run, not walk, to Max's Kansas City or CBGB's to see punk being born. Don't get me wrong there are some gems here - mostly in the soul / funk / R&B selections. For every "Got to Give it Up" or "Family Affair" or "Me and Mrs. Jones" or "Band of Gold" there's some abortion from David Soul or "Billy Don't Be A Hero." Just when it gets a run of great tunes, something truly awe-inspiringly dreckful screws it up for a couple of songs. Would've been better to put like songs with like songs so you can skip an entire CD of MOR monstrosities, and enjoy the rest of them. Best to look for soul, funk, & disco collections from the same time period. Does anybody really need to hear "I Am Woman" or "One Toke Over the Line"? For perverse AM radio-philes who still wear shag haircuts & Members Only jackets, I give it 5 stars.

Pieces of my youth.......2006-02-23

Everytime I get a CD filled with songs from my youth such as Vol 19, I feel young again! What a great mental health break!

I've been looking all over for "Don't Give Up On US Baby" and "I Like Dreaming".

Okay, so this CD has the overplayed "sell out" songs, like "Still The One", used to promote ABC's (?) new season in '76, and the "Rocky" theme that put Stallone on the map, but we also get some great slow ballads. "Torn Between Two Lovers", used as the theme and inspiration for a forgettable TV movie starring Lee Remick, certainly survives well on its own. DJ's used to comment they could not believe "I Like Dreamin'" was only from '76, because it sounded much older, much more "classic". "Don't Give Up On Us", belted out by a fellow who was in a forgettable TV show of his own in his spare time, is still worth humming and quoting. "Jeans On" is musically under-rated, and also notable for its "timestamp" of 70's culture when it mentions the "tiger in my tank". Andrew Gold could do a story song when he tried. Is "Lonely Boy" about his own sibling rivalry problems? Climax Blues Band has an unusually funky entry with "Couldn't Get It Right", even though they went on to a more mellow sound in 1981 with "I Love You". "Undercover Angel", another fun but naughty 70's song, has a special place in my heart. Used to blush every time I heard it.

A continuation of the "Have a Nice Day" CD series, Volume 19 is another truck load of hits. This Volume seems to contain a bunch of tracks from the 1977 era. Do you remember what you were doing back then??

All of the CD's in this series contain extensive sleeve notes on all the tracks with release dates. There's that radio classic which I think we've all heard a thousand times?.. 10CC's "the things we do for love". This volume has a number of tracks that have been released on CD for the first time. What about Burton Cummings "stand tall". Other tracks include the original Rocky theme, Orleans "still the one", Mary MacGregor's "Torn between two lovers", Adam O day's "undercover angel", Andrew Gold's "lonely boy" and a few tracks I've never really heard of. But for the songs I've listed, certainly make this disc worthwhile

I've had this disc since 1993 and it still an entertaining,relaxing piece of nostalgia today."Super Hits Of The 70's:Have A Nice Day Vol.19" is an amazing recap of the softer side of 1977,featuring such super-guilty-pleasures like Mary MacGregor's "Torn Between Two Lovers",former Guess Who frontman's Burton Cummings "Stand Tall","Starksy And Hutch" actor David Soul's "Don't Give Up On Us",Andrew Gold's "Lonely Boy",Kenny Nolan's "I Like Dreamin",and Alan O'Day's oh-so-70's "Undercover Angel" along with likable,upbeat soft-rockers like Orleans "Still The One",Climax Blues Band's "Couldn't Get It Right" and 10cc's "The Things We Do For Love".The catchy TV jingle(David Dundas's "Jeans On")and the ubiquitous "Rocky" theme(Bill Conti's "Gonna Fly Now")provide contrast to the sweet,sentimental pop of the rest of the set,but for the most part,HANY Vol.19 captures the 70's at its sappiest,which means it's completly successful in its goals.(By the way,all these songs made the Top 20,10 of which made the Top 10,and 4 of which made it all the way to No.1!)

Even though that I'm born in 1980, I like music from the 1970's/1980's (except for some of that new wave ...) cause the songs have a better tone to it and everytime when I do listen to those songs, it just makes me wanna sing.

70'S HAVE A NICE DAY VOL 10.......2007-03-08

70's Flash Back.......2007-01-10

For those of you who can remember the 70's, this CD provides some great memory releasers (assuming you have fond memories of the 70's). It's a nice collection of some of the hits of the 70's that were not necessarily Blockbusters. Some of these songs are seldom played on radio stations these days, so you may have forgotten all about them (again, assuming you were there in the first place). So, if you are a very young man like me in your late 40's, this CD may just push your buttons! And if you are much younger, well, you may just catch some great music that your parents listened to decades ago!

+ 1/2 stars...More Big Hits Than the Previous Volumes.......2004-02-29

What Rhino's Have a Nice Day series does, is put together a collection not of the biggest hits by the biggest stars, but rather an eclectic collection of big (and not so big) hits by artists who for the most part had very brief careers on the charts. And with volume 10 (which focuses mostly on 1973), they continue to do a very good job.

A noticeable difference with this volume, however, is how many of these were in fact huge hits. All but two of them cracked the Top 10. The first that did not is folk artist Loudon Wainwright's tribute to road kill, "Dead Skunk." [Though this was his lone hit, he continues to record to this day and has a legion of rabid fans--myself included. (Check out my review of his latest SO DAMN HAPPY.)] The other answers the question "What did Looking Glass do to follow up with their No. 1 hit "Brandy (You're a Fine Girl)?" The answer is their No. 33 (and last) hit "Jimmy Loves Mary-Anne."

Sometimes it's better to have been just a one-hit wonder. Albert Hammond had a million-seller with "It Never Rains in Southern California," and Stealers Wheel (which included Gerry Rafferty) hit the Top 10 with the infectious "Stuck in the Middle With You." But does anyone remember either of their follow-up hits? [Answer: It was "I'm a Train" (No. 31) and "Star" (No. 29 ) respectively. ("Star" shows up on vol. 12.)]

A couple of the one-hit wonders pulled off the ultimate by taking their only charting single all the way to No. 1. Vicki "Mama's Family" Lawrence did it with "The Night That the Lights Went Out In Georgia," as did Stories' song of interracial love "Brother Louie."

Other one-hit wonders that seldom get anthologized are the 30s-inspired "Oh, Babe, What Would You Say?," Edward Bear's heart-wrenching "Last Song," and Skylark's romantic "Wildflower." [Trivia alert: David Foster, a member of Skylark, went on to be a top producer of hits like "Hard To Say I'm Sorry" and "St. Elmo's Fire."]

All things considered, there's a lot of memories in these songs--some you probably haven't heard since they were hits on the radio. The only reason I've never been able to give any of these a four-star rating (or higher) is the limited bang for your buck that Rhino gives you. Yeah, the smiley face CD is cute, and the liner notes are filled with trivia...but the bottom line is that you are only getting a dozen songs! With that in mind, it's simply a matter of how many memories does THIS particular batch of songs have for you?

Good old Rock and Roll.......2003-07-29

It is hard to find a bad CD in this anthology series, if you are a true fan of 70's Rock and Roll. The diversity of selections in the series is extraordinary. This volume has a number of songs that make you want to sing your heart out along with the group. The best in this category are "Cover of the Rolling Stone" by one of my favorite groups, Dr Hook, "Drift Away" by Dobie Gray, and "Oh Babe, What Would You Say?" by Hurricane Smith. But almost all the songs in this volume have their good points and I would rate 9 of them in the "I want" category. This CD is well worth the price as are most of the other CD's in this series.

I had been searching for a song that has been running through my mind since the 1970's. I found that song on this cd, it was Oh, Babe, What Would You Say?! This cd has IMO 7 very good songs.(1,2,3,5,7,8, and 12) It also has 3 decent songs. (6,9,10). It has one below average song, (4) and one song that I had never heard before. (11) The two biggest surprises to me were 8 and 12. I very much like both of those songs, but I didn't reconize them by song title. Drift Away goes like this Singing:: Give me the beat boys, to soothe my soul...I want to get lost in your Rock N roll and drift away.... I would also recommend vol 14 and 21 in this series and THE BABYS ANTHOLOGY with great songs like ,"Isn't it time, Back on my feet again, and Midnight Rendezvous" Everytime I think of you and Anytime is good too. If you liked John Waite in the 1980's, you should like the BABY'S as John was the lead singer of the Baby's in 1975. John's 1984 hit was Missing You. Indy :o)

Great CD!.......2007-06-15

This is a great CD to listen to. The minute it arrived at my house I couldn't wait to listen to the songs that I most wanted to hear--"Boys Are Back in Town", "Hello It's Me" and "All Right".
Todd Rundgren's song kept echoing in my head and I was telling myself not to get it now. But I had to feed into my conscious and get it. And I am enjoying it already.
There are songs that I have heard but never knew who sang them. This is a good compilation of songs selected.

All right. Any collection of 70s pop music that doesn't include the Bee Gees is asking for trouble. I wouldn't say steer clear of this particular little collection, but it does tend to make one suspicious.

Tonight's the Night.......2007-02-10

I was hunting up a good compilation of the 70s and was pleasantly surprised with this collection. It covers quite a range of golden hits from the era, guaranteed to satisfy your nostalgic fix. Or, for the younger folk, it gives you a pretty solid idea of the music from the era, ranging from Blondie's Heart of Glass to Lynyrd Skynyrd's Free Bird, with everything from YMCA to Smokin' In the Boys' Room thrown in. There are many notable omissions, no Fleetwood Mac, Bob Seeger, or Bruce Springsteen, but those were the albums you probably held onto. Overall this is a pretty good collection, modelled along the lines of a Top 40. It will make you feel like you are back at a high school dance, with just about enough music on 2 CDs to keep you going the whole night long.

as with all music, the beauty is in the eyes of the beholder. and as such, this cd has some good and some not so good. the good is really good and the not is just stuff i didn't like. it is a worthy purchase though as it takes you down that road (wherever it may be!) to old memories and good times.

From new wave (The Cars, Blondie) to disco (Donna Summer, Gloria Gaynor) and Southern rock (Lynyrd Skynyrd) to funk (Earth, Wind & Fire, The Commodores), Hip-O's 40-track collection is packed with some of the biggest hits of the era.

Not only did the decade provide a variety of musical styles, the way music was presented to the public was changing, too. The once dominant Top 40 AM radio gave way to FM stations and AOR formats. As such you get a mixed bag of LP versions (for example, the 5:14 version of "She's Gone" and the 5:59 version of "I'm Not in Love) along with radio edits ("Does Anybody Really Know What Time It Is?" is cut from 4:33 to 3:18 and "Blinded by the Light" is nearly cut in half--the LP version was 7:08 while the single version was 3:47). Since many listeners will recognize both versions, it's not a big deal that about half the songs are presented in their single-release version. [I do, however, have a complaint with the version of "Maggie May" that was used. The LP version was 5:45 and the radio edit was 5:11. The version here is futher truncated to 3:41!]

The 20-page booklet is serviceable, but hardly essential. There are a handful of pictures, track listing (with release dates and highest chart position) and a 6-page essay by Mike Ragogna.[The essay does clarify that in Springsteen's lyrics to "Blinded by the light," he in fact wrote "...revved up like a deuce..."--NOT a feminine hygiene product. So could we all start singing the right words?!!]

If you're looking for a fun trip down memory lane, it's hard to beat '70s GOLD. [Running Time: Disc 1 - 78:34, Disc 2 - 77:29] VERY HIGHLY RECOMMENDED

You'll dig this "More Today Than Yesterday".......2007-07-03

As the author of the Jefferson Airplane book "Take Me To A Circus Tent" and a former radio disc-jockey, I am often asked to write and or discuss various recordings from the 60's and 70's.

Super Hits of the '70s: Have a Nice Day, Vol. 1- The initial release of the series made a solid splash for its consistency and musical diversity.

The volumes become a portable jukebox with any selection a memory of yesteryear. The opening track "More Today Than Yesterday" by the Spiral Starecase could be a Stevie Wonder composition. The production is tremendous and the vocals resonate from the speakers.

"Na Na Hey Hey Kiss Him Goodbye" from Steam became not only a hit single but a sports anthem. Played at hundreds of venues after the home team would have a victory in hand the tune is going to soon celebrate its fortieth birthday but not look older than one.

"Venus" - (The Shocking Blue) The opening second keyboard sound is hypnotic. It had hit written all over.

"Come Saturday Morning" By the Sandpipers has one of the best vocal performances ever. A timeless tune that could never outstay its welcome.

The only pitfall with the entire series is the playing time should fill up a CD. That is why bonus track were invented. Excluding the clock, this a wonderful ride to the past.

Fun, Fun, Fun (no T-Bird required).......2006-04-05

Today's rock historians will tell you that the late 60s and early 70s were a time of big changes in the music world, and to a degree, they're right: The Who the Pretty things were inventing the rock-opera, James Brown was turning the R&B world on its head, the Velvet Underground were birthing the alternative rock scene, the Grateful Dead were expanding the length and very definition of rock at their life-altering concerts, etc., etc. Yes, rock was, for better or worse, growing up and movin' on out. Fortunatly, nobody thought to tell the chartmaking, AM radio crowd. And so, at the beginning of the 70s, record labels were still churning out platter after platter of simplistic, catchy, glorious, and downright fun pop brilliance. The first in a series of 25 (!) discs, Have a Nice Day, V.1 cobbles together twelve pop delights from 1969 and 1970, and each one is a winner: The disc's oppener, "More Today than Yesterday," is a glorious, soulful, propulsive single from the summer of 1969. "Na Na Hey Hey Kiss Him Goodbye," (whose chorus is probably in the Constitution somewhere) is much more than a tune to play off the losers of cuise ship dance contests: With its chiming bells, lulling handclaps, ethereal vocals, and majestic organ playing, it's an otherworldly pop confection. "Smile A Little Smile For Me" is pure hand-clapping, singalong accoustic pop-rock catchiness. And then there's "Cherry Hill Park," a hook-soaked, slinking pop tune with lyrics as risque as anything the early 'Stones ever wrote. And whatever you do, don't overlook the wah-wahing blue-eyed soul of "Arizona" with its sublime, laid back vocals and magestic chorus. "Come Saturday Morning," with its gorgeous vocals and dreamy atmosphere, sounds like a lost Byrds single. And as for the less poppy entries on this disc, there are plenty of great rockers aboard: The rediculously catchy bounce of "Venus," the eye-wateringly heavy "Mississippi Queen," and the country-blues-rocker "The Rapper" are sweet highlights. All in all, a great disc. If you thought that the good stuff never hit the charts, pick this up and prepare to be re-educated.

Have A Nice Day; Volume One IS # One But It's A Tie With Volume Two .......2005-09-13

In my opinion: Twenty Three out of the Twenty Five versions of this, Super Hits Of The 70s; Have A Nice Day, series have their ups and downs and some are better than others and there are several one and two hit wonders on them but the bottom line is this.... Volume One IS Number One and Volume Two is right along beside it. In otherwords; if both volumes were playing against each other in a ballgame the game would most definitely end in a tie. From start to finish those two are solid and the quality of the music is nothing less than fabulous.
This Vol. One starts out with Spiral Staircase's, More Today Than Yesterday, and it most definitely will have you singing along with it.
The second song is, Baby It's You, from the excellent band Smith. Gayle McCormick's bluesy vocals sound fantastic on this tune, which was also a good song for The Beatles on their American LP called The Early Beatles from 1965 plus it was a huge hit for The Shirelles.
The third song is a very beautiful tune which made it to the top five in November 1969 and will melt your heart being, Smile A Little Smile For Me, by The Flying Machine. Folks;I think I remember a slightly different version of this song by The Flying Machine then what is on this disc. Correct me if I am wrong.
The fourth song is by the great Billy Joe Royal called, Cherry Hill Park. Billy Joe Royal a one or two hit wonder?.....No Way! .The fifth song is Steams immortal, Na Na Hey Hey Kiss Him Goodbye. This gem is an Anthem and reached # one in December 1969 and most all of us have sung it at one time or another. Especially at a ballgame. Bannarama had a hit with this song in the 80s.
The sixth song is, Venus, by The Shocking Blue which was a huge smash for this band. Bananarama also had a smash hit in 1986 with this one.
The seventh song is Vanity Fare's charming, Early In The Morning. Vanity Fare also has a timeless classic on Vol.Two.
The eighth song is by Mark Lindsay being, Arizona. That song was Mark's first solo hit. As several of you already know; Mark also sang lead vocals for Paul Revere And The Raiders.
The ninth song went all the way to # Two in March 1970 being, The Rapper, by The Jaggerz. A fantastic song by a great band from Pittsburgh.
The tenth song is a beautiful romantic ballad that was nominated for an Oscar called, Come Saturday Morning, by The Sandpipers. It was also featured on the Motion Picture The Sterile Cuckoo with Liza Minilli.
The eleventh song is a very nice bubblegummy like tune by The Cuff Links called, Tracy. This Gem was sung by Ron Dante who also sang lead for The Archies.
And last but definitely not least this disc also has the rockin, Mississippi Queen, by Mountain.
These songs hit their peak between June 1969 and July 1970 and this is definitely a five star disc. As an aging Babyboomer I can say that I still love the music and these twelve songs are twelve more reasons why I still do.
Do I have a favorite tune on this Volume One compilation?.....Yes.....All twelve of them! If you like music from this era this Volume is a must.

+ 1/2 stars...Hit and Miss Affair.......2004-01-03

Before the advent of online services like imusic.com, Rhino Records was THE label for re-releasing old material. As a lifelong music junkie (I own every Top 10 song from 1963 to 1975), I bought at least twenty of their Have A Nice Day series. Not every song is a winner, but many of these songs were not--at least at the time--heavily anthologized.

Were all of these big hits? No. But it's nice to hear Vanity Fares first hit, "Early in the Morning" (No. 12), than the overplayed "Hitchin' a Ride." "Mississippi Queen" only made it to No. 21, but the song rocks! "Come Saturday Morning" (from the movie The Sterile Cuckoo w/ Liza Minnelli) didn't fare much better at No. 17, but again it's a song you get on few other collections.

The big hits were No. 1's like "Venus," "Na Na Hey Hey (Kiss Him Goodbye)," and the million-sellers like "The Rapper" and "Arizona." One of the most enduring songs of the bunch is the one-hit-wonder "More Today Than Yesterday" by the Spiral Starecase. [Check the spelling on that one...amazon.com has it right! It is NOT staircase!]

Oldies but Goodies.......2006-11-10

I ordered this CD for one song specifically, "Falling" by Lenny LeBlanc and Pete Carr. All the other songs were a bonus. The memories from my teen years came flooding back as I listened. Those of us who grew up in the 70's had the very best music as the soundtrack for our lives. "Falling" is truly one of the most beautiful songs ever....I cried and cried as I listened, reflecting on times past and loved ones I've lost.

Have A Nice Day: Volume 25 Is A Good Finale For This Series!.......2006-08-15

Now that I finally own all Volumes of this, Have A Nice Day, Series; I wanted to brief you a little bit on the final one of the series which is this Volume 25. I rated it 4 stars because I liked it. I think it is one of the better Volumes.
Several good songs give a strong presence here. Personal favorites are, Lead Me On, Shake It, My Angel Baby, and , Love Takes Time, plus there is also one song on this Volume that I want to brag about and with good reason. I have always been a sucker for Ballads and there have been plenty of good ones over the years.....but two Ballads hit the airwaves in the latter 70s that I consider two of the best ever and one of them is right here being LeBlanc and Carr's, Falling. The other can be found on 1979 Billboard Top Hits called, Just When I Needed You Most, by the late great Randy Vanwarmer....Very Nice!
Speaking for the entire H.A.N.D. series....Volume 18 is the only store bought Volume I own and it was my first.....I purchased the other 24 online (Thanks Guys and/or Gals) and this Volume 25 was one of the first to catch my eye. I also have several other favorite Volumes besides this one. I think Volumes 6 and 23 are the weakest but they are still decent. In otherwords.....it is a good series and well worth having. I have found after all these years that these 300 songs on this series (plus so many other songs from that era) sound even better the second time around and they will never get old! Ya know.....In 1975; The Great Band, Chicago, came out with a very good nostalgic tune called, Old Days, and Peter Cetera pretty much sums it up with the lyrics when he said they.....Take Me Back To A World Gone Away; Memories Seem Like Yesterday.....and he was (and still is) right. Now we can say the same thing not only about that song; but also about the entire 70s H.A.N.D. Series and all the other good music and fun happenings that we had back then.....How Time Flies!

The Best Collection Of 70's Music Out There--Hands Down.......2006-06-21

Instead of giving an individual review of each volume in this series, I decided to give one review on the final volume of the series.

As a child in the 70s I grew up hearing these songs on the radio and the entire series really gave me a feeling of nostalgia. When I started collecting this series, I didn't always know each artist or even each song title, but once I spun the disc, the lyrics to these songs came back from the dark void of my memory. That was half the fun of this whole series. Volume 13 was the one volume in the entire series that I remebered each song. Volumes 12, 13, 14 and 15 are my favorite volumes.

Not each volume is a winner. Volumes 4, and 6 I felt weren't that great of volumes, but each volume contains at least 4-5 great gems. Again, the entire series is great.

This series and Rhino's Didn't It Blow Your Mind series are hands down the best series of 70's music out there. I give both series five stars. If there was one thing that I felt that Rhino missed on these was that they didn't take each series out to five more volumes. The would have given Have A Nice Day 30 volumes and Didn't It Blow Your Mind 25 volumes. Either way, the Have A Nice Day series is my favorite 70s music complilation series and it has gotten lots of use in my CD player.

If you like quirky AM pop from the 70s, then this series is for you. You won't regret it. If your looking for more of the FM style 70s music, then get Time/Lifes Sound of the 70s.

After reading several reviews for the various volumes in this series, it's clear the some people missed the entire point of this series. This entire series was supposed to resemble or be a throw back to those infamous compilation LPs from K-Tel that were everywhere in the 70s. This series wasn't supposed to have great songs. Just memorable ones.

If you are HARD CORE 70's...............2006-01-02

.....this entire collection is for you! This is the only collection where I could find ALL THE SONGS I listened to on AM RADIO! ALL 25 VOLUMES ARE A MUST for your 70's collection! So what - some of the songs aren't Top 10 hits - but they were part of your life if you loved 70's AM Radio! If you bought 45's - If you bought albums - If you listened to the radio - you know these songs! If you want repetitive Top 10 songs, then get another collection. If you truly want the songs of the 70's.... GET ALL 25 VOLUMES of "HAVE A NICE DAY!"

You get too much you get too high..........2004-05-20

Well, several volumes of the Rhino collection aren't perfect, but they all bring us back in their own inimitable way. "Love Is Like Oxygen" has the perfect lyrical "hook" as well as a variety of musical gimmicks. "How Much I Feel" is either totally saccharine or a genuine tearjerker depending on your point of view, but they sure sang it like they felt it. Wow! "Falling", a slowdance harmony classic for the next hundred years, is rightfully included here, too. Gino Vanelli can take his big 'fro elsewhere for all I care, but I'm sure he has his fans (in Montreal and elsewhere). "5705" and "New York Groove" appear to have been included for archival purposes only. Did anyone actually like those songs when they came out? "My Angel Baby", an instant classic, joins the pantheon of 50's-sound "stroll" tunes, and its similarities to Robert John's "Sad Eyes" are obvious (once the Rhino folks call attention to this in their liner notes). "Love Takes Time" and "Shake It" contain a strong sexual subtext, hearkening back to an era where songs couldn't be "explicit" in their lyrics. "Get Used To It", an upbeat one-hit wonder, remains one of the few songs of the rock era using a synthesized harpsichord. Maxine's "Lead Me On" slows the tempo as the CD concludes with the anarchistic, defeatist "Oh Well" ("I can't sing, I ain't pretty, and my legs are thin"). You need this CD. Get it now, so you know what the originals sounded like before Jewel and/or Lenny Kravitz records a re-make!

How tacky are some of these songs? Well, I can remember hearing these songs being played at SEARS while shopping for clothes (no choice in those days. I lived in the suburbs and didn't yet have a car). The direct memories of denim jackets with sequins, and shorty tops - with sequins, fill me with shivers both warm (memories) and cold (fashion hell), as I listen to these songs. But not all of 'em are tacky. There are a couple of juicy goodies that actually broke the ground of riskless AM radio. "You Sexy Thing" was a hot crossover tune that got white people dancing (one could even say it was one of the first preludes to disco), and that title garnished many a sequined shorty top. Even many a pair of ..... (the seventies were SO fabulously sleazy!). And "Eighteen With A Bullet", despite it's slight '50sish Frankie Lymon feel, had a tight euphoric bite to it, which was a fresh charge in let's face it, what was a pretty stale, generic musical wasteland by the mid-seventies. Even Bay City Roller-mania was a delightful change, despite the fact that their fans all looked like Catholic school rejects (I guess that's where they got all that plaid). Come to think of it, maybe sequined shorty tops weren't so bad after all! Have fun -

Oh great songs and great memories when I was only in elementary school and listening to these hits on the old KJR AM in Seattle! Great collections from Rhino!

Gotta Love Rhino!.......2001-08-13

As a fan of Rhino Records for many years I was elated when they started this series years ago. This was the 70s collection with songs that you couldn't find on any other compilation - the quirky ones that you remember hearing on AM radio, had the 45 but wasn't on the "most popular" list. For example: Sky High by Jigsaw (which I remember hearing in 1975) and Convoy by C. W. McCall (which I had the 45 rpm of). This isn't my favorite volume of the series but nonetheless, a volume that should be in your collection.

Please note! The cassette versions are different from the CD release. There are "Bonus Tracks" on the CD that are not found on the cassette.

"For The Good Times" purchase the first three volumes before this one.......2007-07-03

As the author of the Jefferson Airplane book "Take Me To A Circus Tent" and a former radio disc-jockey, I am often asked to write and or discuss various recordings from the 60's and 70's.

The 4th edition of the set doesn't have the firepower of the previous three. The predecessors have more recognizable tunes for the collector of the set. They also ofter better consistency.

This isn't to say there aren't winners here. Mr. Bojangles - (The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band)
is a standout in any compilation. With the strength of the lyrical content and the music, it pleased even those that are not fans of country-flavored tunes.

"One Toke Over The Line" - (Brewer And Shipley) A memorable tune with good vocal presentation and solid production for the airplay it would receive.

"Put Your Hand In The Hand" - (Ocean) Throughout the years people would always recall the song but not the band. Ocean had a hit with the catchy words. The band may have been forgotten but years removed from the release, the song plays on!

If you are first purchasing the series, you'll want to start off with Volumes 1-3 in any order.

A reminder as always the music is the star in this series and not the clock. The total playing times on each CD are short!

Have A Nice Day: Volume 4.......2006-02-16

Several of these H.A.N.D. Volumes have at least one Country/Pop crossover song on them but I believe this Volume 4 tops them all with Lynn Anderson, Ray Price, Sammi Smith, Brewer and Shipley, and The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band all giving strong Country and/or Pop entries here with, Rose Garden, For The Good Times, Help Me Make It Through The Night, One Toke Over The Line, and, Mr.Bojangles, (in that order). All five were very popular but there are also some darn good Pop songs on this Disc too; being Wadsworth Mansion's, Sweet Mary, Christie's, Yellow River, and Mark Lindsay's, Silverbird. Ocean's Gospel flavored, Put Your Hand In The Hand, is another excellant song here. The Bell's, Stay Awhile, was also very popular at the time plus the toned down & soothing version of, Woodstock, by Matthews' Southern Comfort is also a welcome addition to this Disc. Their version of, Woodstock, is much different than the Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young version from their renouned Déjà vu Album but I like both.
Anyone who listened to AM Radio during this 70-71 time period will remember most ( if not all ) of this lineup. I can easily say that this is one of only a few of the Have A Nice Day Volumes that I can listen to from start to finish. Like a previous Vol.4 reviewer said.....This is not the best Volume but it is definately not the worst either. This is a SOLID 4 Star product and a good purchase with lots of high quality Oldies.
Food for thought.....For the longest time I was reluctant about purchasing several of these H.A.N.D. versions because I already own a few of these songs on other compilations however I have found that the duplicates are very minimal for me and I was missing out on some darn good (hard to impossible to find) Oldies on CD. I now own almost half of these Volumes and I am satisfied with all. Gosh! It has been a long time since I heard so many of these tunes and they sound great!

Forgotten Oldies.......2005-07-15

I purchased Vol.4 of the Have A Nice Day series because it contained "Stay Awhile" by the Bells. Although it was a Top Ten song in 1971,I never hear it on the radio anymore. I work for Mix 106 in Charlotte, NC and we do play some of the cuts on this cd including: "Rose Garden", "Mr. Bojangles", "Help Me Make It Through The Night" and "For The Good Times". Those are all good additions to my music collection.

The 1970's seemed to have a large number of "One-Hit Wonders". Although these songs were popular at the time, many don't receive airplay in the 21st century. Thank you Rhino for giving us an oppotunity to obtain some of the Forgotten Oldies of the 70's on cd.

+ 1/2 stars...Satisfying Trip Down Memory Lane.......2004-02-26

Rhino's Have a Nice Day series may not provide an thorough representation of the Seventies (how could any 12-song compilation do that?), but what it does is provide a facet of the decade seldom found on other anthologies.

Three of the songs topped the country charts before peaking on the pop chart: "For the Good Times," "Help Me Make It Through the Night" )both penned by Kris Kristofferson) and "Rose Garden" (written by Joe South). Another song that wouldn't have been out of place on the country charts was the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band's signature song "Mr. Bojangles." [It would also be their lone Top 10 pop hit.]

Folk/pop is also represented on this collection with one-hit wonders Ian Matthews take on "Woodstock" and Brewer and Shipley's "One Toke Over the Line."

Other one-hit wonders include the infectious "Sweet Mary" by Wadsworth Mansion and the gospel-tinged "Put Your Hand in the Hand" by Ocean.

Even the lesser hits ("Silver Bird," "Yellow River," I Ain't Got Time Any More") that peaked in the bottom half of the Top 40 bring back fond memories of the hits of 1970-71, which makes this a satisfying (albeit brief) collection. RECOMMENDED

Pop Goes The Country.......2003-05-21

Through the passage of three decades, most pop music listeners forget that the year 1971 was a fertile period for crossover hits from the country-western genre. This CD brings that fact into sharp focus with the biggest hits in the respective careers of Lynn Anderson ("Rose Garden"), Ray Price ("For The Good Times") and Sammi Smith ("Help Me Make It Through The Night)." Also appearing are three other hits with a rural flavor: "Mr. Bojangles" by the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, "One Toke Over The Line" by Brewer & Shipley and "Woodstock" by Matthews' Southern Comfort. Adding to the eclectic mix are long-forgotten "Yellow River" by Christie and Mark Lindsay's second solo single, "Silver Bird." There's something for every pop fan here. Anyone who remembers the Glass Bottle's radio hit "I Ain't Got Time Anymore" will appreciate that fact. If my ears could breathe, this compilation would be a breath of fresh air.
