Lester Young recorded for the Aladdin label between December 1945 and December 1947, leading a series of small groups that would range in size from quintets to a septet. While Young's solos were a marvelous paradox of the languid and the taut, his approach to putting a group together could be simply casual. His sidemen here come from both the ranks of the justly celebrated and the journeymen, whose names have all but disappeared from jazz history. The bands can include collisions of swing era stalwarts and dedicated boppers. Something of that's apparent in the first Aladdin session, where trombonist Vic Dickenson and pianist Dodo Marmarosa seem to have the blues in different languages on Young's eloquent "D.B. Blues." It seems to have mattered little to Young, who was in many ways a school of one. His playing here is usually at a level that others only dream about, creating a linear flow that has its own superior internal logic, whether the subject at hand is a standard, a blues, or an uptempo variant on "I Got Rhythm." His sound is one of the marvels of jazz, not just for its airy transparency but for its flexibility, the way a line is constantly shaded with gently honking punctuations and a hint of gravel. In addition to the Aladdin sessions, this two-CD set includes a 1942 trio date that's focused on standards and has Nat "King" Cole on piano and Red Callendar on bass. Young's solo on "Indiana" is one of his marvels of multidimensional swing. There's also a 1945 session with singer Helen Humes that has terrific input from trumpeter Snooky Young and altoist Willie Smith as well as Young. --Stuart Broomer

5 out of 5 stars Dark Lester.......2007-03-16

For a number of reasons, Lester Young's sound changed after he left the Basie Band. He changed the mouthpiece on his saxophone, resulting in a darker, lower tone; he suffered from disappointment and depression after leaving behind his buddies in the band for a career that never really took off afterward; his short stint in the army was a disaster; he was drinking and smoking more and more; and maybe he was just getting a little older and somber as well. The result is a collection of fragile, beautiful songs. Many fans don't care as much for this sound as they do for his early recordings, but for me, they are the most touching things he recorded. These are the successful recordings of his "dark" period, which fell apart during the fifties, making a mess of his career. But for this brief period, his genius really shines through.

5 out of 5 stars Certainly a 5-star set........2004-01-28

This is a great set: a good place to begin, and would make a nice gift for almost anyone.

5 out of 5 stars These Foolish Things.......2001-08-09

This collection covers a wide time-span in Lester's recording life and one can see a vast difference from first to last. The "early" (1942) cuts, with Nat King Cole are nimble and swinging on Lester's part - a tribute to his innate time when you consider they were recorded minus drums. "Indiana" and "Tea For Two" are particularly brilliant: very much like his Basie+Billie period recordings a few years before but with a touch of the ethereal. It is a treat to hear Lester stretch for more than a chorus or two. The radical change in Lester came (NOT with the advent of WW11 as some reviewers suggest) AFTER Lester's return from his disastrous army stint in 1945. His timing never quite recovers and he tends to rely on his own cliches. That being said, there are moments of absolute genius and beauty in his 1945-1958 period. Thankfully this record captures his gorgeous 1945 rendition of "These Foolish Things" - certainly one of the great ballad performances in the history of jazz! Every phrase is a song itself. This alone is worth the price of the recording. "D.B. Blues" is also a gem of Lester's swing and beautiful sound.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent small band jazz.......2000-05-13

Unavoidably, Lester Young's recorded output is compared with his pre-WWII recordings. While not in the same class, these recordings are still very good. The main difference may well be in the players supporting Lester Young. Many sidemen are effective rather than exceptional. On the other hand, the spotlite throughout these sessions is on Lester Young. While his playing has changed, as compared to the 1930s, it is hard to argue that the change is for the worse. He has just continued to develop, while remaining a great musician.

5 out of 5 stars Lester at his very best, a must........1999-01-17

After receiving my C.D. Lester Young I could not stop playing it. Lester was past his best when he made these recordings ( or so the experts will tell us) they must have missed these records. The soft tone ,those beautiful bent notes this is a two C.D. set not to be missed. Lester at his very best. Put this on your must buy list.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars favorite Lester Young.......2006-12-12

Always my favorite Lester Young album, with the perfect version of "Indiana" Cole and Trio were still doing Jazz and this point and Lester was the precursor of "Cool". "The Prez" as he was called by Billie Holiday, Lester's style was rebuked by blacks as not being loud and Jazzy enough, Lester was accused of not being "manly" enough, not playing like Coleman Hawkins, etc, but both Cole and Young continued doing their thing. (Later Nat King Cole would be accused of the same thing...). This album, this music was a big influence on Stan Getz in his formative years.

Later, Young would have problem with drugs and alcohol and depression. The shy Young was drafted into the Army in WWII, got caught smoking marijuana and then beaten when it was discovered he was married to a white woman and left in the brig. In the 50's he felt the Cool artists of the fifties copied his style without acknowledgement.

But here he is at his peaceful melodic best: happy and upbeat "Indiana" or soulful, melancholy "Body and Soul", "I Cover The Waterfront".

I have many Lester Young albums, this is the one I listen to most!

Recording quality - transfer quality is good, as good as can be expected for this period.

3 out of 5 stars Mediocre Mendelssohn, mediocre recording........2004-02-07

This is not a bad CD and so this is not a bad review. Lester and Tomes play this music very well, both produce very nice sounds from their instruments, and their musicianship is solid, if not inspiring.

It's hard to get too excited about this batch of repertoire and I can't help that the music contributes to my 3-star rating. Mendelssohn produced lovely music at a moment's notice and certainly his piano/cello works are no exception...and are themselves unexceptional. I write 'piano/cello' because the balance of the instruments is so heavily weighted towards the piano that one is tempted to refer to these pieces as works for piano with cello obliggato. Yes, I know the piano was a much lighter instrument when Mendelssohn was writing this music and the cello was brighter and less rich in sound quality. Stringed instruments these days are strung much tighter with entirely different strings, no matter that Richard Lester plays a cello built before Mendelssohn's day. Even with these considerations, Mendelssohn really should have given the cello, the lyrical, singing instrument of this combination, more to do.

Of the sonatas, the B-flat major is very standard fare and rather unimportant, but the D major is far more interesting and is, by far, the strongest piece of the set. The opening movement begins with a striding theme punctuated with piano arpeggiation and includes a beautiful development that, typically with Mendelssohn, releases its energy gradually down to a whisper in a remote key. The scherzo proper is rather light and throwaway, but the trio is Mendelssohn's warm lyricism at its finest. The slow Adagio is the most interesting formally and texturally. The piano begins with a Bach-like chorale of arpeggios with the left hand crossing the right for the theme. The cello enters in a soulful, almost confessional mood like the sinner in a conversation with the almighty. The movement ends in utter seriousness with the piano restating the cello, but softly with a bowed/pizzicato accompaniament. I have no doubt that this movement inspired Cesar Franck while composing his great "Prelude, Chorale, et Fugue". Unfortunately, Mendelssohn ends the piece with such a potboiler of a finale that the entire piece is robbed of distinction that the first three movements have earned. This isn't a case of my merely not liking the theme or the mood. The movement is simply not worthy of a great composer and was a terrible miscalculation. It's too bad that the thin cello sonata repertoire cannot include what was to be a very worthy addition without some misgivings due to this frilly, silly display.

The charming Song Without Words is a nice encore piece that reminds me of the sentimental songs of Sullivan and the Assai Tranquillo fragment is a piece I didn't know existed.

This leads to my heaviest criticism. The recording quality detracts from this CD considerably. The sound engineers and especially the musicians should have demanded far greater clarity. Mendelssohn's piano writing is perhaps a bit too facile for today's instrument and all through this CD the piano overwhelms the cello. Much of the charm of this music is lost because of this overall "wet" quality and although I have no doubt Tomes is playing every single note in the score, the listener would never know because so many are lost to reverberation and carry. Too much pedal doesn't help, either.

All in all, if you're looking for a CD of Mendelssohn's piano/cello music, this isn't bad, but you might want to hold out for something better. I remember Lynn Harrell made a very good recording of the D major sonata back in the 70s and I don't know if it has ever been released on CD. Then again, you might want to invest in something of higher quality altogether such as Beethoven, Brahms, or...even Boccherini.

5 out of 5 stars Listening to Mendelssohn's piano & cello works: priceless........2001-04-20

Joao Gilberto once sang: "he who doesn't like the samba is either sick in the head or lame in the foot." Similarly, he who doesn't like Felix Mendelssohn is cold in the heart and lacking in soul. Or, perhaps, they haven't heard his music played correctly. There is some strange rumour going around - I think it was started by Wagner - that in order to play Mendelssohn's music, all you need is a light touch and rapid finger work. Susan Tomes and Richard Lester successfully prove how unjust a statement this is. The poetry of Mendelssohn's writing springs forth from their instruments with an unmatched beauty. They are well aware of Mendelssohn's precision, his deep regard for the classical masters; and his ideas are never lost to tastelss rubato or false expression. Susan Tomes always surprises me with her playing. For some reason I just never expect her to be as good as she is. A true musician and virtuoso! And, Richard Lester...well, never before have I heard such a pure, warm tone. His playing is magnificant. In the same way that Mendelssohn's compositions always seem to place a kind hand on your shoulder, Richard Lester's playing fills the spirit with happiness and calm. His interpretation of the "Lied Ohne Worte" is no interpretation at all - it was recorded straight from Mendelssohn's brain I'm sure! And, his cello is over 250 years old!

These five pieces are some of the greatest compositions in existence. I feel as though I've struck gold each time I put the C.D. in the player. But, no matter how precious that metal may be to some, it could never compare with the emotions one receives from Mendelssohn through his compositions (when played by great musicians). Who can put a price on such an experience (which, if the designers of C.D.s are correct, will last forever)?

Short note on technical quality: brilliant, well balanced, sounds good on a variety of speakers.

5 out of 5 stars A Great Collection.......2006-12-13

Not only do you get some exceptional studio material from Lester Young, but you also get a great set of live tracks recorded in Chicago ("Big Eye Blues" is an awesome slow blues). Don't let the large amount of alternate takes fool you. There were many great players, but Pres was one of those select few who could come up with something completely new from one take to the next, and Lester's ability to say so much with so few notes is unsurpassed. Lester can say more with a chorus or two than most sax players could with fifteen. It's not hard to understand why Charlie Parker studied Lester's recordings.

5 out of 5 stars Terrific, but..........2006-10-02

Lester Young is my favorite sax, so my review is highly biased - it's fantastic. The only problem is that the tracks on Disc 1 have a hitch in the order - "Empty Hearted" actually appears in Track #20, not #13, shifting all listed tracks, 14 - 20, by one, to 13 - 19.

5 out of 5 stars They Say You Can Tell How He Was Feeling From How He Sounded.......2006-01-04

recorded in 1944, 1949 and in 1950 this 2 CD set of the Savoy sessions boasts 20 bit sound and is a treat from a giant whose "sweet" swinging style, is often considered ethereal.
There are many Lester Young compilations out there and focusing on these Savoy sides with all the takes features him as a leader of his own group/small band, key soloist as well as dates with his "boss" Count Basie and other great magicians of the day.
Disc ones sides include Johnny Guarnieri All Star Orchestra 1944, and the Earl Warren Orchestra 1944,and Lester Young's Quintet 1944.
Disc two includes Lester Young's Sextet 1949 and Quintet sides live in Chicago 1950.

4 out of 5 stars Great sound, no session info..........2005-11-05

The sound quality (remastered from a previous Disconforme issue?) is wonderful, very rich and full. This release lacks session information (no dates or personnel given), which might disappoint some jazz fans--especially with regard to the two live bonus tracks. Also, perhaps a minor point, the rear tracklisting is somewhat tiny, framed in odd white rectangles over a flower print backgroud. This may be the best-sounding CD package of Billie and Lester's complete prewar masters.

This CD is out of print and looks expensive used. But it's still available for DL. Just look around and you should find it.

5 out of 5 stars The Ol' Road Hawg his own self..........2006-12-21

I wish this CD would again become available. The Statler Brothers sendup of
Lester "Roadhog" Moran and the Cadillac Cowboys is absolutely hilarious, in the
same way that Spike Jones is, or maybe Weird Al Yankovic. I first heard it back
in the '70's when a friend of mine taped it for me at the radio station where
he worked. It reminded me painfully and humorously of the overconfident and
underskilled rock & roll and country bands I had played in around then, each
one of them a musical train wreck in process. You have to be good to play this
badly on purpose (unlike the bands I was in, who did it all by accident).

Iff'n it ever comes available agin, go on down an' git yerself a copy! Tell
'em the Ol' Road Hawg sent ye!

5 out of 5 stars Just Plain Crazy, but Just Plain CLEAN Fun.......2005-07-20

I was 'introduced' to Lester and the Boys quite a few years ago. I will admit it may be 'corny' but you will not regret making them a part of your life. There are so many Roadhog '...isms' you will use forever! Enjoy this and remember, you have to be a very good musician to play very bad music(that, is, on purpose).

5 out of 5 stars Good ole' boys playin' for 'em good ole' boys.......2004-12-15

In the words of ole' Roadhog himself this record is "mighty fine". I heard these guys live when they opened for the Stafford Brothers and Mother Mayball Carter last Winter down to the Johnny Mack Brown Highschool gym and was imeadiately impressed. All I can say is buy as many copies of this country classic as you can get yer hands on before it goes out of print.
Five stars jist aint enough, Thanks boys and keep on a'singin'

5 out of 5 stars Buzz words and phrases.......2003-11-29

Back in the 70s this group became legend among musicians of every genre at the time. We found hundreds of ways to filter lines from these recordings into every day situations and never got tired of listening to this hilarious spoof that took every one of us back to the days of southern local radio shows that our parents listened to religiously in the 50s. Like all satire, it's not that much of a stretch from the reality of what those shows were really like. This is one of those moments in time that just can't and won't be duplicated ever again. A diamond in the rough, indeed.
