The first retooling of any album in the mighty Springsteen catalog is an exemplary labor of love by Columbia. The original 1975 release was the make-or-break record of Bruce's career and arguably still his best collection of material. It is presented here on one disc unsullied by outtakes or inferior versions--just pristine digital remasters of those eight grittily romantic songs of street life that defined the artist's signature styles. The substantial bonuses are two new DVD programs, one featuring a full concert performance by Bruce and the E Street Band on their first date outside the U.S. at London's Hammersmith Odeon in November 1975, and the other a "making of" documentary including band interviews and contemporary concert footage. The whole handsome box truly honors a legendary recording while providing generous value for fans.
The meat of the bonus material is the London show. A mythology has built around it that the band were so disorientated by travel and culture shock and Bruce so enraged by label-generated hype that they gave one of the worst performances of their career. Primitively shot by today's standards, the footage captures the brilliance of the relatively new band's ensemble playing. Highlights include a "Thunder Road" accompanied only by keyboards that opens the show, fiery solos on "Kitty's Back," a dynamic "Saint in the City," and a number of songs that have long since been retired. It's certainly notable how pensive and joyless Springsteen appears when compared to his later, animated stadium persona, but it's also fun to see the far greater role as foil played by Clarence Clemons. As he now testifies in the sleeve notes, putting lie to the myth, on that night they had "gone for broke," and as this writer can bear witness, the British audience exalted the show as the arrival of the greatest live performer of his generation. --Rob Stewart
The Best of Bruce
by guest editor Steve Perry
Steve is the editor-in-chief of City Pages newspaper in Minneapolis, Minnesota.
The Wild, the Innocent, and the E Street Shuffle
(1973)
After a folk-rockish debut album that bubbled with ideas and dense lyrical play, this is where Springsteen began to find his voice as a rocker and as a songwriter. The prisoner-of-love romanticism of "Rosalita" and "Incident on 57th Street" hinted at what was coming, and this early version of the E Street Band--jazzier and more spare than later versions, thanks largely to David Sancious's piano--sounds great, if a little ragged, these many years later.
Born to Run
(1975) and
Darkness on the Edge of Town
(1978)
These two records, which belong on any compilation of the top 100 rock albums of all time, sketched the themes that he would spend his whole career chasing, and defined the expectations fans would bring to his records ever after. The first chords of "Born to Run" sounded like freedom itself the first time I heard them on the radio, and the album lived up to them. "Thunder Road" is still the greatest rock & roll love song anyone's ever written. The record sounded so big and impassioned and propulsive it was easy to miss the dread running underneath it.
Darkness... put the dread front and center. There are more of his best songs here than anywhere else, even if the sound is muddy and leaden at times.
Nebraska
(1982)
After
The River (the best record that didn't make this list) and the ensuing tour answered his rock & roll prayers--he was a big star now, not just a perennial critics' favorite--Springsteen holed up in a rented house on the Jersey shore, where he wrote these songs and sang them into a four-track recorder in his living room. The tape was supposed to be a demo for the band, but after several false tries he concluded that the tape he'd been carrying around in his pocket was the record. Quiet and bleak,
Nebraska nonetheless grabbed you by the collar and made you listen as surely as his rock & roll records ever had.
Tunnel of Love
(1987)
The glare and hubbub surrounding the
Born in the USA tour (the tour was great--the record itself overrated) made him pull back again, this time to write a cycle of songs about love and fear and self-doubt. After this, Springsteen's first marriage broke up, and he started a family with Patti Scialfa, disappearing for the better part of 10 years, notwithstanding the pair of not-bad, just-disappointing albums he released in 1992,
Human Touch and
Lucky Town.
The Ghost of Tom Joad
(1995)
Some call it
Nebraska II, but his second acoustic album was not a repeat of his first--the characters and settings had changed, and their circumstances were more expressly desperate, and social--though it did share the same interest in what happens to people whose isolation or marginal status renders them invisible.
The Rising
(2002)
Everybody, including Springsteen, seemed to think it was a record about 9/11, but the subject was broader--death and loss as seen from more than halfway down life's road. Dave Marsh nailed it: "A middle-aged man confronts death and chooses life" Brendan O'Brien's production sounds great.

Customer Reviews:
If you haven't experienced "Born to Run"..........2007-07-07
For me, it's just unimaginable to know music, and especially rock, without "Born to Run." This is one of the albums that I've grown up on since childhood, until each song has been so eternally emblazoned on my psyche that it brings so many memories. But outside of pure nostalgia, "Born to Run" is one of the premier rock albums ever in my mind. Bruce's third effort and first on a big budget, "Born to Run" captured people in 1975 with its good-time rocking music and lyricism that was all too real. But besides being a landmark triumph from a musical perspective, "Born to Run" accomplishes an amazing task by profiling the lifestyle of middle-class America in the seventies, surely making a grand statement. Bruce's depressing stories of the "losers," the wage-laboring men and women who get their weekend kicks by driving cars, hitting the boardwalk, and struggling through relationships, are inspirational and moving to someone of any economic standing. But outside of the lyrical content, the songwriting is phenomenal. The verses, solos, hooks, instrumentals, are all perfect. This is the album, to me, where the E-Street Band comes out of the background (although you could certainly say the same about The Wild, the Innocent & the E Street Shuffle). Clarence Clemmons' sweet sax riffs, Gary Tallent and Max Weinberg's valuable contributions, and Steve Van Zandt's backup guitar simply add to the perfect product that is "Born to Run." The music is incredibly catchy, and each song in its own is a separate masterpiece. These are the kind of songs that will remain with you forever for numerous reasons, from the lyrics, the hook, the instrumentals, and the arrangement. If you own five music albums...make sure one of them is "Born to Run."
The first song is the rock n' roll classic "Born to Run," where Bruce evokes the spirit of Roy Orbison to create a simply beautiful rock and roll song, undoubtedly one of the greatest ever. And the twangy, piano-heavy rock of the joyful "Tenth Avenue Freeze-Out" makes just another absolutely timeless song. "Night" is an incredible ride through the nightlife of New Jersey, and it showcases the band in the spotlight. "Backstreets" is nothing short of incredible, from it's pumped-up intro with the piano, organ, and guitar to the rallying late-song chorus. The title song is certainly one of rock n' roll's finest, just a perfect song to me. "She's the One" and "Meeting Across the River" are probably the two lesser known songs from this album, but both embrace the musical and emotional spirit of the rest of the album. The final song is possibly my favorite, "Jungleland." Simply an amazing rock song.
If I haven't been able to express it to this point, "Born to Run" is a purely astonishing work of rock n' roll music that can be enjoyed on so many levels. Young listeners just getting into rock and roll might consider making this one of their first purchases. Otherwise, this is simply a must-have piece to any musical collection.
I would recommend the 3-disc remaster only for fans who are already familiar with the album and are further interested. The bonus material includes a "making-of" documentary and a live performance in London. Having seen Bruce live, I can say that the concert footage doesn't do him justice. The spectacle that is a Bruce Springsteen performance is a spectacular experience, and it's impossible to portray on video. Besides, Bruce is very young and appears a little overwhelmed in this footage, and I'm sure there's better available if that's what you're looking for. The packaging is pretty bulky. Old fans will probably enjoy the 30th Anniversary edition, but new fans should stick to the more economical Born to Run package.
The Boss at his Best.......2007-05-29
What can you say but "The Boss" Springstein at his best. I highly recommend this.
Still good after 30+ years on.......2007-05-13
I never would have purchased this set until I heard the live version of "Kitty's Back." Boom... Ordered it that night. Not only was the remastered CD a good trip past the years but the DVD! The band is tight and dressed out except for Springsteen. Made me dust off the Santana, Steely Dan, Van Morrison and Sinatra - believe it or not.
Worth it.......2007-05-07
The remastered album will only sound different from previous CD versions if you have very good headphones or a very good stereo, but the concert DVD (Live at the Hammersmith Odeon London 1975) and the documentary (Wings for Wheels) are worth the price on their own. There's also a booklet of small but sort of grainy pictures, taken from the tour and, possibly, the recording sessions.
The documentary has all sorts of interesting and funny insights into the production of the album, as well as insights into Springsteen himself. The concert DVD has shoddy picture, which is to be expected, but the sound quality and the quality of the performance itself more than make up for it. The picture booklet seems almost perfunctory, an afterthought, but even still, there are some interesting shots in it. And, again, the remastered audio will only sound different if you've got good headphones or speakers to begin with, but if you have that, it's wonderful.
If you're a fan, if you like good documentaries, or if you like a good concert on DVD, get this album. If you just want the songs and you're not an audiophile, just pick up the cheaper, non-30th Anniversary CD (which I don't believe was remastered, but I may be wrong).
Great album and package.......2007-04-29
This is great stuff. The original album needs no introduction every track is a winner - its a 5 star album. From Thunder Road to Jungleland via Backstreets this is one of the great Springsteen albums. Perhaps what make this album standout from other Springsteen albums is its epic scale. This isn't prog-rock though, despite the length of some of the tracks. As I think Springsteen once said, he was trying to capture the drive of the Rolling Stones (at there early 70's peak), with the voice of Roy Orbison, and the production of Phil Spector. An ambitious combination, but the result is worth it.
The documentary DVD is interesting, but you may only watch it once - however documentaries are very subjective and what I found uninteresting you may love.
The concert DVD as other people have said is a bit dark! However, the performances are excellent, the E Street band are on fire, and I found it enthralling to see (or not!) Bruce and the band 30 years ago performing with such passion.
If you haven't already got Born to Run you should buy this, if you have, do what I did and get as a birthday present.

Popular but not hip, basic but not shallow, rooted but not retro, Creedence Clearwater Revival distinguished themselves in the late 1960s and early 1970s through these contradictions. This six-disc set is the definitive Creedence collection, offering superbly remastered versions of all of their studio and live albums and adding a disc's worth of pre-Creedence material. The ultimate blue-collar rock band, John Fogerty and CCR found success by wholly giving in to their fascination with the American South (despite hailing from Northern California) and exploring the turf that connected R&B and country--the same turf that their heroes at Sun studios tilled at rock's birth. As the songs on the first disc prove, they hadn't always taken this approach though perhaps they should have: The first four songs from 1961 (by Tommy Fogerty and the Blue Velvets), original compositions in the classic '50s rock & roll style they loved, hold up better than subsequent Golliwogs tracks that attempt to replicate the British Invasion sound in vogue at the time. Still, the Golliwogs tracks offer hints of John Fogerty's menacing growl and biting guitar that would fully blossom later on.
When diving into CCR's entire body of work, many myths dissipate and a more well-rounded view comes into focus: the quintessential singles band that dominated AM radio was also quite an album band, releasing solid records from top to bottom even though half of the songs were saturating radio long before the LP would hit. Also, they weren't quite as far removed from their Bay Area brethren (who were reared on the same roots music) as is often stated, offering a number of long and loose jams that, while not overtly psychedelic, gave them and their fans a chance to stretch out. Without question, though, CCR were the kings of the three-minute rock single, and it's these now-ubiquitous gems--the consummate AM band now dominates FM radio--that will always define them. --Marc Greilsamer
Customer Reviews:
The Best CCR Collection!.......2007-07-05
I recently purchased this box set and I LOVE it! This is definitely a MUST have for any hard-core Creedence Clearwater Revival fans because it contains all of their material including pre-Creedence music from "Tom Fogerty & The Blue Velvets" and "The Golliwogs."
"Down On The Corner" or rolling on the river this is the mother load!.......2007-06-02
As the author of the Jefferson Airplane book "Take Me To A Circus Tent" I am always asked to write or discuss rock albums/bands from the 60's and 70's.
John Fogerty is a type of genius with a twist. He was able to invent an entire lifestyle about the American South/Southwest/Bayou- before he left Northern California.
There are only a handful of groups that must have a specific singer. CCR was one. Fogerty must take the microphone. Every word convinces you that he was born on the bayou. His guitar licks are tremendous and always fit the structure of the song.
If you heard people tell you that this release didn't have the sound quality they were looking for I would like to give a counter point of view. When CD's were first issued almost all of them lacked punch or a sound you felt to be warm and sincere. So many years after the fact almost all of the plants/record companies have corrected this. The quality is fine for the rock and roll it presents.
You'll love going through all the studio releases and understanding while numerous people thought of Fogerty as a hit writing machine (YES and very well) the CCR album output is terrific in its own right. The non radio songs are very powerful. Fogerty will take you through the swamp, sprinkle some blues, and pay homage to sounds of the 50's and 60's.
If you are going to make an investment in the CCR releases, you'll be proud to own this collection! You'll even get to hear what they sounded like before the ywere CCR!
Be well always,
Craig Fenton
Author of the Jefferson Airplane book "Take Me To A Circus Tent"
The most quintessential and definitive box set of the best short lived band.......2006-05-26
The Creedence Clearwater Revival box set is very much a mammoth enterprise in its own right. Containing all seven original albums and two live albums, not to mention a whole disc full of material from their stints as Tommy Fogerty & The Blue Velvets and The Golliwogs, this is very much a unique offer.
All tracks have been superbly remastered, thus salvaging their legacy for forthcoming generations. Once you possess this set, you need not even browse through the other compilations, since all of it is here, and a little bit more.
The undoubted highlight of the set is the first disc, focusing on the pre-Creedence period. The Blue Velvets singles make their debut appearance here (the most devout Creedence fan may have noticed that the third single is absent, because of its scarcity). The Golliwogs singles made their first appearance on vinyl on the 1975 Pre Creedence compilation, which also included the first single under the name of Creedence Clearwater Revival. To top it all off, there are even extra tracks among the singles that prior to this set never saw the light of day: "I Only Met You Just An Hour Ago", "She Was Mine", "Gonna Hang Around", "Instrumental #1", "Little Tina", and "Try Try Try", which in all sound a lot different compared to the Blue Velvets material, which harked back to '50s style rock'n'roll. Another additional treat is the "abandoned" single "Tell Me"/"You Can't Be True" (second version) that was never released; the disc finishes off with an Action USA radio promotional spot.
The B-side of the first Creedence single "Porterville", "Call It Pretending", opens Disc 2, which, up to Disc 5, focuses on the original Creedence albums until reaching Tracks 3 and 4 on Disc 5. Probably the rarest of gems in the Creedence catalog, "45 Revolutions Per Minute (Parts 1-2)" was originally a promo disc recorded in late 1970 and distributed to radio stations. It is basically a group interview interspersed with added effects (not to mention a very amusing sequence where John Fogerty can be heard speaking backwards!) and musical backdrops to boot. This particular track is as yet not available elsewhere. The remainder of Disc 5 and the sixth (and last) one display Mardi Gras plus the two live albums In Concert and Live In Europe (with additional tracks apparently taken from Live In Germany, which was recorded at the same time period as Live In Europe).
Along with the discs is a full booklet with extensive liner notes and a review for each album, by various writers and chroniclers. The Early Years (by Alec Palao), especially makes for very interesting reading, with additional input from Stu Cook and Doug Clifford discussing the olden days. The only major shame is that John Fogerty did not contribute to the reminiscences. One could assume (given the current situation between him and the others) that he was not very much interested in their early history. Simply by reading the booklet it could easily evoke memories of a bygone era, especially among those who grew up listening to Creedence in the late '60s; without doubt one of the best and most significant bands America could ever boost. Therefore this box set is a milestone on behalf of their enduring legacy which ever continues to inspire and beguile thousands or even millions wherever Creedence is known, played, and loved.
Hats off to CCR!
Love the completeness but disappointed in sound quality........2006-04-01
It's great to have all the CCR studio albums, and some of the more obscure stuff all in one package.
However, I already owned all the CCR studio albums, except Mardi Gras, on CD and was disappointed to find that these "remastered" CDs didn't sound any better than the individual CDs that I bought many years ago (and since gave to a friend). (And, I was listening on a system that is beyond anything you'll find at these consumer electronic superstores. I can hear it whan remastering is done correctly.)
QUESTION?.......2006-03-03
Does the booklet or the liner notes include good session info, such as when, where, who played, etc. on each track?

The title of this bonus-track-rich, 10-disc chronicle of Robert Plant's post-Led Zeppelin career refers not only to the number of solo albums the singer has released since Zep flamed out in 1980, but also his penchant for stubborn endurance and artistic reinvention in the face of time and the tides of fashion. While both Plant and Jimmy Page have never been able to fully escape the lengthy shadows of their original world-beating collaboration, it's the vocalist who's best--if irregularly--tempered, teased, and folded Zep's legacy into his mercurial solo career, with his 1982 debut Pictures at Eleven and 1988's Now & Zen being the most overt about it. More crucial to Plant's restless muse has been a willingness to move beyond Led Zeppelin, whether successfully casting a more structured set of songs in synth-drenched new wave veneer on "Principle of Moments" (supplemented here by the previously unreleased "Turnaround" and three live cuts, including an unlikely cover of Bob Marley's "Lively Up Yourself"), revisiting a wide swath of influential roots on the Honeydrippers EP and his first release with contemporary backing band Strange Sensation on 2002's Dreamland, or the symphonic ambitions of Manic Nirvana and multihued folk retrenchment of Fate of Nations. Enhanced by 26 bonus tracks of outtakes, demos, live cuts, and remixes, the nine albums anthologized here are also covered in an insightful essay by journalist Ed Vulliamy. The set's bonus DVD contains an hour-long retrospective hosted by Plant himself and features rare film clips and comments from many of his collaborators and admirers, as well as 20 career-spanning solo videos. --Jerry McCulley
Album Description
Legendary vocalist Robert Plant's extraordinary post-Led Zeppelin career is celebrated in this inspired 10-disc box set that encompasses his nine solo albums, expanded and remastered, and a bonus DVD with a one-hour documentary!
Customer Reviews:
An Alternative Truth.......2007-06-24
The preceeding reviews are adequate for you to determine if this package is for you or not. There's really not much new to say, but I did want to reiterate one or two things.
The first thing is, the remastering. I did a back to back comparison of "Principle of Moments" last night. This is my favorite Plant work, and was the one I most wanted to hear.
The truth is, it really isn't all that different. Once again, they've simply boosted the volume of the disc. So, you put in the remastered disc and set the volume, ansd then put in the original disc, and you can barely hear anything.
Turn up the volume on the original disc though, and you have pretty much the same sound as the new one. It's got the same clarity, the same detail. Perhaps there are minor differences, slightly tighter bass, a minute bit of detail more, but honestly, it's not anything to get excited about.
So in all honesty, the "remaster" is a bit of a red-herring. It's a shame, because that was the main pull for me.
As for the bonus DVD - the hour documentary is reasonably interesting, although it's far too brief. Plant only talks about songs that have accompanying videos, which means my favorite tracks never get a mention. And with only and hour, he doesn't get to give any real details about the various periods the albums were made in.
As for the 20 something videos - they're all here. The good news is, they're in stereo, DTS 5.1, and Dolby 5.1. Always a nice bonus that.
The bad news is, they videos themselves are all basically unwatchable. That embarassing 80's stuff is cringeworthy to the extreme, and Plant mostly makes a fool of himself.
The packaging is great.
The individual releases have the full liner notes taken from the box set included, so if you simply go for the titles you care about, you don't miss anything.
Still - if you're a Plant fan why not grab this? It's not ASTONISHING - but it's pretty good and complete.
Wish I could give it 3 1/2.......2007-05-05
This was a bargain because I owned only 4 of the 9. Also there's the dvd that's not sold seperately. BUT..... THE reason I bought the set was for the REMASTERING. Unfortunately, the difference is NOMINAL. There are however enough unreleased or unavailable in the U.S. tracks to make up a cd of their own, plus there's lots of good live tracks and at least 1 enjoyable remix. The packaging looks great and is original, but it's also very cumbersome putting a disk back in it's sleeve. The sleeves are bound in book form, but the style of binding keeps the front pages from staying out of the way when you access the rear sleeves. You almost need one hand to hold the top pages back, one to spread the carboard sleeve open so it doesn't scratch the disk, and a third hand to put in/take out the disk. The best thing for me has been discovering everything released after Manic Nirvana. It's possible Mighty Rearranger could become my favorite Plant cd. So....... Pros: Fair price, great music, nice extras, sounds a little better than the original releases, VERY attractive and high quality packaging. (The guy that wrote the booklet was a bit gushing, but nearly all of these retrospectives have the same "feature". I remember after reading the booklet in The Babys anthology, I nearly believed they were the biggest band in the world.) Cons: Only a LITTLE better sounding than the original releases, inconvenient packaging.
Nine Lives really is a Tall Cool One........2007-04-27
Nine Lives is a massive nine CD, one DVD set of Robert Plant's solo career. Granted he's a rock god, but is a boxed set dedicated to Robert Plant's solo career, really necessary? Perhaps not, but that is up to each buyer to decide.
Despite his relatively steady presence on the radio with songs from Led Zeppelin, his solo releases rarely received the kind of treatment afforded like some other high-profile solo artists coming out of big bands. There may be reasons for this, but it's unfortunate, because as Nine Lives makes clear Robert Plant has been more consistent and consistently interesting than either. As tightly as the ghost of his former band has held him, Robert Plant has succeeded in charting an original course.
Not all has aged well, of course, but what's astonishing is just how much of this stuff still holds up. 1982's Pictures at Eleven and 1983's The Principle of Moments are albums very much of their time, but the songs and performances transcend their production enough to overcome this. The years have not been as kind to the Honeydrippers Volume One and 1985's Shaken `N' Stirred, but from 1988's Now and Zen on, he's been on a dissonant, solidly enjoyable tear.
The albums have all been remastered, of course, and bonus tracks added to each, everything sounds great and the remastering is noticed right away. The set also comes with a DVD with 20 of Robert Plant's music videos and an hour long documentary where he talks about his career and each album and why he decided to go solo and what was behind each of his solo albums.
Within the nine CDs, you've got a list of rock radio classics: 29 Palms, Big Log, Burning Down One Side, In the Mood, Little by Little, Pledge Pin, Sea of Love, Shine it All Around, Tall Cool One, Tie Dye on the Highway and more. Along with the 85 old tunes, you've got 25 bonus cuts, live recordings and remixes peppered with a few so-so leftovers and demos.
You've got an eye-catching packaging and a 60-page color book containing more biographical data, plus an album-by-album chronicle. It is exhaustive. And exhausting.
This set is for fans of Robert Plant's solo work and not that of Led Zeppelin as they are very different.
The only question you need to answer is how much Robert Plant do you really need?
Nine Lives 5 Stars.......2007-04-20
This sounds superb and the bonus tracks are largely excellent. The packaging is great and user friendly. The only disappointment is the book which while OK is overly reflective, even for a retrospective such as this. Box sets like everything else come in a variety of types from great to poor, this one is great, get it!
Robert Plant's Swan Song.......2007-03-06
At his best, Plant exemplifies why Zeppelin was so popular. Lyrically and performance-wise, he is quite the showman. That being said, at his worst, Plant is pedestrian. This collection contains some of both. "Now and Zen", and "The Principles of Moments" are incredible, but I just never got "Dreamland". That it includes his latest release is a bonus, and all of the bonus material is a pleasant surprise, given that in most cases, "deleted scenes" deserved to be deleted. If you like what you have heard from Robert in years past, this is the definitive collection to own. I had 4 or 5 of the original CDs, and don't regret spending the extra money to replace them with this collection. The old CD's will make great gifts to introduce my friends to some of Roberts "not so mainstream" stuff.

What more could you ask?.......2007-06-27
Seems to me the songs are all there, not always aligned as in the 'original' (at least U.S. versions), but there's a handy-dandy index such that if ANYONE mentions ANY Beatle song, you c'look it up, find it, and, by God, play it for them.
Again I say unto you, what more could you ask?
Power of the pound.......2007-06-14
I ordered this from right across the atlantic in the UK as with the strong pound, the price of $199.99 represented outstanding value. All the Beatles tracks as per their original mixes and original uk album releases. If you are a beatles fan, a completist and you don't alreay own all the albums on CD I fail to see how this cannot be an outstanding value for money purchase (at the reduced price). I would also reccomend Ian McDonald's book 'Revolution in the Head' if you listen to the beatles music with this book, you will feel like it is the first time you are really 'listening' to the music.
It's the Beatles all together in one place!.......2007-05-03
I didn't buy this set from Amazon. I bought it through a TV shopping channel (which shall remain un-named). At the time I bought it, it had been out for more than a year and if I remember correctly, there was some kind of lawsuit pending and the set was being taken out of print and no one was sure it would be returning. I know I paid less than $200 for it and, despite what some reviewers here will tell you... it was worth every penny. This is (as others have said) all of the Beatles original UK releases along with Past Masters I & II in a wooden roll-top box. The box is not plastic (as has been claimed) and is very sturdy and fairly heavy. Despite rumors of its demise "Hey Jude" is in fact in this set. The recordings seem clear and clean to me and I love the way the whole set is packaged. Why there is so much mis-information on this set I don't know. All that being said, I highly recommend this set for folks (like myself) who are looking for a box set. Sure, you might be able to assemble the individual albums cheaper, and if that makes you happy, please have at it! But that fact can't take away from this wonderful set.
The Best of Rock n Roll.......2007-04-20
Forget SGT Pepper or Revolver and Rubber Soul, they are not the best Beatles albums. This is the best Beatles album. Ha ha, well you know what I'm saying...Everything they did is classic so get all of the CDs (maybe not this set due to high price) and just play them back to back some weekend and you will see the light. Beatles will live on forever and will always be my fall back music when I get sick of the crap that they release these days...RIP John & George.
yeah........2007-03-05
I've been reading some of the customer reviews here. Are you people complete idiots? There's a bunch of people complaining that 'Hey Jude' isn't in the set. It's on 'Past Masters'which is included! Did you even look at the albums you bought, or the track listing? As for the 'Hey Jude' record (1970), it wasn't an album to begin with. Just an incomplete ad hoc compilation of singles, which has no need to exist anymore since the songs are either on Past Masters, or the regular albums. Likewise, the american capitol albums no longer serve any reason or purpose. they deserve their extinction. Sorry America, you got screwed over in the first place. The beatles had nothing to do with those capitol albums, in fact, they detested that Capitol butchered their records that way. They spent painstaking hours sequencing the UK albums, packaging them too, and these represented their artistic vision. The capitol albums are incomplete besides. Here is every single official song the Beatles released in their initial lifespan, as they intended it, b sides and all. Price aside, what more do you want? Oh, yeah, some customers here want the Red and Blue sets. That makes sense doesnt it? Complain about the price, then ask for 4 cds worth of compilation to be thrown in, repeating the songs already on the other cds in the set? Yeah. If your interest in the beatles doesnt exceed compilations why bother with a 300 dollar set in the first place? Everything in this set is amazing of course. It's unfortunate knowing people this stupid share the same interest as me.

Madacy Sucks.......2006-07-28
One star minus one star=zero stars!
Buyer beware. Madacy sells the bottom of the barrel product. Bad remakes (90% of the tracks) and poorly mastered originals (the remainder). Waste of money unless you want new versions of classic records. Just note: even then, they aren't very good.
The worst part of this company and their marketing is they lead you to think you are buying original recordings.
Don't waste your money...
Trashy Re-Make - Beware!!.......2005-01-13
There is not even one original song by the original artist on this CD. Maybe that's the reason it's so inexpensive. It consists of updated versions, admittedly by the original artists, or at least parts of their groups. Frankly, I'm surprised that an organization as reputable as amazon.ca would offer them for sale without a warning to unsuspecting customers. As a person who knows rock'n'rock history, particularly the '50's and '60s, modesty side, I would place more value on the jewel box in which this CD, and others like it, are packaged than the CD's themselves. The only reason I rated it "1" is that the option of "0" isn't available.
Great CD.......2004-01-13
These CD's rock. There is not a reason out there, for you not to own these. If Superman enjoys this music, you will also.
Disappointed.......2000-07-07
I was not expecting this set to be of non-original recordings and was disappointed that it wasn't mentioned in any part of the ad. Some of the tracks are pretty good, but I was expecting originals.
Canadian Sunset.......2000-04-03
Don't buy anything on this label. Ever. Only 2 minor flaws - they are either not the original recording (alternate tracks or rerecordings)or the correct track was mastered from a record fulminating in your Aunt Gertrude's closet for the past 30 years.

NOTE DUPLICATES!!!!.......2007-07-04
What kind of idiot put this collection together?!? SEVERAL songs duplicated from one disc to another! Buy a different collection.
Makes My Heart Ache.......2007-04-16
I grew up in San Francisco, not So Cal, but these songs remind me of not only my adolescent and teen years but my older sisters who is no longer with us. I remember being about 10 years old and her having her red radio under the bed at night and listening to these songs while she was in bed and i danced to them too.
Best Oldies of All Time ! ! Great Music ! !.......2004-02-24
Art Laobe's "60 Killer Oldies" is a 4 CD collection of some of the greatest music of all time.
One of the CD's is entitled, "Memories of El Monte: The roots of L.A.'s Rock and Roll." The first song on that CD is "Memories of El Monte." Here are just a few of the words to that song:
If they only had those dances again,
I'd know where to find you and all my old friends...
Earth angel, earth angel will you be mine at El Monte...
If we could go back to
The days of the past,
I'd show you a love
A love that would last.
O I remember those wonderful
Dances in El Monte.
In El Monte.
I grew up in the San Bernardino area and all my friends used to go to those dances at the American Legion Hall in El Monte during the 1960's. I never did get to go to any of the dances in El Monte, but had always wanted to. I always danced at the National Guard Armory in Riverside, the VFW Hall in Rialto, or the Swing Auditorium in San Bernardino or the Kaiser Dome.
All of the songs on these CDs invoke emotions in me that bring both laughter and tears and they always give me a longing for the "Good O' Days." Now day it seems as though the only way to go to a dance is to go to a bar. Back then, there were dances everywhere. Bar hopping isn't my style, but I miss those old dances including the ones in peoples garages or living rooms.
Art Laboe used to be a DJ on KRLA from Pasadena. KRLA and XPRS were my two favorite radio stations. I don't even know if KRLA even exists any more since I no longer live in the Southern California area.
Anyway, the songs on these CDs remind me of the dances, the radio, my first boy friend, my first love, my marriage, my first child, and my youth. O to be young and in love again!
All of the songs are good and it's difficult to choose a single favorite, but among my many favorites are "Angel Baby," "Daddy's Home," "Dedicated To The One I Love," "Together," "Baby I'm For Real," "Natural High," "10 Commandments of Love," "I'm Your Puppet," "Confessin' A Feeling," "In The Still of The Night, and "Those Oldies But Goodies Remind Me of You." But really, I like all of the songs on this CD collection.
I give this set of CDs five stars plus plus *****++.
Simply the best ! ! !
Had them on Cassette, way back when...need to get the CD's!!.......2001-07-27
Hello....Back about 7 years ago, I got my dream car, a fire red '64 Impala. I bought all of Art's cassette that were available at the time, a must have to go along with my beautiful dream car and cruisin the streets of the Bay Area.
In the course of the last 7 years, they have either gotten worn out or just lost. I love all of these songs and reminds me of listening to my moms old record player, running around and singing songs with my brush as a microphone.
A must-have for any helpless romantic like myself.
Enjoy!!
BEST OLDIES EVER.......2000-04-06
THIS CD WAS THE BEST THAT I EVER BOUGHT. IT REMINDED ME OF ALL THE GOOD TIMES I HAD AND EVEN THE BAD ONES,BUT I STILL LOVED IT. EVERYBODY SHOULD GO OUT AND BUT THIS CD IMMEDIATLY IT IS SUCH A GOOD PRICE FOR QUALITY MUSIC.

Unlike many a box-set retrospective, this 1997 four-CD collection is clearly tailored for Doors aficionados rather than those curious but not overly familiar with the legendary '60s band's career and oeuvre. The first three discs are filled with previously unreleased live tracks and other rarities, such as the band's early demos, which found them slowly building a foundation stemming from each member's clear strengths and influences: Manzarek's classical background, Densmore's jazz, Krieger's rock, and Morrison's blues. Disc 4 features "band favorites" rather than hits, per se, and thus continues the insider tone taken by the compilation. Once you're inside, though, the rewards are many. --Billy Altman

Subconsious Mind-Fushion better known as the culture that is THE DOORS.......2007-03-16
There is a raw fever that exists below of the skin of a man, in the corners of the mind hidden past all sense, its the subconsious. We know this is the legacy of THE DOORS to slip ever so softly ever so violently into the relm seldom found by the dying masses and that is exactly why this box set is perfect, every other box set has that same old shiney packaging and remastered same olds and dont get me wrong that is phenom in itself but for those cats scratching below the surface of a culture that calming; excessive fusion of minds own creative energy and if ever you wished just to pick apart and dive deep inside the cornerstones of the creative world lingering behind the eyes of these four fragile members better known as The Doors then just just listen to these sounds. All the b-side warped out fixings, all the hidden scraps of infinite creation, all the reject gems, and all the raw power of a man facing down a sea of freaks........in other words little monkeys BUY THIS BOX SET!!!
The only thing you'll need from this box is:.......2006-09-17
Live in new york, that's an amazing live-cd! That one gets 5 stars..the rest is just like any of the greatest hits...to answer the previous review,Smokie is a lot worse than the doors on releasing Greatest Hits!! i've seen about 20 greatest hits with smokie and some of them are even 3 discs! Yuck!
Perfect imperfections! A worthy look at The Doors........2005-12-08
Dont let the negative reviews keep you from getting this box set from The Doors. Sure the sound quality does vary but its everything that made the group appealing. The live disc is the BEST DOORS live set regardless of where its from and has great renditions of Celebration of the Lizzard and The End. The third disc has a great overall feel of some of the Doors best songs with superb live cuts like Crystal Ship from The Matrix and a nice cheerful song about death called Someday Soon. The first disc has the infamous Five to One from the notorious Miami performance and great renditions of Queen of the Highway and Who Scared you. Sure this set isnt perfect. Rock is dead sounds nothing more than a disjointed mess of recording space and Mental Floss is Jim's poetic muses at its worst but overall there is much to like about this set. Is it perfect? Nope, its everything that was great and pompous, chilling and dysfuntional. In short this Box Set is The Doors as personal as a fingerprint warts and all for those who wish to hear.
I think you'll dig it. I sure do. Excellent listening!.......2005-12-07
I read these reviews to try and get a better idea of whether or not I'll like something and usually through all the reviews I can gleen the information I'm looking for. It does get a little old listening to people whine for apparently no real reason. They just negative people trying to make you as miserable as they are. They're nit-picky in the face of greatness.
Take for example someone below getting upset that something is listed as live when in fact it's a sound check. Well, it's either studio or it's live. A sound check isn't studio. So, it's live. Period.
I just listened to all 4 discs again and loved the whole set minus the very first song on disc 1, which is the very poor quality version of Five To One. If you make a copy for the car (so if it gets stolen you're not out too much) you'll do well to leave that song off. The rest of the disc flows quite well in my humble opinion. In fact, the whole set is quite amazing.
I have both box sets. And I have a few live albums in addition to that. I also have Legacy - The Absolute Best. I get very tired of reading reviews where people say the greatest hits albums are ONLY for the casual or "new" fan. For me, a box set is TOO MUCH for the car, so I opt to have a nice 2 disc set for most of my favorite bands. 1 disc just isn't enough. Sometimes I start out with 1 disc and that's enough. The way I see it, I like to have a good variety in the car. Not too much, not too little. If I'm at home, I can listen to the albums and the box sets. If I'm in the car I'm usually listening to a best of or compilation that I've created myself from my own albums.
You have two major kinds of box sets: 1. The most popular - What I call a hodgepodge. It has demos, live versions, alternate versions, unreleased versions and original studio or singles. This is a wonderful type of box set to have because usually you get the warts and all. The variety is what makes this type of box set. And The Doors Box Set is just exactly that type of set except that they've seperated it disc by disc. Most box sets of this type do not seperate the material quite the same way this box set does. 2. The other type of box set is exactly what the other Doors box set (7 disc) and that's original studio albums released in a bunch. I like those too. I bought the "other" Doors Box Set the week after I put my original Doors cd's up for sale. All 6 of them sold that week. And the following week I bought that box set.
Both Doors box sets compliment each other. If you're a casual fan I suggest Legacy - The Absolute Best. It's way better than the original Best of the Doors (19 songs on 2 discs) and it has alot more songs. (34 instead of 19) If that's all the doors you need, the remastering is incredible. Really, the remastering is incredible on almost every remastered Doors album or compilation I've heard so far. Most people I've talked to don't have a clear concept or understanding of the difference between first generation cd's and remastered ones. And by all means, if you can't tell the difference and therefore have no reason to upgrade, then I say stay right where you are with your original cd releases. You either know the difference or you don't. And if you don't I see no reason for you to spend money replacing your collection when what you have is way better than the radio in most cases.
Let me just say that the demos were a nice treat. The live tracks were amazing. The obscure stuff and alternate versions were great. And even the original songs are always necessary on a disc of this type. But they're usually all mixed together, not seperated disc by disc. So my only possible complaints on this box set are the first song from disc 1 wasn't necessary at all. And things could've been divided evenly like most of the "hodgepodge" box sets that I have.
Also, I'm not fool enough to believe that any group of live songs are all from one performance unless there's a specific date given for the show and even then it could be the best of the early and later sets. That's just a common thing. Look at The Allman Brothers - Live at The Fillmore East. Hodgepodge! But great! Also, a few edits here and there that sound great on the box don't bother me at all. I'm more interested in what it sounds like.
So again, the sound quality is top notch on this set and this is a nice compliment to your Doors albums just like the SRV box set is a nice compliment to his albums. It's not an either or thing for me. It's a graduation present! I've never had a single disc greatest hits by The Doors because I wanted as much as I could get to begin with. I just liked them that much. And so for a long time The Best of the Doors was my set. Then I got the albums and live albums. And finally both box sets complete my Doors collection. There's always the perfect amount of a band no matter where you are. I went through years of taking WAY TOO MANY cd's with me on a road trip only to listen to 10 of them the whole trip. So I've learned what works well in the car. I can always bring an album (CD) specifically to the car. But usually I just want some of their best stuff for an hour or two. At home I have alot more time for listening to whatever I want.
Excellent Music ; Ugly Price Tag.......2005-07-28
Before I purchased this box set by The Doors, I was aware that it was getting a number of mixed reviews on AMAZON, and rightfully so. This box set captures some essential, creative and sensational unreleased material by The Doors, and ultimately was completely worth my money. However, it is more than likely it won't be worth yours. I picked this up at a used CD store for a fairly generous price of $39.99(Canadian), and upon doing so have discovered some incredible live excerpts, innovative jazzy material, and long epic tracks, exceeding my expectations. Now, on to my real review of this box set, going disc by disc.
The first disc to this collection entitled Without A Safety Net, comes across as the most laid-back, stylistic, jazzy, gorgeous CD of the group. Although misleadingly opening with a fierce, ugly rocking Five To One, featuring Morrison blatantly yelling at his audience viciously, this disc features very soothing, casual songs, with highlights coming from a jazzy version of Queen Of The Highway, a live performance of Black Train Song, a strong rocking "Rock Is Dead", and a great demo version of Moonlight Drive.
Disc #2 would be in my opinion, the best CD in this set, entitled Live In New York and featuring some of the best Doors live material existing. Morrison's voice is in a familiar, pleasant voice as the band begins performing some classic material on their latest album release, Morrison Hotel. The real keepers on here is the epic-ifying 17 minute journey of The Celebration Of The Lizard, the heavy opener Roadhouse Blues, the superp guitar riffs of Gloria, and The End, concluding the disc exceptionally well.
Musically, the 3rd disc comes off as the weakest in this set, but that doesn't mean that it isn't still great. It features some less memorable music, but also contributes some classics including Rock Me, a fabulous live excerpt of The Soft Parade, Break On Through, and a good take of Hello, I Love You.
As many have pointed out, to most buyers the 4th disc will be redundant, because the people who will be interested in this set will be diehard Doors fans. That is most likely the case, however I am very happy that this disc features music that I am not familiar with, as I only own 2 Doors albums outside of this box set, and decided to take a chance with this purchase. Therefore, the music on this disc generally comes across for me as sensational.
Overall, I would only recommend this box set to fans who have an opportunity to either purchase this at a very cheap price(something on $40), or can buy the set without the 4th disc being completely worthless to them. In all honesty, I think the music here is all great, and worth listens for any Doors fan, however each of these CDs should've been released seperately.

Amazon.com's Best of 2001
Though they're recognized as a seminal influence on American rock music (variously fostering the careers of Neil Young, Stephen Stills, CSN&Y, Richie Furay, Poco, and even Loggins & Messina), L.A.'s Buffalo Springfield were perpetually star-crossed by personal squabbles and legal travails during their two-year tenure. Even this extensive four-disc overview was delayed for a decade by disagreements among the Springfield alums. Arranged chronologically, the set offers up a wealth of previously unreleased demos by band mainstays Young, Stills, and Furay, mostly spare acoustic performances (a number of which didn't make the final cut on the band's three albums) that challengingly deconstruct the Springfield's savory blend of folk rock, blues, country, and psychedelia. Young's work is a particular revelation; his songs reveal a wizened, often weary mindset that belies the fact he wasn't yet 21 at the time of the band's inception. Disc 4 is devoted to complete, digitally remastered versions of the band's first two albums (the debut in Young and Stills's original, preferred mono mix), which makes for convenient listening, even if it duplicates much of the previous three discs. There's also a complete absence of live tracks; that's unfortunate, as the band's stage performances have achieved legendary status. Still, this anthology is filled with gratifying surprises, from Young's always revealing work to Stills's roots-conscious craftsmanship (and quirky collaborations like their unreleased Beach Boys-meets-Folkways instrumental "Kahuna Sunset") to Furay's sweet pop tenor. --Jerry McCulley
Customer Reviews:
The most legendary song was left out.......2007-02-16
I'm a rabid Buffalo Springfield fan and have covered their music in a number of bands. I remember listening to Stereo X FM Underground while growing up in SoCal in the 60's and from time to time they would play the 11-minute version of Bluebird. The 9-minute version exists on the 1971 compilation vinyl (I have it), but unfortunately the full 11-minute version wasn't included on this boxed set. I spoke with Stills a few years ago at Summer NAMM in Nashville and he told me the master tape containing the 11-minute version still exists but that he didn't want it on the boxed set because the final jam falls apart. Still for those of us who are major fans of the Buffalo Springfield, this would not have mattered. What we want is special historical music insights and golden moments, and the 11-minute version would have gone a long way to making a so-so boxed set into a far better collector's treasure.
Stampede on the Box Set.......2007-02-04
A great issue this one, and anyway the only way to get some of the "Unrelease Stampede"'s track in an audible way different from the LP.
"Stampede" was never meant to be a release of Buffalo Springfield, but only a collection of jams, demos and outtakes taken in the period beetween theire first and second official LPs. ATCO relesed it first on vynil, placing on front cover a photo that could be used later for "Again" album and giving it a catalog number (33-226).
Anyway, Box Set re-issues some tracks appeared firt on "Stampede", but not all of them, 'cause "Stampede" was just an "arctifact" created by ATCO. Wath follows is a list os songs you can find in Box Set appeared in "Stampede"
1)Neighbour don't worry #1 :Neighbour don't you worry (remix) DISC 1
2)Down to the wire #1 :not on the box set - alternative vocal line up (single voice)

poor collection.......2006-10-17
I've seen this group perform in person. They brought the house down. I brought this box set hoping to get most of the music they did. I was kinda dissappointed in the box set. Why didn't they put in live tracks in the fourth CD. Instead putting the same songs they had in the other CD's? You are better off in buying the single CD's, then spending the sixty dollars or so on this box set. Even though they only had a two year stint they had big influence in the music of that era and even today.
Rare White Buffalo .......2006-03-10
Ok, i'll admit it, i have been a Buffalo Springfield fan since their 1st album came out. I have all their issues on vinal (eh?). What makes the box set cool is the demos and out takes. But if your not an almost rabid fan, buy the three albums.
Huh?!?.......2005-09-01
Two years. Three albums. A four-disc retrospective. It wouldn't seem possible to get a more comprehensive treatment of a band's career than that promised by Buffalo Springfield's unimaginitively titled BOX SET. But in fact the producers of this gorgeously packaged, extensively annotated and beautifully remastered misfire have achieved the impossible by crafting an anthology at once bloated and incomplete.
Far more legendary as the incubator of the careers of Stephen Stills, Neil Young and Richie Furay than for its own output - which included exactly one hit ("For What It's Worth") and a lot of highly influential but woefully underappreciated material besides - Buffalo Springfield could and should have had the mother of all box sets, one containing every note the band ever released as well as plenty of alternates, outtakes and demos. Instead, BOX SET gives us, in the course of its first three discs, all but FOUR of the group's released numbers (these being the original, seven-minute version of Stills' "Bluebird" as well as three tracks from the 1968 LAST TIME AROUND LP). Since none of the CDs runs much over an hour, this is absolutely inexcusable. Alternates and outtakes are fine; but when a band's entire catalogue could easily be fit on three discs, to have a handful of songs left out of a four-CD anthology is just...well, choose your favorite adjective.
Padding things out instead is a wealth of previously unreleased material, including arguably too many solo demos by Young and transitional recordings which document the Springfield's disintegration into its various member's subsequent careers. Much of this is great stuff, though some of it is rather difficult to call Buffalo Springfield.
The crowning irony, however, is disc four, whereon the first two Buffalo Springfield albums are presented in release order - even though every single one of these tracks with the sole exception (no pun intended) of "Mr. Soul" appears somewhere on the first three discs. This blatant bit of price-gouging, absurd enough in itself, is doubly awful in light of the tracks left missing from this "definitive" compilation.
Given that fully half the material on BOX SET consists of rarities, and that all three Springfield albums are easily and cheaply available on CD, this box is clearly aimed at hardcore fans - which is to say, people who want to hear everything. That we don't is, alas, a tragic blight on a potentially (and largely)wonderful collection of music.

"Hard Road" just got a lot easier with a 3 for 1 treasure chest!.......2007-06-28
As the author of the Jefferson Airplane book "Take Me To A Circus Tent" and a former radio disc-jockey, I am often asked to write and or discuss various recordings from the 60's and 70's.
Since this package encompasses the first three releases I am repeating the reviews from the first two recordings and finishing with a review of the third album. Thank you.
It's not uncommon that a rock and roll band has a history that is forgotten about. Many times, it is for the proper reasons. Deep Purple's first incarnation "Mark I" had three terrific records. If they never created another note, they could be proud to have composed such great material.
While to most of the musical universe Deep Purple is "Mark 2" featuring the intense and strong vocals of Ian Gillian and Roger Glover on bass, the prior story begins in 1968. Rod Evans (One of the most underrated singers of the era) and Nick Simper (Bass) may not be household names but were very much a part of the foundation.
"Shades Of" isn't "In Rock." That is not a swipe in the least. It is only a warning to those that are looking for the more metal and improvisational side of the band. What the initial album consists of is terrific material and well-blended rock with Ritchie Blackmore already way ahead of the curve and only to get better.
"And The Address" opens with a tasty riff that you don't forget. It's a solid choice to lay down the landscape of what will follow.
"Hush" is indeed the cover of the Joe South tune. Purple may very well have the definitive version. It is still played on rock radio to this day.
"One More Rainy Day" features a well-crafted sound by Jon Lord on the keyboards. Evans vocal feel is superlative.
"Prelude"/"Happiness"/"I'm So Glad" covers the musical spectrum in a bit over seven minutes. "I'm So Glad" is the timeless tune written by Skip James that was made famous by the incredible Cream version. Purple chooses not to intensify it to that degree but finds a perfect direction using a mid-tempo arrangement and first rate drumming from Ian Paice.
"Mandrake Root" is Purple's first journey into the land of improvisation. As they explore uncharted waters, the band jells well. Jon Lord's keyboards are mixed high giving a memorable performance.
"Help!" needs no introduction. The Beatles classic (Lennon/McCartney) is slowed down to a totally different and unique arrangement. The vocals are heartfelt and the results are pleasant!
"Love Help Me" pays homage to the psychedelic sounds of the 60's Although it may be the least known song on the record it clearly belongs.
"Hey Joe" closes the festivities. There is debate if Billy Roberts wrote the song but never a question how endless versions from Hendrix to Purple will live forever. This rendition isn't full of fire but it packs enough of a punch to get the job done.
Make sure to purchase the remaster with the five bonus tracks because "Shadows" is strong enough to have been included on the original disc.
Enjoy the music and be well,
Craig Fenton
Author of the Jefferson Airplane book "Take Me To A Circus Tent"
As the author of the Jefferson Airplane book "Take Me To A Circus Tent" and a former radio disc-jockey, I am often asked to write and or discuss various recordings from the 60's and 70's.
"The Book of Taliesyn" brought Deep Purple closer to the appearance of the famed and great "Mark II" line-up. Ian Gillan and Roger Glover would raise the bar even higher. Before they become part of the fold, there is the tremendous second album and the self-titled third.
"Listen, Learn, Read On" leads off the second Purple release. Possibly, by design the record starts with the shortest tune and ends with their epic cover of a Motown classic. "Listen, Learn, Read On" Features a terrific and varied vocal by Rod Evans along with a perfect guitar solo by Blackmore. Ritchie already is finding his way and it isn't only the ability to excel with his leads and fills but the perfect tone to coincide with the song.
"Hard Road" also known as "Wring That Neck" is the perfect instrumental. Blackmore is tasty with a timeless riff supported by Ian Paice's drumming and Jon Lord's in your face but not over the top keyboards.
"Kentucky Woman" is a wonderful cover to the Neil Diamond hit. Purple does a well-rounded interpretation and deserves credit for not only pulling off a well-respected interpretation but also being open-minded in their selection of non-group recordings.
"Exposition"/"We Can Work It Out" gives us two for the price of one. Starting with their own composition of high energy- merging into a slower cover of the Beatles legendary song. This is the second Beatles selection ("Help" was recorded on the first LP) they pulled off well.
"The Shield" one of the best efforts from the Purple "Mark I" line-up is also contains a superlative singing job by Rod Evans. The lyrics are intense and the clarity and conviction only further engrave them in your mind.
"Anthem" with a mid-evil keyboard sound and a Blackmore guitar that enhances the dark mood is the most overlooked composition on the record but not any lesser.
"River Deep Mountain High" has been interpreted by performers from all musical avenues. The tune partially written by record producer Phil Spector has been enjoyed not only by Motown fans (Four Tops, Supremes, and Ike & Tina Turner) but also by those having purchased records by the Animals, Harry Nilsson, and Bob Seger. Deep Purple's ten minute journey is the most adventurous of all the renditions. It could have been easily too long if they were anything less. With the Blackmore/Lord combination, it takes on a life of its own. Never is there a passage you call superfluous. A climatic ending to a great production.
Make sure to please get the remastered version with the five bonus tracks lead by "Playground." Between Blackmore's aggression, Lord's perfect keyboard, and some terrific nuances by Ian Paice it is a must listen!
Enjoy the music and be well,
Craig Fenton
Deep Purple's self-titled third release would bring an end to an amazing chapter of the band. Ritchie Blackmore, John Lord, and Ian Paice were looking to move into heavier rock territory as well as explore a mixture of classical music with the combination of an orchestra and Purple on stage (Concerto For Group & Orchestra). Rod Evans (Vocals) and Nick Simper (Bass) would not be part of the most famous of Dee Purple line-ups called "Mark II."
They still had the business at hand, to record one more record with the initial players. Coming off two tremendous efforts "Shades Of" and "Book Of Taliesyn" this wouldn't be the easiest of tasks.
Purple left no doubt from the opening track "Chasing Shadows" that the album would be off to a grandiose start. Between Evan's excellent vocal and the Blackmore guitar this was the perfect tune to begin the eight song journey (Not counting the bonus tracks).
"Blind" pays homage to the psychedelic vocals of years past. These aren't lyrics thrown together to help create rhymes. They are intense.
"Lalena" is the Donovan tune. Purple's interpretation is stellar. Never has the tune sounded so good as it does on the remaster. Jon Lord's keyboards put you in the recording studio.
"Fault Line" is Blackmore's time to shine. Between the excellent choice of notes and the effect on the guitar, it is an adventurous ride.
"The Painter" musically has the listener thinking of an updated "Hush." The lyrics are deeper here and this one deserves to be repeated on the CD player.
"Why Didn't Rosemary" mixes some blues and fifties style rock and roll modernized for the Purple sounds of 69.
"Bird Has Flown" is an exploration to uncharted waters. It is one step closer to the longer improvisational sounds Purple would achieve next year. At almost twelve minutes make sure to hold on for the ride."
"April" the ending and longest track on the album is haunting, brilliant, and Blackmore has passages that are mesmerizing. If his playing peaked here he would still be in the higher echelon of musicians. Each time we thought Ritchie couldn't raise the bar he would shatter it.
Make sure the CD has the five bonus tracks including the single "Emmaretta."
Enjoy the music and be well,
Craig Fenton

Early Purple underrated...and what a bargain!!!.......2007-02-14
What a bargain, for the price of one cd, you'll get Deep Purple's first three albums which all sound great and have a cool booklet included to top it off. You'll get the summer of '68 top 30 debut "Shades Of Deep Purple", the late 68's "Book Of Taliesyn" and '69's "Deep Purple". This is the original version of the band with organist Jon Lord, guitarist Ritchie Blackmore, drummer Ian Paice, singer Rod Evans and bassist Nic Simper. Highly underrated version of this legendary band.
where it all began..........2007-02-08
The year: 1968. The country: England. The Band: Deep Purple. The musicians: Ritchie Blackmore on guitar, Jon Lord on Keyboards (Hammond B3, to be precise), Ian Paice on drums, Nick Simper on bass and Rod Evans on vocals. Nick and Rod who? You might ask. For casual rock fans, these names mean little to nothing, probably little more than a footnote on the archives of RN'R. But for true DP diehards and rock scholars, those names are essential to understand the original equation that brought Deep Purple to life. Indeed, without Evans and Simper, no Mk I, no Mk II (and therefore no In Rock, no Fireball, no Machine Head, etc...well, you get the idea...), Mk III, Mk IV...simply put, no Deep Purple (saga). These 5 men came together thanks to the vision and efforts of businessman and manager Tony Edwards, who was originally working to form a band around drummer's Curtis (hence their original name, Roundabout). Why do I bring this up? Who cares about business history when reviewing a CD? Well understanding is everything, and in this case, understanding the context in which the band was formed and in which it worked will shed additional light over their early musical output: basically the band came together as a business venture first, musical project second. They already had a tour of Scandinavia booked before recording a single piece of music. They already had an American record deal without ever stepping into a recording studio as a band. With that in mind, the band had to come up with a set list for the tour and songs for a record in no time. And come up with songs they did: they worked out some fascinating arrangements of some cover tunes, added a few originals and off they went.
Shades of Deep Purple (***1/2), their first record, became an instant hit in America thanks to the success of first single "Hush" (a cover of a Joe South tune). The record also featured new takes on classics such as "Hey Joe" (made very famous at the time by a certain Jimmy Hendrix), "Help" (The Beatles, receiving high praise from McCartney himself), and "I'm so glad" (also covered by Cream). On the original material front, Shades starts off with the powerful instrumental (how bold is that??? How many bands start their debut album with an instrumental?) "And the address", which can sound a little awkward for newcomers, but is a great track nevertheless; next is the slightly psychedelic "One more rainy day", the potent (and mostly instrumental) "Mandrake root" which would occasionally pop up in the band's set list well into the 70's, and the fast and rollicking "Love help me". Overall: it's pretty darn good, especially for a first album written, arranged and recorded in a mattern of days, but the truth is that I prefer Cream's version of "I'm so glad" and, while I'm not a Beatles fan, I prefer the original "Help".
Conceived in equally frantic circumstances, The Book of Taliesyn (****) nevertheless showed an incredible evolution. Indeed, wanting to capitalize the success of the first album released in the U.S in July '68, their label asked for a NEW album to promote for their tour in...October!!! So once more, the band was shoved into the studio and asked to deliver. Without the luxury of time, the band followed the same format of their first record: covers of Neil Diamond's "Kentucky Woman" (their second hit, not a smash, but a hit nevertheless), the Beatles "We can work it out" and Ike and Tina's "River Deep, Mountain High"; original rockers such as "Listen, Learn Read on", "Wring that neck" (another instrumental), and much more ambitious numbers (featuring string arrangements, among other novelties) "The Shield" and "Anthem". These songs, along with the more sophisticated arrangements of the covers, started to suggest a very personal and very new direction. Their identity wasn't quite defined yet, but they were on to something big. And it is a lot of fun to picture guitarist Ritchie Blackmore playing some of these softer songs with such restraint, coming from the man that would eventually grace us with hard rocking masterpieces such as "Burn", "Highway Star", "Kill the King" and so many others.
Deep Purple (*****), the third album from this inaugural lineup, is without a doubt the strongest of the trilogy of albums from Mk I. Unfortunately, it is also the last: recorded in early 1969 but released after the reshuffle that saw Simper and Evans be replaced by Roger Glover and Ian Gillan respectively, this record very much went virtually unnoticed, both in England/Europe (where the band had so far failed to gain a truly strong following) and America, where its distribution was greatly compromised with the demise of their American record label, Tetragrammatron.
This remastered edition allows us to confirm the fact that the band was now closer than ever before to gaining a true identity of its own: the record was filled with original material and only one cover (of Donovan's "Lalena"...mesmerizing), and it showed a confidence and a power that wasn't quite there with the previous albums: indeed, opener "Chasing Shadows" is a powerful number where the drums and bass really steal the spotlight; "Blind" is a slower number with an amazing work courtesy of Jon Lord; "The Painter" is a truly great number, with Ritchie really pulling all the stops with his playing; "Why didn't Rosemary" forecasts some of the music the band would do on later records; "Bird has flown" is a number where the band shines as a whole, and epic "April" is a true crown jewel, symphonic and intricate, schizophrenic and captivating all at the same time. And Rod Evans gives probably his best performances ever. And the record also showcases, for the first time, the dueling organ/guitar breaks that became a Purple trademark.
All in all, this set is truly awesome: it has been painstakingly remastered for the clearest, loudest sound, and it is a true joy to listen to. There is a lot to like here, and the remastering alone is well worth the price of the set. But as if that wasn't enough, all the CD's have additional songs: BBC sessions, TV appearances, B-sides, and outtakes that make the package even more attractive and that are worth paying for (some of my favorites are "Emmaretta", "Hey Bop-A-Rebop", and "Shadows", "It's all Over", etc).
Sure, these are not the records that turned the band into the rock institution that it eventually became, but rather the stepping stones for that. This set IS NOT for the casual fan, though. And it would be cheaper to get the single disks (released stateside by Spitfire Records) than this package. If you enjoyed "Hush" and "Kentucky Woman", I'd recommend you to get "The Early Years", which is a remastered, single disc "best of" of sorts of this early period of the band, and then dig into this. You can't go wrong with any of these CD's and you're guaranteed to find a lot to like in here. I know I did, and this from a guy who originally didn't even like "Hush"...
A tad bit too eclectic, even for a DP fan........2007-01-11
The sheer volume of work found on these three discs is real testimony to the band's depth and focus on their music. I gave it four stars due in part to the repetitive nature of some of the more obscure pieces. In fairness, this set comes from a period of time (mid-late 60's) when they were developing their style and making their niche in the rock world. Consequently, there is a lot of exploratory work, so if you want to get deeply into the band's roots, this might be a worthwhile buy. Ritchie Blackmore's unique vocals and the guitar work are reason enough to fork over the change.
This is essential early DEEP PURPLE!.......2004-10-25
Prior to Deep Purple recruiting vocalist, Ian Gillan and bassist, Roger Glover, the band recorded these first three albums in 1968 and early 1969. This lineup of the band is more of a hard rock version of the Moody Blues. It's truly an embarrassment that these three albums are unacknowledged, because they're really impressive and really quite good, almost as strong as the "classic" lineup's material. In fact, some fans consider these albums the high water mark of the DP legacy. This box set featuring all three of the Evans/Simper-era albums at a steal of a price.
These are the MASTERED versions of the albums, the reason I say it that way is, I don't believe these were ever "mastered" in the first place. I've heard these albums on CD back in the late eighties and nineties and they sounded like semi-scratchy records. But, with these discs you get crisp and clear sound from the original two inch master tapes, with bonus tracks on each CD! These include outtakes, live recordings and BBC material. No fan of Deep Purple should be without these trinkets. Quite a steal!

Understand from the get-go that label retrospectives are spotty affairs. Rare is the label that's free of stiffs, and Stiff Records' raison d'état was to serve as a refuge for castoffs, including a fair share of flaccid acts. The off-center likes of Nick Lowe (having recently fleed the misbegotten Brinsley Schwarz), Ian Dury, Wreckless Eric, Larry Wallis, and a very young Elvis Costello found a home with Stiff in the '70s. It wasn't a punk label, though it boasted the Damned; it wasn't a ska imprint, though Madness and Desmond Dekker recorded for the company; it wasn't a power-pop or pub-rock haven, though a number of Stiff's leading lights (Dury, Lowe, Costello, Dr. Feelgood, Dave Edmunds) fell into those categories. And it wasn't terribly long-lived. This imaginatively designed four-disc overview definitely loses momentum toward the end, but there's a humble enchantment to an overwhelming percentage of tracks here from label mainstays, the semiacclaimed (Devo, Graham Parker, Lene Lovich, the Pogues), and uncelebrated (Mickey Jupp, Mick Farren, Jona Lewie). -- Steven Stolder
Customer Reviews:
Interesting Historical Time Capsule.......2006-12-06
Look over the list of artists on the CD, the ones you recognize - go out and buy all their CD's. While STIFF was great in the late 1970's as the conveyor of UK/Euro indie music - most of the best artists moved on - what's left is an interesting time capsule of that the last 70's and very early 80's. There is reason Humphrey Ocean & the Hardy Annuals or Mick Farren are forgotten. At the time, they were loud and brash and a nice antidote to the soft rock era of the 1970's but from that emerged Costello, Nick Lowe, and hundreds of artists you can name & remember ... and of course, leaving most of these guys & women behind ... so if you're a completist collector, you'll want these tracks but for listening beyond the names you recognize? Not so much. They are pretty much out-dated minor league stuff and the sound quality is not that great here so for a lot of reasons, you're better buying artist specific CD's or a more accessible collection of pre-new wave tracks that contain the "one-hit" wonder tracks anyway.
If they're dead we'll sign 'em.......2006-07-09
Disc 1 & 2 are the whole reason to buy this, with a few cuts from disc 3 thrown in as a bonus. Probably more economical to have your old 45 RPM versions converted to CD (and keep those goofy quips engraved in each record's blank space next to the label).
Action Packed.......2001-08-01
Stiff is one of those wacky labels that always seemed to sneak by just under the pop radar.
I received this set as a gift a few years ago, and couldn't be happier about it. This collection is so full of unknown bits of whimsy and little-known cuts by more popular artist that it starts to become more of a treasure chest than a "best of."
Ian Drury of "Sex and Drugs and Rock & Roll" fame appears as vocals on several other cuts including "Kitchen at Parties." This collection is full of simmilar fun little nuggets.
So much of the "alternative" music scene that was largely contained by British borders seems to be archived here, and it's fun to tap into it. Americans (such as myself) who always thought that the band Madness was largely a one hit wonder will be surprised by the spastic "Baggy Trousers," a song I enjoyed so much I have purchased several Madness CDs since hearing it.
While Elvis Costello originally got his start on Stiff, he has only one song here - probably a god thing, as we all have a good idea what he sounds like - leaving more room for the lesser known artists of Stiff.
There is a charming wackiness to this collection and to the whole Stiff attitude. This is a great collection for exploring what the Brits were doing while we tollerated Dexy's Midnight Runners.
Oh! Special bonus: There is a fabulous (FABULOUS) cut of Desmond Dekker's "Isrealites" on disc three. This along merits purchasing this set.
Instantly enjoyable........2000-09-05
Strange...I remember trying to search for this boxed set earlier in the year and coming up with nil for my efforts. Then, after accidentally finding it in a New York record store and acquiring it right away, I find it on here. Must be my mind playing tricks on me.
In any case, I'm not old enough to have lived through the era from which these songs sprung, but the appeal of the music easily traverses the generation gap. I haven't even yet explored all of this set and it's already been some of the most fun listening experiences I've had while listening to "older music": Elvis Costello, The Belle Stars, Nick Lowe, Kirsty MacColl...and personal favourite, spunky popster Rachel Sweet. Vivacious and highly entertaining. My only complaint is that the liner notes are somewhat flimsy. Though full of the kind of tongue-in-cheek humour that, apparently, Stiff Records was famous for, the result of the non-journalistic approach is that there's very little real information on the music, the history, the label, and the context, hidden by the cheeky writing and witticisms. I for one would've liked some more detached, professional journalism to inform me of the significance of this music such as in that Amplifier article I had read (which led me to look for this boxed set in the first place). So on the packaging front, much is left to be desired. But the music is uniquely appealing, a world of its own.
best of my life.......2000-04-07
I was in my teens when this kind of music was played on the radio , I lived in ex Yugoslavia and I was reading a lot about the new wave and all those stuff i England. I loved those groups but I never actually had a chance to listen all those recors ( I Lived in ex Yugoslavia for Gud`s sake ) , now I lived in Sweden and have money to buy records but I am not 13 , 14 , 15 years old anymore and the music doesn`t mean EVERYTHING to me. This box remaind me what music can do with your life and how it is to be 17 again . By this one , no metter how old you are , this is history.
