5 out of 5 stars Good One.......2004-08-06

We have been Sons fans for many years and this is a great representation of their versitility.

Their best songs are the ones they write themselves and this has plenty.

Each of the sons has a gorgeous voice (especially Lon) and the songs are well-crafted with each instrument adding a full dimension to their sound.

This is music to lift your spirits and elevate you.
The songs speak of courage, loyalty and values.

From Whence Came The Cowboy and Great American Cowboy deserved the accolades they got.

5 out of 5 stars A Grand Introduction!.......2002-06-05

Although I'd heard a single done by The Sons of the San Joaquin on Cowboy Hymns and Prayers, I was not really acquainted with their music until I picked this up as one of several western recordings. When I listened to it, I was hooked immediately. There has not been a voice like Jack or Joe Hannah's since the days of Vaughn Monroe. Whether the song was the tile number, "Cowboy Rough", "Riding for the Roundup", "Out Where the Cowboys Rope and Ride" or the unforgettable "Great American Cowboy" (a fine finish), I was just swept away with the cowboy country feeling. "Wyoming on my Mind" and "Prairie Girl" made a wonderfully senitmental contrast with pastoral imagery. But my definite favorite was "Colorado Home" being Colorado born myself. If the state of Colorado should adopt an official state ballad, it would be my choice hands down. I can only hope that these boys stay around a lot longer!

5 out of 5 stars A great, great album.......2002-03-08

On a trip out west at a Cowboy show I heard over a recording the
" Sons " for the first time. Being an urban cowboy the harmonies
were striking. Since that time I have bought a number of" Sons "
albums. Not being a C&W fan this album is about as moving as
any album I have ever listened to for its " Soul ". The Sons
seem to capture and separate all that I would imagine it would
be to be a cowboy. There are at least four songs on this album
that I would consider to be absolute classics. It is hard to
imagine that music like this could be any better. In fact next
year it is a family goal to go west and see one of the " Sons "
concerts. This album cuts to the essence of what it means to sing
great harmonies. Truly a remarkable achievement.

5 out of 5 stars From Whence Came the Cowboy.......2000-11-04

"There's a treasure waitin' at the rainbow's end, I'm told. I don't need that rainbow now, I've found the gold." This line from "Is It Because..." is the most romantic line I've ever heard and this is one of the best Western albums ever recorded. Jack Hannah out did himself with "Is It Because..." and "Great American Cowboy." You will find yourself singing them long after you've stopped playing the CD. "Cowboy Rough, Cowboy Tough" is a wonderfully fun tune that will get your toes tappin'. Every song on this album is outstanding and the vocal harmoneys are the BEST! These guys could sing anything and I'm glad they chose western music. Jack Hannah can hold his own with any of the great singers. I love big voices and Jack, Joe and Lon all have big, beautiful voices with soothing qualilties and I love to listen to them sing. This album will keep you coming back for more!

5 out of 5 stars A true Western music treat.......2000-09-19

This album in my opinion will go down as a "classic" in western music. Charley Daniels lyrics of "Wyoming on my Mind" and the Son's presentation of this masterpiece is a truly superb piece of music.

Each cut on this album gives the listener a wonderful idea of what it was and is to be a cowboy.

These guys have absolutely outdone themselves on this album
