An impressive set of original story-songs ... often cinematic in his imagery and spare on instrumentation, he's best at profiling dark characters whose violence bubbles just below the surface. . . .

People
[I]n this debut album by a folk-rocker ... Knight's nasal voice makes him a lot more yarn-spinner than vocal stylist.... [His] tunes ring true--he is after all, an authentic small-town boy--and we can always use another skilled troubadour.

Album Description

In the summer of 1996, inside a sweltering singlewide trailer outside a small Kentucky mining town, an unknown sing/songwriter named Chris Knight recorded an 'unofficial' batch of tracks prior to the release of his major label debut album. Over the next decade, through a combination of leaks, bootlegs and legend, those sessions would become something much more. "People have been talking about these tapes ever since I recorded them," Chris Knight says. "To me, they were rough and stark and I never thought they'd see the light of day." Ten years and four acclaimed albums later, The Trailer Tapes remain a remarkable moment in time, less captured than cornered, a portrait of the artist as a ferociously talented young man. And for the artist The New York Times would soon call 'the last of a dying breed...a hard-nosed iconoclast with an acoustic guitar and a college degree," The Trailer Tapes have now arrived as the long-long missing first chapter of one of the most uncompromising careers in music today.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Simple is Better.......2007-05-26

Intrigued by Chris Knight years ago because of the record company's hoopla to brand him the modern-age Steve Earle. That will get any fan's attention. Luckily, Knight has continued to push his brand of country-folk-rock to the forefront to where fans want everything from him. Including me. Enter 'The Tailer Tapes.' Finally unearthed from the hands of the maestro himself, 'The Trailer Tapes' allows us to get an early understanding behind Chris' initial writings and they stand as a test of his continuing legacy as a true singer-songwriter, keeping him at the forefront of his peers.

4 out of 5 stars unexpected pleasure.......2007-05-13

Based on how and where I heard of Chris Knight, I expected something different. It has really grown on me. While unexpected, I love his style. Very simple, a man, his guitar, and his words. I really like his lyrics and expressions. I like it better every time I listen to it.

5 out of 5 stars Hard Edges But Good Music.......2007-05-02

Usually throwback albums are pretty bad, but here is a rare exception. Several albums into a critically acclaimed career, Chris Knight has decided to give us a look at himself in 1996, before anyone knew who he was. The Trailer Tapes is as bare bones as it gets: a guy, a guitar, a trailer, a tape recorder. The result is a genuine, raw, emotional performance from a talented singer/songwriter that is hungry to be heard.

This album sparkles with unkempt emotion. Its simplicity speaks in direct contrast to the overproduced and massaged music coming out of Nashville today. I'll take raw emotion and brilliant songwriting in a Kentucky trailer over Rascal Flatts anyday. If you are looking for pop-country with a fake smile, go elsewhere. Knight doesn't sing happy music, but no one is asking him to. People turn to music to capture their own emotions, which are often melancholy and pain-ridden. Knight does an admirable job doing this here.

Knight's talent belies his relative obscurity in the Americana scene. It is not an overstatement to say that he is among the best of today's Americana artists, though he has not yet received the acclaim he deserves. Comparisons to Steve Earle are a cop-out -- Knight is a unique character who doesn't squarely fit some cookie-cutter pedigree.

Several of the album's songs are excellent: "My Only Prayer" is a gem about the disillusion of city life (There's no need to reach for stars/When you can't see the sky). "Leaving Souvenirs" ties the life and death of a car to the memory of a long lost love. "House and 90 Acres" is better here than it is on his self-titled album because somehow a song sounds more honest when it is sung by a guy with a guitar in a trailer.

5 out of 5 stars I LOVE what I HEAR.......2007-04-30

This is the Chris Knight I fell for on his debut album. It may be "raw" to some, to me it is sheer genius. His lyrics are so well written and is singing adds depth and feelings the reverbate out of my speakers. There is no way to deny Chris Knight has talent!

3 out of 5 stars Raw Powerful Chris Knight.......2007-04-27

When I first listened to this I did not care for it. It was way to raw for me. If you are an aficionado of Chris Knight definitely buy it for your collection. It definitely gives you a sense of his roots and why he is where he is at today. The more I listen to this the more I like it. Here comes the rain is wonderful song that I can relate to.

Customer Reviews:

2 out of 5 stars Vampire Muzak.......2007-04-01

The music on the series was very effective and enjoyable, but being written in service to the story and visuals makes it a little unsatisfying with the music alone.

4 out of 5 stars Exactly what I expected.......2007-03-26

I wish it had a few more darker songs on the album but what I got is exactly what I expected it to be. I am very satisfied with my purchase.

3 out of 5 stars Music to remember.......2007-03-13

The opening track of the album by Darling Violetta, is absolutely fantastic. Having all the Buffy albums and knowing how thought provoking the music is from that show, I did expect more from the Angel album. But it's still good music and any fan would be happy to say they have it.

4 out of 5 stars Love the show - Love the music.......2007-01-20

It is wonderful music!!! It is as huanting as it was while watching the show!

5 out of 5 stars more please!.......2006-12-05

One of my favorite is season 5 episode 6 "The Cautionary Tale of Numero Cinco " I wish this compilation include the guitar solo section. I am completely opposite to the one of the reviewer. I love the music part only. I find it inspiring. There's some Hans Zimmer style in it. I really dig it...quiet yet powerful. However, it start to become a little too formulated. Too much of the same thing is definitely not a good thing. Ahhh, classic tragic hero stories. I can't resist.

English composer Robert Prizeman has taken a conventional English boy's choir--usually a haven for sweet songs and ecclesiastical renderings--and made them contemporary without selling out any of their intrinsic charm. Their stacked choral voices and lead sopranos, dressed up with electronica rhythms, synthesizers, and strings still sound like they could be coming from the church balcony, even while they exude an Enya-like appeal. While there are adaptations of Gregorian chants and Sibelius hymns, most of the songs are Prizeman originals based on those styles, with texts often drawn from Latin Liturgy. Except for the chilled romanticism of "Stay With Me," and the rhythm driven "Adoramus," whose chorus sounds like a Harry Potter incantation, few of the songs on Free have the anthemic pop appeal of "Salva Me" or "Vespera" from previous albums. Instead, Prizeman has opted for a more serene sound on Free, even with their first video from the disc, the yearning "I Am the Day." Some of it, like Prizeman's setting of a Walter de la Mare poem on "A Song of Enchantment," gets lugubrious. But most of Free floats on gentle soprano breezes, intrinsically innocent, even if the boys might be smoking cigarettes behind the altar. --John Diliberto

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars HEAVENLY.......2007-06-19

This cd is like listening to a heavenly choir. "Free" is an awesome audio experience. It can turn a stressful day into a calm evening.

5 out of 5 stars Sweetest voices ever!.......2007-06-16

I happened across this CD at Borders and was able to listen to it! One of the sweetest and heavenly CDs ever! I bought two: one for myself and one as a gift.

4 out of 5 stars Awesome.......2007-01-04

I never knew that young boys could have such wonderful voices, almost angelic. The music is very relaxing and haunting at times, but that's what makes it a good album to hear to. The harmonies were so beautiful. To all choir fans, this is a must-have album.

5 out of 5 stars Soothing and thought provoking.......2006-02-23

Libera is an amazing group of boys and Robert Prizeman really knows how to put everything together. My favorite songs on "Free" are Voca Me, Stay With Me, Adoramus, I Am the Day and Twilight. Each time I listen to this disc, another song seems to start growing on me. This was my first Libera CD (I have since bought Luminosa, Libera and Visions) and at first I liked the faster more upbeat songs but as time went on I started to really love the softer ones like Do Not Stand at my Grave and Weep (beautifully done by Ben Crawley and Joseph Platt). The soloists are lovely with clear and pure voices, and the chorus just swells with harmonies. This is choir music for people who hate choir music.

5 out of 5 stars Pure Crystal.......2006-02-20

Like Luminosa, this is incredible. I can only compare it to the beautiful, pristine, classical pieces of antiquity, such as Vivaldi's Spring and Bach's many ethereal melodies. It's beautiful.

5 out of 5 stars Real Country.......2007-05-20

If you want to hear some real music, listen to this guy. Nashville pop he ain't.

5 out of 5 stars Chris Knight Reveals in a Few Minutes What I've Tried to Forget for A Lifetime.......2006-04-21

My first thougtht was, this boy is c-o-u-n-t-r-y. Next thought, this boy is a poet. Next thought, this ain't no boy. Chris' delivery is laid back, the content of what he's doing is visceral and disturbing. For anyone who has lived in rural America, especially the south, this artist is for you. You will laugh and cry and remember things you thought you had buried deep inside. Chris Knight's writing has guts and ghost.

5 out of 5 stars My most recent discovery!.......2004-01-27

This CD is an instant Classic. Chris Knight will join John Prine, Todd Snider, Robert Earle Keen, Steve Earle, and Pat Green in my inner circle. His music seems a little too focused on truck drivers and farmers but I loved it just the same. I can't say that his two follow-up CDs affected me in the same way, but this one is one for the ages. "The Hammer Going Down" is my favorite song and I can't wait to hear it live and in person ... encore?

5 out of 5 stars Knight should be a star.......2003-09-02

I love this record. Chris is an excellent songwriter and vocalist. The record has depth and soul. The songs reach out and touch you. At times, reminiscent of Steve Earl (not to shabby), this young country artist crafted a debut record that is far superior to the crap that dominates country radio and whoever the up and coming country artist du jour might be. In a just world, this is a platinum record and everyone knows Chris Knight. Favorite songs are It Ain't Easy Being Me, Framed, The Hammer Going Down and The River's Own.

4 out of 5 stars West Virginian Doesn't Want to be Tim McGraw.......2003-07-16

This album is everything that today's county music is not.

Unfortunately, it is everything that today's country music should be.

Chris Knight's debut is direct, honest, literate, heartfelt and brutal.

He pulls no punches, whether talking about a stubborn man (It Ain't Easy Being Me), a farmer losing his farm (House and 90 Acres), a dying love (Something Changed), a prostitute finding love (Love and a .45) or criminals (William, Framed).

He weaves tales that have no way out and no happy conclusions. They challenge the listener to not be what his characters have become. And unlike other country-pop stars, not only are all the songs his own, they are heart-wrenchingly filled with emotion. Rather than singing universal songs about love, he sings an individual one in "Love and a .45." He sings of a prostitute that is roughed up and road-tested and a cop that loses a love (One day he came home/And she was gone). Each come to the realization that "Love and a .45 are all you need to get through the night/ One will kill you and one will keep you alive." In that common ground, the cop and the prostitute come together.

In a story too risky for a McGraw or a Brooks and Dunn, Chris Knight sings in the vein of Johnny Cash. He is a new breed of outlaw, one that sings about the not-so-happy ending. That is why he may be the most important country musician around, too bad no one knows about him.

It might be tempting to describe Kentucky's Chris Knight as the poor man's Steve Earle (if the original weren't still doing a pretty good job at it). While the hard twang of the guitar and the hardscrabble lyrics recall Earle's early classic albums, Knight continues to establish himself on his fourth release as one of the most powerful (and underrecognized) artists in alternative country. Produced by Gary Nicholson and mixed by Earle's "twangtrust" partner Ray Kennedy, the album pulls no punches, whether rocking the roadhouse at the end of "River Road," venting anger at the developers who are treating Grandpa's land like "Dirt," or detailing a dead-end life in the title track. Yet the redemptive "Saved by Love" and the yearning "Too Close to Home" evoke equally strong emotions that balance the album's darker strains. If "Cry Lonely" isn't a hit for Knight, it deserves to be one for somebody. Knight's eye for detail and command of tone have the compression of great short stories, though Southern Gothic rarely rocks this hard. --Don McLeese

5 out of 5 stars The greatest does it again.......2007-04-22

Once again, he hits it hard. Chris Knight is the epitome of alt-country (real country) music. Somewhere along the way people forgot that country music was suppose to be defiant. Chris Knight does a good job of being true to the roots of counrty and souther rock, insightful, defiant, and truthful

5 out of 5 stars Great Cd.......2007-02-22

One of my favorite cd's. Love the storytelling, the hard rocking songs, and Knight's connection to place.

5 out of 5 stars Authentic.......2007-01-11

If you want REAL COUNTRY MUSIC and not that pop crap that Nashville is putting out , start with this guy.

1 out of 5 stars May Hollar.......2006-11-28

This material is way too dark, too depressing, too maudlin to be taken seriously. Knight wears his victimization on his sleeve and his chip on his shoulder. "Cry Lonely" would more aptly be named, "You Won't Have Me to Kick Around Any More, Then You'll Be Sorry." "Enough Rope" is decidedly anti-woman, and as a woman I resent that. I was told by a male friend that only guys could relate to Chris Knight; I think only whiny, angry guys can relate. Maybe that's why he's not more popular. Having tried to listen to him over and again, I'm pretty sure that I don't want to spend my time being that depressed. Life to is too short and too good to waste it listening to Chris Knight's fatalism. I hope at some point life will be good for Knight.

5 out of 5 stars This guy's the real deal.......2006-11-23

I first heard Chris perform in studio, and I was so moved that I picked up his CD. I wasn't disappointed. It's great stuff. Chris rocks and rolls, and doesn't slow down. This CD is about the working class, no questions asked. I love the mixture of rock guitar, steel guitar, and fiddle. Take the free spirit of Austin's best music, hone the songwriting, add Lloyd Maines' steel guitar, and a rock band pushing it to the limit, then you have the sound on this CD. If Knight keeps collaborating with Texan Gary Nicholson, get back, Jack.

The tale of a mother who poses as her son's estranged father in letters, yet eventually has to enlist a stranger to play the role, director Shona Auerbach's intimate indie became a film festival perennial. Given the movie's tearjerker tendencies, its musical score becomes an even more crucial component of its deft, if relatively non-manipulative dramaturgy. Young composer Alex Heffes more than rises to the occasion, providing a delicate score fueled by spare, elegant piano and emotionally-longing string arrangements. Heffes work here mines the same intimately scaled, soulfully resonant vein as Rachel Portman's Oscar-nominated music for Lasse Hallstrom's Ciderhouse Rules and Chocolat, a skillful musical tack that's openly emotional, yet seldom cloying. The contributions of modern rockers Clarksville (the buoyant "Everyone Will Have Their Day" and more intimate ballad "Reprise") and singer-songwriters Obi and Jesse Harris organically mesh with Heffes' score in a way that's all to rare in an era where pop songs often contribute little more than marketing shuck to film projects. --Jerry McCulley

2 out of 5 stars Uhhh... It's Ok..........2007-05-01

I really loved the movie and especially little Frankie. There where three songs that just stuck in my head for weeks, so I bought the CD... unfortunatly out of the three songs, only one was on the CD... I was alittle dissapointed but overall it is a good CD. I really like Jesse Harris. He is the best on the whole CD.

3 out of 5 stars Key songs are missing.......2007-02-21

After watching "Dear Frankie" on cable several times, I decided to buy it and the soundtrack album. I did not read the detailed list of songs before buying. Although the soundtrack is good for what it is, I was disappointed that the song "Delicate" by Damien Rice was not included. Nor was the song about the "white horse" that was sung twice during the movie, once by Lizzie and once by the club singer. It would have been nice also to have the "Macarena" song which was in the movie.

4 out of 5 stars Nice mix of score and soundtrack.......2007-02-07

This album is nice because it has all the score music along with all the other music played in the movie on one CD. The "Dear Frankie Main Title" is especially nice to have. I bought this CD for my sister for Christmas, but now the whole family wants to listen to it. I would recommend it for anyone that liked the movie!

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful, sensitive, sad and hopeful. .......2007-01-21

I stumbled upon this quiet little movie and feel like I've discovered a wonderful jewel. I was immediately enamored by the soundtrack and worked hard to purchase it right away. The music along with a few dialogue excerpts communicate much of the emotion and power of the movie. There's one song that was, regrettably, not on the soundtrack but I recommend be added to the CD or your collection: Damien Rice, "Delicate" from the "O" album. The music communicates such a sense of loss and longing while maintaining just enough of a glimmer of hope that you end up feeling alright.

It's a wonderful soundtrack and definitely worth the purchase.

5 out of 5 stars Dear Frankie- CD.......2007-01-09

I liked the music in the movie so much that I bought the CD and was not disappointed at all. It's wonderful and I listen to it constantly.

As befits a release on a fledgling indie label, Dualtone's tribute to Johnny Cash celebrates the feistier fringes of the Man in Black's catalog, adding a few mainstream milestones. In what is plainly a labor of love for all concerned, highlights extend from the pop innocence of "Ballad of a Teenage Queen" by Rodney Crowell (formerly married to Johnny's daughter Rosanne) to the folkier strains and husband-and-wife harmonies of "Pack Up Your Sorrows" by Bruce Robison and Kelly Willis to the honky-tonk majesty of "I Still Miss Someone" by pianist Earl Poole Ball. Some of the more familiar touchstones don't fare quite as well, with Billy Burnette turning in a tepid "Ring of Fire" and Dale Watson singing in a lower than comfortable register on "I Walk the Line," though James Intveld rises to the challenge of "Folsom Prison Blues." The house band and the largely acoustic arrangements give the 18-cut album more unity than many such projects, as the collection shows why one of the most influential and commercially successful artists in country's history remains an icon of alt-country as well. --Don McLeese

4 out of 5 stars dressed in black-j.cash tribute.......2007-05-27

not many tribute albums are worth a 2nd listen, not the case here however with the likes of hank III & rev.horton heat you can listen to this one over & over with out hearing a generic pop country artist murder a cash classic, most of the songs here are done quite well, some just stand out more than others,a must have for cash fans!

5 out of 5 stars The best tribute (so far).......2006-05-09

The whole spirit of this CD takes me back to my teenage years in the late '50s, when we listened to Johnny Cash's Sun singles (along with Jerry Lee Lewis and Bill Haley) on the juke box. In addition to the excellent renditions of Cash's music, this collection introduced me to a few excellent singers who had somehow managed to slip by under my radar. In particular, I love Robbie Fulks' version of "Cry, Cry, Cry"--what a fantastic singer/songwriter! Surprisingly, the singer who sounds most like a young Cash (without seeming to imitate him) is the very Reverend Horton Heat on "Get Rhythm." Another is Chuck Mead's "There You Go." Hank III gives his own unique take on "Wreck of the Old '97." Sounding more like his own grandfather, it's certainly not the way Johnny Cash did it, but he nevertheless captures the bare tragedy and heroic spirit of the song. "Pack up Your Sorrows" was a favorite during the '60s, but I barely remember Johnny Cash singing it. The most familiar version was by Richard & Mimi Farina, and Kelly Willis and Bruce Robinson faithfully capture the spirit of their version. The other song that stands out is "Straigh A's in Love" by Eddie Angel. It's often forgotten that Johnny Cash was not primarily a country singer. Beginning with his classic work at Sun Studio, he pretty much invented the rockabilly sound, and it is this spirit that is well represented here. Get this CD and keep it in your car to brighten up those pesky commutes.

4 out of 5 stars Straight A's 4 This Tribute Disc!.......2005-03-26

There is some excellent music on "Dressed In Black: A Tribute to Johnny Cash." Chris Knight is one of those musicians that always sparks my interest; his version of "Flesh & Blood" is such a plaintive laid back reading of this song that it gives an emotional mix of loneliness, hope & desire. It closes the set, but is one of the highlights for me. Eddie Angel's rockabilly "Straight A's In Love" is a naughty little tune that puts a smile on my face each time it comes on the changer. :) Austin songwriter Damon Bramblett's take on "I'm Gonna Sit on the Porch & Pick on My Old Guitar" may not seem polished, but it does exude a warmth that brings me into the music. Chuck Mead from BR5-49 produced this disc and plays on every track. His lead vocals on "There You Go" set your toe tapping, "You're gone again, I should'a known I couldn't win...He's by your side, you're gonna break another heart, you're gonna tell another lie." The Mavericks' Raul Malo sounds a bit like Chris Isaak to me on the slow shuffle of "I Guess Things Happen That Way." Rodney Crowell has been recording a series of great solo sets as well as with the Notorious Cherry Bombs. Here he turns a straightforward reading of "Ballad of a Teenage Queen." Robbie Fulks' "Cry, Cry, Cry" booms with great energy. No one will ever replace Johnny Cash, but these artists do a great job with songs that he previously polished. Enjoy!

5 out of 5 stars A Nice Tribute.......2004-02-24

Hank III's "Wreck of the Old '97" makes this disc worth owning. His daring to break out of the mold that so many other artists have poured this song into, while still respecting the original, is reason enough to add this CD to your collection.

5 out of 5 stars Great Disc with one flaw.......2003-12-18

This disc is awesome! There's no beating Rodney Crowell, Redd Volkaert, and couple others. Now, I'm a Hank Fan also, and love what III does with his grandpa's music, but as for Wreck of the Old 97, he should be locked up. I wouldn't appear on anything rewriting a song that's been done for the past 75 years. Johnny, Hank Snow, all the ones I'd heard stuck very close to Vernon Dalhart's recording from the late '20s. III's almost made this disc a clay pigeon.

Songwriter Chris Knight signed with a "fancy" Nashville label, released an impressive debut disc in 1998, and promptly got dropped. Though it took him three years, Knight has returned. A Pretty Good Guy is no great departure from the debut, as Knight still echoes in sound and style heroes like Steve Earle and John Prine ("Send a Boat" is a dead ringer for the latter). But where the first album was politely produced and played by studio pros, this one is a slugfest, thanks to producer and lead guitarist Dan Baird (Georgia Satellites, Yayhoos). That approach works on the brawling, buzzing "Oil Patch Town," though it overwhelms the careful lyricism of cuts like "Hard Candy." --Anders Smith Lindall

5 out of 5 stars A Pretty Good Guy, A Pretty Great Songwriter!.......2006-06-23

Contrary to another reviewer, I find that this, Chris' second album, appeals even more than the first, only to be bested by the 3rd , "The Jealous Kind". Certainly, all 3 will be eclipsed by his fourth "Enough Rope" that will be released 7/11. The opening song "Becky's Bible" immediately pulls you into Chris' world, a card game turned violent, a man on the run. Followed by "A Pretty Good Guy" a clever telling of a rejected man summing up his good parts. "Send a Boat" told in 3 vignettes, a heart breaking story about loneliness and abandonment. All songs on this CD are exceptionally well written and delivered in a truthful laid back style. "Down The River" and "North Dakota" are 2 of my favorites. This music defies category. Chris touches you in a personal way. My life is not reflected in his stories necessarily, but there's a loneliness deep in the core of his music that effects me deeply. I'll be listening to these songs when I'm 80.

5 out of 5 stars Great CD from a great artist.......2006-01-10

I just began listening to Chris Knight a few weeks ago. I bought one CD and after listening to it, I bought his other two. I'd describe it as good ol' boy country. Highly recommened.

5 out of 5 stars good stuff.......2005-06-19

This is a great Cd. Of course, anything dan baird is involved with is bound to be excellent. Also, anyone who is compared to Steve Earle is bound to be dam good..........

5 out of 5 stars Great follow-up album.......2003-11-04

Chris Knight's CD "A Pretty Good Guy" has a raw, gritty feel to it that echoes strongly of fellow Nashville outcast Steve Earle. Knight's amazing songwriting skills and captivating lyrics don't hint around a subject like other story song singers. He goes right for the jugular of the message he is sending. This is why he is so popular among a fringe group of country music fans. Unlike his first CD, "A Pretty Good Guy" has more passionate and personal lyrics that speak about more than just people' misfortune. They are much more encouraging than previously (except for a couple of songs). Chris Knight would be secured as one of the best songwriters in country music if the industry was not so leary of his take on music. This is a great CD. If you like listening to music with a message, Chris Knight is a singer you should give a chance.

5 out of 5 stars Roots rock at it's best.......2003-09-12

Chris is one of the top roots rock artist of this day. With elements of country, texas folk and his trademark storytelling, he blends it all with swaggering rock riffs that brings him comparisons to Fred Eaglesmith. A brilliant wordsmith; he's rapidly building a strong leagend of fans. Too bad you don't here this stuff on mainstream radio cause this is what music's all about.

Like other masters of the musical narrative--from Steve Earle to Bruce Springsteen (and John Prine to Robert Earl Keen)--Chris Knight somehow compresses a short story's worth of character and detail into each song. On his third album, the native Kentuckian teams with former Georgia Satellite Dan Baird and co-producer Joe Hardy (who has engineered for Earle and ZZ Top) to forge a sound that fuses country twang with rock propulsion. Ultimately, it's the power of the hard-hitting songcraft that distinguishes Knight, with highlights that range from the plainspoken desperation of the title track to through the life-affirming exhilaration of "Banging Away" to the bittersweet exhilaration of "Staying Up All Night Long" and the fatalism of "Devil Behind the Wheel" (with co-writer Matraca Berg on chorus harmony). These are songs of hardscrabble honesty, hard-won wisdom, and unvarnished eloquence, as Knight gives characters who aren't particularly introspective their truest voice. --Don McLeese

5 out of 5 stars What Country Music Should Be.......2007-06-04

Somehow, a modern country music industry in search of its own identity has overlooked Chris Knight. His music tells stories that strike so deep in the listener -- both lyrically and instrumentally -- that it would be impossible to question the honesty of it. Frequently and inappropriately referred to as a poor man's Steve Earle, Knight stands alone in his ability to captivate with tales so sorrowful and intriguing yet perfectly simple and pure. In "The Jealous Kind," Knight relates himself as a protagonist with undeniable shortcomings in the title track, "A Train Not Running," and "Hello Old Man," yet he remains a sympathetic figure throughout, particularly in the bitter "Staying Up All Night Long." To put it simply, Knight's music reminds you of the beauty of rural life's dullness and straighforwardness.

5 out of 5 stars Great Singer/Songwriter.......2007-01-10

This guy is great, I have seen him in Concert and he is even better then.

Studio cuts are really good though.

5 out of 5 stars The BEST songwriter never to be famous!!!.......2006-07-24

If Chris Knight's music was ever played on country radio....Some real music might be heard!!

One of the most underrated talents around. Master story teller with music. Finally....someone worth enough to wear Steve Earle's crown.

"Staying Up All Night" is worth the disc alone! He creates stories so well hidden in song you sometimes forget the music!!

Thank the stars for Chris, Buddy Miller, Greg Trooper, Robert E Keen, Tift Merritt, Alison Moorer and Steve Earle....My cd player would be empty without them.

NO bubble gum country here. Real music for real people!!

5 out of 5 stars one of the best alt country cd's on the market today.......2006-05-24

Chris Knight's new CD, Jealous Kind, sets a new benchmark for songwriters everywhere ... this guys spins a tale that will grab you to the core emotionally ... one of the best recordings since Steve Earle's seminal 1986 recording , Guitar Town ...

dont miss this guy !

5 out of 5 stars Chris Knight's Stories Are My Stories.......2006-01-26

I've only just discovered Chris Knight thru online Alt Country Radio. I've purchased all 3 CD's upon hearing House of 90 Acres and The Jealous kind. His narrative style catches the listener. I literally stopped, sat & listened. His stories take me back to my youth and conjure up memories of being an under-privileged girl in lower Appalachia. Carla Came Home is a mirror tale of my own life experience in the foothills of Mississippi oh so many years ago. House of 90 Acres opend a memory that has errupted a volcano of emotion. Funny how we forget. This is music for your inner most self.
