This was the 2nd of this CD that I have bought from Amazon. It is so great and I have enjoyed it so much that I bought one for my Sister and she loves it also. I had trouble finding this CD anywhere else so thank you Amazon for having it and many more of Ian Tyson's CD's. I really enjoy this artists music.

I recently met Ian Tyson at the NCHA Futurity in Fort Worth. He took the time to sign an autograph for me and visit with me. He is just as great in person as he is on this album as well as all his others. All his song stir an emotion in you. Whether they make you laugh or cry. I have been a cowboy all my life and his songs ring true.

Thought I should clue folks into the fact that this is a CD of "all the good 'uns" - a "best of" compilation. Naturally I could quibble, because I think anything Ian does is really good. (And, unfortunately, really different - I wish other artists had his integrity; I wish other plain folks, walking the talk, had his musicality. We need more songs, more voices like his in our lives.)

If you're wanting to give someone thoughtful a thoughtful gift, something that might challenge their overly civilized sensibilities but not leave their ears twanging, then this is a great introduction to great lyrics and good, memorable music, celebrating really good lives.

Ian Tyson is still a great singer and song writer. After forty years his voice has lost some range--I guess he found no foun-
tain of youth--but his control is great and his writing is at least good as ever. Some of the songs on the CD don't appeal to me much, but its obvious Tyson takes the emotions serious-
ly. Nothing ever seems false.
As a singer, he's become quite matter-of-fact when dealing with subjects which are, for many of his story-telling personae, matters of great personal loss or nostalgia. "Old Double Dia-mond", "MC Horses" and "Fifty Years Ago" are songs with legitimately sad subjects, but Tyson's characters never cry in their beer--at least not while he's singing.
Musically the CD seems like it's from another era--one when sidemen didn't have to show off every chance they got. Don't get me wrong, because there are some real examples of instru- mental prowess--the solo guitar break in "Old Double Diamomd" is absolutely perfect the same way the solo guitar break in the studio version of "Sympathy for the Devil" by the Stones is perfect. Properly, the music supports the songs.
It's funny, but a lot of current country artistes would cer-
tainly benefit from the kind of control Ian Tyson obviously brings to the studio. I'm betting he learned how to do it the old-fashioned way. He probably earned it.

I first heard Ian as part of Ian and Sylvia which my older brother would listen to in the 1960s. I recently picked up this album on a hunch and was so pleased to find I enjoyed it so much. As opposed to 'country music' Tyson's songs are truly about the cowboy life. I can almost feel the big sky and open range as I listen. This is the authentic thing. Highly recommended.

Beautiful and colorful improvs on some Bach favorites, with the piano work of Ira Stein and the sax playing of Dann Zinn being the highlights. The energy and enthusiasm recorded during this session is powerful stuff. Moments of true exhilaration in here. Don't miss this one!

Ira Stein has been a creative and very individual musician since his first releases on Windham Hill. His work on Narada Records further matured his artistic vision and he is now taking a first step with this album, Bach Chorals, to continue his musical expression regardless of what the music industry might find acceptable at the moment. He comes from a musical tradition that many people may not be familiar with but that deserves recognition.The group Oregon (Ralph Towner, Paul McCandless, and others) lay an important foundation for Stein's musical discoveries and his latest explorations into the sacred world of Bach's Chorals shows that he is an artist that deserves to be watched and followed. He is a great musician, a free spirit and a very creative arranger. Keep an eye out for his music in the years to come...

I am Ira Stein's niece, and I have listened to all of his C.D.'s and been to many of his concerts at Yoshi's in Oakland, CA. I think all of his recordings are very good. I really like his new C.D., BACH IMPROVISATIONS. I am 11 years old, and I have enjoyed his music all my life. He plays for me when I visit him in Oakland from my home of 2 years in Portland, OR. He has been playing piano for over 25 years. He is really an example that if you love something and try hard at it, you will succeed.

I had the privilege to be present at Yoshi's the night this album was recorded. Everyone there was held spellbound by this music--which is classic and yet modern. Each piece begins with the Bach chorale statement and then these excellent musicians take the melodies present in every level of Bach and make concert jazz. My favorite is number four on the album "Hilf, Herr Jesu, lass gelingen," but the listener cannot go wrong with any of the nine numbers. The instrument combination of piano, cello and soprano saxophone is unusual to me, and I think it would surprise Bach also; but I also believe this is an exceptional way to get an appreciation of the beauty of the classical line while enjoying the modern presentation. The music is decorous and sensual at the same time--a most intriguing mix.

Last October (1998), when Ira and his group made this live CD at Yoshi's in Oakland, I was unfortunately hospitalized for emergency surgery, so I was unable to attend the concert. When the CD came out, my wife and I bought it, and I was entranced. Then, in March 1999, I was able to hear the group play some of the pieces at Borders in Emeryville. Absolutely top notch, even though Ira had to play a keyboard, and was on his feet the whole time.

These three first class musicians were all educated classically and in this album they not only return to their roots, but also expand the classical Chorales of Bach into what they have called "chamber jazz". Yes, it's jazz, but it's also got a bit of the "new age" about it.

Typically they play through a chorale pretty straight, and then the variations begin. Ira's piano craftsmanship is impeccable, and amazing. I hear Ira play two or three times a week (he's pianist at our church) and I never cease to be amazed at the skill and feeling that he brings to his playing. He improvises better than any pianist I have ever heard. Dann's saxophone is incredible--he is quite possibly the most accomplished saxophonist I have ever heard. Kenny G, eat your heart out. And Joe--he and his cello make love sounds together; it is as if they have become one, and are drawing sounds from the mind of God himself.

You will not believe this CD until you have heard it. I will give you a couple of caveats--I am not a professional musician myself, and I have a conflict of interest in that I know all three artists, and work closely with two of them day in and day out. But let me tell you this: Bach would approve of what they have done with his music. If you love Bach, and love jazz, you must have this CD.

As a young singer I participated in most of these recordings, so it's a bit hard to be objective. The most successful segments are those on the "Lessons and Carols" disc, recorded in May of 1981. John Walker's organ accompaniments are subtle and beautifully voiced; as a result the choral singing they accompany is consistent, beautifully blended and in tune. The readings, particularly the reading and prayer from William Sloane Coffin, are wonderful to hear again.

The rest, recorded in 1978 and 1979, are much less successful. There is much oversinging, even screaming, in the louder choral passages, the choral sound in general is "woofy", not very in tune and unblended, in the fashion of much choral singing of the time, and the organ playing of Swann and McDonald as accompaniment is consistently too loud, even ugly in tone. The only articulate and beautiful playing on these earlier recordings is that of the late organist and harpsichordist Jerry Brainard, and he participates in only two selections! These recordings were made with three microphones, a stereo pair at the front and one at the back for ambience, in the dry acoustic Riverside had at the time (it has since been "corrected" to a soupy overreverberance), so microphoning was not the problem. This is a good represntation of the way this sounded at the time, according to listeners in the congregation.

Also, as was true of the original LP releases, the stereo image on the earlier recordings is reversed: left is right and right is left. I'm surprised that this error was not caught and corrected in the digital transfer. Much of the analog tape noise has been eliminated, but there is still quite a bit of audio distortion in the louder portions. On my copy, the CD's had some trackinig difficulties, even on a new player.

      It somehow wouldn't be Christmas without hearing the carols and songs of the season played in all their glory on the instruments of the brass family. This album, Christmas in the Morning-A Celebration in Brass, is a wonderful compilation garnered from earlier recordings by the Canadian Brass, The Philip Jones Brass Ensemble and the Michael Laird Brass Ensemble. The Canadian Brass tracks are innovative arrangements played as only the Canadian Brass can. Their musicianship and showmanship are second to none. The Philip Jones tracks are from a now out of print album,Christmas Brass,released in 1982. Of particular interest on the original(which I have on vinyl)are four arrangements of carols by John Rutter. Three of those: O Come, All Ye Faithful, Wassail Song and We Wish You A Merry Christmas are included on the current CD. The arrangement of We Wish you A Merry Christmas is one of my favorites and is played with great enthusiasm.
      I gave this album four stars, because the two tracks by Michael Laird Brass Ensemble are flat and uninspired, compared to the rest of the album. The only other flaw in an otherwise great album was inserting the Dance of the Sugar-Plum Fairy(Nutcracker) between two pieces from Bach's Christmas Oratorio and the advent hymn, O Come, O Come Emanuel. Tacky! Sugar Plum would have been better inserted next to Twelve Days of Christmas.
