Prime Cuts: Too Far Gone, A New Pair of Shoes, Hot Doggin'

All her cylinders are out with the release of "Too Far Gone:" Produced by Alan Jackson's helmsman Keith Stegall together with Bill Chambers; Endorsed by the magisterial Sir Elton John; Featured backing vocals by superstar Kenny Chesney; and honored by an ace-list of songwriters including Paul Overstreet, Dean Dillon, Guy Clark and Bruce Robison, "Too Far Gone" pulls no stops as far as the glitz and glamour are concerned. This comes as no surprised as this is this Australian first major release of which Britt has had already spent two years honing. With a mellifluous set of pipes imbued with an inert verve which can be aggressive as well as tender when she so chooses. But what truly sets "Too Far Gone" apart is the presence of Keith Stegall and Bill Chambers' deft touches. These production maestros have kept the backings rustic awash with plenty of steel and fiddles without giving in to the perennial temptation to turn this disc into a noisy rock crossover. Kudos are also in order to Stegall and Chambers for exposing Britt to variety of country genres including a bluesy romp, a bluegrassy number, a rousing barnburner, barroom weepers, a Texas swing and some modern country, making this CD a joy to listen all the way through.

Giving Bob Willis a run for his money, Britt gives her no-good philandering paramour a spiteful showdown on the swinging "Hot Doggin'" accentuated by a supporting chorus courtesy of Kenny Chesney and John Ryles. Still within the warren of heartbreak is the Dean Dillon/Jim McBride country barroom weeper "A New Pair of Shoes," which finds a frustrated Britt unable to walk out of a decaying relationship. Though already tanked maladroitly as far as the Billboard chart is concerned, the fiddle-led single "The Upside of Being Down" tries to be optimistic at the throes of a breakup with the protagonist taking comfort that now without her partner, she does not have to worry about fishing gear, muddy boots, sharing her closet space, and so forth. Co-written by Britt and Paul Overstreet, the title track, a lazy waltz of regrets accompanied with some mournful fiddle incursions from Stuart Duncan, is sold on the strong on Britt's plaintive and yet beautifully nuanced vocals.

Britt's palette does include issues outside the gashes of the heart. The bluesy Delbert McClinton-like "Poor Man's Pride," the new single, is an erudite moral tale of choosing the heart over lucre. While on the rousing barnburner "Swinging Doors" (also recently recorded by newcomer Joey Daniels), our Aussie chanteuse is no longer a damsel bemusing about her love gone wrong. Rather, she is a take-charged woman refusing to stoop to her libidinous man. Despite being a strong debut the bluegrassy take of Steve Wariner's "Life's Highway" as well as "I'm Gone" and "I'm Nobody's Fool" are acceptable numbers without being tinctured with anything hypnotically enticing.

Despite these shortcomings, "Too Far Gone" is still a sturdy effort. And irregardless of all the conspicuous endorsements, the lodestar of this CD still resides in the well chosen songs as well as Britt's thoughtful and often heartfelt delivery. Already a star in her Aussie homeland, let's hope the rest of the world will embrace her before she's too far gone.

5 out of 5 stars Champagne Music!.......2006-07-09

Thank goodness that these well filled CDs of selections from three of Offenbach's most entertaining and tuneful operettas are available. Exactly the thing to provide some hearty nourishment for Winter nights. Ideal also for a Summer barbecue. In both cases, a glass of champagne, or at least some other bubbly beverage, would be good to have at hand - everything here no doubt will call for a toast or several.

It is so nice to be able to hear in these translations the witty words, sung with welcome clarity and meaning by these admirable artists. As I recall, there were no microphones in sight, and perhaps not even used, when this production of Orpheus In The Underworld was brought to Australia, with a few cast changes but the same sparkle as shown here. Crisp diction and lively, often lovely, singing - a great recipe for enjoyable listening indeed.

The recording sounds a bit shrill here and there, but what a churlish quibble; to Hades with such curmudgeonly qualifications! This is music to raise the spirits, and not just those from Hades.

5 out of 5 stars AWESOME!!!!.......2005-08-18

Yovee is simply what is missing from your C.D Collection - It is what songwriting should be and American singer/song-writing is missing in some bands today: Good lyrics, good transitions and something that sticks to you long after you hear it-You'll be singing it for days. It gets you in the gut. I recommend it to anyone who likes music period.

4 out of 5 stars This is for a music fan........2005-08-03

Yovee: wonderful name, I don't know what it means and I don't care. The music is mellow and dramatic and the writing is creative. It's remarkable that I first heard that their track Dreamer on the Run was featured on a Blink-182/Kut U Up tour TV special or something. It was quite appropriate considering the title of the song for Kut U Up was cutting it up big on the tour apparently. It's down to earth, heartfelt, artistic and just downright enjoyable - I don't think emo, indie, punk, and all-around rock fans will be disappointed at all.

    3 out of 5 stars I Do I Do I Do.......2004-08-21

To call The Hard-Ons sound Pop-Punk is to do a disservice to the band. Their sound is both Poppy and Punk, but it is not what is generally considered Pop-Punk. It is hard to know where to put The Hard-Ons.

The Hard-Ons are Pop in that they have a keen ear for melody. However, the melodies are sparse enough to remain Punk, the same way All/The Descendents do it. Except they don't sound like All or The Descendents. `Too Far Gone' has a nasty little violent streak, hidden just below the surface, like broken bottles on the beach, just waiting to cut the unsuspecting. There is also an unexpected diversity in sound too. It all makes sense when you hear it.

The album kicks off with the raucous rock of "Crazy Crazy Eyes". It quickly becomes apparent that while on the surface things seem happy, there is a degree of despondency to the songs, which might appeal to the modern day Emo crowd.

Blackie is a highly versatile guitarist. One moment, he throws out big sloppy guitar riffs, the next incredibly tight, almost Metal sounding guitar solos, particularly on the album's single "Test". "I Do, I Do, I Do" is a throwaway bubblegum Punk love song, dripping a sickly sweet vocal melody and addictive chorus. It is something like what a confused teenager might sing to a girl "I don't know why I love you/But I do, I do, I do".

"The Blade" is a highlight of the album, co-written and sung by Jerry A of Poison Idea. It's far and away the hardest song on offer, and unsurprisingly will sound familiar to fans of that band. The song doesn't seem too far out of place, an indication of the influence of Poison Idea on these guys. "Stressed Out" takes a repetitive riff, spinning it over and over like a scratched record, while throwing up a cut-up of movie and news samples over it.

If your idea of Pop-Punk is Green Day or Good Charlotte, forget The Hard-Ons. `Too Far Gone" isn't that kind of Pop. Similarly, if The Exploited or Discharge means Punk to you, this will be too soft. The Hard-Ons are simply The Hard-Ons.
