5 out of 5 stars MUST HAVE!.......2004-09-07

I after listening to Country music for 13 years have listened to different styles, and heard artists from different decades. DAC is one of those (IMHO) made a mark, as a singer/songwriter and a performer.

Do yourself a favour get this Double album in 1. I truly feel that all the songs in the CD are made with perfection.
And I will also say that this probably David's best CD.

Bear Family did a great job. I only hope that they release all the albums DAC ever made.

5 out of 5 stars The beginnings of an interesting career.......2003-08-03

David got a recording contract partly because of his success as a songwriter. In particular, Tanya Tucker topped the country charts with Would you lay with me in a field of stone. David recorded his own version of the song on Mysterious rhinestone cowboy, his first album. He later re-recorded it for Human emotions, available on a different twofer that I've already reviewed - the version on that album features Barbara Fairchild.

He wrote many of his own songs but did not rely entirely on his own material. Indeed, the song David is best remembered for (You never even called me by my name) was actually written by Steve Goodman. It may have been just another sad country song, but when Steve Goodman suggested to David that it was the perfect country song, David pointed out that it wasn't because several country themes were missing. Steve wrote an extra verse to make it perfect, after which David recorded it, including some narrative as well as the extra verse.

Apart from that song, you can find covers here including Desperados waiting for a train (Guy Clark), The 33rd of August (Mickey Newbury) and the children's song The old grey goose is dead.

These two excellent albums got David's career off to a great start. This is the first of a series of twofers released by Bear Family.
