No Sweat.......2006-01-29
Possibly the best non David Clayton-Thomas record by BS&T. The band remade themselves after Clayton-Thomas left, and on this record they realized their potential. Fans old and new will recognize it as BS&T, but the rock is harder edged and the jazz is more contemporary with less homage to the big band era and more of a reference to funk. Georg Wadenius (guitar}, "Blue" Lou Marini (woodwinds], and Larry Willis (keyboards) are outstanding and worth the price of the CD.
An underrated marvel of a treasure.... finally released!!!.......2005-09-07
This is one of the most underrated albums in the history of Blood, Sweat & Tears. Finally it was released and I was ecstatic.
Jerry Fisher never got his due. With a voice as powerful as Clayton-Thomas and with as profound a blues influence, Fisher delivers on all the vocal cuts on this recording. Without stance or affectation Fisher delivers the goods.
The personnel in this version of the group is exceptional. Here we have Dave Bargeron, Larry Willis, Georg Wadenius, Tom Malone, Lou Marini, Bobby Colomby, Big Jim Fielder, Jerry Fisher and Lew Soloff. This particular unit melds their varying styles and influences more seamlessly than previous versions of the group.
Georg Wadenius is a remarkable with his unique style on guitar, musical sense and discretion. His vocals and playing definitely helped change the sound of the group toward something new. Years before George Benson, Georg melded vocals with guitar much more elegantly and fluently than Mr. Benson. With Georg it was more the voice as instrument in harmony with his guitar than voice over guitar. Georg can play so many different styles and has a remarkable economy when the piece calls for it. Definitely the best guitarist the band has ever had.
Larry Willis is another one who helped change the sound and tone of things with his modern electric keyboard approach that conjures Herbie Hancock sensibilities (they are both very close in age with similar influences). A strong arranger and marvelous soloist. He can really accompany a soloist well.
Lou Marini Jr. is stronger here than he was in New Blood, playiing tenor and soprano. He shines throughout. Tom Malone is every bit the equal of Lew Soloff on this recording. As powerful and perfect counterpart to Lew who is simply Lew Soloff on this. Those of you who are fans of the group know what I mean. Those of you, who are not, well Lew is a cat who can play anything and can solo with fire and virtuosity.
The choice of songs is eclectic. Some real bluesy rockers, one cover which is an exceptional cover of Traffic's "Empty Pages" which shows off Jerry Fishers power to good advantage. A strong progressive instrumental called "Inner Crisis" which shows off Georg Wadenius' uniqueness to great effect.
The group features some beautiful short instrumentals that segue nicely in both cases to some real rockers.
"Almost Sorry", "Empty Pages", "Back Up Against the Wall", "Inner Crisis", "Save Our Ship" are all real high points in the group's repertoire.
The arrangements are all top flight. The brass section that this group is known for is every bit the match for any version this group has ever had.
The arrangments make use of the new members quite well and without ever being clinical. Everything with the song in mind and in context.
"No Sweat" ranks right up there for me. The virtuosity matches the first two recording. The material is as varied and as interesting.
This one doesn't disappoint.
Tears...of Joy!.......2005-08-24
I have always felt that next to the the first album ("Child Is Father To The Man"), "No Sweat" is the best BS&T album.
Exceptional musicianship (Wadenius, Bargeron & Willis in particular) combined with quality material make this a must have.
This realease sounds wonderful and once again Wounded Bird has done an exceptional job with the sound of this CD.
Highly recommeded !
The best of the Jerry Fisher albums, finally on CD!.......2005-08-02
Thank goodness somebody finally saw the light of day and decided to release some of the later period B,S and T albums on CD! Wounded Bird Records has released no less than five of them, the last few recorded for the Columbia label, and all sound excellent to my ears! True, the band never was able to recapture the success of "You've Made Me So Very Happy" or "Spinning Wheel", but don't discount these albums either, as they all have something interesting to offer musically. They will no doubt make diehard fans of the band rejoice.
Personally, I am finally happy to have the Jerry Fisher era albums on CD. With the exception of New Blood, that was only previously available as a hard to find overseas import, none of these albums were ever available on CD before...and that's a shame. I am a particular fan of Jerry's voice, and always thought that it was a shame that none of his material with B,S and T ever hit it particularly big.
This album, No Sweat, is my favorite out of Jerry's work with the band. There's a really good mix of music on this...from a rocking version of Steve Winwood's Empty Pages...to the mellow and soulful My Old Lady...to the funky instrumental Inner Crisis, featuring a great guitar and voice solo from George Wadenius. Good stuff!
I recommend all of the Wounded Bird reissues whole heartedly! Hopefully somebody down the road will see the potential in releasing the Brand New Day album, thusly insuring B, S and T fans that their entire catalogue will finally find a lasting place in digital history.

The first hip-hop band.......2004-02-19
Stet was the first "hip-hop band" - maybe not as much a real band as, say, the Roots are. But nonetheless something different in their time.
Quite an eclectic mix for '91 - sometimes fun, sometimes serious. I think it's a slept-on old school classic. The MC's all have their own unique great delivery.
It's surprising that they all pretty much fell off the face of the earth after this one (except for Prince Paul).
This cd's been out of print for awhile, so it might be hard to track down.
What?.......2004-01-23
I wrote this review just b/c someone else wrote a terrible review. For your info, Stetsasonic is one of the founding groups of hip hop. They are a great live band and pioneered the way for groups such as the Roots. Many consider this to be Stetsasonic's best and most diverse album. The group includes: DJ's "Prince Paul" Huston and Leonard "Wise" Roman, keyboard, drummer and DJ Marvin "DBC" Nemley, and rappers Glenn "Daddy O" Bolton, Marvin "Delite" Wright, and Bobby "Frukwan" Simmons.
Not Sure.......1999-09-02
Im not sure what rating to give this. This is either a one star in terms of new school or an old school classic. I bought this because Prince Paul is the producer, but he doesnt even produce half the tracks and he even rhymes a little. On the ones he does produce, he doesnt sound anything like his recent work. So I wouldnt buy this album for that reason. The lyrics are very old school and pretty simple. To me most of the material ends up sounding the same, and I had trouble listening to the whole thing. There are more live instruments which is a plus, so if you like the Roots you might try this, but I dont like old school very much, so I cant say that I liked it.

Having earned his composing stripes after the 1960s, John Adams had the pioneering work of Steve Reich, Philip Glass, and Terry Riley close at hand as he ventured into his trade. And, while minimalism's historical continuum helps place Adams, he used Reich, Glass, and Riley (among others) only as a starting point. And here's proof: a 10-CD retrospective of nearly all Adams's recorded compositions on Nonesuch Records, the label that also issued Steve Reich 1965-1995 and Kronos Quartet: 25 Years. Adams's Harmonium, a choral work of startling energy and effervescence, appears here in a new recording, as do distillations of both The Death of Klinghoffer and Nixon in China, two path-clearing operas. Over the span of a career covered by Earbox, Adams has returned minimalism to traditional instrumental ensembles as well as to projects that at once advanced a political commentary and took that commentary back to orchestral audiences. And so, in far less time than his predecessors, Adams created works that now play like standard repertoire pieces: The Wound Dresser and Shaker Loops and the Violin Concerto--all of them are here. What these works demonstrate is a fierce creativity on the one hand and perhaps a hunger for commercial advances on the other. Adams may at times be a bustling free thinker, but he sounds ever conscious of what audiences are listening to. As for the works themselves, they remain every bit as daunting as when written.
Some may object to particular selections. I Was Looking at the Ceiling and Then I Saw the Sky, for example, hardly ranks with Adams's best work. But this box isn't a mere best-of; it's an almost-all-of. At times terrifically American--especially in the news-aware operas and their narrative pragmatism--Adams well deserves a major box set, and its coverage is appropriate to his varied, stylistically diverse output. As with any large-scale retrospective, Earbox--which fairly bristles with Adams's new composition, Slonimsky's Earbox--has spots where fans might balk at the quality of the composer's writing. But it's got a fantastic accompanying booklet along with its many hours of inarguably modern and thoroughly listener-friendly music. --Andrew Bartlett
Customer Reviews:
Moved to tears.......2004-03-18
Never before in my life was i moved so intensely and directly by classical music. I put the first cd in my player and a few minutes later tears are flowing. I find myself dancing and moving to a rythm i already seem to know. Wow, i just have to share that.
Nonesuch delivers.Again.......2002-11-27
John adams is one of the most popular living composers of"modern" classical music[I believe the cutoff point, though arbitrary is usually WWII}.I came to him late, through my husband. Modersn classical music , I said? What the hell is that?My husband kept playing bits and pieces of adams for me, and more and more i found myself amazed. and swayed. His operas have been groundbreaking{Nixon in China} controversial{Death Of klinghoffer},his compostions sublimely beautiful{shaker Loops or harmonium].HIS STATURE IS WORTHY THEN OF SUCH A MONUMENTAL CAREER SPANNING BOX SET.This 10 disc set[great value, again from NONESUCH}encompasses Adams' entire career, and though there are some misses here{I was looking at the ceiling and then i saw the sky doesnt quite fit},it is still magnificent. the Highlights are ,{for me} the Wound Dresser, Chamber symphony,Violin Concerto, of course, Shaker Loops and Harmonuim are wonderful. The true jewels here are Nixon in China, the Chairman dances and the Death of Klinghoffer, which is simply a masterpiece. The set comes with a wonderful book, which contains essay's by Robert Hurwitz {An Uncommon Man}renaud Machart[John adams as seen from europe} and Essays before an earbox by Adams himself.A Chronology and dicography are included. A wonderful study of an American original, worth the investment, Highly highly recommended
harmonia in excelsis.......2001-11-12
I must agree with Mr. Bartlett, particularly with regard to "Ceiling." It may well be because his Violin Concerto and Harmonielehre are so powerful. 4.5 stars.
Interesting, and likely intentional, is that two names in the extensive liner book fail to mention two great and glaringly obvious precursors: Carl Orff and Raymond Scott. Without "Carmina Burana," there would be no "Harmonium." Orff has his mark all over Adams's gifted and epic compositions. Similarly, though there are glib references to "cartoon music," the polymath engineer/musician Scott is a seminal figure in American music, and casts a large shadow over the witty juxtapositions and sense of play one loves in Adams's work. In all, an excellent career overview.
Our greatest living composer.......2001-07-22
As a composer, I'm staggered that anyone could fail to be gripped by this music.
That anyone can use the words "spoiled, overrated" amazes me. I emphatically disagree with "A music fan"'s review.
I don't think it's "mind-numbing"; I think it's spiritual and exciting. To me it's the most substantial music being created in our times.
I'm really sorry that anyone could fail to enjoy it, and really recommend others to listen for themselves.
Wonderful CD.......2000-04-02
This compilation should turn even the most curmudgeonly listerner into a fan. Beautifully recorded, great notes -- and it's a heck of a bargain!

Great musicians at their best.......2004-09-21
Gary Willis is a simply phenomenal bass player. Victor Wooten may be well into the upper stratosphere, but Gary is right there with him in high earth orbit. This, Willis' freshman solo album takes the talent, finesse and versatility he showed both on Tribal Tech's many great entries and on his second solo album, Bent, and show that Willis is a master worth watching. He'll be leading us to new highs in the future.

NYHC intensity, in my opinion their best release.......2006-03-25
Full of intensity and power, you can't go wrong with this classic piece of NYHC. As the man says, SOIA were "spreadin' the hardcore reality in '89." The vocals get me every time: it's not the same "screamed at the top of the lungs" paradigm as other HC albums. More shouted, from the gut, full of a brooding, seething anger, rather than all-out rage. Makes for a great listen.
Highlights: "Blood and the Sweat," "Breeders of Hate," "Friends Like You," "G.I. Joe Headstomp," "Disillusion," "Injustice System."
Alley Way Crew!!.......2003-08-09
Damn this is the one and only best SOIA release. Different than the other Youth Crew 88 bands. Play very intense energy hardcore punk in your face style. Very energy and not just give you sweat while moshing with the song. Blood is everywhere in the pit and you will have tears coming out from your eyes coz you will remember them who in the pit back on the early days while this album is out. See ya!!!
If you don't like this, you probably were not there..........2003-03-26
I have to admit, if I wasn't in the "hardcore" scene when this album came out I probably wouldn't have been interested. But I was, and this album hold a special place in my heart.
It sounds dated now, but this album pegged the anger and agression of this musical scene. Add on to it the experience of seeing SOIA live (an unequalled experience) and you have a seminal hardcore album.
Its a must have for anyone looking to understand hardcore roots, and for nostagia for those who listened to this music "back in the day"...
True HC Pioneers.......2002-06-15
This CD really brought harcore music to a new level. Blood, Sweat, and No Tears was the first hardcore album that really spoke to me with its intensity and true punk sincerity. As far as I am concerned, these guys single-handedly brought punk rock to a much higher musical level than it had been previously, and pioneered a wave of heavier sounding punk, without the metal cheese. You can listen to this whole album and you'll never doubt that Lou is really "sick of it all", especially with legendary tunes "Injustice System" and "Clobberin' TIme". Their future albums such as Scratch the Surface, Just Look Around, Built to Last, etc..., although are very well produced, cannot match the raw intensity of Blood, Sweat, and No Tears. To get a good idea of what the NYHC scene in the late 80's/early 90's was all about, check this album out. You will not be disappointed.
A true original.......2001-02-28
When this album came out in '89, hard core was in a huge upswing. AF had just come out with "Live at CBGB" and every heavy metal band in the world, from Metallica to Slayer, where huge fans of NY hard core. The Koller boys exploded onto the NYC scene and have since taken it over. Their songs explode with intensity and their lyrics hit home with thousands of hardcore fans who have no other outlet in their lives.
Just listen to what they're saying in their songs. "Disillusioned" talks about how society wants you to live your life with blinders on your eyes, and with an open mind at the same time. "Alone" is my anthem, "All I want to be is left alone!" Every song on this album has a point and a message.
SOIA have carried through on the promise they made to all their hardcore fans on this first album. They have kept it real.

Good sounding ten track longplayer by a band that I really haven't heard anything about since this CD was released. No Sweat puts forth their own brand of 'melodic heavy rock' for those who might fully appreciate it.Best tunes include "On The Edge","Generation" and the ass-kicking "Tear Down The Walls"(simply never could get enough of THIS song).Just might appeal to fans of Bolt Thrower,Corrosion Of Conformity.Give it a try.
Better than average melodic hard rock.......2004-04-21
No Sweat's self-titled debut album is a solid, melodic hard rock effort. Much like Steelheart, Firehouse, Tyketto, or Von Groove, No Sweat combined catchy melodies, guitar hooks, energetic vocals, and love song/party rock lyrics. It's pretty standard stuff for that era (1990), but it is a good example of why that period's hard rock is so much fun to listen to. If the band had been given a bigger push by the record company, they probably would have been quite popular; at least until Nirvana and the rest of the flannel-wearing crowd arrived. Those of you who still like your rock catchy, melodic, and not quite so serious should find No Sweat's self-titled album to be very enjoyable. It's not an easy disc to track down, but it is well worth the effort.
