Dick Dale's surf-guitar provided the memorable title theme ("Misirlou"), for Quentin Tarantino's 1994 smash, and although that sound runs throughout the soundtrack (along with bits and pieces of dialog from the movie), this is a pretty eclectic bunch of really terrific songs. I don't know how it all manages to hang together, but it does (you might say the same for the interwoven stories in the movie). Where else are you going to find Chuck Berry, Maria McKee, Al Green, The Statler Brothers, Kool & the Gang, Urge Overkill (singing a Neil Diamond ballad!), Ricky Nelson, Dusty Springfield, and the Tornadoes (among others) one album? McKee's beautiful "If Love is a Red Dress (Hang Me in Rags)" is a standout, partly because it's less familiar. One of the few soundtracks of the '90s that went into the CD player and stayed there for weeks and months thereafter. --Jim Emerson

Where's Wray?.......2007-04-16
I can't say anything about this soundtrack that hasn't been said a hundred times. The known songs are great and the surf songs are better. I just wonder why Tarantino didn't include Link Wray's "Rumble" that is played in the background during the Jack Rabbit Slims scene. It is such a great song, it would have put this soundtrack over the edge.
The soundtrack is better than the film..........2007-04-03
I like this soundtrack a ton. Surprisingly, despite the fact that I love films, I rarely buy soundtracks. I only buy them if I dig the music. This is one of the few soundtracks I have, and I play it quite a lot. I think Tarantino is an overrated filmmaker, but his choice of music here is excellent. I really like the Chuck Berry song You Never Can Tell, and I really love Miserlou, the theme of Pulp Fiction. Son of a Preacher Man is a bonafide classic, and I dig Jungle Boogie, which is superior to Kool and the Gang's awful Celebration song. This soundtrack is better than the film.
Still Tarantino's best.......2007-03-13
PULP FICTION is a movie replete with coarse language and violence. The soundtrack album accurately reflects that film. In particular, on track #1, Honey Bunny's exclamation prior to "Misrilou" is not for the faint of heart. Be advised that this CD is definitely NOT for the easily-offended.
The PULP FICTION soundtrack is a unique mix of primarily surf music, with a sprinkling of funk, pop and country. If you enjoyed the movie, this album is sure to please. Just don't play it for your grandmother!
TOTAL RUNNING TIME -- 41:28
I recommend this soundtrack........2007-03-09
Even if you aren't a big fan of the movie, the Pulp Fiction soundtrack is a must-have for music lovers of all types. It's especially enjoyable if you like the movie.
Really good music.......2007-02-13
Great songs. Just put this on and you are back in the movie. Good quality recordings as well. Much better than the original in some cases.

The Essential 60's Masters.......2007-04-12
Great collection of Elvis 60's music. Be sure to treat yourself to the 50's and 70's collection to complete your collection. There are several songs not included on other cd's. You won't be disappointed.
If I Can Dream?.......2007-03-26
Why isn't that song on here? That's a fantastic song! Mercy!
Great for Long-Time or New Fans.......2005-12-04
I'm a relatively new Elvis fan and I didn't know where to begin because there are so many albums and hit collections... I decided on starting with this box set because it spanned so much of his career and because it included an alternate version of my favorite song of his - Suspicious Minds.
The sound remastering is excellent and the packaging is great. Well worth the $$.
This is a must have for the long-time Elvis fan or the new fan like me! I'm definitely hooked on Elvis now and I plan to follow up this purchase with his 50s and 70s box set.
Excellent but incomplete.......2005-09-30
Proof that Elvis had many fine recordings during the 60's! Even though some of the material may not be the best, Elvis' performances are. I was impressed by many of the early 60's recordings, that I had not heard before. A very strong but incomplete collection! Unfortunately, this box set does not include several of Elvis' 60's hits from his movies or his Gospel songs. This is especially disconcerting for a box set (the only Grammies he won were for his Gospel recordings!). If you are going to buy this box set, you should go ahead a buy the 2 CD release "Command Performances: The Essential 60's Masters II" and the 2 CD "Amazing Grace: His Greatest Sacred Performances" to fill in the holes in this collection.
They should have just added a CD or two to this box set and included some of his key movie and Gospel songs in a single collection, but then they would have only had a shot at one GOLD Record Award instead of two or three...
Essential 60's Masters.......2005-06-24
I was dissapointed to see that this set does not contain all of the Elvis Masters from the 60's. It only contians what RCA considers "essential." For example, if you want live, gospel, or movie material, you must go elsewhere. This just does not have it. On the other hand, what the box set does have is great and it leaves you wanting more.

Naxos, the Little Label That Could, has emerged as the music industry's foremost advocate of American music with their American Classics series. Now, they've turned their attention to one of the greatest composers of American Romanticism, Howard Hanson. This inaugural disc contains a performance of the First Symphony that easily trumps the Gerard Schwarz-Seattle Symphony on Delos. Hanson himself has recorded the work several times, but the Naxos release has much better sound quality (and you'll like the breadth of the Nashville Symphony's vision of this delicious music). The same holds for the celebratory "Merry Mount" Suite. However, this release contains two rare discmates, the symphonic poem Pan and the Priest and Rhythmic Variations on Two Ancient Themes. Spectacular music of undeniable character. --Paul Cook
Customer Reviews:
OK First Hanson Outing.......2006-04-01
Howard Hanson is one of America's great Romantic composers. Also well regarded as a teacher, Hanson unabashedly donned Romanticism when it was out of fashion. Four great works represent this style: Symphony No. 1 "Nordic", Merry Mount Suite, Pan and Priest, and Rhythmic Variations on Two Ancient Hymns.
Hanson's 32-minute "Nordic" Symphony, his first, lends its ear to Sibelius, the Finnish composer, as well as perhaps, Hanson's own Swedish heritage. The best description of the opening movement (three in total), is Romantic sweep. The long melodies are aided by lengthy time signatures (5/4, 9/4, 6/4, and 7/4). The music seems to me like the soundtrack to an old black and white romance movie; the foreboding drama, thick lush strings, forceful horns, long melodic line, and grand climaxes. The second movement carries the cinematic feel with plaintive wind solos, a dramatic climax where the strings take over the melody in a grand sweep. The final movement is just as heroic as you would expect; the work ends in a temperamental minor mode. Perhaps a bit old-fashioned, the symphony is an invigorating experience with ideas popular around the turn-of-the-century.
The famous Merry Mount Suite (18 minutes) is taken from Hanson's opera of the same name. In five parts (Overture, Children's Dance, Love Duet, Prelude to Act II, and Maypole Dances), the subject revolves around 1600's Puritans dealing with temptations of the devil as well as local heathens. The forceful brass chorales and tolling bells of the overture set the scene with an antique quality. The playful nature of the Children's Dance is aided by witty orchestration, a battery of percussion, and a relentless rhythmical quality with jazzy syncopations. The love duet is peacefully tranquil, but builds to a passionate climax on numerous occasions and revels in warmth. The Prelude is an evocation of spring and preparing for a festival, while the Maypole Dances are an almost medieval sounding celebration rooted in ancient ritual. A spirited and varied musical suite, full of great tunes, musical moments, and drama.
The 13-minute symphonic poem Pan and Priest represents musically the age-old conflict between the spiritual and religious and revelry and sensuality. Long chant-like melodies represent spirituality, while aggressive brass and rhythms represent Pan. In its time, this work was regarded a great American work, but rarely found today. Rhythmic Variations on Two Ancient Hymns is scored for full string orchestra; a lush, Romantic contemplation on hymns, including an attractive solo violin section and some great harmonies. At eight minutes, the variation technique shows Hanson's ability to create great musical scenerios.
This budget Naxos recording features Kenneth Schermerhorn and the Nashville Symphony Orchestra, not a first-class ensemble, but by all accounts on this recording, a very fine ensemble of professional musicians. Schermerhorn leads well, a bit langorous in tempo, but solid performances. The recording quality by Naxos dropped the ball, however, the ensemble seems a bit far away and the woodwinds cannot be heard when the full ensemble is playing (save the piccolo) and still some troubles of balance when not the full ensemble. With the exception of the Variations, the strings lack a little in the warmth department and the winds suffer a little too; the brass do well, however. Compared to Gerard Schwarz and the Seattle Symphony on Delos, the choice is tough: monetary vs. balance issues; you will have to compare on your own.
Suprisingly AMAZING.......2005-05-17
Who's ever heard of the Nashville Symphony Orchestra? I hadn't until I saw this CD and purchased it. I can't understand how the works of Howard Hanson are som underaprreciated he played such a big role in the advent of Modern American Music. Symphony no 1 was written in 1922. These works are all romantic at heart. My favorite piece on the disc is Symphony 1. It is a really grand and tuneful work. The playing of the work is very lush. Also the Suite from the Opera Merry Mount is very playful. I wasn't familiar with Rhythmic Variations on Two Ancient Hymns and I can say it is just as stunning as the symphony.
One of the best introductions to Howard Hanson's work.......2004-06-12
The late Howard Hanson was a man of many talents. He was a gifted conductor, an inspired composer, and one of the greatest educators in the history of American music.
Unfortunately, like so many composers, Hanson's work became neglected. Hanson was an arch-romantic. His lush and romantic scores were written at the same time as Stravinsky was shocking Parisian audiences, as Copland and Thomson were stressing the importance of Americana, and as Henry Cowell was touring Europe and America with his music based on tone clusters. However, this is no reason to neglect Hanson's work.
The Symphony No. 1 "Nordic" is one of my favourite Hanson works. The recording that the composer himself made of Mercury remains my favourite, though this version has quickly become a favourite as well. Maestro Schermerhorn has the advantages of a well trained ensemble. Schermerhorn is a gifted conductor and makes this work sound like what it actually is, one of the masterpieces of American music. The other works on the CD are no less interesting. In short, this is probably the best introduction to Hanson's work as a composer. One hopes that there will be many more Hanson CDs from Schermerhorn and the Nashville Symphony!
A Home Run!.......2001-02-13
The superlatives never end. Thank you, Naxos. You were one of my least favorite bargain labels (contrary to all of the hoopla), but with this disc, you convince me!
The conducting is outstanding, the music gorgeous, and the Nashville Symphony is just wonderful. Wow. The engineering is even good!
Buy this.
An auspicious start to a new Hanson series.......2000-11-14
This is a terrific coupling of Howard Hanson's orchestral music, both well-known and barely-known. It is advertised as Volume I of his orchestral works, and, if Kenneth Schermerhorn and Naxos follow through with the rest of Hanson's orchestral works, this could result in a near-definitive essay of one of America's most important and beloved composers.
Others, including Hanson himself, on Mercury Living Presence and Gerard Schwarz and the Seattle Symphony Orchestra on Delos, have recorded his central repertoire, including the symphonies and the larger orchestral works. But no series was ever completed; Hanson's own foray, with the Eastman-Rochester Orchestra, was cut short by his retirement from active conducting in the mid-'60's. So this is a very welcome start to what this Hanson fan hopes to be a complete essaying of the orchestral works.
Basically conservative and an arch romantic, Hanson had been considered a "throwback" composer during much of his life, bypassing the avant garde, serialism, modernism, post-modernism, minimalism and all other "ism's" of the 20th century. But his music is immediately accessible and is characterized by a gift for melody, harmonic lushness and rich chromaticism reminiscent of Bruckner. Born of Swedish stock in Wahoo, Nebraska, his music comes naturally by its "Nordic" sense of place, with the symphonies and other works of Sibelius clearly in his musical DNA. But there are other identifiable musical "signatures" in addition to Sibelius and Bruckner: Hanson's frequent use of tympani ostinato in his symphonies recalls the opening bars of Brahms' 1st Symphony, and his often brilliant splashes of orchestra color, particularly high woodwinds, is a reminder that, after winning the American Prix de Rome in 1920, he studied under Ottorino Respighi while in Rome. (At the time, Respighi had only written "The Fountains of Rome," the first of three parts of his Roman triptych; "The Pines of Rome" and "Roman Festivals" were written after Hanson had returned to the U.S.)
I will cheerfully go on record to state that Schermerhorn's performance of the "Nordic" Symphony is the best available, from the perspectives of interpretation, performance and recorded sound quality. (Hanson's would of course have been the definitive one, were the Eastman-Rochester Orchestra up to snuff, and had Mercury had the access to recording technology that is presently available.) With modestly careful listening, one can pick out all of the musical signatures noted above, yet still conclude that Hanson is his own man, with his own musical thoughts to express.
Hanson's one opera, "Merry Mount," had been an instant success at its premiere, but has since languished in near-obscurity save for the orchestral suite which he fashioned from its incidental music. The "Love Duet" makes a strong case for a remounting of this opera; it is a gorgeous piece of music just waiting for the complete opera to surround it.
"Pan and the Priest" is an early tone poem, making its recording premiere, as far as I know, in this coupling. It brings to mind several of the great tone poems written by Sir Arnold Bax, Hanson's British contemporary, as well as those of Hugo Alfvén, his Swedish contemporary. This is excellent company to be allied with, and it is our loss that Hanson did not write more works in this genré. Identifiably Hanson, it holds up very well in comparison with the the poems of Bax and Alfvén.
"Rhythmic Variations on Two Ancient Hymns" also receives a recording premiere here. Modal in structure and feel, it is reminiscent of the simiarly modal music of Ralph Vaughan Williams.
Spendid performances and recording of a great cross-section of Hanson's orchestral works. Like Schermerhorn's Ives Symphony No. 2 which came immediately after this Hanson disc, yet another American Classics triumph for Naxos, "the little label that could."

I was blown away by this CD. My animals are the greatest source of joy in my life and this CD puts all of my feelings into the words and music I could never express myself! Mary Ann's love for her horses and other animal family members shines through in her soulful voice. She reaches right out and touches the heart of anyone who listens. It will make you laugh, it will make you cry...just like the animals who "grace our lives" do every day. Here's to Mary Ann for helping us all recognize and appreciate how much love our dogs, horses, cats and other animal friends add to our existence on this planet!

An American Treasure.......2002-11-10
My wife and I saw Darrell with former New Grassers Sam Bush and John Cowan in Somerset (not too terribly far from Harlan County), Kentucky, in 1998. Neither of us had ever heard of the New Grass Revival (get their stuff, too) and we knew nothing of Darrell. Darrell did two of his songs (accompanied by these two newgrass gods) for that show. We were immediately taken with "Harlan," especially since we both have deep Eastern Kentucky roots. The performance was one of the best I've ever witnessed, and I've seen Miles, Dizzy, the Stones, Michael Hedges, and a ton of great acts. These guys blew all of that away! We HAD to find out who they were (John's voice is incredible and Sam is a fantastic showman) and buy the rest of their stuff - and we have since then. We took a chance and bought Darrell's disc at the show and were gratified to learn that it was probably one of the best impulse buys we've ever made. Darrell's music is authentic, uniquely American, personal, and exceptionally well-crafted and well-played. One reviewer noted that this was a low-buck project, but you cannot tell. The polish (never more than necessary) and attention to detail is worthy of some of the best (over)paid artists in music-dom today. Buy all of his albums before Nashville decides to syndicate him! I cannot recommend his work enough. We've given this and his second album as gifts to friends of varying tastes and ages, and it has always been well-received and played until the grooves are worn off the disc. In case you haven't already noticed, Travis, the Chicks, Garth, and many, many others have covered songs from this and his other two albums. If anyone deserves to get rich and fat from their work, it is definitely Darrell Scott. He'd better hurry and release a new album because the Nashville hep-cats will soon be running out of fresh, new songs to buy for their pretty-but-not-terribly-talented video country music artists. "They got Junior, but they don't got Hank . . ."
BLEW ME AWAY!.......2002-07-31
Darrell Scott is awesome! I first heard him at a Opry Plaza Party in Nashville. What a performer! I knew then I had to have his CD's. I got Aloha from Nashville and was not let down. The CD is full of great songs. This guy does it all. I really like You'll Never Leave Harlan Alive since I am from KY myself. It's a Great Day to Be Alive is a great song as well. Travis Tritt had a huge hit with that song. I believe everyone can relate to that song. You may also remember Heartbreak Town
since the Dixie Chicks did that one. It is just a great album. Highly Recommended!
It all starts here.......2001-11-03
The first time that I heard Darrell Scott was on the wonderful "Reel Time" CD with Tim O'Brien. Shortly after that project was released, I got to hear the two of them at a concert in Michigan. WOW!
This project contains the original versions of two of the best songs ever written in American music: "Never Leave Harlan Alive" and "Great Day to be Alive." It's the "ying and yang" of our lives.
There's just a lot of truth here. Darrell's work has a profoundly spiritual quality beneath a wry and poignant sense of humor. This is certainly a low budget "indie" project but Darrell's talent is just so overwhelming that it overcomes any weakness in the production.
I think that Darrell has a lot in common with Buddy Miller- it's a darn shame that talent and experience like this doesn't attract more attention from music buyers. In one word, I would describe Darrell as "authentic." He's the real deal.
Probably the best songwriter alive........2000-12-21
I'm not kidding. Beautiful, poignant lyrics matched with a smooth, gentle voice make this my hands-down favorite album of all time. I love every inch of this CD. Even my WIFE loves it, and we have wildly different musical tastes. I still tear up as I sing along with Darrell on "Harlan" and "It's a Great Day" has become my personal anthem. Buy this album with no regrets.
Pure music that touches the soul.......1999-07-07
I consider myself fortunate to have recently stumbled accross this CD by Darrell Scott. Not only is he an extremely talented singer and instrumentalist - he also has the ability as a song-writer to reach out and touch the listener. Particularly of interest to me was "You'll Never Leave Harlan Alive" as it helped me to visulaize my own grandparents living in the mountains of Eastern Kentucky and the struggles they went through. With upbeat songs like "Head South" and "It's a Great Day to Be Alive", I find myself humming the tune and singing throughout the day. Again, not enough can be said about Darrell's skills on the various instruments he plays. I would recommend this CD based on the instrumentation alone!

It Came From NashVegas and got stronger and stronger and..........2005-12-29
I knew there had to be another Demo tape out there
somewhere that had those great old Webb Wilder cuts
from that 1986 Concert at the Exit Inn - and now we
have them. It's good to see this back in print/cir-
culation again since it faded away several years ago.
I first bought it on vinyl (showing my roots again!
many years ago and still love it. Minor drawback with
that borong cover of Steve Earl's '...'Right Hand'
again but 25 strong songs aside, still the best Webb
ever did - though not by much! The 'Idol of Idle Youth'
is BAACKKKKKKKKKK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Guitar rock & roll will leave you breathless.......2005-03-19
Git it! Git it! Git it! Great guitar work, great song writing, great sound. A MUST have for any Americana and/or Rock & Roll fan.
DJK0811.......2004-11-17
Went to the Album Release Party in Chicago and was amazed that the band keeps getting stronger and stronger. The re-mastered "It Came From Nashville" along with the added tracks is proof positive that Webb is an electrifying artist. Even if you have the original, you need to add this to your WW collection. The live tracks are crisp and the music is incredible -- as always, leaving you wanting more Webb.
New and Improved.......2004-09-16
This is the Sept.2004 re-release by Landslide Records of Webb Wilder's legendary first album. The Deluxe Full-Grown Edition.
It's all remastered and sounds great. It's a mix of live and studio tracks. The songs are roots-rock at it's finest. There are also 6 extra live tracks from the same show that produced the original live material, plus more of Webb's witty banter. 26 tracks, over 71 minutes. Don't wait! Pick up on it!

Customer Reviews:
Give it a chance-really.......2003-05-07
Plain and simple if you like good music , then you cannot go wrong with this double CD. I appreciate good music, but I usually prefer alternative music from the 1980's through today. However I decided to buy this as a gift for my wife. We listened to it and wow, some of these songs, especially the Burt Bacharach stuff is so 60's cool. I am not familiar with other interpretations, but Anita does a fine job here. She has a strong smooth voice. I thought she would be a bit more sultry in her singing some of these, but maybe that is the point. The song is so good, she doesn't need to add more sensuality. I will say her male back-up singers get in the way at times.
Put it on as you are working around the house and you'll find yourself huming these songs in no time!
I'd Forgotten.......2001-01-09
I remember the album the Anita Kerr Singers Reflect on the Music of Bacharach and David. I'd forgotten the wonderful smooth voices and terrific arrangements. I've since learned that this group sang backup on literally hundreds of Nashville hits during the 60's. A wonderful group run by a woman, in a time when women got little respect.
A Lyrical and Instrumental Masterpiece.......2000-05-01
Anita Kerr was a gifted arranger, composer, conductor, and songstress. This CD captures two of her better known and widely admired albums. This first is a soft and sentimental reflection on many of the works of the legendary Burt Bacharach and Hal David. The second is a livelier, more vivid interpretation of works made famous by The Beatles, Frank Sinatra, Andy Williams and others. And that's what Anita Kerr and her singers do best...provide their own fresh and original interpretation of contemporary pop classics of their era.
Their warm, mellow, vocal harmonies are accented by sharp, clear brass; soaring strings; rich, deep bass; and rhythmic percussion. The vocal and instrumental treatments combine to form music ringing with subtlety, clarity, and matchless beauty. Their music evokes a rainbow of emotions from whimsy, to reflection, to romance, and even rapture. This is a CD to soothe the soul and inspire the heart...
Much of her Best Work.......2000-02-08
IMHO, "Reflect..." was arguably the best AK album recorded with her classic line up. After her tenure with Decca, as part of the famous "Nashville Sound" Machine of the 60s, AK went on to record a series of concept albums featuring her restrained yet sexy jazz-pop voice, her sensitively capable singers, and her voluptuous orchestral arrangements.
Until recently, these masters have been locked away in record vaults all over the world, held hostage by late-60s label failures/takeovers and studio/marketing politics. I'm very glad, however, to see them slowly return to the catalogue through semi-independent companies like COLLECTOR'S CHOICE and ONE WAY RECORDS (and at an affordable price as well).
With "Reflect" remastered, released and in my possession, I now await "Its AK Country," "We Dig Mancini" and "The Sea" to reappear so I can also add these classics to my collection.
So, how about it, guys?
This is marvelous CD; add it to your collection.......2000-01-16
This is it. Stop shopping. Any lover of 70s tunes, especially Bacharach, will love this double album set of Anita Kerr singers. The quartet's harmony and arranging is superb and the talented foursome provides its own introspection on some of Bacharach's more meaningful songs, i.e Alfie, Windows of the World, etc. This is not Ray Conniff by any means. Sublime vocals and a disc you'll never tire of listening to.

Dissipointing.......2005-06-12
Aaron Copland's writing here is spectacular, american in every sense and classic. The performances, are so-so. I could be wrong, but the other performance I have heard of Appalachian Spring conducted by Copeland Himself, is much much better. This is to quiet, to background. The Clarinet Concerto, who have been nice to hear from Jimmy Hamilton (Duke Ellington's Clarinet player). Im sure Laura Arden is a great clarinet player, she certainly has skill, but it just dosent fit. Quiet City is alright, a little to quiet, but its supposed to be.
Four-and-a-half stars, really.......2002-12-13
Nashville is one of those American cities, like LA, that has a deeper than expected pool of really fine instrumental musicians, in their case because of the country music industry there. And the Nashville Symphony, and now the Nashville Chamber Orchestra, have made some fine recordings for the ever-resourceful talent scouts at Naxos. Of course, Naxos USA is based in Tennessee, too, so maybe there's some connection there. All of which is to say, this is a fine recording.
There are umpty-ump recordings of Copland's 'Appalachian Spring', in various of its instrumental guises. This is the familiar suite fashioned by Copland and premièred by the New York Philharmonic in 1945, after the piece had been such a hit the year before with Martha Graham's dance company in a version for thirteen instruments. This performance has much to recommend it--rhythmic verve, dead-on intonation, respect for the folk-tinged nostalgia of the piece. It doesn't eclipse recordings by Copland himself or Bernstein, say, but it can certain hold its head up.
The rarely heard 'Three Latin American Sketches', which couples 'Estribillo', the last orchestral piece Copland wrote (1972), with two pieces written in the 1950s, are given decent performances. One keeps expecting something comparable to 'El Salon Mexico' but, of course, that doesn't happen. The pieces are not from Copland's top drawer, but certainly deserve to be heard.
The Clarinet Concerto, played here by Laura Arden, always startles with its wickedly difficult cadenza which links the concerto's two jazzy movements, and Arden really delights with that and the down and dirty gliss that ends the piece. This one's a keeper.
The only slightly less than terrific performance on the disc is 'Quiet City', and that's not the fault of the English horn and trumpet soloists; no, they do a fine job. This piece, which is mostly quiet, mostly pensive, needs to have a strong backbone; this performance is too soft-edged. One does not get the sense of a great city in the hour just before dawn, as Copland intended, but perhaps more middle-of-the-night Peoria (no offense, Peorians!). There's not enough angst here, not enough loneliness.
The sound, as one expects from Naxos, is good. There are good program notes by Viola Ruth.
