        By the time Lacy recorded this album, it seems that radio stations were no longer interested in her music - a pity, because the quality remained high. Perhaps it's not quite as good as Survivor or Lacy J (her first two Universal/Capitol albums), but they were exceptional and no singer could maintain such a standard for any lengthy period. Nevertheless this is, by any normal standards, a brilliant album.

        There are three covers including Stay with me (a song originally by Exile, which Dave and Sugar had a major country hit with), Love hurts (first recorded by the Everly brothers but their version was never released as a single) and Bye bye love (another Everly brothers song, here performed as a duet with Eddie Rabbitt).

        As far as I know, all the other songs are originals, one of them, Never gonna lose my love, being co-written by Lacy. Other highlights include Heartache in disguise and Lay a little love on me, but every song here is worth a listen.

        If you are a fan of Lacy's music, look out for this album and any others you can find, especially Survivor and Lacy J. If you are unfamiliar with her music but you enjoy listening to Tanya Tucker, you'll love Lacy. Start with Anthology (the Renaissance compilation) if you can find it. Failing that, try Greatest hits or whatever else is available.

        Lacy released an album of new recordings in 2004, so she remains active. Long may she continue.

        Ms. Dalton released a record with this title in the 1980s, and a different CD, same title, recently, with different content. I wanted the one from the 1980s. The vendor was unaware of the earlier release and sent the more recent one. The picture provided shows the older release and lists its contents. When I brought this to the vendor's attention, I was given a prompt refund. While this could be expected, the vendor then went further and sent me further e-mails concerning where I might get a copy of the earlier release. I was very favorably impressed with this response and the helpful attitude it demonstrated and I take great pleasure in recomending this vendor as an honest and helpful source.

          Lacy became a country music star in the early eighties without ever quite achieving the level of success I hoped for. She parted company with Columbia in the mid-eighties but re-emerged with this album on Universal at the end of the eighties. I thought her Columbia music was brilliant but Lacy proved to be as good as ever here. Although Lacy only contributed to writing three of the songs here, it is clear that she could relate to all the songs here, which each relate in some way to the basic theme of life's struggles.

          The most famous song here is Still crazy after all these years, which is a cover of a Paul Simon song. Many of the other songs here are upbeat and assertive, such as I'm a survivor, Walking wounded, A diamond all the time, Turn to the one, The heart (a Kris Kristofferson song), They don't make them like they used to and Hard luck ace (a brilliant tribute to various people including Buddy Holly, Merle Haggard and Hank Williams Junior). The album slows down for Old friends (a Guy Clark song about how old friends are the ones you rely on) and Me and these arms.

          Lacy has made many great albums but this one is my favorite. Indeed, it is one of my all-time favorite albums of any kind.
