Editorial Reviews

Hungry Again, 1998's return to form, was the sound of a country legend with nothing to lose and playing for keeps. Still, that startling album barely presaged the seamless grace of Dolly Parton's subsequent celebration of her mountain roots. This may be a full-out bluegrass venture, but tradition only tells half the story. The daring set includes barnstorming remakes of songs by Billy Joel and Blackfoot, two new Parton originals, and the old-as-time folk narrative "Silver Dagger," transformed--via Sam Bush's vertiginous mandolin picking and Jerry Douglas's frenzied Dobro work--into a mysterious, ambient epic. It's a testament to the force of Parton's voice and personality that while surrounded by top-tier players like Stuart Duncan (fiddle) and Bryan Sutton (guitar) she's still the undeniable leader. Her singing is masterful, absolutely vibrating with energy and soulfulness. Along with Steve Earle's The Mountain, this is the finest bluegrass release of 1999, and one of the most fully realized albums of Dolly Parton's career. --Roy Kasten

The modern dolly.......2007-05-15
Leave it to Parton to kick off a "true bluegrass" album with a Billy Joel tune (!) - and pull it off.
The crack session cats here are atomic cool and Dolly, digging that, turns in the most nuanced and meticulous vocal performance of her career.
Class from start to finish, definite highlights include the rollicking hokum of "Cash on the Barrelhead," howdown rippin' on "Train, Train" and, with its simple, exquisitely-realized metaphors, Parton's self-penned title track.
Super credible!
Dolly Gets Back to Her Bluegrass Roots And Finds Vocal Gold.......2006-03-11
When Dolly Parton took the stage at the Academy Awards this past week to sing her song from "Transamerica", "Travelin' Thru", her effervescent vocalizing and natural buoyancy (pardon the pun) reminded me of what a great performer she truly is. For someone who has not really embraced country music, I have come over the years to appreciate the honesty, giggly sense of humor and abundant singing talent behind the glamorous trappings of her outsized persona. With 1999's "The Grass Is Blue", I have come to respect her as a true artist who has found a musical genre perfectly suited to her bird-like voice.
Supported by a superb ensemble of bluegrass musicians, she takes on songs as diverse as Billy Joel's "Travelin' Prayer" and traditionals like "Silver Dagger", my personal favorite thanks to Sam Bush's amazing mandolin playing and Jerry Douglas's equally impressive performance on the Dobro. Other standout tracks include the Louvin Brothers' comically sly "Cash on the Barrelhead", Shorty Medlocke's driving "Train, Train"; and Johnny Cash's plaintive "I Still Miss Someone". The disc ends with the powerfully churchy "I Am Ready", an a capella hymn-like song written by her sister Rachel Dennison. Even if you are not a fan of this type of music, the recording is done with such professional precision and style that it's pretty hard to resist.
Fantasic.......2006-02-12
If you love country music or bluegrass music you with drool over this CD and constantly listen to pure bluegrass music and Dolly's amazingly strong voice over and Over and Over!
Album Standouts: TRAVELIN' PRAYER, SILVER DAGGER, TRAIN TRAIN & THE GRASS IS BLUE
A timeless masterpiece.......2005-12-20
I bought "The Grass Is Blue" on the strength of the rave reviews which appear below. They didn't lie. This is one of the finest things I have ever heard, from ANY musical genre. I played it for my wife, who has zero bluegrass background, and she was just swept away by it. Every cut is strong, but the odd-numbered tracks appeal to me most, with "Steady As the Rain" being a particular highlight. Be warned, "The Grass Is Blue" may permanently hijack your musical tastes. Now when I listen to blues and rock standards that used to appeal, I just can't sustain interest for more than a few minutes. Nothing compares to the power, the purity, the soul that Dolly Parton delivers. I am compelled to go back to "The Grass Is Blue" for another deep drought of that cool living water. This is one album I never want to live without.

Album Description
Guy Klucevsek is teaching the accordion to whoop and wheeze in strange new ways. Once condemned to drunken requests for Who Stole the Kishka and Happy Wanderer, this virtuoso now plays deconstructed, reconstructed art songs and dance tunes, translated into a metalanguage of his own making. His is a musical Esperanto fashioned from hocketed melodies, giddy with arabesques; Henry Cowell-style tone clusters; the eerie difference tones of acoustic phenomena composer Pauline Oliveros; the hypnotic phasing and locomotive ostinatos of early minimalism; low register drones punctuated by high register yips, in a manner reminiscent of Scottish bagpipe and Bulgarian accordion music; dark, Gyorgi Ligeti-ish sound clouds, lit from within by lightning-like melodic flickerings; the metric modulations of Elliot Carter; a Morton Feldmanesque sense of grand gestures, and of microscopic movements; an appropriation aesthetic shared with John Zorn and other New York avant-gardists; and a rollicking, roisterous energy borrowed from dance forms and folk music the world over.
In Flying Vegetables of the Apocalypse, Klucevsek gives us a postmodern conundrum: dance music informed by avant-garde styles designed to be listened to in a straight-backed chair, wearing starched duds and too-tight shoes; art music enlivened by dance musics best appreciated while slipping and sliding over sweat-slick floors. It is, refreshingly, a holistic postmodernism rather than an explosion in the Toontown sounds effects department. The identities of the Slavic, South American, and American idioms from which the composer draws inspiration are preserved, while the twentieth century classicism that is his anchor remains unshakable.

I have not received this item yet. It is on back order. I had to rate it so put 3 stars. However sicne it hasn't been received I can't really rate it. You ought to take situations like this into consideration if you're going to do this sort of thing.
A Nice Assortment.......2001-03-13
The CD contains a nice selection of songs from composers who we may not hear that much of. I bought this CD for Copland's Dirge in Woods and it was very nice. But I found some other nice treasures on this CD too. Four vocalists, two males and two females, take on this sometimes very challenging music. The music for the most part is not soft and languid both rather has some what we would think of as mid 20th century types of chords. Unless you're into that kinda of thing, you may not want to get this CD. These aren't master works, but just nice little songs a composer might of written while taking a break between writing operas or symphonies.
Important American art songs performed by superb recitalists.......2000-05-30
This CD, a digital remastering of a recording originally released in 1962, is an extraordinary value for anyone interested in American art song, or simply in fine singing. I bought it because I wanted to hear Eleanor Steber's performance of Griffes's "Waikiki", which did not disappoint. But there are many other wonderful songs, all presented with great artistry. They range from the demanding complexity of Barber's "Nuvoletta" and Ives's "General William Booth Enters into Heaven" to the lyricism of the Ernst Bacon songs to texts by Emily Dickinson. The final song on the CD, John McCollum's performance of Henry Cowell's "The Donkey", is especially memorable; I recommend this version over the one on the Albany label's "Songs of Henry Cowell" CD (which I bought because my interest in Cowell's songs was raised by hearing "The Donkey").

This is a wonderful record. The music, mostly mournful in a typically Russian way, enchants ear and heart; the performances are matchless for vocal beauty, expressiveness, and projection of mood, atmosphere, and character, as well as for the incredible quality of the ensemble. DeGaetani, an unusually evocative, versatile artist who tragically died in 1988 at age 56, and Kalish, a splendid pianist equally at home as soloist and in collaboration with singers and instrumentalists, developed an uncanny degree of empathy during their 30-year partnership. Kalish's ability to alternate instantly between leading and supporting is fully displayed in these songs' prominent, often virtuosic piano parts. Together, they bring out the tenderness, simplicity, and sorrow of Rachmaninoff's and Tchaikovsky's moving lamentations and the innocent charm of Mussorgsky's "Nursery" songs without condescending to their childish humor. --Edith Eisler

Russian Intimacy.......2002-09-09
Another brilliant rendition by the extremely sensitive and artistic duo of De Gaetani and Kalish. Jan DeGaetani especially gives these Russian favourites her gorgeous trademark intimacy; leaving us with a refreshing treatment of Russian repetoire.

A HIGHLY TALENTED SINGER/SONGWRITER.......2006-09-03
This is an absolutely wonderful debut CD. It continues to resonate with this listner and remains in the CD player long after its initial purchase. While I've never seen her live, the CD retains the fresh immediate experience of a live show. Sawicki draws from several genres, but primarily relies on folk/bluegrass. At certain moments one can almost feel the toe-tapping crowd, the sounds of clinking beer bottles, and an artist having fun with her audience.
Sawicki has been compared to other artists such as Joni Mitchell and Gillian Welch. While these comparisons will generally provide an introduction to new listners, Sawicki is a unique and worthy artist in her own right. She has a beautiful voice that is extensively used in widely varying ways. Her voice will capture the listner, and is highly effective when standing on its own with minimal musical back-up.
Sawicki's music comes from a deeply personal place. It is her content that will ultimately stay with the listner. She is able to convey images, moods, and varying levels of emotion.
I am sure there will be much more coming from this artist.
