Customer Reviews:
Yes, a real country singer.......2007-01-04
I have always loved Chris Ledoux for singing about what country music should be, but I have found another favorite in Royal Wade Kimes. He has a real country sound and the subject of his songs is similar to that of Marty Robbins. I have even corresponded with Mr. Kimes via email; how many of your favorite artists have you had any contact with? Seems like a great guy!
A great, unheralded singer.......2006-11-07
Royal Wade Kimes is a real country singer, easily surpassing all the fluff on country radio. He sings old-fashioned, true-blue country music, and his voice is amazing and unique. If there were any justice in the music business, he'd be a star.
Real Music!.......2003-02-12
It's great to be able to tell who you're listening to, and to be able to tell that the good sound you hear is natural talent and not just computer enhanced, studio music. This is really good music and you can tell it comes from the heart.
DUET WITH GARTH BROOKS IS FABULOUS!.......2002-09-25
THIS CD IS THE MOST UNIQUE SOUND I HAVE HEARD IN AGES. THERE ARE SOME INCREDIBLE SONGS AND ROYAL WADE KIMES HAS A VOICE LIKE I'VE NEVER HEARD. IT'S REAL, FRESH AND INTERESTING. THE DUET WITH GARTH BROOKS IS A REALLY GREAT SONG AND THESE TWO SOUND GREAT TOGETHER. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND IT TO ANYONE WHO LIKES WESTERN MUSIC, KIMES OR BROOKS. IT'S ENTERTAINING!

Customer Reviews:
Not quite 'The Best of'.....................2007-05-19
Marty Robbins' best work was undoubtedly on the Columbia label and these 10 are from his short sojourn with MCA. The best song on here is 'Life' which is Marty's 'My Way' and is a Marty Robbins original of the highest standard. Personally, I like 'A Man And A Train' (from the Lee Marvin movie) which Marty really belts out and showed how Robbins could cross the tracks so effortlessly from Country to any other genre. All in all, not a bad album but there are many better ones by one of the greatest talents ever to grace Country music. Other tracks include 'Love Me', 'Crawling On My Knees', 'Shotgun Rider' and a tipping of Mary's stetson to 'The Father of Country Music' Jimmie Rodgers with 'Two Gun Daddy.' As a side note, I believe ther is still some unreleased material from his post MCA days on Columbia which hasn't seen the light of day yet.
Why?!
This is a very special album!.......2006-07-16
The title doesn't do justice to this album; it's much more than a standard "Best of..." album. These really are some of his top songs and several are very hard to find elsewhere. I've got 3 copies of this CD just to make sure I will always have it handy.
Some of the rare songs are "Walking Piece of Heaven," "Don't You Think," "20th Century Drifter." The wonderfully-performed song "Love Me" is especially difficult to find on other albums; it's the song that Jeanne Pruett (no relation to me) wrote for him and was always a favorite with the audiences when he sang it live on the Grand Ole Opry. Buy the CD for this song alone! The songs "Life," "A Man and a Train," "It takes Faith," are the kind of inspirational songs Marty did so well, and "Crawlin' On My Knees" is a very traditional Marty type of song. This CD also showcases what a top songwriter Marty was and how emotional he could be.
For those who loved, and still love, Marty's music, this is one of the best CDs you can buy.
Life.......2006-03-11
This is a great CD, it has one song, Life, I think it was the last before he died, it is hard to find on a CC, and it goes without saying all the other songs are great
Marty in the Soup Line.......2004-11-30
There are very few cases in which Marty Robbins did not deliver a good rendition of a song he took on, but the fact that one reviewer exalts the train song and another calls it the weakest part of the package tells a lot. Marty Robbins is on record as having said he made a mistake in leaving CBS (Columbia) Records and that his career had suffered. The songs here are the ones he recorded while NOT with Columbia. YOU figure it out.
Marty Robbins --.......2001-12-02
Significant this album is because it contains Marty's single "A Man and A Train", the title song for the 1973 motion picture "Emperor of the North", starring the late great Lee Marvin and Ernest Borgnine.
A very inspirational tune, it has been called "the best train song of the last 50 years". More contemporary than country, its simple lyrics can reach the youngest of listeners while its message of hope can warm the coldest of hearts. The strength of Marty's voice gives the song its true power of emotion, however.
It is unbelievable to me that this tune never turned into the hit it so rightfully deserved. Is it possible that the "Emperor" film being such a violent study with such a shocking ending kept the song from succeeding?
Tragic, because this tune has the ability to be a true legacy to Marty. If it was just suitably reissued and someone would give this tune a little airplay, the requests would come flooding in.
Not only does this CD contain the original recording, it features the "unknown" or "lost" third verse of A Man and A Train's four verses. Only verses one, two and four were actually used in the film, probably due to time constraints.
A treasure of a find!
Best of Marty Robbins features other inspirational tunes of Marty's "lesser-knowns" from the '70's, like "It Takes Faith" and "Life".
Marty unfortunately passed away on December 8, 1982, just 10 years after his "Emperor of the North" commission. He left behind, however, a lifetime of great recordings for generations to come.

its all good BUT.......2004-02-14
I have to say, sad for Marty no doubt, but even after hearing this album I still like his earlier (earliest?) works, 'gunfighter ballads', and 'more gunfighter ballads' a lot more. I'm shocked to see "Ballad of the Alamo" not on this collection. I suspect that i'm complaining about Mr Robbins not sticking to the one style that i loved but there it is. thats my 5c worth.
Marty "What a Story!" Robbins.......2002-02-25
Marty Robbins has always been the "different" kind a country singer; and that is why I love his sound! Whether out on "The Mesa" with his guitar (so to speak), or at a dive hittin' a Rockabilly rift; Marty's songs have so much life. This collection is the best total package I've seen. You get a little bit of everything; and if you love his variety pick this one up! "Don't Worry" may have been considered pop in its day, but I see it as a classic 50's ballad. "A White Sport Coat (With A Pink Carnation)" also thought to be "poppy" has that raw Rockabilly feel reminiscent of the early Sun Recordings. And "Big Iron" is the finest tune ever written about the Old West. The liner notes tell of his life in the business; an interesting story worthy of the title. Definately a collection worth checking out! Buy it with confidence. Enjoy!
Start Here...........1998-08-05
There are lots of Marty Robbins compilation CDs out there. With a 30-year recording career, he left behind a lot to compile. Unfortunately, a lot of it ain't worth the plastic -- or whatever CDs are made out of -- it's pressed on.
This CD features his best work over a 15 year span. The CD shows Robbins' incredible range, without wasting a lot of time on the MOR/Easy Listening material that punctuates his career. Here's where you can find "El Paso," "Singing the Blues", "White Sportscoat," "Devil Woman" and "Big Iron" all on one convenient -- and cheap -- CD.

Customer Reviews:
A good introduction to his music.......2006-11-17
Whether this British collection really is the best of Marty's music is doubtful but it does showcase the diversity of his music and everything here is of a high quality. Marty recorded several different types of music including rock'n'roll, cowboy music, classic pop ballads, mainstream country and Hawaiian music. All of them are represented here so you can easily make up your own mind what you like best.
In the fifties, he achieved some success in rock'n'roll, particularly with Singing the blues, which gave him an American top twenty hit. Guy Mitchell, a friend of Marty's, originally refused to record the song but did so once Marty's version had dropped out of the charts. Guy took the song to the very top of the American pop charts. In the UK, Guy's version had to compete with a local version by Tommy Steele but both versions went to number one, taking turns at the top. Marty's version didn't chart (maybe wasn't released as a single) in the UK.
Marty also had success in the American pop charts with pop ballads such as Story of my life. Again, none of these songs gave him a UK hit in the fifties though Story of my life gave Michael Holliday (an easy-listening pop singer from Liverpool) a number one UK hit. In the sixties, he had his biggest UK hit with Devil woman, which made the top five. Note - do not confuse this song with a completely different song of the same title by Cliff Richard.
Marty achieved his greatest success with cowboy songs, most notably El Paso, which gave him his first UK hit (it made the top twenty) as well as being a huge American hit. It is the song for which he is best remembered on both sides of the Atlantic.
Marty wrote and hit a country hit with You gave me a mountain, later covered by Elvis Presley. On this set, you get Marty's original as well as his covers of a couple of Elvis' songs (Love me tender, Can't help falling in love).
If you are new to Marty's music, this collection provides a little of everything he did including all four of his UK pop hits (El Paso, Big iron, Devil woman, Ruby Ann). Nevertheless, before you buy this, you might consider buying the double-CD Essential instead of this. It covers his career in much greater depth and includes all his important American pop and country hits.
