Ride with Bob is the new and improved sequel to Asleep at the Wheel's star-studded 1993 effort, Tribute to the Music of Bob Wills & the Texas Playboys. The playing behind the high-profile guest vocalists is hotter and looser this time, with plenty of solo space and the Wheel's Ray Benson assuming Wills's jovial ringleader role. Merle Haggard delivers a wild falsetto version of "St. Louis Blues" backed by the Squirrel Nut Zippers' horns, and Willie Nelson steps out with the Manhattan Transfer on "Going Away Party." Steve Wariner and Vince Gill trade fluid guitar licks on "Bob's Breakdown," Lyle Lovett and Shawn Colvin share a mic on "Faded Love," and the Dixie Chicks romp through "Roly Poly." All of Asleep at the Wheel's recordings have been tributes to Wills's Western-swing legacy in one way or another, but this is as close as they've come to distilling the timeless essence of the sound. --Rick Mitchell

Fiddles!!!.......2007-01-16
This a frandamtastic tribute to Bob Wills & the Original Texas Playboys, & Asleep at the Wheel does ol Bob Proudly. AATW shines clearly & the well known artists, such as Willie, Reba, Dixie Chicks, Merle Haggard do not out weigh this fine rendition. If you like fiddle/country swing, this one can't be beat.
Stands the test of time.......2006-03-26
I loved this CD when I bought it back in 2000. Played it countless times while commuting in my car, danced around the house to it on several occasions I won't say more about - and six years later I still enjoy listening to it! I could live without maybe three of the seventeen tracks, but overall I treasure this music.
What a collection of artists here: the Dixie Chicks, Willie Nelson, Clint Black, Lee Ann Womack, the Squirrel Nut Zippers, Reba McEntire, The Manhattan Transfer, Tim McGraw and of course Asleep at the Wheel. The best talent, peforming strong songs. Classic country, Texas swing - whatever you call it, it's music to enjoy for years. At least, it has been for me.
What Country Music Is Missing--this album is not.......2005-06-20
As a resident of the Nashville area and having heard all the stories from insiders about the misdirection, if not indirection, of the major country labels, all one needs to do is to listen to "Ride with Bob," and one is suddenly aware of what is missing in modern country music. True that the album is "Texas swing," but it is a lot closer to country music than what is pouring out of Nashville these days. While I am not a prude, it is nice to listen to music that does not pound away at sexual and alcohol themes. "Faded Love" with Shawn Colvin and Lyle Lovett is my special favorite--Colvin's voice is as good as it gets. And if Willie Nelson and Manhattan Transfer don't convince you to play "Going Away Party" at your funeral,
your weren't listening.
The best they've ever done !.......2003-11-17
This is the pinnacle of Texas Swing! They add variety by adding cameos by other artists, with the ATW band providing instrumentals to the visiting star's vocals, and it works sooo well! I never get tired of listening to this album because it's not one of those that just drones on with the same tempo and style in each track - it has tremendous variety.
Asleep At The Wheel has produced some very good albums, but this is the best I've heard. Very glad I bought it.
Second great tribute to the king of western swing.......2003-09-06
Ray Benson and the other members of Asleep at the Wheel had never made any secret of the fact that Bob Wills was their biggest influence, but they emphasized the point by recording two tribute albums in the nineties devoted entirely to his music, of which this is the second. Both albums featured a star-studded line-up of guests.
Bob's best and most famous song is Faded love, though the song is generally associated with Patsy Cline who made it her own. Here Shawn Colvin and Lyle Lovett sing it as a duet and it works very well this way.
Among my other favorite tracks here are Roly Poly (with the Dixie Chicks), Heart to heart talk (with Lee Ann Womack), You're from Texas (with Tracy Byrd), Right or wrong (with Reba McEntire) and Going away party (with Willie Nelson and the Manhattan Transfer).
Another interesting track is Maiden's prayer featuring the Squirrel nut zippers - surely the least well-known guests here - I'd never heard of them till I heard them here. The version here is not based on Bob's standard recording but on a rare alternate version that Bob recorded with an arrangement reminiscent of Glenn Miller. The vocalist on this track is Katherine Whalen, who as an interesting voice that suits the song well.
All the tracks here are brilliant. Your favorites may be different from mine, but if you like real country music that swings, Texas style, this is for you.

Great Christmas Companion.......2007-01-19
I originally bought this item because I love the song "Mary Did You Know?" Natalie Cole's voice only made it that much more enjoyable. The best surprise on the CD was a duet with her father. I really love the sound of their two voices together.
A Natalie Cole Christmas.......2006-11-06
I enjoyed Ms. Cole's CD. I have always listened to her father's CD during the holidays and now I can listen to hers too. It was quite enjoyable.
Classy performance from a Classy woman.......2005-12-02
Natalie Cole is a beautiful person and I've long admired her musical work. This Christmas album is no exception. Her silky but strong voice really serves her and us well in songs like "My Grown-Up Christmas List", "Sweet Little Jesus Boy", and "The Christmas Song" which she, thanks to modern technology, sings with her father Nat King Cole. While I don't usually don't care for the jazzed up or modernized versions of traditional Christmas songs I have to admit that Natalie really turned out a nice piece of work with her upbeat version of "Sleigh Ride".
The London Symphony Orchestra really compliments Natalie's voice. Songs like "Hark the Herald Angels Sing" and "Christmas Waltz" are two songs in which the Symphony stands out.
Lastly, Natalie Cole has selected songs that focus on the actual Christmas story and or on the spirit of good well that are part of the birth of Christ. She hasn't tried to reinvent any of these songs or alter the arrangement to the point that they are no longer recognizable. She has used her talent to provide listeners with beautiful vocalizations of these Christmas songs and the London Symphony Orchestra for the beautiful arrangements, music and background vocals.
Natalie may not be Nat , but she is certainly VERY GOOD!.......1999-12-11
This album is softer, more mellow then her best-selling "Holly and Ivy." With the strong support of the London Symphony Orchestra, Ms. Cole shows several facets of herself as a singer. Natalie can be attacked, for lacking the edge, the individuality that any singer (ecspecially a "Jazz Singer") needs to set themselves apart from the others. Yet one can not deny that Ms. Cole has a very strong musical ear, a solid voice, and a warmth that is all her own! Yet Ms. Cole is not a "Jazz Singer," she would be best described as a "Pop/Jazz Singer." The Magic of Christmas is certainly a Pop/Jazz album. Her voice is soft like silk, and yet earthy-strong and soaring! She is gifted. Natalie not only listened to music as a child, she absorbed the music of her father, Louie, Ella, Aretha, etc.. into the fabric of who she is. Would I like Natalie to be more authentic, less pleasing and sweet, less perfect, a "JAZZ SINGER." Well, sure! I am a huge jazz vocal fan. Yet is that who she is? Can she sing a song like Sarah or Carmen? Perhaps not. Perhaps as she gets older, and is truly satisfied with her POPular success she will do less "MOR" music..perhaps not. All I know is, her holiday album is filled with great singing, excellent musicians and arrangers. It is a mellow Natalie, bringing in the holdiays with such class that even Nat himself would be proud of. The critic above is correct, Natalie has added yet another piece to the greatness of the Cole legacy. A legacy that both father and daughter share. Lets remember...Natalie has survived in the industry since the year of my bith-1975. That is close to 25 years folks, I am sorry, but her father didn't make that happen. Natalie a great many of her supporters made that happen.
Magical.......1999-12-07
Once again, Ms. Cole displays class and sophistication on her new Christmas album. Nobody can do to a song what this lady does. I have said it before and I will say it again. Natalie is in a class all by herself. Her voice is so clear, so sweet, so strong. What else is there to say. A great voice with great musicians, how can you go wrong.

Sound approach to oriental bike ride for charity - Robert McMillen.......2005-12-02
It's easy to see how the beautiful landscapes of China could awaken the creative spirit in you, but singer/songwriter Raymond McCullough did it the hard way. In October 1999, Raymond went on the Mencap China Bike Ride - despite not having been on a bike for 29 years!
"I thought I'd never do it," he said, "The journey was 444 kilometres long over four-and-a-half days. On the first day we did 40 miles instead of 40 km which was tough, but the following morning, we woke up in this beautiful hotel with the sun shining down on the pomegranate trees, and I had a shower, put the shorts on and thought, `I can do this'. By the third day I had caught up on the lead riders," says Raymond with obvious pride.
The scenery was breathtaking, he recalled, but going up 18 hairpin bends to get the views wasn't all fun!
Even on the flight to Beijing, though, there was a song brewing in Ray's imagination. "Making our way over the Mongolian mountains, about six in the morning, I got this wee tune, three chords, in my head, and that became the chorus of `Ballad of Beijing'.
In the second week, whever I went I heard this particular tune played by three percussionists and I incorporated that into the song as well."
The `Ballad of Beijing' can be found on `The great China Bike Ride', a mini-album with five other songs from Ray's vast repertoire.
`Smoke goes up' is a lovely song about Ireland's smell of turf, which Ray wrote on a journey home from Cork through Ireland's towns and villages. "The smoke goes up, the rain comes down," is an image many will find familiar!
`1989' is about the fall of the Berlin Wall and there is a lovely instrumental called, `Ar tir seo aguinne (Our Land)'.

Customer Reviews:
a must have for great drumming.......2004-04-21
I got this cd simply becaue Vinnie Colaiuta is playing on it. The best surprise was the rest of the musicians and the treatment of each one of the songs. The playing is tops. If you want to hear jazz played well, buy this disc. If you are a drummer, listen to the master and he, once again, applies his tradmark 'Vinnie stuff' with the other great talents. Randy Waldman is an unsung player. Listen for yourself.
Great Jazz.......2000-05-03
Blending jazz and classical music into a suberb hybrid form--can't wait for the sequel!
Absolutely fantastic jazz performances. Truly unique........1998-12-19
"Wigged Out" is the most original and interesting jazz CD I have ever had the pleasure to hear. The performances by the artists involved were amazing, as were the flawless arrangements. It is a must-have collection of virtuoso performances, especially the piano solos by Randy Waldman and drum solos by Vinnie Colaiuta. Brilliant CD!
Excellent jazz for people with "big ears" and an open mind.......1998-12-11
"Wigged Out" is not cocktail music but an interesting mix of excellent arrangements and outstanding musicians. This album is for people who have spent a great deal of time listening to Jazz and who have a trained ear. Some of the arrangements are silly but this doesn't take away from the high level of performing. Highly Recommended
Don't Miss This One!!!.......1998-09-14
I have known and worked with Randy over a period of many years and his genius on the piano and wonderful arrangements never cease to amaze me. His new CD "Wigged Out" is a fine example of his great work. To sit with Randy and watch him effortlessly play and compose his material is a real treat. Sometimes he'll tell you jokes while playing "Flight Of The Bumble Bee" and not miss a note....and that's while he's playing trumpet. Seriously, you can experience his talents with just one listen to this brilliant CD.....but you'll want to listen again and again......so you'll have to buy it!
