sometimes the greatest music gets lost.......2006-09-23
in the mid seventies, this singer and her eclectic band kept me and my 'hipper-than-thou' music friends entertained bigtime. an album that truly escaped, it may be the greatest record of 1977, or 1976 if you were lucky enough to get a shortlived copy on buddah, before a warner music version appeared out of nowhere. Cathy reminds one of Janis, Bette, and yeah a young ethel merman (don't let that reference freak you out). this album is magic, as the best music is.

Album Description
The debut record from North Carolina's the Blue Rags is a party of an album, a rollicking good time from a bunch of Southern boys with influences that range from ragtime to punk. From the opening notes of "Be My Salty Dog," these fellas make it clear that they know their musical history as well as they know how to write a timeless hook. Swelling with throaty vocals, the plunk of a stand-up bass, bluegrass guitars, and saloon-style piano playing, Rag-n-Roll feels uncommonly genuine, like serious musicians having the drunken time of their lives. Juggling styles from swing music to the upbeat lament of "Bourgeois Blues," there is nary a relaxing moment over the course of the band's 13 unrelenting hyper-stomps. Even the cover of "I Got Rhythm" that closes out the record sounds like a legitimate relic of an era past, and a few pleasing liberties are taken that allow the band members to show off their abilities on their respective instruments. While this debut was a bit overlooked as far as mainstream media went, its infectious energy still managed to capture the hearts of those lucky enough to hear it. The Blue Rags never really managed to equal this power on future recordings, but as their live show attested, the music was in them and the record is no fluke.

Smokin'.......2001-11-11
I've had the pleasure of seeing these guys perform live and ho man-- they are awesome! They play with a lot of energy and it comes out on their debut album. It's one of those rare instances where a band sounds just as good live as they do in a studio, if not better. It's pure and genuine foot-stompin, head-bobbin' music. Think Scott Joplin and Woody Guthrie-- refreshing!
THEY AREN'T POP OR ROCK MUSIC........1999-02-23
This is a perfect cd, but that's not the point of my review. If you go to the bottom of this page, you will see that these people at Amazon.Com catogorize this cd as COUNTRY, ALTERNATIVE, INDIE, AND PUNK, POP, ROCK. Well, guys, this is for you: YOU'D BETTER CHANGE THAT SOON, GUYS, BECAUSE THEY ARE ONLY COUNTRY AND BLUES MUSIC, GUYS. THEY AREN'T ANYTHING ELSE...ANYTHING ELSE AT ALL. Still, this is a perfect album and I reccommend it to any COUNTRY AND/OR BLUES FAN. (GUYS!) Thank you for reading my review. Good-Bye!!
It's OKAY to dance like a backwater fool!.......1999-01-19
That's what this CD will teach you. The Blue Rags are a ragtag five-some of pure talent from North Carolina. Seeing them play live will supplement this CD -- you'll share their laid-back energy and musical synergy. These boys know how to lay down some punchy, twangy grooves that will have you tapping your toes all the way home. Some of the highlights of this album include "Be My Salty Dog," "Sister Kate" and a spirited version of the Gershwin classic "I Got Rhythm." Two who stand out are Jake Hollifield, with his wholesome vocals and keyboard riffs, and Bill Reynolds, who plucks a mean standup bass. You'd be doing yourself and your music collection a favor to buy this CD. Chances are, there's nothing like it on your shelves as of yet. You won't be sorry!

Album Description
Mark Donato's second album, The Old Joy, will move into your apartment and grow up with you like a lost sibling.
If this world didn't stink out loud, Mark Donato would be a household name, or would at least attract the attention of folks who flock to writer/performers like Randy Newman, Loudon Wainwright, or Ray Davies. Those are some approximate but inadequate reference points for pigeonholing the artist that John Flansburgh of They Might Be Giants has called "one of the best songwriters around."
And that's ignoring his voice, an incredibly expressive sort of Richard Manuel-ish soulful yelp that always seems to go where you least expect it.
Customer Reviews:
Obscenely original.......2001-09-04
I stumbled on this record because of the obscure and kind of brilliant operation called Rag and Bone Shop, and discovered another obscure and brilliant little nugget with this one. (I'm also pretty sure this is the guy who was the drummer on John Linnell's solo record, State Songs.) Donato's voice is a cross between Rick Danko and someone else from the sixties whose name escapes me now. The words are weird and heartbreaking. The melodies are kind of indescribable, but make me think a little of Elliott Smith and Elvis Costello. "Biohazard" is ridiculously catchy and if people actually had taste out there, would be an instant hit. Another song, "My Purple Heart" seems to be about impotence and is kind of hilarious and terrifying at the same time. I'm already waiting for this guy to come to Chapel Hill sometime soon, but I wonder if he has the money to tour.
