Editorial Reviews
Amazon.com essential recording
Scud Mountain Boys proves there's more to Massachusetts than Boston. In fact, the band's aptly titled 1996 release Massachusetts is a stylistic drive through rural New England. Leaning on crisp, countrified melodies and championing a number variations on lonely boy blues, Scud Mountain Boys finds more in common with Johnny Cash than urban thrash. Still, it doesn't quite feel right aligning them with the ensemble of No Depression bands that have taken up the banner of alternative country. On Massachusetts, Scud Mountain Boys find a tension that belongs more uniquely to life in the northern states, an urban sophistication with heartland simplicity--or at least a longing for such a combination. --Nick Heil

Album Description
Brilliantly captures the exhilaration of Seeger's concert experience. With extraordinary talent, Seeger addresses salient social issues--his trademark for over 50 years--in song: If I Had a Hammer, Greensleeves, and We Shall Not be Moved. The complete concert of 41 songs was recorded live in Sanders Theatre at Harvard University and illuminates the skill of a master performer and the dedication of an enduring political activist. "...a reminder of the virtues and aesthetics that make [folk music] such an enduring medium." -- Dirty Linen

The Best.......1998-09-07
Pete is a gift to us, one that will be certainly lost when he is gone. I got to see Pete and Arlo in concert and it was the best concert I've been to (including rock/pop stuff). This album is consumate Pete because he gets the crowd singing like a choir. There is no finer Seeger album than this. Pete's autographed picture hangs in my office and it is a treasure as is he.

Wipeout jams! Great high-energy release.......2007-04-13
This is a great high-energy release from 98. The band are playing extremely well, and they move in and out of wipeout seamlessly. The first set features a great Carini and some nice jamming segues. The second set, however, is inspired. Wipeout reappears throughout the set, emerging in and between songs, and the band even begin to play around with Wipeout itself. Great Mike's Song. One of the best all-out rock and roll releases of the Live Phish series.
KILLER SETLIST.......2006-07-22
What do you get when you hear a Phish concert setlist that has Runaway Jim, Reba, Run Like an Antelope, Mike's-Hydrogen-Groove, Birds of a Feather, Chalkdust Torture, and Carini? Many Phans including myself wouldn't suggest a better choice of songs than what was played on November 27th, 1998. Let's not forget the other highlights of the evening, including sporadic moments of "Wipeout" that occur throughout the show. Other than Volume 4, this is by far the best of the series. Not only is the setlist incredible, but the way they are played stands out as well. I have never heard better live versions than most of the songs played in this show, particularly "Reba". GREAT SHOW... BUY IT
Beyond Grateful Dead.......2006-02-20
This review is to cast doubt on a previous review. This music leaves the Grateful Dead in the past where they belong. I love the fact they sound different. I did the entire dead tour in 1994 and loved every minute of it but they just weren't as tallented as Phish. Sorry but phish's keyboard solos simply leave all the dead keyboard players in the dust including Bruce Wannabe Hornsby. This show gives you a nice place to start or phish heads the piece of mind now that they are now releasing quality shows. If you compare this to music of the same genre this will undoubtably get a 5. Buy it here or get the flacs directly from phish but do it today.
Runaway Jams.......2003-05-02
I agree with most of the reviewers below. The Wipeout>Chalkdust>Mirror in the Bathroom>.... jam is a spectacular start to an amazing 2nd set. The first set has its moments too. Vultures is great. So is Reba and Ya Mar and Carini.
Nobody has mentioned the Runaway Jim so far so I had to comment. It's the only version available so far in the Live Phish series. I am partial to this song perhaps because it was the first Phish song I ever heard (live and in person only 10 ft away from the band in a small college town bar in Minnesota back in '91). I had no idea who Phish were when my friend persuaded me to go see them but they came on and started with Runaway Jim and I've been a huge fan ever since even if I haven't made it to that many concerts or followed every development over the years (it's hard to when you're living abroad). But beyond my personal connection with the song, I think it's objectively a great song/jam. Why is it not more regularly featured? The version on this CD is a little down tempo than the original version I heard in '91 but it's still has great solos and a nice groove.
far away from brilliant!.......2002-11-28
I do not want to offend anybody, but since most people reviewing this album are massive phish-fans, you maybe want to hear the opinion of a "ordinary listener". As a natural born deadhead, I'm grateful for every jam-band out there and phish definitely is one of the best in this genre. Trey Anastasio is a very fine guitar-player and like on all live phish records, there is some solid jamming on this one. But to be honest, the songs are mostly... they are not much more than vehicles for the jams, the lyrics are rather simpleminded and the melodies shallow. The worst of all is the piano, sounds like third class bar-jazz in fancy restaurants. Anyway, once the band takes off, it's a fun record.

Customer Reviews:
My favorite show.......2001-12-07
Some of you may have read my review for the Lisbon, Portugal show, and at the time, I felt that show was the best on the tour, but I realize now how foolish that claim was. I now own 16 of the bootlegs, and no its not many, nowhere near bcramer520's all 72, but I love Pearl Jam and know a good show when I hear one (regardless of my Lisbon review).
I love this show because of the stellar setlist and the fact that Mike is very on and very pronounced tonight. There's no missing his solos like in some shows. Not only that, but Jeff is also very noticeable and Matt is just killing the drums. Breakerfall is a prime example, tonight's version being one of the heaviest and most raw versions on the tour, with a great solo. God's Dice makes a surprise enterance and the timing is actually on, and once again sounds very well. One of my favorite sections of this show is the Greivance, Untitled, MFC, Habit line up which proves very effective. Matt is absolutely amazing tonight. The pace of the whole show is faster than normal, and Matt is smashing those cymbals like there's no tomorrow. The bridge in Greivance is one of my favorites (second only to Tampa, in which you can actually here Stone's octave run) of the tour. Untitled is such a cool little improv, and the best part about it is that it's never the same as another night's. Eddie always changes the lyrics, and tonight a whole extra verse is thrown in making it a very special extended version. This song is really just an intro to MFC and tonight, MFC is in it's true rocking form. Then Habit is played in a pretty cool way. Either Stone or Mike (probably Stone) begins playing, and after playing the intro twice, you can hear another guitar slide and all the sudden Mike joins in. It sounds really cool, and tonight's line is "Speaking as a child who knew who John Havelcheck (sp?) was."
Betterman is the highlight of the first CD. Regardless of the fact that Eddie messes up and has to mumble here and there, the fans are privy to a real treat tonight. Save it for Later, the Who/Pete Townshend song is tagged on the end, making this one of the best versions of Betterman ever. The song is just absolutely amazing and is worth the price of the CD alone.
Disc two begins with a scorching version of Insignificance and Porch. While the disc also provides amazing versions of Evolution, Once and RVM, the true gem of the whole show is the Yellow Ledbetter/F*ckin' Up combo at the end. First, its rare enough that YL didn't close the show (I believe this only happened 3 times) but the way the songs combine to one is amazing. Mike's solo just rocks, and then at the end just turns into a loud and high feedback whine and all of the sudden, Matt starts that ominous drum intro. F*ckin' Up is an awesome version too, fast and heavy.
An absolutely amazing show, with the band all on fire and in a fast paced mood.
A Few Problems, but PJ Rocks Boss-town.......2001-11-07
Disclaimer: Owner of all 72 official PJ bootlegs. This show, which is the first of two nights in Boston, can be considered one of the most enthusiastic and fun-loving gigs in the bootleg series. The band is clearly having a good time, they're having a lot of fun with the crowd, and the crowd returns the favor. Perhaps everybody was psyched by the dancing cow in the audience (acknowledged by Eddie Vedder in the intro to "Crazy Mary"). Eddie's cover of Little Steven Van Zandt's "I Am a Patriot" in the encore really pleases the locals, and he adds some humorous improv to the lyrics. But even with all the fun and good times, this evening is not an especially good musical performance by the band. Eddie is forgetting lyrics all over the place, especially in "Even Flow" and "Betterman," and he doesn't even try to improvise, but just adds some lazy mumbling instead. The band bungles the beginning of "Sleight of Hand" and have to stop and start over again, and the rarely-performed "Mankind" (with a jovial Stone Gossard on vocals) is a train wreck, mostly because Mike McCready forgets most of his lines in the song. So this particular bootleg is a little hard to judge. If you're looking for one in which the band is talkative, energetic, and everyone is having a roaring good time, then this one is for you. But if you're looking for a slamming display of musicianship by one of the world's top rock bands, well this ain't it.
liveliest crowd.......2001-06-19
I enjoy listening to the concert recorded on this CD by PEARL JAM. Their Boston show of 29 August 2000 must have been an enthralling experience. The connection between Pearl Jam and the crowd is palpable. Pearl Jam blasts through the first seven titles with intense energy and commitment. After this non-stop assault, Mr Vedder addresses the raucous audience. He reflects that they are coming "to terms with the fact we've been together 10 years." The band then picks up to complete a fantastic, heartfelt performance. At the encore, Mr Vedder flatters the fans with the complement that they are "the liveliest crowd played to since Europe." Followed by an unpaid political announcement concerning the upcoming US Presidential Elections which segues nicely into a cover of Mr Steve Van Zandt's "Patriot". Mr Vedder introduces a boyfriend to the song with tongue in cheek. Not to be outdone, Mr McCready admits to a mistake in one of the previous songs (ardent fans will prove their metal by finding it). To repent for his sin, he punishes the crowd with "mankind". The last song is sung with exceptional gusto. If you are interested in great live events, this CD will interest you.
Awesome Show!.......2001-04-13
I was at both Boston shows. They both were incredible and unique in their own respect. I just so happen to have preferred the 1st show (8/29). The covers were amazing and complemented the rest of their set nicely. The band seems to be in good spirits and they put on one helluva show. Highly recommend picking this one up!
PJ in Beantown.......2001-04-02
Pearl Jam's opening date in Boston contains some excellent cover songs including "Soldier Of Love", a rousing " F@#!#!n' Up" and an interesting and great cover of Little Steven's "I Am A Patriot". The band is tight and Eddie Vedder is in fine vocal form. The show isn't the best from the tour, but the covers elevate it.

Good, Inexpensive Barber.......2003-07-20
This is a good collection of the compositions of two of the best 20th Century American Composers, Samuel Barber and Howard Hanson. Barber, best known for his Adagio for Strings (recognized by most as the haunting piece featured in the movie Platoon), also wrote two Symphonies, an excellent Piano Concerto and various works for Orchestra, all featured here on this title. Hanson, a first rate conductor as well as a composer (see my reviews of his Mercury Living Presence titles), is only represented on this collection by his Concerto for Piano and Orchestra, despite the fact he wrote numerous Symphonies. Despite the fact that the performances presented here are enjoyable, my first choices for CDs of Barber's music would have to be the EMI Double Forte with Leonard Slatkin, and an amazing disc of mostly lesser-known works by the late Thomas Schippers on Sony Masterworks Heritage. Of course, Barber's Adagio is seemingly omnipresent and can be had on a plethora of discs; for Hanson I would go straight to the source and hear him conduct his own music. However, all things considered, this set is hard to beat at its budget price.

its playing live again.......2006-08-15
A mere two years after the (rather short but) excellent live outing "Derringer Live", on the heels of the band Derringers albums "Derringer" and "Sweet Evil", Rick Derringer comes up with another showstomper under the monniker "Derringer" again, which suggests being the name of the band but is unsure whether at that time that band still existed. After the 3 aforementioned albums that band at least dissolved and Rick Derringer picked up his solo-carriere. He then released the studio LP "If I weren't so romantic I'd shoot you" from which a few songs are culled in this radio broadcasted concert, on which only bassplayer Kenny Aaronson from the now defunct band is present, together with 2 new players on guitar and drums. Where the aforementioned "Live" was a real hard rockalbum, with plenty of guitarsoloing, this latter album is more straigth, run of the mill. Some oldies are present ("Let me in", "Teenage Love Affair", "Beyond the Universe" and of course the showstopper "Rock and Roll, Hoochie Koo", including excerpt from the Kinks' "You really got me" - that is long before Van Halen repeated the trick - are also on 1976 "Live"), "Roll with me" dates from his time with Johnny Winter, together with new songs, one penned and mainly performed by the rythm-section, another by Warren Zevon. Anyway, Derringer, being the sole musician or being the new band, surely could play a steaming liveset with lots of guitars throwed in. Even if half of this setlist is already recorded live shortly before it is enjoyable to listen to.
This is what you call LIVE!.......2004-08-19
Have you ever wondered what a great rock concert would sould like captured on CD? Well pick this up and you will find out in spades!!!!!!!!
The wild guitar rock never stops on this album.
It opens with a Derringer standard Let Me In. Eventually you are led to Midnight Road, one of Rick's best songs and it sounds even better here live than it did on the studio album.
Plus check out Roll With Me.The intensity is so hot you'll be calling the fire dept.!!!!!!!
Derringer Rocks.......2003-09-02
Taken during one of Derringer's best periods. This performance is not with one of his best lineups, but is definately one of his best song lists. If you appreciate "If I weren't so romantic...", You'll love the rare live versions from that Album here. Would rate the overall CD higher, but the other tunes are better on other compilations.
DERRINGER ROCKS!!.......2002-06-24
EXCELLENT LIVE CD BY GUITAR GOD RICK DERRINGER. ALTHOUGH THIS LINEUP IS NOT THE ORIGINAL AND BEST DERRINGER LINEUP, MYRON GROMBACHER ON DRUMS AND NEIL GERALDO ON GUITAR AND KEYBOARDS (AND BOTH OF PAT BENETAR FAME) DO MORE THAN A CAPABLE JOB OF FILLING IN FOR THE DEPARTED VINNY APPICE (DRUMS) AND DANNY JOHNSON (GUITAR). ONE OF THE BEST THINGS ABOUT THIS CD IS YOU GET 5 TRACKS FROM THE VERY HARD TO FIND ON CD "IF I WEREN'T SO ROMANTIC, I'D SHOOT YOU", AS WELL AS THE USUAL DERRINGER GEMS.
A MUST OWN FOR ANY AND ALL RICK DERRINGER FANS. BANDS JUST DON'T PLAY LIKE THIS ANYMORE.
Essential Listening For All Derringer Fanatics.......2000-03-30
Derringer fans who have longed for his LP "If I Weren't SoRomantic, I'd Shoot You" on CD now have a partial reason tosmile. Most of the material from that LP is performed live on this CD. It's a shame Rick didn't do 'Monomania' in this set. Get this while you can.

Product Description
VESPERIA, which was commissioned specifically for vespers service at the Holliston church, is divided into four parts of gracious & serene electronic ambience. The disc concludes with a scored reading of a poem by Lisa Louise Indish which perfectly sums up the inspirational tone of Vesperia. The music transcends religious sectarianism, however, and is intended as a soundtrack for anyone interested in the journey inward and the power of thought. It was directly inspired by the writings of Ernest Holmes, Florence Shinn and Raymond Holliwell.

THE BEST.......2006-05-20
Richard Bone has in recent years established himself as one of the leading exponents of Ambient music.
This, his latest work, is quite possibly one of his best collections of work in this field - gentle, soulful, soothing, beautiful - a worthy purchase if this is your 'cup of tea'.
Send the kids up to bed, draw the curtains, dim the lights, light a candle and perhaps and some incense too...and relax.

--Nick Heil
Customer Reviews:
My favorite album.......2006-09-29
The sense of agony in Joe Pernice's music is so powerful that it makes me want to be depressed myself. This isn't saying that I don't want to listen to it. On the contrary, I find myself mesmerized by the Scud Mountain Boys.
I admit, it took me some time to get into these guys. But I have owned this album for a couple of years now and, at this point, I am still listening to it and finding more and more to like.
Overall, the album is worth your time and will keep your listening for years.
If you can, get the "Early Years" which include such amazing songs as "Freight of Fire" and "Fiery Coffin".
No Depression? Yes Depression!.......2003-04-08
Scud Mountain Boys make husky, downbeat alt country, with predictably heartfelt lyrics and surprisingly breathy vocals. The album definitely harks back to the laid back country-softrock of the seventies. Not horrible, but not exactly exciting. Standout is `Cigarette Sandwich" which is the only song on the album that varies the mood or the sound, however minimally. A bit of a yawn, really. I'd stick with the Jayhawks.
Amazing graceful pathos.......2002-11-10
I'm bummed out to think that it took me this long to find out about these guys. And to think I could've been swillin' Leinies in the heart of darkness that is Winter in the Midwest, listening to the SCB and feelin' bad. Unfortunately I moved out of state and quit drinking, but that's allright! because Joe Pernice and the rest of the Boys deliver enough drunken pathos to go around. The ambience, a tangled web of melodies and jangling strings and mellow tones, lumbers and weaves throughout fourteen amazing songs. This is one of those cds that I instantly loved and will always be a jewel in my collection of tunes.
Grab a Pabst and throw this on when you're feeling low.......2002-03-06
That's not to say this album will lift your spirits or anything. It's filled with self-deprecating and self-loathing, a little bit of existential dread, and a whole lot of desperation. But as we all know, when you're feeling a little low, you don't want to hear the Beastie Boys shouting on Paul's Boutique or anything. You want to listen to something where the artist is going to say hey, you have it pretty bad, but I just might have it worse. And it helps if they tell you their tales of woe in a poetic and beautifully melodic way, which is exactly what Joe Pernice and co. do on Massachusetts. To be honest, I picked this up without listening to it and didn't know what to expect. You look at the name 'Scud Mountain Boys' and you think it might be something closer to the country rock of the Yayhoos or the punk-country hybrid of Uncle Tupelo. And while this was advertised as falling into the 'alt-country' genre, it only has a slight country music tinge to it. It's mostly the sound of Joe Pernice, and it's a beautiful thing.
Underrated and Overlooked.......2002-01-17
It's funny how the best albums are the ones you just stumble upon. I discovered Massachusetts just by reading an article on Joe Pernice. I took a chance on the album from the state i'm from and i'm glad i did. Be forwarned: This is not the type of record you put on in the car and bob your head to. This is an introspective record. This is a sit along at home and contemplate life record. Very quiet, beautiful melodies and harmonies combine to make some of the best melencoly music certianly of 1996 and probably of the 1990's alltogether. And the best part of it is it can be yours alone. So few people know of Scud Mountain Boys and this will defentely never be mainstream, you can have this record all for you own when you decide to sit home some night and "contemplate life".
