Customer Reviews:
One of Weill's best American scores!.......2005-10-16
`Lost in the Stars' and `Johnny Johnson' are two Broadway shows scored by Kurt Weill in collaboration with Maxwell Anderson and Paul Green respectively for the librettos, both in English. Both are distinguished works and both were, I believe, fairly popular when they were first performed. What these two works have in common is that they are both works aimed at our social conscience.
`Johnny Johnson' is a mildly anti-war play dealing with America's entering the First World War, written in the mid 1930s, when Germany was already uncomfortable for Jews, but not yet on the brink of precipitating World War II. What is most interesting to me about the libretto is the reluctance of the principle character, Johnny, to enlist in the army, while his fiancée (contrary to many famous antiwar works of the past), is all in favor of his enlisting and threatens to break their engagement if he does not enlist. As a work of art, I believe the work is more interesting as a milepost in American antiwar sentiments than as an important artistic work for either the composer or the lyricist. To my ear, there is not a single song from this work that finds its way into the repertoire of balladeers. This is from a composer who has given us `September Song', `Speak Low', `Lost in the Stars', `Saga of Jenny', and `Lonely House', not to mention all the great songs from his German works such as `Mack the Knife' and `Pirate Jenny'. On top of this, there is my feeling that much of the instrumental music sounds very similar to earlier German works, especially `Mahagonny'.
`Lost in the Stars' is based on Alan Paton's novel, `Cry, the Beloved Country' and was written after World War II, in 1948-1949, and has much of the musical interest of what is missing from `Johnny Johnson'. Throughout the play, the instrumental music is much less similar to earlier Weill works and all songs seem stronger. At least two of these songs, `Lost in the Stars', `Trouble Man' and `Stay Well' are often performed by Lotte Lenya and other vocalists. While it may be pushing it a bit, this work seems almost as strong as Gershwin's `Porgy and Bess'.
I bought both because I am a big fan of Kurt Weill's music, and I would recommend both recordings to any and all Weill enthusiasts, especially as both have extensive notes and complete librettos. But, to the person mostly interested in Broadway in general, I would recommend only `Lost in the Stars'.
I will say that the performances of both vocalists and orchestra are excellent on both; however the vocalists on `Lost in the Stars' seem to give just a little extra, possibly because their material is just a bit more substantial.
I love it!!.......2002-07-12
It is so easy to get some of these songs in your head...I love this soundtrack..
Can we get someone to put this label back in stock?.......1999-12-28
With great hope in the powerful amazon.com's Jeff Bezos, the person of the year by Time magazine, we wish you can urge someone to put this title back into circulation! I have sung the piece "Lost in the Stars" and was drawn by the wonderful music and intriguing lyrics. Is there a way to locate the music score of the soundtrack?
Powerful performance,historically significant.......1999-06-04
After 50 years the little snippet heard on this site brings back the original emotions.I would love to purchase this recording in any format. The original performance, a life-changing event for me as a young girl, is recaptured.
"THE MOST MOVING MUSIC AND SACRIFICE OF A NATION.......1999-06-01
I saw the oringinal Musical "Lost in the Stars", and have the 33 album. Would love to have a CD to play on my "modern" equipment. When Todd Duncan was asked to do the part of the "Efunsdi", he read the part and broke an existing contract to go into rehearsal. He said "I have to do this for my people." I was enthralled at the libretto and zest of the choreography. So when I hear the music I am taken right back to the Opera stage and see and hear the glorious presentation. Please put it back into circulation, or if someone out there has a copy (cd) I would love to talk to you about it. CT

Excellent recording........2006-07-04
It doesn't get much better than this. This ensemble is the English counterpart to the Venice Baroque Orchestra. Its sound is luxurious and the performance is very much on the cutting edge of the historical approach of performance. Very nice quick tempi, excellent ornamentation of the violin parts, you can't miss with this one.

Nothing but hits.......2001-01-31
As with their first collection of label highlights, Hyperion's new two-disc collection provides a broad sampling of their exceptional catalogue and performers. Particularly rewarding are the selections from Beethoven (Scherzo from String Trio in C minor, op 9 no 3, performed by the Leopold Trio) and Thomas Tallis (Salvator mundi I, performed by the Winchester Cathedral Choir), but experienced and novice listeners alike will find much to enjoy on these discs. It's also a good value--more than 2 1/2 hours of music for less than $10.

Little known delights.......2003-12-07
This set is an adventure providing many wonderful discoveries. The C minor Mass K.427, the Coronation Mass, the Spatzenmesse, the Credomesse, the Vesperae solennes de confessore K.339, the Litanies Lauretanae and "de venerabili altaris sacramento", the Kyrie K.341--these are all vintage Mozart. The only disappointment is the Requiem, which lacks the clarity and intensity of Hogwood's.
Excellent recordings, maybe a bit much for some..........2001-02-12
I found the overall quality of the recordings and the artists to be consistently very good. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend this collection based on the quality of the production--this is a great way to get a complete collection of Mozart's chorals at one shot.
Having said that, it's obviously going to be a bit repetitive; it is overkill for the average listener. Unless you're certain you really want the complete collection, buying a few individual recordings will be more cost-effective. I don't regret the purchase, but I think it all depends on your level of interest.
Music to pray by.......2000-11-09
I'm a non-musician, but have listened to a lot of Mozart. I was cataloging books at my library and popped this in, the first two CD's brought me to tears. I can picture myself praying in a gothic cathedral while listening to this. Oh that "church music" of today could even try to emulate the beauty.
full of discoveries.......2000-06-24
First, let me make it clear that I didn't buy the whole set. The price and the volume is a bit intimidating, to say the least, and the sheer ubiquity of Harnoncourt recordings these days tends to breed a certain resistance in me. Therefore this review is based on the three discs I own (8, 9 and 10) - I'm withholding a star based on ignorance, not criticism. That said, I found the recordings delightful and more than once a pleasant surprise. The Masses can sound somewhat repetitive at times, but for me the real discovery was the many small and fragmentary pieces, which one doesn't come across often in other recordings. The Kyrie K.89 is a haunting vocal canon, so unlike a Mozart; the Miserere K.85, dark, powerful, with just a hint of Allegri; Kyrie K.322 and 323 little gems. The singing is clear and forceful. Contrary to the Amazon review above, I didn't find the baroque instrumentation to be a problem. I don't know if it's a good idea to buy the complete set (Amazon doesn't offer them individually, I think), but it's certainly a lot of CDs for the money -.- , and one thing I can say for sure is that there are bound to be similar discoveries for everyone.

An Amazing Work of Art by Steve Suvada.......2004-07-21
This cd is a wonderful work of art that uses the natural sounding classical guitar to portay many beautiful landscapes. From quiet meadows to a holiday celebration, Steve Suvada depicts a wide range of Richard Pick's most beautiful songs. As a student of Steve Suvada, I can tell you that this cd is a small taste of his incredible talent as a very creative and devoted guitarist. You will surely be amazed by his ability to carry on the wonderful music of Richard Pick.
Finest American Composer for Classical Guitar.......2004-06-27
Richard Pick's music is some of the finest I've ever heard written for the classical guitar. He is truly one of the most underrated voices of his generation, and is wonderfully American and Naturalist in his themes. I hope people will listen to this wonderful performance by Mr. Suvada and thank him for perpetuating the music of this inspiring American composer...Richard Pick. It is obvious to the listener that he worked closely with Richard Pick in the production of this recording, so as to come up with the definitive interpretation of Pick's work. The two men made a marvelous team in the production of this beautiful record. Thank you for this gem of American Classical guitar music!!!!
The Quiet Cove,.......2003-12-17
Steve Suvada is the perfect player for this music. Richard Pick's music touches the soul, and can make you forget about any problems of the world that may be in your way. If you are looking for some beautiful music to chill out and relax with, this is a great Cd. If you are a guitarist and not familiar with Pick's music, then you should look into it.

A Celebration of Quality Choral Hymns.......2000-10-26
In a world of pop Christian music, its wonderful to find quality choral recordings of current and classic hymns of faith such as this. The traditional Christiansen-sterile sound has been broken in the new St. Olaf generation without any sacrifice of quality. The ethnic and historic variety add real celebration and a choral treat! John Ferguson and company know hymns, know quality arrangements, and of course, quality performance.

It's better than POCO........2006-05-31
As good as POCO has been, "In My Father's House" surpasses the work Richie Furay did with POCO because the music, arrangements and vocals are much more complex while remaining loyal to the sound Richie and POCO made famous. In addition, the depth and value of the lyrics makes listening to this work, an experience that goes beyond the mere joy of POCO's earlier work. This album will change how you felt before you listen to it and if you accept what Richie is singing about, it will change your perspective on a lot things. I don't recall POCO music doing that for me.
Songs of Praise, Devotion, and Reverence.......2003-04-18
I have read the reviews of others, and I too have followed Richie through his career. To expound on his song wrting and singing is to repeat what everyone already knows. What should be understood is that Richie has found a place of comfort, quite distant from where many perceive. Richie is not making music to bring attention to himself as he did before; Richie is making music to bring attention to God, with all the harmony, balance, and sincerity we have come to appreciate.
Richie is showing us, through his music, the warmth one experiences when they have a sincere relationship with God. He demonstrates his trust and confidence in his Lord, while sharing his personal delight and satisfaction that comes through such a relationship; As the lord provides for him, he gives glory and thanks in return.
Through his gift of music, Richie is serving his Lord by giving praise to him, and communicating to others the depth of sincere and genuine reverence one can express when their hearts are in accord with the Lord.
One should not hear the music without listening to the message; it is only for the message that this music was written..
Let all who listen to this album appreciate the warmth of his love for God, and how he wishes all of us to experience it in the same manner. Songs of praise and worship are written for this reason.
STILL POCO MUSIC.......2000-11-07
What a great CD. Even though it has a religious theme, the music and his voice are pure Poco. So even if religious songs are not your thing, you'll still enjoy this CD, and while you'll listening check out the lyrics. They may just touch you like you've never been touched before. Thanks Richie for all the great music over the years.
That's Our Richie!.......2000-09-04
It is hard to express in words what this CD means to me. It touches my heart in so many places. I graduated from high school in 1967. Music from 1966-1974 is an integral part of my mental and emotional make-up. Richie Furay, along with Neil Young, James Taylor, and Jackson Browne were my favorites in these turbulent and formative years. In 1977, The Lord Jesus saved me out of drug addiction, and kept my marriage to a genuine "Kind Woman" from falling apart. Praise Him, we are about to celebrate 26 years.
I have a son Sam who is 22 and with whom I am very close. Our taste in music is remarkably similar. I told him that in a magazine article, and on the web site for Richie's church, it was mentioned that so many people who Richie played with in the 60s and 70s became famous and big stars, while Richie really did not. Sam responded by saying that was "Not the case in this house".
Anyway, listening to the CD in my truck with Sam, everything came together for me. The Richie Furay voice and musical style brought me all the way back to "Nowadays Clancy Can't Even Sing". But the absolute non-comprimising Gospel lyrics in every song (you don't become a pastor of a Calvary Chapel by being a slouch) touched me where I live. All of a sudden I started yelling "That's our Richie Sam! That's our Richie!
I love the entire work, but tracks 4 & 5 "Wake Up My Soul", and "We have come to Worship You" are incredible. I don't know if artists read these reviews, but if they do, I want to say, "Brother Richie, you are something special".

While Richie Furay's Christian faith dominates this recording, it also demonstrates what made him the defining voice of Poco and a key element to his earlier work with Buffalo Springfield.
The years have only served to add depth and character to his vocals, and Furay still has a knack for writing catchy melodies.
"Wake Up My Soul" (my favorite track) would have fit perfectly on any Poco album with its banjo and steel guitar accompaniment--the latter provided by Poco alumnus Rusty Young.
Additional musicians on the album include New Grass Revival founder Sam Bush, fiddle and mandolin; Scott Sellen, banjo (and co-writer of all tracks with Richie, except "Send Me Lord" and "The Love I Now Posess," which he wrote himself); and Pete Wasner, piano and Hammond B-3 organ (the latter providing a "churchy" sound to the gospel-inspired "Give Thanks to the Lord," one of the album's standout tracks.)
Other stellar tracks are "Hallel," "In My Father's House," "Man of Many Sorrows," and "Send Me Lord." Overall, this is an excellent album. If you'd been anxiously waiting to hear Richie again since the Poco reunion in 1989, this album is Good News--both for Poco fans and Christian music fans alike. Recommended
