    5 out of 5 stars Replacement.......2002-04-03

Years ago while I was overseas in the army I bought this tape and have enjoyed it very much. The tape has become old and worn and since I now have a computer the that plays CDs, personal CD player, CD player in my truck, and etc. I bought it on CD so I can continue to enjoy it for years to come. Don't be fooled this CD can be enjoyed by any and everybody of all ages. I am 35 yrs. old but I also own CDs by Britney Spears, NSYNC, CCR, Backstreet Boys, the Eagles, B.B. King, Christina Aguilera, and many others and I enjoy all of them. If you enjoy the samples you well enjoy the whole album.

5 out of 5 stars What became of Ellie May? Did she enter a convent?.......2001-01-25

Columbia has released a series of CDs paying tribute to the Country Classics, volume 3 of which is entitled AMERICANA and contains twenty-five so called "saga songs", i.e. numbers which put to music stories of good vs. adversity.

This disk features a veritable posse of legendary artists. Johnny Cash is the most represented ("Don't Take Your Guns to Town", "Tennessee Flat Top Box", "A Boy Named Sue", "Highwayman" - the last with Waylon Jennings, Willie Nelson and Kris Kristofferson). Others with more than one track are Marty Robbins ("Big Iron", "El Paso"), Hawkshaw Hawkins ("Twenty Miles from Shore", "Soldier's Joy"), and Stonewall Jackson ("Life to Go", "Waterloo").

    Then, there are my favorites:

"The Ballad of Davy Crockett" (Fess Parker) makes me yearn for the coonskin cap I had as a kid. It'd look mighty fine at the big management meeting. (Actually, I think it was rabbit fur.) I'd probably run afoul of PETA, though. And who needs that hassle?

"Big Bad John" (Jimmy Dean) reminds me of the hero I once aspired to be. Unfortunately, real, everyday life is pretty much mundane. Besides, there are no mines locally, and sewer work doesn't have quite the same cachet.

Even though I love just about everything British (except Lemon Shandy), "The Battle of New Orleans" (Johnny Horton) is a real toe-tapper. Makes me want to dump tea into Los Angeles harbor. In your eye, Tony!

The next time I have to pay my IRS taxes, perhaps playing for them "May the Bird of Paradise Fly Up Your Nose" ("Little" Jimmy Dickens) would get a more warm `n' fuzzy response. Hmm ... maybe not.

Lastly, "The Ballad of Jed Clampett" (Lester Flatt, Earl Scruggs and the Foggy Mountain Boys) brings to mind Ellie May sunbathing out by the CEEment Pond. Let's dwell on that vision for a long moment. Dang, Uncle Jed! (If you haven't a clue as to what I'm blathering on about here, then forget it, as you're too young to appreciate this CD anyway.)

My only regret concerning this collection of down-home favorites is that the catchy theme from "Green Acres" isn't included. Pity. I was hoping to sing along.

5 out of 5 stars The Absolute best!.......2000-10-25

A must have for all true country music fans. It has the ballads and songs of the best bygone era in country music. Buy this and enjoy!

5 out of 5 stars Oh, the memories!.......2000-06-29

I stumbled over this CD while looking for something with "Long Black Veil" on it. What a gold mine I found with all these mostly country oldies plus a few newer ones! About all that is missing is "Summer Wine" and "Miller's Cave." Even to my tin ears, the sound is great; and I certainly enjoy listening to the original recordings rather than someone else's.

This CD is worth it's weight in gold. The mix is outstanding. One of the few CD's that you'll enjoy playing straight through time and time again. The songs take us back to a more simple time. Some of the best songs ever written are here. Simple, infectious melodies that will never go out of style. This CD is worth twice it's price. Buy it, you won't be sorry.

HAGGARD AT HIS BEST. ITS SO EASY TO LISTEN AND HEAR WHAT MELRE CAN DO WITH HIS VOICE. WONDERFUL MUSIC. A MUST HAVE AND A KEEPER

5 out of 5 stars Interesting songs not all available elsewhere.......2004-04-21

Curb released this collection partly to supplement other collections of Merle's hits then available on CD (Capitol Collectors series, More of the best, Best of the early years - all of which I've reviewed though two are long out of print). At the time this was released, three of his Capitol number one country hits (Kentucky gambler, Grandma Harp, Carolyn) were (to my knowledge) unavailable on CD. Two of them are included here, together with many great songs - a mix of B-sides and album tracks.

Dolly Parton wrote Kentucky gambler, which Merle took to the top of the country charts in 1974. Dolly's own version appeared on her album, Bargain store. Grandma Harp is based on a true story about a grand old lady. Running kind (about restlessness) is one of two other country hits on this collection - it made number twelve in 1977. The remaining country hit, A working man can't get nowhere today, made the top twenty in 1977.

Other songs that may be familiar to those with only a limited knowledge of Merle's music include two covers of country classics (Green green grass of home, Making believe) and Silver wings, one of his most popular B-sides. In the nineties, Merle re-recorded Silver wings as a duet with Jewel.

Of the others, I particularly like What have you got planned Diana (originally released as the B-side to Cherokee maiden), Here in Frisco and Where does the good times go - but there are a lot of great songs here, many still not available elsewhere on CD.

This collection may not appeal to casual fans just looking for hits but has much to offer committed fans of Merle's music.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best from Merle Haggard........1999-10-07

The album is typical from Merle. It has some great songs in it and some great classics. I am very pleased with this album. If you are a Haggard fan, then by all means, buy this album. You want be un- happy with it.

5 out of 5 stars columbia classics Vol 1.......2005-04-08

I was born in 1931 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvina. That was way before TV. I remember all these artists and the songs. When they were appearing in Pittsburgh or Wheeling West Virginia (The WWVA Jamboree) I would be right there in the front row. I loved the music when it was Hillbilly, then country western and than The Nashville Sound.

I am so thrilled you recorded all the greats on one CD. I love it and am so happy to be able to purchase it. PS -- I had all the 78rpm records, but over time they got lost. Thank you for putting them all on one CD.

5 out of 5 stars A perfect Appalachian honeymoon soundtrack.......1999-01-25

We bought this - on cassette - in Washington DC on our first day of honeymoon in September 1997. Having flown from Northern Ireland, it provided us with the perfect honeymoon soundtrack as we drove from Washington to Nashville, along the Skyline drive, down through South West Virginia, across Eastern Kentucky to Berea, and down to Smoky Mountains National Park in Tennessee. We are from an Ulster-Scots/Scotch-Irish background, and during those three weeks we fell in love with the land that our forebears had settled in so many centuries before, bringing thier fiddles and folk songs with them, creating what was the core of mountain old-time music and bluegrass. From the Carter Family right through, every song is a classic. You must buy this!

    5 out of 5 stars Truckin' Heaven.......2006-03-22

I've had this CD for a little over a month and I can't seem to get it out of my truck's CD player. This is definitely one of those CD's that makes you want to drive a semi!!! This is my first Dave Dudley CD, but it certainly won't be my last. The instrumentation is not overkill, but when it's there, it just feels right. The highlights on this CD for me are Two Six Packs Away and Me and Ole CB. If you like Dale Watson and Junior Brown type stuff, you'll see where they got it from.

5 out of 5 stars DAVE DUDLEY, ICEBREAKER.......2000-12-16

Several years ago, my good buddy's sister got married to the son of a genteel Southern family from Atlanta, or maybe S.Carolina , or somewhere well south of Cement City (n.y,). After the wedding and reception, everyone returned to the bride's family home for what would be the first meeting of the families close-up. There was some tension here, since in addition to being new in-laws, the groom's parents were "Southeners" and my buddy's family were Long Islanders (pronounced Lawn Guyland, since most of us here were born in Brooklyn). Being musically inclined, my buddy and his brothers and a couple of other guys broke out the guitars and the harmonica, and the very first song they played was "Six Days on the Road" It surprised the guests for a few seconds, but then everyone was either singing or keeping time by slapping their knees. The rest of the party went great, and the newlyweds lived happily ever after,I think, partially due to Dave Dudley. And I'm ordering me a mess of Dave's tapes right quick, ya hear!

5 out of 5 stars six days on the road turned out to last for almost 30 years.......2000-11-01

In the very early seventies a friend and I drove in an old Land Rover overland from Austria to Sri Lanka (way down southeast of anywhere).I had somehow gotten hold of a couple of Mcs by Dave Dudley. Up to then I had never heard of him. But gee, every town we left we played the six days on the road and another song called "one more mile" Boy, we spent more than six days on those roads and made more than one detour. From then on Dave Dudley has been a constant companion on the sometimes bumpy road of my life. I just wish, the guy would sing forever ! By the way, the other day I had an E-mail written by Dave and I can tell you, I have never been so thrilled in all my life, which has up to now lasted for almost 60 years.

5 out of 5 stars Seattle Loves Dave & his purported sister "Miss Dudley".......2000-03-29

Learned about "The Master" on Pat Cashman's morning KOMO-AM 1000 show where Dave is a lesser God. Never fails to raise the roof when Pat cranks up "Two six packs away"! Mr. Dudley is not defintiely NOT PC which makes things all the better...

A woman with a charming southern accent who purports to be the adoring sister of Mr. Dudley lives in Seattle and occasionally calls in to the Pat Cashman show to extoll the virtues of her purported brother Dave Dudley. "Miss Dudley", as she calls herself, is a much loved, hilarious Seattle character who has added another level of relish to Dave Dudley's music.

    5 out of 5 stars Excellent!.......1999-10-05

As a young boy I used to listen to Dave dudly & six days on the road,as my Dad was a trucker & died in a truck wreck in 53 when I was just 3 yrs old.He used to play guitar & even played the ole Grand Ole oprey to which im very proud.Myself I have been in & out of trucks & allways listen to Dave & his great songs, even now that im involved in Motor Carrier Safety,I still listen to him a lot.Great Singer he is.

3 out of 5 stars Country Hits and Misses.......2007-05-30

I ordered this CD for the Floyd Tillman tracks, which are almost impossible to find elsewhere. The rest of the mix is spotty at best, with some tracks bordering on mere filler.

    5 out of 5 stars HOT!!.......2003-01-09

As fine a compilation of serious pre-nashville glitz honky tonk as you'll find. REally a great disc.

4 out of 5 stars Classic soundtrack to an idealized 50s honky-tonk.......2000-04-04

I've had this disc for a few weeks now, and I finally figured out what it sounds like: a jukebox at some idealized 50's honky tonk. Columbia has gone back to the vaults to pull out a wealth of country honky tonk material, *27* tracks, clocking in at an incredible *73+* minutes! The recordings range from the mid 40's through the early 60's. The sound is really quite impressive throughout.

Artists include Bob Wills & His Texas Playboys on a mid-40's blues, Floyd Tillman, "Little" Jimmy Dickens, Lefty Frizell, Marty Robbins, Carl Smith, Johnny Horton (forever wiping out the sound of "North to Alaska" and "The Battle of New Orleans" by ripping it up in an almost rockabilly style on "Honky Tonk Man"), Ray Price (with great versions of "Heartaches by the Numbers", and "Crazy Arms"), and more.

Lots of fiddle and peddle steel round out the package. A great buy.

4 out of 5 stars Half is ok, half is fantastic.......1999-10-01

The first half is weak, but the second half (starting with "Hey Joe") makes up for it. It's a chronological presentation. A good sampler. Every song from then on is FANTASTIC!

4 out of 5 stars Start here without hesitation........1999-04-17

These artists had all the technology they needed. Just listen to this stuff! Ones who can deliver a honky tonk song like this are not in such desperate need of digital assistance! A good intro to real country songs by real country singers and musicians.

5 out of 5 stars gospel from the possum.......2003-01-01

This CD came out originally in 1990 with ten tracks (the last three are new additions) and all of them were recorded in 1979 for an aborted gospel album that had been in the works. One track on here, "We Oughta Be Ashamed", was actually the B-side to his 1979 single "Someday My Day Will Come". I like "Would They Love Him Down in Shreveport?" and "Me and Jesus" as well as "A Picture From Life's Other Side", "Mama's Family Bible" and "The Devil Is Gathering Firewood" but i could've done without "Jesus Saves Today". All in all a great gospel album.
