      5 out of 5 stars Truly Dazzling!.......2000-03-22

"A silly girl/I am you know/To hang myself/For the Butcher's Boy" Stark, unflinching early American folk recordings from 1925-26. The sound quality is great considering the age of the recordings.

5 out of 5 stars Superb vintage Bluegrass!.......2001-05-21

"Roots rock" enthusiasts, NPR listeners, and other musical poseurs, beware: This is art, not product. No one will think you're clever to listen to The Hill Billies/Al Hopkins and his Buckle Busters, and no one will believe you when you tell them you have a CD containing 1925-1926 Bluegrass, because we all know that Bill Monroe invented Bluegrass a decade later. (And he would know--after all, he invented it.) The Stray Hepsters and "Celtic Coffee Break, volume 85" await you. Begone!

For the rest of us, this CD offers superb vintage Country music performed by superb musicians--no Amateur Night at Sun Studios here. The music bounces along in the manner of modern Bluegrass, and the tunes are in the finest Cecil Sharp tradition. I would single out "Silly Bill" and "Round Town Girls" ("Buffalo Gals" to us square-shooters) as the multiple-play champions, but every track is a joy. The lyrics are gloriously un-P.C. and the sound gloriously vintage. If you want modern sound, I'm sure there are some "roots" Country outfits out there. If you want the real thing, however, you'll have to cope with 1925-1926 sound, and not even the best in that category. But it's the music that matters. Gee, where have I heard that before?

Keep the Document label going. Buy this! (Two more volumes are out there, but don't tell Amazon I told you.)
