Customer Reviews:
Southern gospel bluegrass at its very best.......2003-10-06
Reno & Smiley were true pioneers that defined bluegrass in the 1950s, and the most impressive songs they recorded were their gospel songs, sixteen of which are assembled here on this album. You won't hear Don Reno plucking the strings as furiously as you might in the group's more standard bluegrass fare, but you'll still have plenty of reason to understand you are listening to a master banjo player at work. Red Smiley and company provide plenty of traditional guitar and fiddle work to make these songs true representatives of Southern bluegrass gospel. Smiley takes the lead on most songs, with Reno providing his unsurpassed high tenor vocal accompaniment to many a chorus. If you don't like bluegrass, you might think that Smiley often sounds like a cat howling at midnight, but fans of the genre cannot but appreciate his distinctive singing voice.
The best thing about these sixteen songs, in my opinion, is the fact that they are not well-known, although a few may well be somewhat familiar to the listener. This isn't like sitting down and hearing Reno & Smiley perform the great songs you've grown up listening to in church and on the radio; this is a fresh and exciting album, or at least it is to these ears. Many of these tracks are upbeat, fast-paced, toe-tapping classics: e.g., He Will Set Your Fields On Fire, There's a Highway to Heaven, Tree of Life, New Jerusalem, Echoes From the Burning Bush. Several are more middle-of-the-road in pace and execution, with the best examples being the not unfamiliar I'm Using My Bible For a Roadmap and the follow-up Since I've Used My Bible For a Roadmap. Then there are a few slow tearjerker songs, and these are by far the most powerful and impressive songs on the album. My Mother's Bible and How I Miss My Darling Mother are profoundly sentimental offerings, but even they pale in comparison to the emotional Someone Will Love Me in Heaven, which opens with a child's parents being laid to rest and imparts the greatest of blessings through its words and music.
If you haven't heard Reno & Smiley, you haven't heard bluegrass in its purest form, and you really have not heard Southern gospel bluegrass at its very best. For my money, Reno & Smiley are the best bluegrass performers to ever live and bless us with their recordings, and it is a great shame that their names are not as familiar as those of the great Bill Monroe, Lester Flatt, and Earl Scruggs.
Wow... this is good!.......2003-02-13
An outstanding bluegrass gospel album, which dips lightly into southern gospel terrain as well. Their gospel recordings on King/Gusto have always had a way of staying in print, or at least popping up with great regularity over the years. Which is just fine, since this is some of the best bluegrass gospel you're ever likely to hear. A very smooth, professional presentation, but also still soulful and heartfelt... These guys really knew their stuff. But, hey, don't just take my word for it: check it out for yourself! Even if you don't necessarily go for all the Jesus stuff, this is some mighty good mountain music!

Customer Reviews:
The Stanleys Are Truely The Best.......2005-06-23
If you like "Real" Traditional Bluegrass, this is a perfect album for you. Ralph & Carter Stanley began their professional career in 1947. They recorded for Rich-R-Tone, Columbia, and Mercury records. In the late 50's they began recording for King records. This is their finest gospel King recordings from 1958-1966 (Carter Stanley's death was in 1966.) The Stanley Brothers are not your everyday progressive grass, but real, traditional, mountain Bluegrasss. If you like the traditional style, you will greatly enjoy this album.
ALEX, 16.
The One That Started the Quest for More Bluegrass.......2002-05-06
My Bluegrass addiction has become out-of-control and it started with this one. The beautiful harmony of the Stanley Brothers is what defined "High Lonesome" for me, beginning with the song "Rank Strangers." Every song on this CD will stay in your mind at one time or another the more you listen to it.
No FLUFF, just pure, "from the heart" Gospel Bluegrass.......2002-01-22
I was introduced to the Stanley brothers by hearing their song "Angel Band" on the O Bother Where Art thou? soundtrack. After doing just a little research, I quickly realized they were the real deal. Ralph and Carter Stanley have a collection here of true and pure, soulful memories that must savored time and time again. This music stirs memories of my parents and grandparents, camp meetings, week long revivals and of a simpler time.
I realize this collection will be too un-sophisticated for many who listen. But not me. I'll be buying more from these guys.
memories of warm and happy days.......2001-08-25
This is probably one of the best purcheses I've ever made. This CD has brought me back in memory of my days in the Blue Ridge Mountain's of Virginia where I was born but left at an early age. I remember waking up in the mornings with all theses songs playing on the radio and growing up listening to all the Stanley Brothers songs, we lived in Grundy, Va, only about 20 miles from where the Stanley's were born, and went to all of their festivals at their old homestead. So you can see why these songs mean so much to me. The Stanley Brothers 16 Greatest Gospel Hits are songs that we sang in church and are songs that bring family and loved ones closer together, like sitting out on the porch at night with Mom & Dad singing all of their old hymns from this CD. I've since bought 5 other CD of theirs and have enjoyed the music and memories emencely. I recomend this CD highly, its a must to anyone that enjoys Bluegrass music....
Genuine bluegrass gospel music from one of the all time best.......1999-08-21
The stanley brothers singing gospel music - is there anything better or more heart felt? Carter and Ralph's vocals blending together is truely some of the finest bluegrass music. The stanley brothers are definitely true pioneers. This one should be in everyone's collection.
