This is some of the most interesting music I've heard. Something is developing in Jazz piano that I intend to follow. With Mr. Gilchrist, Matthew Shipp, Jason Moran, Brad Mehldau, D.D. Jackson and some others, there's a recent conceptual shift of a sort that I have not personally heard since Don Pullen or Keith Jarrett's first albums. I only wish that on this one and the previous "Music According to Lafayette Gilchrist", that the piano wasn't buried under the horns. I want to hear a Lafayette Gilchrist album with a small group or solo.

    Another Shining Path brings together the working trio of Gary Hassay, alto saxophone, William Parker, bass, and Toshi Makihara, drums. Each member of this trio has been a voice for improvisational music over the past two decades in cities and towns throughout the world where none existed. The trio has collaborated on a number of live performances, but this CD marks their first recording.

    Hassay's trio (A.K.A. Ye Ren) shows much promise in this early release. They have a unique sound, and a tight focus that is rare for newer groups.

    The music here is very freely structured, stream-of-consciousness "composition." The result is highly dependent on the quality of the musicians. On this disk, musicianship is quite high.

    It is always nicer to be able to listen to William Parker's fine bass work in settings in which larger amounts of his ideas make it onto the tape. On the present disc, however, Parker is right up there in the mix, where he needs to be.

    Hassay has a deep, breathy alto tone, reminiscent of many post-Hawkins tenorists' approaches in "normal" jazz. He uses mainly the lower register in developing his lines, and keeps them uncluttered.

    Makihara has a sculptural approach: he stacks layers of timbres and registers together at once, but his attack leaves plenty of sonic space.

    Overall, quite a nice disk. Not all the pieces greatly appealed to me, but others may very well like the ones I did not. There is a variety of approaches found here.

    While this album doesn't really have any ties to mainstream jazz at all, it also doesn't have any reason to make you enjoy listening to it either.

    Gary Hassay just plays through each song, never quite settling in on a melody, he does avoid the high-register squawks that you can sometimes associate with this genre. William Parker does his usuall superb job as a bassist, but there's nothing here about his playing that you can really hang your hat on.

    The medium-slow tempo of each song just makes the whole record feel drug out, and boring. I'm not quite sure why I've listened to it three or four times now. Now it's headed for the trash.

      Danny Ilchuck and Chip Love have long been associated with numerous NYC hiphop/rock projects over the past decade and a half, including the Bad Brains as road crew and close friends; it's about time they've put something down we can hear. These guys are Lower East Side veterans with deep understanding of all genres you hear on the CD; the only problem is that it didn't come out sooner.

      I picked up this cd from one of the band members at a recent KoRn concert. I gave it chance and am happy that I bought it. It ( from what I heard and what was personally descibed to me ) is about the effects on war. It is a very good concept album.

      p funk has always been about doing the unexpected and mudbone proves that on this release if you're expecxting some bootsy rubber band stuff try elsewhere it's cool to see mudbone try other musical stryles and you have to be open minded to truly get into this.
