5 out of 5 stars Nicely produced, nicely recorded, classic gold.......2004-01-14

This is one of the best Flatt and Scruggs records and periods I have heard. Of course anyone with ears needs all of the original Mercury sides, and, if you are really into it, the recordings they made working for Bill Monroe. But this stuff is really pure gold. The recording is much better than the Mercury sides. You hear a lot more bass and a lot sharper treble than on the Mercury sides. The picking is cleaner and the rhythm supports the band more tightly than with the earlier recordings, even it means the sounds is not as rocking or swinging as before.

The selections are a very good mix of real country songs without too many of the corny sentimental tunes on the Mercury sides or the overflow of traditional and folk tunes that flooded into the band's repertoire after they began orienting to the folk revival of the 1960s.

This is a good record to appreciate the clean and fine singing of Lester Flatt as well as his backup guitar playing. Likewise, we're lucky to have Jimmy Brown the newsboy, one of my favorite things, a Earl Scruggs guitar solo doing things Carter Family Style.

This is classy stuff. It requires a fine whisky or good wine, and no clutter, just good times, and good listening. This is the kind of CD to listen to when you forget just how wonderful and golden music and life can be.

5 out of 5 stars Single Best Bluegrass Collection of All Time.......1998-09-01

Sounds like hyperbole, I know, but this platter lives up to it. Even 40-year-old recording techniques can't diminish the tightness and drive exhibited by this greatest of all bands. You won't believe the groove these old guys create! And the songs are from F&S's true "Golden Era"...after they'd transcended their Bill Monroe beginnings but before the Jed Clampett/weird echo sell-outs of the 60s. All the songs and performances are great, but the LP hits a perfect stride that starts with I'M WORKING ON A ROAD and that continues through TIL THE END OF THE WORLD ROLLS AROUND, JIMMY BROWN THE NEWSBOY [song list shown above is incorrect], EARL'S BREAKDOWN, and SOMEONE TOOK MY PLACE WITH YOU. These performances are sublime -- bluegrass music (or any music) doesn't get any better. After you hear it, you'll have to have more and you won't be able to stop yourself from buying the 1948-1959 box set.
